  • How to block internet access for wine applications?

    Hello! Is it possible to prevent specific wine applications or any wine application from accessing the internet? When using certain apps under Windows, they were trying to access the internet from time to time without any obvious reason. I was able to prevent that behaviour with a personal firewall back then. Unfortunately I did not find an application level firewall in Ubuntu up to now. This is especially annoying when I am abroad using data-roaming with my 3G modem. Is there a way to prevent my wine-apps sending or receiving data without my knowledge. Thanks in advance! YSN

  • Blogger.com kills FTP

    History (you can safely ignore) Back in 2002 I came across some (almost) free Linux/Apache space and set up my first manually-created HTML-based home page, which still exists: http://www.danielmoth.com/. In 2004 I wanted to have a blog that would be hosted on a sub-folder of my domain, and at the same time I did not want to mess with setting up a blog engine myself. I found the perfect solution in blogger.com, which offered a web interface for creating blog posts (and managing the pages' template) and it would then use FTP to upload HTML pages to my space (no server-side programming/installation required at all)! FTP feature dropped by blogger.com Unfortunately, along the way Google purchased blogger.com and a couple of months ago they announced that they decided to kill the FTP feature, and they are forcing customers using that feature to have their content hosted (in an opaque way) on Google's servers. Even though I prefer having my content on my own space, I would have considered moving it to Google's servers if I could host my blog in a sub-folder and preserve my full blog URL: http://www.danielmoth.com/Blog/ (including my home pages being hosted at the root of the domain). Sadly, that is not possible. What now So I decided to move my blog somewhere else. I'll document on the next few posts how I did that (inc. a tool I wrote) in case it helps someone else in the same situation and also as a reminder to me if I need to do something like this again in the future.   • ip addresses/domain names are geographical bound?

    i wonder if ips are bound to specific geolocations? lets say that i've got this ip 111.111.111.111 from my ISP to my home computer in France. is it possible for me to use this ip in Norway? and the same goes with domain names. if iv'e got a domain name like mydomain.de, does it mean that my computer has to be in Germany or could it be located in Denmark? cause i always wonder where the actual server is located every time a website got different top level domains, eg google.dk, google.fr, google.de and so on. are they located in same country as the top domain or doesnt it matter?

  • Picasa “sync to web” folders do not stay in sync

    I have multiple folders from the Picasa software that were moved to my Google+ profile using the "sync to web" feature. At some point I noticed that some of these folders were on Google+ and had the green upload arrow in Picasa, however the "sync to web" option was disabled. I tried to re-enable the "sync to web" option and it starts loading but after a few seconds the "sync to web" option is back to disabled. I get no error message, it just switches back to disable. Is there any way I could leave the option enabled? Out of around 80 something albums synced to Google+ only 3-4 are not able to have the "sync to web" option enabled. Thanks.

  • Open Source vs. Closed Source? Which one to choose? [closed]

    So far, I was always creating open-source applications (or didn't publish them at all) because it was free for me to create a new CodePlex project, and upload everything. Couple of days ago I started wandering what kind of apps should I make, closed or open source. I can see "cons" and "pros" in both such as the ones below: Open Source: Pro, free project hosting (CodePlex is excellent for .NET app updates. ClickOnce etc) Pro, free help such as developers and designers Con, people can get your source code and (sometimes) use some of your code in their apps and make money Con, companies such as Microsoft, Twitter or Tumblr won't be looking forward in buying your project (like for example Twitter bought TweetDeck - TweetDeck being a closed source AIR application, of course) Closed Source: Pro, it's harder for people to copy your idea without the source code Pro, you're more likely to get acquired/bought by companies Con, no free hosting - you have to have a website to do so (not good for updates) Con, no free help What do you think? What do you think I should choose?

