• How to re-do the hard disks in a WD Word Book Edition II ?

  I recently purchased a WD World Book II, a 2 TB one. I call it the "White Box". It has those 2 1TB drives, and they were in this RAID 1 config, only giving me about 1 TB. I could not delete the raid array, and I took the drives in a Linux box. But I also deleted the entire partitions of the disks, and I cannot even et the existing RAID array on this WD White Box. The drives are fine, but I cannot get them to work on the WD White Box. My goal was to get back to a real 2 TB storage space. If I cannot get those drives back in the White Box, I can re-use them elsewhere, but this would mean a waste of the firmware and network connection. After the fact, I read that, anyway, the network performance is rather poor. Thanks :-)

• Simplify Your Code with LINQ

  I’m a big fan of LINQ and use it wherever I can to minimize code and make applications easier to maintain overall. I was going through a code file today refactoring it based on suggestions provided by Resharper and came across the following method: private List<string> FilterTokens(List<string> tokens) { var cleanedTokens = new List<string>(); for (int i = 0; i < tokens.Count; i++) { string token = tokens[i]; if (token != null) { cleanedTokens.Add(token); } } return cleanedTokens; }   In looking through the code I didn’t see anything wrong but Resharper was suggesting that I convert it to a LINQ expression: In thinking about it more the suggestion made complete sense because I simply wanted to add all non-null token values into a List<string> anyway. After following through with the Resharper suggestion the code changed to the following. Much, much cleaner and yet another example of why LINQ (and Resharper) rules: private List<string> FilterTokens(IEnumerable<string> tokens) { return tokens.Where(token => token != null).ToList(); }

• Install remote desktop session host remotely

  I've removed the remote desktop host role from one of my Azue VM, so I can't RDP into it. I have tried to recreate the endpoints and even the VM with no luck. I can't either access remotely with Server Manager; getting this error: The client cannot connect to the destination specified in the request. Verify that the services on the destination is running" I cannot connect remotely to the registry Make sure this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and that both computers are running the remote registry service PsPing tells me The remote computer refuses the network connection Which workaround can I follow to solve this?

• ubuntu server 10 - slow and can't remove desktop environment

  i'm running ubuntu server 10.10 with the desktop environment. simple page requests are taking over 5 seconds even when connecting to the server through our local network. i believe this is partially related to having the desktop environment installed, as the server worked faster (but not as fast as it should considering that it's on the local network), but tasksel fails every time (aptitude failed 100). my knowledge of networking and linux in general is limited. would really appreciate ideas on how i can troubleshoot this problem. oh also, in the system monitor, one of the processors is almost always around 100%. i doubt this is normal too....

• OOP concept: is it possible to update the class of an instantiated object?

  I am trying to write a simple program that should allow a user to save and display sets of heterogeneous, but somehow related data. For clarity sake, I will use a representative example of vehicles. The program flow is like this: The program creates a Garage object, which is basically a class that can contain a list of vehicles objects Then the users creates Vehicles objects, these Vehicles each have a property, lets say License Plate Nr. Once created, the Vehicle object get added to a list within the Garage object --Later on--, the user can specify that a given Vehicle object is in fact a Car object or a Truck object (thus giving access to some specific attributes such as Number of seats for the Car, or Cargo weight for the truck) At first sight, this might look like an OOP textbook question involving a base class and inheritance, but the problem is more subtle because at the object creation time (and until the user decides to give more info), the computer doesn't know the exact Vehicle type. Hence my question: how would you proceed to implement this program flow? Is OOP the way to go? Just to give an initial answer, here is what I've came up until now. There is only one Vehicle class and the various properties/values are handled by the main program (not the class) through a dictionary. • Getting 0x80070043 error when accessing Samba share from Windows 7

  I created a Samba share on my new Ubuntu 10.04 machine. When I try to access it from a Windows 7 client, I get network error 0x80070043 (The network path not found). However, I get this error when I click on the share in the Windows Explorer, so it seems that Windows does find the path. I already enabled NTLMv1, disabled 128bit security and made sure that NetBIOS is running. I briefly disabled the Windows firewall, it didn't make a difference. What could be the problem?

• no way to use opendns on pppoe connection?

