• Why can .NET not have memory leaks?

  Ignoring unsafe code, .NET cannot have memory leaks. I've read this endlessly from many experts and I believe it. However, I do not understand why this is so. It is my understanding that the framework itself is written in C++ and C++ is susceptible to memory leaks. Is the underlying framework so well-written, that it absolutely does not have any possibility of internal memory leaks? Is there something within the framework's code that self-manages and even cures its own would-be memory leaks? Is the answer something else that I haven't considered?

• Using an XML Catalog with a Java library that uses JAXP internally

  I'm using the Apache web service xml rpc library to make requests to an rpc service. Somewhere in that process is a xml document with a DTD reference to http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd, which the library attempts to download when parsing the XML. That download fails with a 503 status code because the w3c is blocking repeated downloads of this largely static document from Java clients. The solution is XML Catalogs to locally cache the DTD. However, while I can find examples of setting an EntityHandler on a JAXP SAXParser instance directly to enable catalog parser support, I don't actually have access to the underlying parser here. It's just being used by the xml rpc library. Is there any way I can set a global property or something that will tell JAXP to use XML catalogs?

• C# Throw Exception on use Assert?

  I have a system where the employeeId must alway exist unless there is some underlying problem. The way I see it, is that I have two choices to check this code: 1: public void GetEmployee(Employee employee) { bool exists = EmployeeRepository.VerifyIdExists(Employee.Id); if (!exists) { throw new Exception("Id does not exist); } } or 2: public void GetEmployee(Employee employee) { EmployeeRepository.AssertIfNotFound(Employee.Id); } Is option #2 acceptable in the C# language? I like it because it's tidy in that i don't like looking at "throw new Exception("bla bla bla") type messages outsite the class scope.

• OpenID and Iframes

  hey guys, I'm having a little bit of trouble making OpenID work from within an iframe. basically I have some heavy handed content loaded on the main page and I want to build a log in system where the page doesn't need to be reloaded (and thus reload all of that content again). I fell in love with OpenID from using stack exchange websites, and have intergrated it relatively well into other projects. I'm assuming that this is a counter measure put in place to stop me stealing login details (thats not what i'm trying to achieve btw, hence the preamble), and thats fair enough, but still bloody aggravating. is there any thing here that i'm doing retardedly, is there some way round this, and if neither of the above, is my only other options to create new windows or build my own login/registration. If you have got this far thank you very much for your time, and I hope you didn't mind too much the spelling mistakes.

Fortunately, I've found a workaround: if I create and use separate NSManagedObjectContext inside of the _configureCell:atIndexPath: method app won't crash! I only want to know, is this behavior correct or not?

• Integrating Pentaho/Talend/etc. with an OR Mapper

  We have an application (Java) with an own OR mapper. Within this system we have what can be compared to Hibernate's interceptors (we call it triggers): Do specific actions just before saving data in the database, after it's deleted and so on. The underlying database is MySQL. Now we would like to use tools such as Pentaho Data Integration or Talend to convert data to put it into our system. It's no problem to do that directly on the SQL level, but by doing so we loose the built-in power of our triggers. Is there a way to somehow integrate any of the Data Integration solutions into our existing application? It would be great if there was a way to write into instances of our classes instead of writing into the database directly. Any hints welcome :-)

• problem using base64 encoder and InputStreamReader

  I have some CLOB columns in a database that I need to put Base64 encoded binary files in. These files can be large, so I need to stream them, I can't read the whole thing in at once. I'm using org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64InputStream to do the encoding, and I'm running into a problem. My code is essentially this FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(file); Base64InputStream b64is = new Base64InputStream(fis, true, -1, null); InputStreamReader reader = new InputStreamReader(b64is); preparedStatement.setCharacterStream(1, reader); When I run the above code, I get one of these during the execution of the update java.io.IOException: Underlying input stream returned zero bytes, it is thrown deep in the InputStreamReader code. Why would this not work? It seems to me like the reader would attempt to read from the base 64 stream, which would read from the file stream, and everything should be happy.

• How do I properly handle a faulted WCF connection?

