  I've just listened to Steve Gibson talk about his SpinRite software, on the Security Now podcast episode 336 (transscript). At 33:20 he says: I can show and do show on the SMART page that sectors are being relocated and that errors are being corrected. That SMART analysis page sometimes scares people because it shows, wait a minute, this thing says we're correcting so many errors per megabyte. What is this SMART page? 1) Some information saved on the HD by SMART, that I can access with a SMART tool like smartmontools? 2) A page (tab) in his SpinRite software? In any case, can I see, in any way, what sectors are marked as bad, without using SpinRite? Preferably using smartmontools!

• Can I prevent tv-out from disconnecting when monitor sleeps?

  I have my TV connected to my computer (windows 7) through an HDMI cable that also carries the sound. I like to put on music on my TV, but the problem is when my monitor goes to sleep back in my office, it switches off the hdmi connection completely and the audio goes back to my PC. I would like a way to stop this from happening without turning off sleep mode entirely. I have an ATi Radeon 5700

  Hello, I'm having trouble installing Tix on OSX the version of Tix I am using is 8.4.3.   I have Windows 7 64-bit running in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook, but am disappointed with the performance, and so I want to try Boot Camp. However, I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows and all my applications; I just want to somehow copy my VMWare Fusion "disk image" to a Boot Camp partition. My initial thoughts are that I should be able to run a Windows backup program in VMWare Fusion to back up the entire virtual disk, then set up Boot Camp and restore from that backup. However, Googling finds a few posts by people who have tried that and have encountered problems. So, is there a "known good" procedure for doing this?

• How do I fix a corrupt .cab file?

  In Windows XP, I have a folder of install files- an .exe pointing to 3 Setup.cab files. As the install progresses, it hangs on Setup2.cab as it installs tutorial_page.chm (a Help file). I have 3 options when it hangs: Abort, Retry and Ignore. Both Abort and Ignore rollback the install and exit. But if I keep pressing Retry the install will progress & this action has successfully installed the program (eventually) for me. I AM WONDERING IF I CAN EXTRACTRE-PACKAGE THE .CAB? From the installed program can I grab the help.chm file and replace it into Setup2.cab for a successful install? The normal input method for Chinese within Windows 7 allows me to input Chinese, but does not work perfectly, because it does not recognize I am using a French keyboard - it presumes I am using a English keybord... So for some keys, what I type on the keybord is not what the input method gives on the screen... Could anyone help on this?

• Can I make Terminal.app open different profiles with shortcut like iTerm?

  I've been using iTerm for a while, but I switched back to Terminal.app in Snow Leopard due to the Visor plugin. Most of thing works pretty well after I switched to Terminal.app, except in iTerm, I can create different profiles and assign each profile with key shortcut. The advantage of this setup is that I can have non-transparency and transparency profile. If I need to look up a command on the background, I can start a transparency shell, and vice versa. I was thinking to use Mac built-in "Application shortcut" in System preference. Though, I realize in Terminal.app, the "New Window" and "New Tab" have the same profile names, so the Application shortcut is confused and I can't assign a shortcut to it... Any thought on how to change menu name on Terminal (or even better, any application?) Thanks for your help.

  I'm using the newest version of Gmail, as far as I know, and there used to be the option in Settings - Labels that said "Show in IMAP" next to label/folder names. This option is no longer there, unfortunately. How do I hide specific labels/folders, e.g. All Mail, from Thunderbird, my IMAP client? In both Firefox 17.0 and Chromium 20.0.1132.47 on Ubuntu 12.04, without an extensions, these options do not appear, so it doesn't appear to be a browser issue. In the past, I had to enable "Advanced IMAP Controls" in Settings - Labs for the "Show in IMAP" controls to appear, but according to this post, those controls "graduated" and should appear under Settings- Labels. What can I do to show or hide specific folders in IMAP?

• File Saving Sometimes Fails

  When I attempt to save files, it sometimes (randomly) fails. In Blender, I sometimes get "Version Backup Failed: File Saved With @". In Visual Studio, building sometimes fails with an error message indicating that the target file/exe cannot be overwritten. If I wait a bit, I can save fine. It's almost as if programs are taking an abnormal amount of time to 'let go' of the files. What could be causing this behaviour? This seems to be caused by Windows Live Mesh monitoring my files, and locking them whenever it uploads the new versions (BAD considering the amount of times I save my files, even redundantly). Any suggestions to work around this behaviour? Should I switch to a better service to sync my files?

• Windows, never "lose focus" of the current window

  I want the task bar to light up orange and never lose focus to anything. If I'm installing something and then go play a game at some point it will drop out to the finished instillation. Also, if installing multiple programs at once my 'next' button can all of sudden become "click here to install this crappy toolbar" of another program's install. Of course there are settings for some programs to not "lose focus" or "stay on top" but I really want windows to handle it. If its somehow an exe called say, Taskswtich.exe, I could possibly use Process Blocker however I'm assuming its part of a function call or some such. For XP I found this: How to disable auto focus of opened Windows applications? but what about Windows7? And this old post Preventing applications from stealing focus with a bunch of long answers that say "no". I'd appreciate this not being merged with a 4 year old question. I'd like to avoid 3rd party software. This is 2014, don't we know how to hack windows yet?

