• How can I restore a country specific apt-get update mirror?

  While configuring my new 13.10 installation, I chose to change the default update server using the "Software & Updates" GUI tool available in the System settings panel. Before this change the selected update server was "Server for Italy" (I live there). Now it's one of the mirrors available in the list of mirrors (one of italian ones). How is "Server for COUNTRY" chosen in the list of mirrors for a country? How can I restore the "Server for Italy" option? Is it advisable to do so? I want to revert that setting because I found that the selected mirror is not up to date (checked from Here).

  Following a recent discussion with female associates in hiring positions for software development/engineering positions, I found out that this kind of information would be incredibly useful to helping make sure that the workforce shows a gender balance. So I went looking. I've found various literature speaking about risk-taking behaviour and patterns, and other statistical differences between men and women when it comes to work performance. See for example this article related to hedge fund management. I have yet to see any such comparison in the computing field. To restate the question: Which specific programming activities do women, on average, perform better than men? Please back up your answers with specific details, preferably by linking to relevant research or, failing that, explaining what you're basing the information on.

• How to set the default Microphone

  I am using an external Web-cam with a build-in Microphone. When I am using Skype or some other Software it doesn’t recognise the Microphone automatically. So I always have to activate it myself in the Audio Settings. How can I avoid this and set it as default Web-cam. This PC doesn't have another Webcam or Mic. And the Web-cam is always pluged in.   Quick shoutout for the Fusion Applications (Cloud Applications to you) Developer Relations blog post about translating Fusion apps customizations using composers and other tools and utilities provided by Oracle. Great to see Fusion help customizations included in the post, as well as software, and it also includes a nice heads up on what's coming to enable customers to make changes to text themselves in Release 8 of Oracle's Cloud Applications. I am proud to say that I logged the enhancements for what's coming in Release 8  to come to life and also wrote a spec for its requirements based on the customer research done internationally through the Oracle Usability Advisory Board). • SUN Java and GPL V2 licence issue for linked applications

  I have recently noticed that the Sun Java code has been released as GPL V2 code (see Google code repo). Does that mean that all applications written in Java and linked to Sun APIs (beans, and so on) are also in GPL ? If we strictly follow the GPL then this should be the case (Libs should be in LGPL, not GPL if we want to build proprietary software on top of it). Is there another commercial licence which can avoid such an issue ? I cannot believe this is the case. There must be an explanation on this. Regards, Apple92

• Xubuntu all Icons disappeared

  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04.1 with kernel Xen4.1-amd64 and the following problem is mine: Nearly all icons have been replaced by the default "no icon available"-icon, even on the login screen and the all icons in software like e.g. Firefox and the icons I manually assigned to launchers, too. Changing the icon theme does not seem to affect this. The only icons that did not disappear are: LibreOffice, gThumb, Simplescan, Ristretto and in the XFCE menu office, tools and graphics. How could I bring the icons back? EDIT: When I tried to use Ristretto the following error showed up: Could not load image-loader module /usr/lib/x68_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.12.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so Unable to open shared-object-file I/O error (Had to translate this to English.)

  I am a software developer having an experience of 3 yrs. I want to play with latest technologies always. But this is not practical. Because say, I developed a web application in .Net 3.5, now its 30% done. After the release of .Net 4.0, my mind is always goes with .Net 4.0. I think like this, lot of features are in new version, so why shouln't I implement those versions in my application. When I worked with IT companies, most of them code with very old versions, some body use VB.NET, C, even Classic ASP. So what might be the points should I consider if I revamp an application?

  We are a group of students who are working on a theory in software engineering (talking about the theory takes a lot of time so I just skip that). Implementing the theory is impossible, due to technical limitations, but it can be proven on a paper logically. We've been pushed to do a testing on it, so it can be proved that way too (although we bleieve that's not possible!), now: Basically, is it possible to test something like this? • Is Adobe Flash 11.2 working with Nvidia hardware again in 12.04?

  I installed the newest Nvidia-Linux drivers version number 304.43 on 12.04 installation and all Flash Videos now show me "accelerated video rendering". Previous Nvidia drivers + Adobe Flash only rendered in software, at least since Adobe officially said they turned off "hardware acceleration" for Linux, because of unstable and unsecure drivers. Has this changed? Is hardware acceleration really back? Can anyone verify this as well? The Nvidia driver 304.43 patch notes said: Fixed a bug that caused VDPAU to hang when expanding the YouTube Flash Player. Hardware: Nvidia 8600M GT

• How do you deal with the details when reading code?