    Does Googlebot-Mobile have a viewport resolution it sends across? If so, what is it? It's a general question with broad relevance, but I am asking with reference to responsive design: particularly when serving different image resolution to different viewports via JavaScript. While Googlebot has its issues with JavaScript, it will become better with time. Thus, it would be good to know which version of the same image would be crawled (since most responsive image JS solutions base their logic on resolution).   • Control Sysinternals Suite & NirSoft Utilities with a Single Interface

    Sysinternals and NirSoft both provide helpful utilities for your Windows system but may not be very convenient to access. Using the Windows System Control Center you can easily access everything through a single UI front end. Setup The first thing to do is set up three new folders in Program Files (or Program Files (x86) if you are using a 64bit system) with the following names (the first two need to exactly match what is shown here): Sysinternals Suite NirSoft Utilities (create this folder only if you have any of these apps downloaded) Windows System Control Center (or WSCC depending on your preferences) Unzip the contents of the Sysinternals Suite into its’ folder. Then unzip any individual NirSoft Utilities programs that you have downloaded into the NirSoft folder. All that is left to do is to unzip the WSCC software into its’ folder and create a shortcut. WSCC in Action When you start WSCC up for the first time you will see the following message with a brief explanation about the software. Next the options window will appear providing you an opportunity to look around and make any desired changes. WSCC can access utilities for both suites using a live connection if needed (utilities accessed live are not downloaded). Note: This occurs on the first run only. This is the main WSCC window…you can choose the utility that you want to use by sorting through an all items list or based on category. Note: WSCC may occasionally experience a problem downloading a particular utility if using the live service. We conducted a quick test by accessing two Sysinternals apps. First PsInfo… Followed by DiskView. Both opened quickly and were ready to go. There were no NirSoft Utilities installed on our test system in order to provide a live access example. Within moments WSCC accessed the CurrProcess utility and had it running on our system. Our recommendation is to download your favorite utilities from both suites (in order to always have easy access to them). Conclusion WSCC provides an easy way to access all of the apps in the Sysinternals Suite and NirSoft Utilities in one place. Note: A PortableApps version is also available.   • Where in the user profile are the Firefox search engine choices stored?

    We have a large number of user profiles that were created on Ubuntu 10.04 and they had access to Google as a choice in the search bar and Google was the provider for queries typed into the super bar. When logging into these same profiles from Mint 15 client machines, the Google search option does not exist for these users, as is the default for Mint. This setting seems to be user specific, but not a part of the FireFox profile? It seems if it were a part of the FF profile, it would "just work" on Mint for these profiles, so I suspect the configuration may be stored somewhere else in the user's profile? Could someone please tell me where in a user's profile the search engine options are set? We would like to set this once, and then drop this configuration into everyones profile so all of our users don't have to do this manually.

    Hello, My question is probably very easy to answer but I have been struggling with this the whole day. Actually, I would like to change my smtp.mail name and account that is shown as sending the emails in the header. I changed the "From" but it shows only in the "visible" part of the email and there are values that are different in the header. In this example : Received-SPF: pass (google.com: domain of [email protected] designates 67.221.174.127 as permitted sender) client-ip=67.221.174.127; Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=pass (google.com: domain of [email protected] designates 67.221.174.127 as permitted sender) [email protected]; dkim=pass (test mode) [email protected] [email protected] account=bounce Thank you in advance!

    v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);} Fusion HCM SaaS – Integration A typical implementation pattern we’re seeing with Fusion Apps early adopters is implementing a few Fusion HCM applications that bring the most benefit to their company with the least disruption to existing programs and interfaces. Very often this ends up being Fusion Goals & Performance, Talent, Compensation or Benefits, often with Taleo for recruiting. The implementation picture looks like what you see below: Here, you can see that all the “downstream integrations” from the On-Premise Core HR, are unaffected because the master for employee data is still your On-Premise Core HR system – all updates and new hires are made here (although they may be fed in from Taleo to start with). As a second phase when customers migrate Core HR to Fusion HCM, they have to come up with a strategy to manage integrations to all their downstream applications that require employee details. For customers coming from EBS HR, a short term strategy that allows for minimal impact, is to extract employee data from Fusion (Via HCM Extract), and load the shared EBS HR tables (which are part of an EBS Financials install anyways), and let your downstream integrations continue to function based on this data as shown below. If you are not coming from EBS HR and there are license implications, you may want to consider: Creating an On-Premise warehouse for extracting data from Fusion Apps. Leveraging Fusion Apps Web Services (available to SaaS customers starting R7) to directly retrieve/write data to Fusion Apps. Integration Tools File Based Loader This is the primary mechanism for loading HCM data (both initial load and incremental updates) into Fusion HCM. Employee & related data can be uploaded into Fusion HCM using File Based Loader. Note that ability to schedule File Based Loader to run on a pre-defined schedule will be available as a patch on top of Rel 5. Hr2Hr has been deprecated in favor of File Based Loader, but for existing customers using Hr2Hr, here are some sample scripts that show how to get more informative error messages. They can be run by creating data model sql queries in BI Publisher. The scripts currently have hard coded values for request id and loader batch id, which your developer will need to update to the correct values for you. The BI Publisher Training Session recorded on Apr 18th is available here (under "Recordings"). This will enable a somewhat technical resource to create a data model sql query.   • 2 Birds, 1 Stone: Enabling M2M and Mobility in Healthcare