I do NOT want a image processing utility that could analyze the screenshots or a site that will ask questions about the font and narrow down from its list.   I've installed Microsoft's Virtual PC on Windows 7, but when I try to start a virtual machine I get the following error message: '<Virtual machine name' could not be started because hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled. Please enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS settings and try again. If hardware virtualization settings is already enabled, you may have to disable Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) setting in BIOS or update the system BIOS. However, if I download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool, it gives the following positive message: This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization. This computer meets the processor requirements to run Windows Virtual PC. If this computer runs a supported edition of Windows® 7, you can install Windows Virtual PC. I've also used the MSR Walker in the third-party utility CrystalCPUID to examine MSR 0x3a on both processors on my system, and it's 0x5 (0x4 = VT enabled, 0x1 = VT lock), as expected. Does anyone have any ideas of what else to check? Thanks.

• How do I configure nVidia drivers on a Portable Ubuntu setup?

  I've been pulling my hair out over this one for a couple of days now, google is no help. I've created a wonderful (until this issue) portable copy of Ubuntu linux that will boot on mostly anything by using a USB enclosure for my laptop's 80GB SATA drive. So far so good, it boots and runs on everything, and on non-nVidia card setups was even detecting the drivers, or letting me install the required drivers for hardware acceleration and compiz. Because you know, the wobble windows are the most awesome thing ever. Anyway, my desktop machine had an nVidia card, so I'm thinking, sure, I'll just install the nVidia drivers like before and everything will work happily. Not so-- now the desktop and any other nVidia cards work great, but it seems to have completely disabled any other graphics cards. When the kernel module detects that an nVidia card isn't present, it shoots up this nasty little dialog box giving me the option to boot into "low graphics" mode, which doesn't even allow me to use the correct screen resolution, much less see the installed graphics card and try to configure a driver for it. Is there any way to configure Ubuntu (with the dreaded nVidia kernel module) so that it can use nVidia's drivers when an nVidia card is present, and default to the normal (not low-graphics) setup in other cases, so that it has a fair chance of using what's actually present? I'm not afraid to much with config files, I just don't know the underlying system well enough to feel comfortable diving in without a push in the right direction. Thanks guys!

• Failures when copying between two external drives on the same controller

  I'm encountering a weird problem which is present both on Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, on two different machines. When trying to copy between two external drives connected to the same USB controller, the transfer will randomly hang at some random time (after copying 300MB, 1GB, 10GB - it doesn't appear to depend on the dataset being copied). The hang appears to happen faster in 10.04. It appears to happen slower if both drives are connected to a hub. If the drives are connected to 2 distinct physical ports on the machine, the hang will be very fast. Hangs cannot be reproduced if: Data is copied from the first external drive to an internal drive, then to the second external drive Drives are connected to different USB controllers, for example the first one is connected to the built-in controller and the second one via an external PCMCIA controller. lspci says the first machine has an Intel ICH9 USB controller, the second an Intel ICH4. Is this a hardware problem, a kernel problem or a software issue? I used Nautilus when copying the files.

• How can Windows XP/7 users cleanly connect to Mac OS X Server 10.9.4 Mavericks with Active Directory integration?

  I’m a Linux/Unix systems admin who also manages a Macintosh server infrastructure & there is a lone Mac Mini in the mix running 10.9.4 that I would like Windows XP & Windows 7 users to connect to with little or no hassle. The problem? Windows users can’t seem to even get to the point of a password prompt yet connect. Mind you this server replaced a Mac OS X 10.6.8 server that had issues, but never had issues with Windows users connected. The gist of this post is: The tons of different messages out there about Mac OS X 10.9.4 Samba support are mind-numbingly confusing. Can anyone share some solid specifics here? I’ve read pieces like this one here that suggest turning off file sharing & then adding a share with AFP/SMB enabled would work. But the suggestion seems to apply to 10.8. And from what I know a lot has changed in Samba support in 10.9 let alone the iterations to 10.9.4. Then I found this great tutorial here that explains things step-by-step. Which seems like it should work, but the problem is the example given applies to a local user created on the Mac when I would like users in an Active Directory group—which the Mac is bound to—access the Mac Mini shares. There are also tons of great tips here on MacWindows.com but nothing seems solid to the issue I am facing. So from what I am reading these are my options: Local User Versus Active Directory: Setup a common local user on the Mac OS X 10.9.4 server to be used for Samba sharing since Active Directory won’t work. Is this really the case? Because loss of AD integration is a major pain. Do Extended File Attributes Get Retained from Windows Users: If this were to work, how do extended attributes come into play? Loss of metadata & related info is not an option. How Fragile is Any of this to Updates: How does any of this shake out with Mac OS X updates as well as Windows updates? Installing Official, Open Source Samba: Would upgrading the Samba install on the server to the official open source Samba via a package like SMBUp or via the Hombrew method described here help or make the issue worse? I fully understand there have historically been issues in mixed environments, but nowadays Windows users connecting to a Mac seem to have a truly hellish road ahead of them. Unless I am missing something?

I have samples set to 1024 and the high quality button selected which I need to hear the sound.
