• Why wasn't C# designed with 'const' for variables and methods?

- by spoulson
I suspect const was simplified for the C# spec for general language simplicity. Was there a specific reason we can't declare variable references or methods as const like we can with C++? e.g.: const MyObject o = new MyObject(); // Want const cast referenece of MyObject o.SomeMethod(); // Theoretically legal because SomeMethod is const o.ChangeStuff(); // Theoretically illegal because ChangeStuff is not const class MyObject { public int val = 0; public void SomeMethod() const { // Do stuff, but can't mutate due to const declaration. } public void ChangeStuff() { // Code mutates this instance. Can't call with const reference. val++; } }

• Python: How To copy function parameters into object's fields effortlessly ?

- by bandana
Many times I have member functions that copy parameters into object's fields. For Example: class NouveauRiches(object): def __init__(self, car, mansion, jet, bling): self.car = car self.mansion = mansion self.jet = jet self.bling = bling Is there a python language construct that would make the above code less tedious? One could use *args: def __init__(self, *args): self.car, self.mansion, self.jet, self.bling = args +: less tedious -: function signature not revealing enough. need to dive into function code to know how to use function -: does not raise a TypeError on call with wrong # of parameters (but does raise a ValueError) Any other ideas? (Whatever your suggestion, make sure the code calling the function does stays simple)

• maximum of given function

- by davit-datuashvili
first of all i am doing programs in java language this code is merely taken from web site i have not question about divide and conqurer but about function and it's argument here is code of ternary search def ternarySearch(f, left, right, absolutePrecision): #left and right are the current bounds; the maximum is between them if (right - left) < absolutePrecision: return (left + right)/2 leftThird = (2*left + right)/3 rightThird = (left + 2*right)/3 if f(leftThird) < f(rightThird): return ternarySearch(f, leftThird, right, absolutePrecision) return ternarySearch(f, left, rightThird, absolutePrecision) i am not asking once again how implement it in java i am asking for example how define function?for example let y=x^+3 yes we can determine it as public static int y(int x){ return x*x+3; } but here return ternarySearch(f, leftThird, right, absolutePrecision) function f does not have argument and how do such?please help me

• Aren't passwords written in inputbox vulnerable through a stack trace ?

- by loursonwinny
Hello, I am not a guru of the stack tracing, at all. I even don't know how to get some. Anyway, I am wondering if entering a password entered in an inputbox is safe. Can't it be retrieved by getting a stack trace ? A password entered that way will be found in many places : Caption property of the TEdit Result of the function which creates the inputbox probably, a variable that stores the Result of the InputBox Command etc... If the answer is "yes, it is a vulnerability", then my world collapses :p. What can be done to avoid that vulnerability hole ? NOTE : The InputBox is an example but it can be with a "homebrewed" login prompt. InputBox is a Delphi command but I haven't tagged the question with the Delphi tag because I suppose that the question concerns any language. Thanks for reading

• Why There is a difference between assembly languages like Windows, Linux ?

- by mcaaltuntas
I am relatively new to all this low level stuff, assembly language.. and want to learn more detail. Why there is a difference between Linux, Windows Assembly languages? As I understand when I compile a C code Operating system does not really produce pure machine or assembly code, it produces OS dependent binary code. But why ? For example when I use a x86 system, CPU only understands x86 ASM am I right?.So Why we dont write pure x86 assembly code and why there are different assembly variations based on Operating system? If we would write pure ASM or OS produce pure ASM there wouldn't be binary compatilibty issues between Operating systems or Not ? I am really wondering all reasons behind them. Any detailed answer, article, book would be great. Thanks.

• Cheap Wifi enabled Android or other programmable device

- by Darran
Does anyone know of a cheap Android or programmable device that has wifi? I need it for a project for a company that needs a wifi handheld device for the shop floor. Im not too fussed about the language the device uses though Im not really interested in the iTouch as theres no intention to release the app in the app store and I don`t really want to jail break everybodys iTouch. Ideally it would be small , iTouch size for example and relatively cheap $100 or less. Nothing fancy just ability to write a simple UI and have wifi. Voice is not needed. Not too fussed about touch or qwerty keyboard either.