  I have an old speedtouch usb modem (revision 0) and on my desktop with xubuntu 12.04 I've configured a pppoe connection. I can connect and my ISP assign an IP address and the DNS but the primary DNS address is not reachable by ping, the secondary yes but no address is resolved then I can't surf the web. Then I want to set the open DNS but there is bo way, if I change manually /etc/resolv.conf it is rewrited by some script (there is the flag usepeerdns on the configuration script, if I exclude it there is no way to assign any DNS server because resolv.conf is not read) also if I set not writable the file changing the default permission. I changed dhclient.conf with the code prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220; and now if I connect by a wifi connection to my router I'm using openDNS server but ppp does not use this script as long as I can see and the DNS server is always setted by my ISP. How can I use set DNS manually to a PPP connection? Is there any way to change it after the connection? Why NetworkManager is not able to manage my dsl connection, it seems not able to manage the dsl usb cable modem. If I use pppoeconf NetworkManager doesn't start and I have to manually delete the lines added to /etc/network/interfaces because the system is not able to start with full configuration of network If I connect a modem-router to the same line I can surf with the DNS server assigned by my ISP, I can't figure why. • What is the correct way to restart udev in Ubuntu?

  I've changed the name of my eth1 interface to eth0. How to ask udev now to re-read the config? service udev restart and udevadm control --reload-rules don't help. So is there any valid way except of rebooting? (yes, reboot helps with this issue) UPD: yes, I know I should prepend the commands with sudo, but either one I posted above changes nothing in ifconfig -a output: I still see eth1, not eth0. UPD 2: I just changed the NAME property of udev-rule line. Don't know any reason for this to be ineffective. There is no any error in executing of both commands I've posted above, but they just don't change actual interface name in ifconfig -a output. If I perform reboot - then interface name changes as expected. UPD 3: let I explain all the case better ;-) For development purposes I write some script that clones virtual machines (VirtualBox-driven) and pre-sets them up in some way. So I perform a command to clone VM, start it and as long as network interface MAC is changed - udev adds the second rule to network persistent rules. Right after machine is booted for the first time there are 2 rules: eth0, which does not exist, as long as it existed in the original VM image MAC eth1, which exists, but all the configuration in all files refers to eth0, so it is not that good for me So I with sed delete the line with eth0 (it is obsolete and useless in cloned image) and replace eth1 with eth0. So currently I have valid persistent rule, but there is still eth1 in /dev. The issue: I don't want to reboot the machine (it will take another time, which is not good thing on building-VM-stage) and just want to have my /dev rebuilt with some command so I have ready-to-use VM without any reboots.

• Setup Windows Media Player 11 to stream from TVersity

  I've got TVersity installed on a Windows 2003 server box (work had an extra license that they donated to let me install at home to get some practice setting up/administering a domain etc.) I found out that Windows Media Player 11 won't install on Windows 2003, but installed TVersity instead and streaming to my 360 is working great. Problem is that I don't know how to setup streaming to any other PC on the network. All of the PCs have access to the shared network folder, but playing from there doesn't stream and the stutter is pretty bad. Is there a way to setup Windows Media Player 11 or another player to stream from TVersity?

• Questioning the motivation for dependency injection: Why is creating an object graph hard?

  Dependency injection frameworks like Google Guice give the following motivation for their usage (source): To construct an object, you first build its dependencies. But to build each dependency, you need its dependencies, and so on. So when you build an object, you really need to build an object graph. Building object graphs by hand is labour intensive (...) and makes testing difficult. But I don't buy this argument: Even without dependency injection, I can write classes which are both easy to instantiate and convenient to test.   Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • Internet Working, Browsing Not.

  I have a very odd problem that I can't resolve. I am connected to the internet, but my browsing doesn't work. I don't mean a web browser - I mean browsing. Firefox, Chrome, Curl all fail to successfully connect to an HTTP address. However existing connections, e.g. to mail in Outlook (Exchange Server and also IMAP server) continue to work. Also, the internet is on, I can confirm both from my machine (other ports / connections) as well as from any other computer connected to the same network. Additionally, it appears to be HTTP, not simple a port issue as HTTP over port 8443 (Tortoise SVN if you must know - running over HTTP not over SVN) also fails. I am using Windows Vista SP2 (build 6002). It seems to "creep up" in that after running the computer for a few hours it will fail. (No found way to systematically reproduce the problem.) Additionally, it seems to be more prone on days where the internet connection is flaky already (not sure why the internet is flaky, just is, lot's of failed browsing requests and have to retry/reload often). What I have tried (when the problem arises) - none have yielded any resolution: Resetting the network connection (dis-connect, re-connect) Disable/re-enable the network adapter Double-checked the ip settings Double-checked the HOSTS file. Note: DNS continues to work (both new and cached responses to DNS queries). (Thanks for the suggestion Daniel and antenore.) Checked the routing tables (ip4 only as ipv6 is beyond my understanding) resetting all involved hardware (routers and modems) Close and reopen browsers Looked for malware interference: Run HijackThis Looked for suspicious processes using SysInternals procexp. Looked for explorer hijacks, lsa provider interference, winsock provider interference using SysInternals Autoruns. Run a complete anti-virus scan. Reviewed the output of a netstat -onab to see if there were stuck ports open or unusual processes running somewhere The only thing that works is to do a full reboot. That works 100% of the time to restore browsing. What else can I try to nail down the problem?

