• Error upgrading Ubuntu server from Intrepid to Jaunty

  I'm trying to upgrade an old ubuntu server from 8.10 (Intrepid) to 9.04 (Jaunty). But it fails. root@server1:/# do-release-upgrade Checking for a new ubuntu release Failed Upgrade tool signature Failed Upgrade tool Done downloading extracting 'jaunty.tar.gz' Failed to extract Extracting the upgrade failed. There may be a problem with the network or with the server. Does anyone have an idea why I get this error and how to fix it? UPDATE: I think i might have tracked the problem down. • What do I need to consider when buying hardware to meet my needs?

  I'm looking to build a new computer from the ground up. I'm not sure what to look out for and need guidance and help on how to pick the hardware needed to construct my new rig. How do I know what to buy? How do I find out if a given CPU will be enough for a certain game or application that I want to run? How do I find out if a given graphics card will be enough for a certain game or application? What is important when looking at motherboards? How much memory do I need? How do I know how much wattage I need for a power supply? What size case do I need? What relevant standards do I need to read up on and be aware of? PCI, PCIe, SATA, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, etc... What "gotchas" do I need to be on the lookout for? Please keep responses generation-agnostic to ensure they will be helpful to our future users. While Stack Exchange does not permit shopping recommendations, it doesn't provide any general advice to consider when buying hardware. So, instead of just telling those that ask what to buy that it's not allowed, let's tell them how to figure out what they need. • Internet very slow when upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10

  I was running Ubuntu 8.x on my desktop and everything worked fine. Im using wired internet and it worked perfectly, pages loaded pretty fast. However, when I decided to upgrade to 9.10 the upgrade failed at some point, however I was left with what appeared to be Ubuntu 9.10. Since then the internet has been weird. When I go to a website it takes at least 10 seconds for the page to display, however if Im on a site and navigate to other pages on the website it loads quickly. This never happened prior to the upgrade. I thought this may be due to the upgrade not installing correctly so I did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 but the problems are still the same. Im writing this on a Vista machine over the wireless network and internet is fine. Does anyone have any ideas of the issue? Thanks.

  Karmic only has mumble 1.1.8, but if I want to connect to a 1.2 server I need to upgrade... So I would like to know how I can upgrade to mumble 1.2.2 without messing myself up for later when I upgrade to 10.04 and beyond... I just want a smooth transition into the next versions of mumble. Is there anyway to upgrade to this newer version and either keep it in the package manager or make it not interfere with the natural upgrades the program will later recieve from the package manager? • Windows 7 Professional N needs to be just Windows 7 Professional.

  I have a laptop at work that originally had Windows 7 Home Premium on it. We have a tech that comes in a few times a week to do some of our support work, and we asked him to upgrade the laptop to Windows 7 Professional. Before he left he told us the upgrade didn't work and that we'd have to order a disk. Upon checking the computer it seemed he had upgraded to Windows Professional 7 N. It had not previously been Home Premium N, so I'm not exactly sure how he managed to upgrade it to an N edition. I do not understand why he didn't run the Any Time Upgrade, but that is now irrelevant. How can I change Professional N to regular Professional? I would like to avoid having to restore it back to Home if possible.

• PDAnet on Android IP on PC is not public IP. Where does the NAT take place, PDAnet or Verizon?

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

• Windows 7 loses correct time zone upon reboot

  I have a standard PC running Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit). For some reason, it refuses to keep the correct time zone (the BIOS battery is OK) when restarted. Note (1): The Time zone is correct. The "Internet Time" tab also shows "this computer is set to automatically synchronize with 'time.windows.com'. When I click the 'Change settings...' button, the 'Synchronize with an Internet time server' checkbox is checked. Still, upon reboot, the time is skewed by 6 hours... and doesn't correct itself even after waiting hours for this "automatically synchronize" to occur. Note (2): The BIOS time is set to local (i.e. not UTC). When I restart Windows 7 without booting to the other OS installed in dual-boot config (Ubuntu Linux), it seems to correctly remember the time. This may explain immediate time upon reboot, but it doesn't explain why Windows 7 won't automatically 'Synchronize with an Internet time server' even after an hour. Why is this happening and how do I correct this?