  In my client program, there is a WCF connection that is opened at startup and supposedly stays connected til shutdown. However, there is a chance that the server closes due to unforeseeable circumstances (imagine someone pulling the cable). Since the client uses a lot of contract methods in a lot of places, I don't want to add a try/catch on every method call. I've got 2 ideas for handling this issue: Create a method that takes a delegate and executes the delegate inside a try/catch and returns an Exception in case of a known exception, or null else. The caller has to deal with nun-null results. Listen to the Faulted event of the underlying CommunicationObject. But I don't see how I could handle the event except for displaying some error message and shutting down. Are there some best practices for faulted WCF connection that exist for app lifetime?

• How can I get my Web API app to run again after upgrading to MVC 5 and Web API 2?

  I upgraded my Web API app to the funkelnagelneu versions using this guidance: http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2 However, after going through the steps (it seems all this should be automated, anyway), I tried to run it and got, "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" What in Sam Hills Brothers Coffee is going on here? Who said this was a class library? So I opened Project Properties, and changed it (it was marked as "Class Library" for some reason - it either wasn't yesterday, or was and worked fine) to an Output Type of "Windows Application" ("Console Application" and "Class Library" being the only other options). Now it won't compile, complaining: "*Program 'c:\Platypus_Server_WebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\obj\Debug\PlatypusServerWebAPI.exe' does not contain a static 'Main' method suitable for an entry point...*" How can I get my Web API app back up and running in view of this quandary? UPDATE Looking in packages.config, two entries seem chin-scratch-worthy: <package id="Microsoft.AspNet.Providers" version="1.2" targetFramework="net40" /> <package id="Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure" version="1.0.0.0" targetFramework="net40" /> All the others target net451. Could this be the problem? Should I remove these packages? UPDATE 2 I tried to uninstall the Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure package (its description leads me to believe I don't need it; also, it has no dependencies) via the NuGet package manager, but it tells me, "NuGet failed to install or uninstall the selected package in the following project(s). [mine]" UPDATE 3 I went through the steps in again, and found that I had missed one step. I had to change this entry in the Application web.config File : <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity name="System.Web.Mvc" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" /> <bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0-5.0.0.0" newVersion="5.0.0.0" /> </dependentAssembly> (from "4.0.0.0" to "5.0.0.0") ...but I still get the same result - it rebuilds/compiles, but won't run, with "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" UPDATE 4 Thinking about the err msg, that it can't directly open a class library, I thought, "Sure you can't/won't -- this is a web app, not a project. So I followed a hunch, closed the project, and reopened it as a website (instead of reopening a project). That has gotten me further, at least; now I see a YSOD: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. UPDATE 5 Note: The project is now (after being opened as a web site) named "localhost_48614" And...there is no longer a "References" folder...?!?!? As to that YSOD I'm getting, the official instructions (http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2) said to do this, and I quote: "Update all elements that contain “System.Web.WebPages.Razor” from version “2.0.0.0” to version“3.0.0.0”." UPDATE 6 When I select Tools Library Package Manager Manage NuGet Packages for Solution now, I get, "Operation failed. Unable to locate the solution directory. Please ensure that the solution has been saved." So I save it, and it saves it with this funky new name (C:\Users\clay\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\localhost_48614\localhost_48614.sln) I get the Yellow Strip of Enlightenment across the top of the NuGet Package Manager telling me, "Some NuGet packages are missing from this solution. Click to restore from your online package sources." I do (click the "Restore" button, that is), and it downloads the missing packages ... I end up with the 30 packages. I try to run the app/site again, and ... the erstwhile YSOD becomes a compilation error: The pre-application start initialization method Start on type System.Web.Mvc.PreApplicationStartCode threw an exception with the following error message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.. Argghhhh!!! (and it's not even talk-like-a-pirate day).

  Hi, I've been using C# for a while and began a program now to learn WPF-which means I know almost nothing of it. I used this tutorial as a guide to do what I wanted to do (which is binding a database to a datagrid), after a hard struggle to add the adapter as the source of the datagrid I now want to enable editing with validation on some of the cells. My problem is that the data is sent straight from the adapter and not through an object collection (I had a hard time getting to this situation, see the first half of the tutorial on how to bind the adapter and dataset through the resources) but the tutorial doesn't show a way to validate the datagrid if the data is sent through an adapter-only through a collection. To make it clear-how do I validate input in a datagrid that is bound to an adapter through a resource? I suspect this is due to the createContextualFragment method returning a XPCNativeWrapper object, but how do I work around this to access the underlying DOM? Thanks