Currently I have a client and admin webpage. There are multiple users who will login to the client page. While in admin page, when I restored the database inside the admin page, I need to logout all the users who are currently login to the client page. Any ideas how it should be done? • Bit conversion operations in PHP

- by Goro
Hello, I find myself in need of performing bit-level conversion on variables in PHP. In more detail, I have a bit stream that is read as an integer by hardware, and I need to do some operations on the bits to make it into what its actually supposed to be (a float). I have to do this a few times for different formats, and the functionality I need is Being able to select and move individual bits in a variable Being able to cast statically one type of variable to the other (ie. int to float) I know php natively supports bitwise AND, OR, etc, and shift operations, but I was wondering if: there may already be a library in php that does this sort of thing I would be better off with delegating the calculations to some other language Thanks,

• Error message in XSLT with C# extension function

- by iHeartGreek
Hi! I am received the following error while trying to implement a C# extension function in XSLT. Extension function parameters or return values which have CLR type 'Char[]' are not supported.** code: <xsl:variable name="stringList"> <xsl:value-of select="extension:GetList('AAA BBB CCC', ' ')"/> </xsl:variable> <msxsl:script language="C#" implements-prefix="extension"> public string[] GetList(string str, char[] delimiter) { ... ... return str.Split(delimiter, StringSplitOptions.None); } </msxsl:script> Can someone explain this error message and how to get past it? Thanks!

• What are the exact versions of stuff you have to install in order to be able to step-debug a Scala p

- by Alex R
How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using? My question is related to this one, but wider in scope: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2272705/how-to-debug-scala-code-when-outside-of-an-ide Thanks

• [Linux] Coding a GTK+ application without window manager?

- by ShoX
Hi, I want to code sth. that basically works like TiVo. Switch it on, you only see the menu or an output, so no underlying OS or anything else is directly visible to the user. So I want to use Linux as base. Can you suggest a good base distribution? Can I code a frontend without having a window-manager up and running? If yes, is that possible with java-gnome or what language/gui-framework combination would you suggest? If no, what's the minimal window manager that can handle fancy menus, etc? What does it take to create video-overlays over a HD-stream? Are there some libraries I should take a look at? Thanks

• How do you compare music data

- by Chris
i want to write an app to rename sort and organize my music library (mp3's, wav's, flac's). I wanted to take a portion of the song, say the first minutes, and compare that to a database and then retrieve the song name and tag information. I have heard that you can do this with last.fm but a look through their api info didn't help. My question is, what is this called so i can google it better? nothing i am trying is helping much. This would be similar to the shazam android app. My prefered language would be java, so i can run it on a few operating systems easier, but that might be subject to change depending on how i can do it. Thanks

• Nonstatic conversion functions; Casting different types, e.g. DirectX vector to OpenGL vector

- by Markus
I am currently working on a game "engine" that needs to move values between a 3D engine, a physics engine and a scripting language. Since I need to apply vectors from the physics engine to 3D objects very often and want to be able to control both the 3D, as well as the physics objects through the scripting system, I need a mechanism to convert a vector of one type (e.g. vector3d<float>) to a vector of the other type (e.g. btVector3). Unfortunately I can make no assumptions on how the classes/structs are laid out, so a simple reinterpret_cast probably won't do. So the question is: Is there some sort of 'static'/non-member casting method to achieve basically this: vector3d<float> operator vector3d<float>(btVector3 vector) { // convert and return } btVector3 operator btVector3(vector3d<float> vector) { // convert and return } Right now this won't compile since casting operators need to be member methods. (error C2801: 'operator foo' must be a non-static member)

• How to create a user customizable database (like Zoho creator) in Rails?

- by martjno
I'm learning Rails, and the target of my experiments is to realize something similar to Zoho Creator, Flexlist or Mytaskhelper, i.e. an app where the user can create his own database schema and views. What's the best strategy to pursue this? I saw something about the Entity-Attribute-Value but I'm not sure whether it's the best strategy or if there is some support in Rails for it. If there was any tutorial in Rails about a similar project it would be great. Probably it's not the easiest star for learning a new language and framework, but it would be something I really plan to do since a long time.

• How to communicate with Telecom infrastructure using .NET

- by Raiford
I am currently writing some pretty gnarly C#/C++/Cli code to interface with Telecommunication equipement and GSM Mobile Networks for a couple of the major telecom here and abroad. GSM networks primarily use SS7 Signaling using a protocol called TCAP to send messages back and forth to Signaling Points within the network. The laws of Tcp/ip do not apply here :) I am very interested in hearing from others in this space specifically individuals using the .NET framework most likely using C# / C++. I have not come across any .NET libraries or tools to assist in this sort of development. Most of the software in this industry is "C" / Java based, as a result I have written tons of infrastructure .NET code using C# where possible and C++ / CLI to interface with hardware. Is anyone aware of any .NET language tools for this niche industry?

• Why do date manipulation in Java with milliseconds?