• Session Variables lost between pages reloads

  I was forced to move to IIS 7 when the server running our IIS 6 died. Nothing in the web app has changed, but it's obvious the environment has dramatically. The app fails between pages because the session variables are lost during redirect. I am not an expert on app pools but my impression from reading several posts is that the app pool is being recycled immediately. While they give a reason, they offer no help in how to resolve this. Can someone explain to a newb how to properly configure the DefaultAppPool?

• Why can't I install Ubuntu 10.04 on a system that already has Ubuntu 8.04?

  Ubuntu 10.04 is beautiful. I love it. I am dying to install it on my PC, alongside the existing Ubuntu 8.04 (from which I write this message right now). But... it won't let me! When I reach the partitioning stage (manual!) Ubuntu 10.04 sees my two HDDs as one RAID volume. It doesn't see all the partitions I already have in place in /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Even Windows 7 doesn't behave like this... (yes, I actually managed to install Windows 7 64-bit in dual-boot configuration with Ubuntu 8.04 on this same system). Note: GParted on Ubuntu 10.04 (live CD) sees the partition intended for Ubuntu 10.04 (/dev/sda4) perfectly, but is unable to format it. Any idea how to solve this problem?

• Access a samba mount from an ssh connection

  I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer. I have made a samba mount to a windows computer. This works fine when I am on the Ubuntu computer directly. When I go to another computer and connect to Ubuntu with SSH. I can connect fine and everything works but the folder my mount is in appears empty. I have only 1 account and it has permissions on the file etc. When on the computer directly it all works perfectly, it is only when connecting with SSH that isn't visible. What am I doing wrong here? I made the mount with smbmount //computer/folder mount -o username=username,password=password Even if I run this command on the SSH connection then it is the same, visible on the computer directly but not on SSH.

• Computer won't stay powered up

  I have just tried to turn my PC on this morning and it won't stay powered up. It will come on as normal for about 5 seconds, not quite long enough for the monitor to wake up. Then it will power off. After about 2 seconds it will start again, it will continue like this until I pull out the plug. Plugging it in again doesn't restart the cycle although pressing the power button does. I have tried to clear the cmos but beyond that I have no ideas. It was working perfectly when I put it in hibernate last night.

• Google document does not print correctly on Mac 10.7.5 using Chrome

  When attempting to print a Google document, the header does not get printed at all and the text starts almost in the center of the page - cutting off almost half of the text in the printable area horizontally. The vertical alignment appears fine, with the exception of hte missing header. I have searched the product forums at Google, but they are virtually unusable. Endless threads without a solution! For reference, the document prints fine from Windows XP using Chrome. I can also print from other applications on the Mac without issue - so I am thinking it's a Google doc issue at this point.

• How can I recover data after mistakenly clean-installed 12.04 over 11.10?

  I recently got a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS i386 DVD Rom and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alternate cd from the zyxware.com because I don't have a broadband personal connection at home, I am using only the office INTERNET. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop core 2 duo Processor with 2GB Ram dual boot of Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows Vista. I tried to upgrade My existing fully equipped streamlined Ubuntu 11.10 OS with lot of documents and socialized application packages which have been frequently used by me for the last one year. First I tried to install upgradation from the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alternate cd while ubuntu 11.10 is on, but every time I got a error message and I couldn't upgrade either thro desktop or through terminal. Then I tried Ubuntu 12.04 LTS i386 DVD the boot option to DVD, I tried to upgrade from existing 11.10 to 12.04 LTS Option, then Upgrading Installation started well and finally got a message Installation completed successfully, Asked for reboot, I rebooted then I have hot a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Login and I logged on, I have got a big shock that there is everything washed away in the home folders ( all datas, Music collections and vedios etc), all the application installed early in 11.10 were gone nothing left. Now I have got only 12.04 LTS, even It is asking for me to update around 350 mb through net connection. How It was a crazy Ubuntu, It is not a up-gradation, new installation is not it? I loosed everthing, at the end I got the same desktop screen like Ubuntu 11.10. Anybody knows about what gone wrong and if any possibility to recover my datas? Please help me. I want to Know that which method is stable to Upgrade existing Ubunt11.10