  I have a UDP packet capture which was streamed from Port1 on IP1 to Port2 on IP2 on network N1. I need to replay these packets on another network N2 from Port3 on IP3 to Port4 on IP4. I need to know what software to use in order to do this and how I would go about replaying these packets so that I can detect/capture them again in N2. So far, I've tried strictly replaying these packets using a program called Colasoft Packet Player, with little luck. I'd appreciate any help on this. Thank you in advance

• Port Forwarding for Remote Desktop

  I have two Mac notebooks at home, I have assigned them static private IPs. I have also set my router to a DynDNS address, which updates everytime my router gets a new public IP. I have enabled Screen Sharing on both notebooks. I can successfully goto my router webpage using the DynDNS address. I understand I need to port-forward to get Screen Sharing to work from outside. Lets assume, notebooks have private IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 I am kind of lost here, would appreciate some help (I need to be able remote desktop to both notebooks)

• How to set up Windows server 2008 to receive email?

  First off apologies, I'm from a medical background not a networking one, but I've got roped into setting up a windows 2008 server. So far web server running, fixed IP address assigned (within a large private network of the National Health Service in the UK if that makes any difference) and the network team have assigned a DNS entry for me which works, so the server can be addressed as nww.myserver.nhs.uk I've only got ports open on the router for 80 and 443 (http and https) at the moment, so presume I need a different port to enable email services. My need is to be able to accept an email to the domain name like [email protected] in order to pick up a confirmation mail from an SSL issuer (Comodo) I guess to confirm that I control the domain. After that I don't actually need mail services on the server. I see lots of stuff about setting up SMTP services but thought that was about mail out and re-routing, but how do you get the server to "listen" for mail to the domain (assuming I open port xyz or whatever it is) ?

• Rsync like windows backup tool

  Hi, I need to backup some windows machines and have been unable to find the proper tool. What I need is a tool that does efficient copying of changed files to a windows network location, like Rsync does. In turn, the server will then back that up using rdiff-backup, a tool which does very clever incremental backups. Right now I'm using windows' 7 included backup feature, but I really don't get that. It's too much off-topic, but it doesn't suffice (seems buggy as well). I looked into Amanda, but as soon as it wanted to install MySQL, I aborted. I also tried Deltacopy, but unfortunately, I don't remember what the problem with that was... Any advice for an rsync like tool that just does daily syncs to a network location?

• Protecting Windows SMTP service against the spam

  Hi, I'm trying to use a Windows SMTP service on Windows Server 2008, but I can't understand how to secure it. Basically, if I open firewall for local network IPs only for %windir%\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe and keep Connection and Relay settings of SMTP Virtual Server to "All except the list below" (with an empty list), a few minutes later I see spam appearing in Queue directory. (Why? Isn't firewall intended to block this?) Now, if I set Connection or Relay to "Only the list below", specifying the range of local IPs, I can't use the SMTP server nevermore (a "Unable to read data from the transport connection: net_io_connectionclosed." exception is thrown). So what is the way to get rid of spam from internet but let send mails from local network?

• Replicate GAE Datastore On A Server LAN in Java

  There may be instances wherein one Company Client may not have internet connection on their vicinity. Either their Internet Service Provider currently experience a down time or there are some other problems involving the network, but not their LAN. GAE seems to be needing a connection at all times in the internet. I only need GAE Datastore. I'm thinking about a different application. Creating a Java Swing Client, for instance, and connecting to the Office Server via HRD of GAE Datastore. When I tried to check on the solutions for Java, it does not say anything about uploading all data and I do not need the App. I just need the GAE Datastore. In Java GAE, only indexes can be able to be manipulated. So, is there any tricks/ideas that you can use HRD with GAE Datastore on Java with an Internal Office Server combined? This way, it may provide service even during network down times. (Can somebody create me a tag of gae-datastore, please.)

I've installed Clonezilla-SE on ubuntu Server 10.10, once installed and configured Clonezilla Server i've removed the DHCP-Server and set pxe server address in dnsmasq configuration on DHCP Server : dhcp-boot=pxelinux.0,,192.168.1.100 When i try to start from PXE a Computer in the network clonezilla start, but give me an error that the ipddress of the machine is not given by the clonezilla server and can't continue ... Someone has already tried to configure Clonezilla-SE in a similar enviroment? Is there some configuration on DRBL server of Clonezilla that i need to do ?