  After reading some projects, I find that it is not the architecture of the software that is really hard to know. It is not hard to figure out the architecture immediately if the project is clearly designed and implemented, if it's hard and never seen before, some day later I can find out some pattern similar to the one I read in the same domain. The difficulty is that the concepts and mechanism defined by the author are really hard to guess, and these concepts may spread in the whole project which makes it hard to grasp. The situation is normal and universal and you can ask questions to your colleague when in a company. However, it gets worse if nobody around you knows these details. How do you handle these details which block your reading?

• Noisy audio recording in Ubuntu Linux

  I'm unable to record audio without noise on my Ubuntu laptop . It is not a grounding problem . My windows os is able to record voice without the static noise so, my hardware is fine . I read in the Windows forums that the os has software noise filtering mechanism that's automatically enabled. How do I do the same in Ubuntu? If not, please let me know how to filter the static noise. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

• File system layout for multiple build targets

  I am seeking some ideas for how to build and install software with some parameters. These including target OS, target platform CPU details, debugging variant, etc. Some parts of the install are shared, such as documentation and many platform independent files, others are not, such as 64 and 32 bit libraries when these are separated and not together in a multi-arch library. On big networked platforms one often has multiple computers sharing some large server space, so there is actually cause to have even Windows and Unix binaries on the same disk. My product has already fixed an install philosophy of $INSTALL_ROOT/genericname/version/ so that multiple versions can coexist. The question is: how to manage the layout of all the other stuff?

• RTOS experience

  I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction.

  My friend is a project manager for a software company. The most frustrating thing for him is that his engineers frequently leave their jobs. The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). My friend hates that theory. Any advice for him?

• Converting MOD files to quicktime or mpeg for adobe premiere pro

  Ive been Editing lots of videos lately. My company got a video camera: Canon Legria FS200. It saves the movies in a digital format as MOD files. Unfortunately, Adobe Premiere doesnt work with these files. I needed software to convert MOD files to QuickTime or mpeg files. I found a good free one : Its called Mpeg StreamClip:  It works well. and its pretty fast. And its Free. • How can you plan long range resources and budgets when using Agile methodology?

  Agile does not encourage a lot of up-front design. This is good from a requirements management and software development standpoint, and allows the project to adapt to changing business needs. However, how does one do any long range planning of resources if you don't really know what you're going to build when you start? Oh sure, you have a conceptual model of what you're going to build, but you don't have any measurable detail from which to gague how many resources you will need to complete the project, or how much it will cost. • Should I concentrate on writing code for money or my studies while in college?

  I am college student of Software Engineering. My worries are that while I am concentrating on my studies, my peers are getting down with the code (e.g. HTML, ASP, PHP, etc) to earn money. Should I be worried that I am not doing coding like them? I was asked to be Microsoft Student Partner but I refused because the person what was doing before me told it was just arranging events. Nothing as such like getting with Microsoft and coding. Should I be writing code and earning money as I still am in 4th semester? I only have C++ as learning language in college. Will my job count on these projects that I do, or should I concentrate on studies for now to get maximum benefit?

• What source control to use for my private gaming server?h

  It has sql server components, client launcher, server software. I want to use an online resource where people can make updates, and make it easier to roll out any changes to players. Most of the files are just text files, or gtx image files. I don't think this qualifies as open source, so I don't know what to do. I tried github, and have a free account there, but it was really clunky, mass adding every file to be comitted. I really dont' like subversion but if that's the best option, i'll use it. The other people who will need access to the files will have no familiarity with any kind of source control, so I need an easy system for them to download files, make changes, and comit to the repository. Any suggestions?

  In the past, the Numerical Recipes book was considered the gold standard reference for numerical algorithms. The earliest Fortran Edition was followed by editions in C and C++ and others, bringing it then more up-to-date. Through these, it provided reference code for the state-of-the-art algorithms of the day. Older editions are available online for free nowadays. Unfortunately, I think it is now mostly useful only as a historic tome. The "software engineering" practises seem to me to be outdated, and the actual content hasn't kept pace with the literature. What comprehensive yet approachable references should the modern programmer look at instead?

• How can I make my game more popular without paying money?

  I am a game designer, software developer, composer and graphic artist and made the 3D Hack 'n Slay MMO Forgotten Elements on my own. It's playable at open Beta and will be released at the end of the year. I used Plain Old JAVA, JPCT 3D Engine, Tomcat Webserver and Blender 3D / Gimp to manage all the tasks. I developed the whole game from scratch. For me the hardest task in this challenge is probably the whole thing about marketing and advertisement. Because it is a independent project and I am the only person working on it, there is no money I could invest for making advertisement. But anyhow... How could it be possible to make this game more popular? What would you suggest me?