  I've never really understood the custom of stuffing a summary of one's family's activities for the year in a Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa card.  It seems a little self-congratulatory and impersonal.  I'd rather my friends kept authentically in touch throughout the year, but perhaps that's just me.Nonetheless, I see the value of a year-end summary in the IT industry.  I spend a lot of time helping our customers understand the latest new developments... and straightening out confusion over changes to the old and familiar.  It can be hard to keep up with the latest news in this space.Here are the eight most-important news items for 2010, with suggested actions for Apps DBAs:Premier Support for EBS 11.5.10 ended on November 30, 2010You need to be on a minimum baseline of 11.5.10 patches to be eligible for Extended Support.  New patches for EBS 11i released during the Extended Support period will be produced only for the minimum baseline configuration.Action: Ensure that your EBS 11i environments meet the minimum baseline requirements. Minimum Baselines are Emerging for EBS 12.0 Extended SupportExtended Support for EBS 12.0 begins on February 1, 2012.  That's only 13 months away.  Minimum baselines haven't been finalized yet, but the 12.0.6 Release Update Pack and the Financials CPC July 2009 are currently slated.  Action: Ensure that your EBS 12.0 environments meet the currently-specified baseline requirements. Sun, Windows, and Linux users should have upgraded to JDK 6 by nowJDK 5's End of Service Life was October 30, 2009 for those three platforms.  If you're running the E-Business Suite on Sun, Windows, or Linux, you should upgrade your EBS servers to JDK 6.  Alternatively, you can purchase Java for Business support (the equivalent of Extended Support for Java).   In Ubuntu 13.04, the Software Updater shows some apps as having updates, but they're non-selectable: It's not clear why they're greyed out. Done The following packages have been kept back: gnuplot-nox gnuplot-x11 nvidia-current 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded. Note too that running apt-get dist-upgrade does not cause them to be installed either, as it sometimes does with packages that are kept back. • Alert for Forms customers running Oracle Forms 10g

  Doesn’t time fly!  While you might have been happily running your Forms 10g applications for about 5 years or so now, the end of premier support is creeping up and you need to start planning for a move to Oracle Forms 11g. The premier support end date in December 31st 2011 and this is documented in Note: 1290974.1 available from MOS. So how much of an impact is this going to be?  Maybe not as much as you think.  While Forms 11g is based on WebLogic Server (WLS),10g was based  on OC4J.  That in itself doesn’t impact Forms much.  In most case it will simply be a recompile of your Forms source files and redeploy on WLS 11g. The Forms builder is the same in 11g as in 10g although its currently not available as a separate download from the main middleware bundle.  You can also look at a WLS Basic license option which means you shouldn’t have to shell out on upgrading to a WLS Suite license option. So what’s the proof in this being a relatively straightforward upgrade?  Well, we’ve had a big uptake of Forms 11g already (which has itself been out for over 2 years).  Read about BT Expedite’s upgrade where “The upgrade of Forms from Oracle Forms 10g to Oracle Forms 11g was relatively simple and on the whole, was just a recompilation”.  Or AMEC where “This has been one of the easiest Forms conversions we’ve ever done and it was a simple recompile in all cases” So if you are on 10g (or even earlier versions) I’d strongly consider starting your planning for an upgrade to 11g now. • Fix a jQuery/HTML5 dynamic content issue by upgrading jQuery

  The default NuGet template for MVC3 pushes down jQuery 1.5.1.  You can upgrade to a new version (1.7.1 is current when this is written) to avoid a problem with the creation of “unknown” HTML5 tags in IE6-8: Take this sample HTML page using HTML5Shiv to provide support for new HTML5 tags in IE6 – IE8.  The page has a number of <article> tags that are backwards compatible in Internet Explorer 6-8 thanks to the HTML5Shiv. After the article elements there is a jQuery 1.5.1 script tag, and a ready() event handler that appends a footer element with a copyright to each of the article tags.  This appears correctly in IE9, but in older IE browsers the unknown tag problem reappears for the dynamic <footer> elements, even though we have the HTML5Shiv at the top of the page.  The copyright text sits outside of the two separate footer tags. To solve the issue upgrade your jQuery files to an up-to-date version.  For instance in Visual Studio 2010: In the Solution Explorer right click on References and choose Manage NuGet Packages. In the Manage NuGet Packages window select the jQuery item on the middle of the page and click the “Upgrade” button. You may need to upgrade your script src references to point at the new version. Using the updated jQuery library the incorrect tags should disappear and styles should work properly:   You can find more information about the issue on the jQuery Bug Tracker site.