- by staticsan
I was recently faced with the problem of calculating the number of days from two dates in Java (without using joda, I'm afraid). Searching on the 'net shows most answers to this question say to get the milliseconds of the two days and convert that to days, which I found appalling. However, a scant few show a different approach: use a temporary variable to count how many times it takes adding 1 day to the first date to get to the second. This leaves the conversions to the code that does it best: the library. Why do so many people advocate the first? In another project, I had previously encountered numerous subtle date calculation problems involving time-zones, daylight-saving and once even leap years using seconds to do date comparisions and calculations. All these went away when all the comparison and calculation code was rewitten to use the language libraries. (This was in PHP, though, where the libraries are structured quite differently to Java.) So I'm understandably reluctant to use this "common wisdom" in the world of Java about comparing dates.

• Ruby/python Script to convert html text to plain text in csv file

- by Miau
Hi all: So i have a large(ish) file in a csv format, that contains a column that has html and i need to transform that to plain text (ie readable by people ,ie with no script tags) I dont have much experience with ruby, but it seems like the perfect language to do this The File should still be in a cv format after the parsing ( ie, other columns should nto be disturbed) Helpz? Fair enough, I thought there might be a library that does that as long as the html was valid. The file looks something liek this "xxxx-15454ss", "xome name", "<div class=""myClass"">The Vintage Junior offers the same specs as the Vintage Series but only in 3/4 Size ideal for Kids. the 57 Model is great value for a good quality guitar. For more info go to <a href=""www.somehting.com"">something
" I m trying to include the common html tags we would be using Thanks

• Why is 'virtual' optional for overridden methods in derived classes?

- by squelart
When a method is declared as virtual in a class, its overrides in derived classes are automatically considered virtual as well, and the C++ language makes this keyword virtual optional in this case: class Base { virtual void f(); }; class Derived : public Base { void f(); // 'virtual' is optional but implied. }; My question is: What is the rationale for making virtual optional? I know that it is not absolutely necessary for the compiler to be told that, but I would think that developers would benefit if such a constraint was enforced by the compiler. E.g., sometimes when I read others' code I wonder if a method is virtual and I have to track down its superclasses to determine that. And some coding standards (Google) make it a 'must' to put the virtual keyword in all subclasses.

• What is the best file format to parse?

- by anxiety
Scenario: I'm working on a rails app that will take data entry in the form of uploaded text-based files. I need to parse these files before importing the data. I can choose the file type uploaded to the app; the software used by those uploading has several export options regarding file type. While it may be insignificant, I was wondering if there is a specific file type that is most efficiently parsed. This question can be viewed as language-independent, I believe. (While XML is commonly parsed, it is not a feasible file type for sake of this project.)

• Does Ruby/Rails require more unit testing than say a PHP app?

- by Blankman
I don't find the unit testing push in the PHP market like I see/read in the ruby/rails arena. Could one just as easily NOT unit test in ruby/rails as in php, or is ruby just too bendable and breakable that it "more" recommended to test in ruby than in php? Meaning there are large code bases like vBulletin, and from what I can tell, they don't unit test. I hope you understand what I am asking here, not the pros/cons of testing, or whether one should test or not, but rather, does one language need to be tested more than another? maybe its easy to write buggy code, or break during refactoring etc.

• General question: Filesystem or database?

- by poeschlorn
Hey guys, i want to create a small document management system. there are several users who store their files. each file which is uploaded contains an info which user uploaded it and the document content itself. In a view there are displayed all files of ONE specific user, ordered by date. What would be better: 1) giving the documents a name or metadata(XML) which contain the date and user (and iterate through them to get the metadata) or 2) giving the files a random/unique name and store metadata in a DB? something like this: date | user | filename What would you say and why? The used programming language is java and the DB is MySQL.

• Using R to open grib files

- by robin girard
I am using R to work with meteorological data. I proceed in two steps: 1- convert grib to netcdf using the commande line function ncl_convert2nc from ncar command language 2- use package ncdf in R to import the netcdf data. I have two problems: 1- I would like to do automatic treatment of many files within R. Can I call ncl_convert2nc within R ? 2- For some particular grib files, the convertion with ncar tool does not work. Is there other ways or trick (other than transcription into netcdf) to read grib files in R ?

• any ways saving user information without db

- by hguser
Hi: I have a application which require login, but the number of user who use the application is no more than 40. And In the application,I get some data from the sql server database where I juse have read permission, also I can not create a table in the db for user validate. ALso I do not think it is a good idea to create a user table in other database on another machine.(for example,I can create a user table in the mysql another machine, but is it desireable just for user validating)? Now I just save the user info in a .properties file, any other good idea? BTW,the programe language used in my application is java.
