If you haven’t seen the course, there’s a preview here on YouTube: In-Process and Out-of-Process Caches, which gives a good flavour. The library is a wrapper around various cache providers, including the .NET MemoryCache, AppFabric cache, and  memcached*. All the wrappers inherit from a base class which gives you a set of common functionality against all the cache implementations: •    inherits OutputCacheProvider, so you can use your chosen cache provider as an ASP.NET output cache; •    serialization and encryption, so you can configure whether you want your cache items serialized (XML, JSON or binary) and encrypted; •    instrumentation, you can optionally use performance counters to monitor cache attempts and hits, at a low level. • Accessing JMX for Oracle WebLogic 11g

  In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4, we use the latest Oracle WebLogic release (11g). The instructions below illustrate a way of allowing a console like jconsole to remotely monitor and manage Oracle WebLogic using the JMX Mbeans. Typically management of Oracle WebLogic is done from Oracle Enterprise Manager or the Oracle Weblogic console application but you can also use JMX. To access the JMX capability for Oracle WebLogic 11g, for an Oracle Utilities Application Framework based product, using a JMX console (such as jconsole) the following process needs to be performed: Enable the JMX Management Server in the Oracle WebLogic console at splapp - Configuration - General - Advanced Settings option. Enable both Compatibility Mbean Server Enabled and Management EJB Enabled (this enables the legacy and new JMX interface). Save the changes This change will require a restart. In the startup of the Oracle WebLogic server in the $SPLSYSTEMLOGS/myserver.log (or %SPLESYSTEMLOGS%\myserver.log on Windows) you will see the BEA-149512 message indicating the Mbean servers have been started. The message will indicate the JMX URL that can be used to access the JMX Mbeans. The URL is in the format: service:jmx:iiop://host:port/jndi/mbeanserver where: host - Oracle WebLogic host name port - Oracle WebLogic port number mbeanserver - Mbean Server to access. Valid Values: weblogic.management.mbeanservers.runtime weblogic.management.mbeanservers.edit weblogic.management.mbeanservers.domainruntime For illustrative purposes we will use the domainruntime Mbean. Ensure that you execute the splenviron[.sh] utility to set the appropriate environment variables for the desired environment. Execute the following jconsole command to initiate the connection to the JMX Mbean server Windows: jconsole -J-Djava.class.path=%JAVA_HOME%\lib\jconsole.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\wljmxclient.jar -J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=weblogic.management.remote Linux/Unix jconsole -J-Djava.class.path=$JAVA_HOME/lib/jconsole.jar;$WL_HOME/server/lib/wljmxclient.jar -J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=weblogic.management.remote You will see a New Connection Dialog. Specify the URL from the previous steps into the Remote process (i.,e. service:jmx:iiop...). The credentials are the credentials specified for the Oracle WebLogic console. • Access Windows Home Server from an Ubuntu Computer on your Network

  If you’re a Windows Home Server user, there may be times when you need to access it from an Ubuntu machine on your network. Today we take a look at the process of accessing files on your home server from Ubuntu. Note: In this example we’re using Windows Home Server with PowerPack 3, and Ubuntu 10.04 running on a home network. Access WHS from Ubuntu To access files on your home server from Ubuntu, click on Places then select Network. You should now see your home server listed in the Network folder as well as other Windows machines…double-click the server to access it. If you don’t see your server listed, you might need to go into Windows Network \ Workgroup and find it there. You’ll be prompted to enter in the correct credentials for WHS just as you would when accessing it from a Windows machine. It’s your choice if you want to have the password remembered or not…make your selection and click Connect. Now you will see the available folders on your home server. In this example we signed in with Administrator credentials, so we have access to everything. Double-click on the folder share you want to access content from…here we see MS Office documents on the server. Or, here we take a look at a music folder with various MP3 files which you can make Ubuntu play. You can access the files directly from the server, provided there is a Linux app that can handle the file type. In this example we opened a Word document in OpenOffice. Here we’re playing an MKV movie file from the server in Totem Movie Player.   You can easily search for files on the server as well… If you want to store your Ubuntu files on WHS it’s just a matter of dragging them to the correct WHS folder you want them in. If you’re using an Ubuntu computer on your home network and need to access files from Windows Home Server, luckily it’s a straight-forward process. You’ll often have to find the correct software to use Windows files, but even that’s getting much easier with version 10.04. • Windows Azure Use Case: Fast Acquisitions