    Jim Connors has created a video showcase of a comprehensive healthcare solution, connecting a mobile application directly to an embedded patient monitoring system. In the demo, Jim illustrates how you can easily build solutions on top of the Java embedded platform, using Oracle products like Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. Jim is running Apache Tomcat on an embedded device, using Berkeley DB as the data store. BDB is transparently linked to an Oracle Database backend using  Database Mobile Server. Information protection is important in healthcare, so it is worth pointing out that these products offer strong data encryption, for storage as well as transit. In his video, Jim does a great job of demystifying M2M. What's compelling about this demo is that uses a solution architecture that enterprise developers are already comfortable and familiar with: a Java apps server with a database backend. The additional pieces used to embed this solution are Oracle Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. It functions transparently, from the perspective of Java apps developers. This means that organizations who understand Java apps (basically everyone) can use this technology to develop embedded M2M products. The potential uses for this technology in healthcare alone are immense; any device that measures and records some aspect of the patient could be linked, securely and directly, to the medical records database. Breathing, circulation, other vitals, sensory perception, blood tests, x-rats or CAT scans. The list goes on and on. In this demo case, it's a testament to the power of the Java embedded platform that they are able to easily interface the device, called a Pulse Oximeter, with the web application. If Jim had stopped there, it would've been a cool demo. But he didn't; he actually saved the most awesome part for the end! At 9:52 Jim drops a bombshell: He's also created an Android app, something a doctor would use to view patient health data from his mobile device. The mobile app is seamlessly integrated into the rest of the system, using the device agent from Oracle's Database Mobile Server. In doing so, Jim has really showcased the full power of this solution: the ability to build M2M solutions that integrate seamlessly with mobile applications. In closing, I want to point out that this is not a hypothetical demo using beta or even v1.0 products. Everything in Jim's demo is available today. What's more, every product shown is mature, and already in production at many customer sites, albeit not in the innovative combination Jim has come up with. If your customers are in the market for these type of solutions (and they almost certainly are) I encourage you to download the components and try it out yourself!   • How to comply with this guideline for submitting an application to the Software Center?

    I was reading through the Ubuntu Developer Programme Agreement for submitting applications to the Software Center and stubled across the following clause: 3.1 You must first test Apps you submit to confirm they are compatible with all currently supported versions of Ubuntu (as listed on Canonical's website at the date of submission by you) and your Apps must comply with the Publishing Policy. Does this mean I must install both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, and 11.10? If so, that's 10 installations of Ubuntu - is that really feasible (even with virtual machines)? Alternatively, does anyone have suggestions for testing the application without actually installing each version? Some sort of chroot tool, perhaps?

  • Professional iOS Development as a Backup Career [closed]

    I am a research chemist by day and I am a self-taught hobbyist iOS programmer by night. I am in the process of developing a moderately complex iOS app and hope to launch it within a month or two. I love everything about iOS development (and programming in general). I want to know if iOS development could become a backup career for me if I loose my job. My question: Let's say I had a couple of apps in the app store, a solid foundation in objective-C and the apple frameworks and basic knowledge on network integrated apps. Without a formal CS degree, what other experience/knowledge would I need to land a job as a professional iOS developer? Forgive me if this question is out of bounds for this forum. If it is, suggestions on where to post such a question would be appreciated.