  I've got a bit of a problem. I have a Kohana application that has dynamically added fields. The fields that are added are called DISA numbers. In the model I look these up and the result is returned as an array. I encode the array into a JSON string and use JQuery to populate them The View knows the length of the array and so creates as many DISA elements as required before display. See the code below for a summary of how that works. What I'm finding is that this is starting to get difficult to manage. The code is becoming messy. Error handling of this type of dynamic content is ending up being spread all over the place. Not only that, it doesn't work how I want. What you see here is just a small snippet of code. For error handling I am using the validation library. I started by using add_rules on all the fields that come back in the post. As they are always phone numbers I set a required rule (when it's there) and a digit rule on the validation-as_array() keys. That works. The difficulty is actually giving it back to the view. i.e. dynamically added javascript field. Submits back to form. Save contents into a session. View has to load up fields from database + those from the previous post and signal the fields that have problems. It's all quite messy and I'm getting this code spread through both the view the controller and the model. So my question is. Have you done this before in Kohana and how have you handled it? There must be an easier way right?   We have a web part on which we display some data in a grid. We are exporting grid's underlying datatable to Excel and displaying Open - Save - Cancel dialouge box on click of a server side button. I Want to save all changes to my file and I want to release all source. I want to all of them in my destructor. But In my destructor, Excel.ApplicationClass, Workbook and Worksheet objects are fill by an Exception which have message "COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used." So I can't save nothing, close nothing because i can't access workbook or worksheet object. Can't I access the class private members in Destructor?

  I see that with SQL Server 2005 you can pass a parameter as numeric e.g. create procedure dbo.TestSP @Param1 numeric as But what does this equate to? E.g. Numeric(10,0), Numeric(9,2), etc? We have some Developers here who are using this instead of the correct definition for the field that this parameter is going to be used against e.g. instead of using Numeric(10, 0) for the parameter @Param1. Also are there any underlying performance issues with using Numeric instead of the data type defined against the field in the table? Many thanks.

• Google Drive Update keeps throwing an error when I try to save a thumbnail

  The Base64 string checks out fine. I was able to export it to another website and download it again as my image. When I try to do an update using the Drive Javascript api, it just keeps returning this error: Invalidvaluefor:Notavalidbase64bytestring I also true making the string URL safe.   I have a very basic doubt in SSL HandShake. Assume that we have a server S which uses self signed certificates. I write a Java client C which connects to the S. When C connects to S, C gets certificates from S and saves them to its truststore and the remaining part of the communication proceeds. After some time I use the same C to connect to the S, so will S send the certificates again to C, or C will use the certificates already stored in truststore. I am not good in SSL and underlying implementation of Truststore functionality in Java. Will S send the certificates to C invariable of whether the C has certificates on its truststore?? I believe that if I have certificates in truststore C trusts S and C will not ask for certificates when I connect again?? Is my assumption right?? Is the process same for self-signed certificates and CA certificates?? Thanks in advance.

  Is it possible to perform a global reversed-find on NHibernate-managed objects? Specifically, I have a persistent class called "Io". There are a huge number of fields across multiple tables which can potentially contain an object of that type. Is there a way (given a specific instance of an Io object), to retrieve a list of objects (of any type) that actually do reference that specific object? (Bonus points if it can identify which specific fields actually contain the reference, but that's not critical.) Since the NHibernate mappings define all the links (and the underlying database has corresponding foreign key links), there ought to be some way to do it.

  I have a class that wraps List< I have GetValue by index method: public RenderedImageInfo GetValue(int index) { list[index].LastRetrieved = DateTime.Now; return list[index]; } If the user requests an index that is out of range, this will throw an ArgumentOutOfRangeException . Should I just let this happen or check for it and throw my own? i.e. public RenderedImageInfo GetValue(int index) { if (index >= list.Count) { throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException("index"); } list[index].LastRetrieved = DateTime.Now; return list[index]; } In the first scenario, the user would have an exception from the internal list, which breaks mt OOP goal of the user not needing to know about the underlying objects. But in the second scenario, I feel as though I am adding redundant code. Edit: And now that I think of it, what about a 3rd scenario, where I catch the internal exception, modify it, and rethrow it?