  This is one in a series of posts on when and where to use a distributed architecture design in your organization's computing needs. In these cases, one of the most difficult parts of the process is the merging or changing of the IT systems that the employees use to do their work, process payments, and even get paid. Normally this means that the two companies have disparate systems, and several approaches can be used to have the two organizations use technology between them. An organization may choose to retain both systems, and manage them separately. The advantage here is speed, and keeping the profit/loss sheets separate. Another choice is to slowly “sunset” or stop using one organization’s system, and cutting to the other system immediately or at a later date. Although a popular choice, one of the most difficult methods is to extract data and processes from one system and import it into the other. Employees at the transitioning system have to be trained on the new one, the data must be examined and cleansed, and there is inevitable disruption when this happens. Still another option is to integrate the systems. This may prove to be as much work as a transitional strategy, but may have less impact on the users or the balance sheet. Implementation: A distributed computing paradigm can be a good strategic solution to most of these strategies. Retaining both systems is made more simple by allowing the users at the second organization immediate access to the new system, because security accounts can be created quickly inside an application. There is no need to set up a VPN or any other connections than just to the Internet. Having the users stop using one system and start with the other is also simple in Windows Azure for the same reason. Extracting data to Azure holds the same limitations as an on-premise system, and may even be more problematic because of the large data transfers that might be required. In a distributed environment, you pay for the data transfer, so a mixed migration strategy is not recommended. However, if the data is slowly migrated over time with a defined cutover, this can be an effective strategy. If done properly, an integration strategy works very well for a distributed computing environment like Windows Azure. If the Azure code is architected as a series of services, then endpoints can expose the service into and out of not only the Azure platform, but internally as well.   I've been trying to find some decent tutorials on how to set up a recent release of Cherokee webserver on Ubuntu (or equivalent Linux distros) which outline how to setup the webserver, mysql, phpmyadmin and php. Some already exist, such as http://www.howtoforge.com/installing-cherokee-with-php5-and-mysql-support-on-ubuntu-10.04 however, I've found that the Cherokee version used in the tutorial is considerably out of date and the update process has been painful to say the least. Thanks.

  I have a growing music collection which I manually keep in sync with an external USB drive. Sometimes I edit their ID3 tags, add or delete a file in either the hard drive or the USB drive, and I would like to keep those changes synchronized between both. Does Ubuntu has something available that would help me with this scenario? Preferably something easy to use with a UI. Update: To clarify my question, changes may happen on both the local hard drive or the USB drive, so the sync process must be on both directions.

  To understand the challenges when working with Customizations better, please allow me to explain my understanding from the Customization Lifecycle.  The starting point is the functional GAP list. Any GAP can lead to a customization (but not have to). The decision is driven by priority, gain, costs, future functionality, accepted workarounds etc. Let's assume the customization has been accepted as such - including estimation. (Otherwise this blog would not have any value)Now the customization life-cycle starts and could look like this:-    Functional specification-    Technical specification-    Technical development-    Functional setup-    Module Test-    System Test-    Integration Test (if required)-    Acceptance Test-    Production mode-    Usage-    10 x Rework-    10 x Retest -    2 x Upgrade-    2 x Upgrade Test-    Usage-    10 x Rework-    10 x Retest -    1 x Upgrade-    1 x Upgrade Test-    Usage-    Review for Retirement-    Accepted Retirement-    De-installationWhat I like to highlight herewith is that any material and documentation you create upfront or during the first phases will usually be used multiple times, partial or complete, will be enhanced, reviewed, retested. The better the quality right from the beginning is, the better we can perform the next steps.What I see very often is the wish to remove a customization, our customers are upgrading and they like to get at least some of the customizations replaced with standard functionality. To be able to support this process best, the customization documentation should contain at least the following key information: What is/are the business process(es) where this customization is used or linked to?Who was involved in the different customization phases?What are the objects comprising the customization?What is the setup necessary for the customization?What setup comes with the customization, what has to be done via other tools or manually?What are the test steps and test results (in all test areas)?What are linked customizations? What is the customization complexity?How is this customization classified?Which technologies were used?How many days were needed to create/test/upgrade the customization?Etc.If all this is available, a replacement / retirement can be done much more efficient and precise, or an estimation and upgrade itself can be executed with much better support.In the following blog entries I will explain in more detail why we suggest tracking such information, by whom this task shall be done and how.Volker Eckardt
