  Hi, I just built a asp.net 2.0 web site. Now I need add REST web service so I can communicate with another web application. I've worked with 2 SOAP web service project before, but have no experise with REST at all. I guess only a coupleweeks would works fine. after googling, I found it's not that easy. This is what I found: There is NO REST out of box of asp.net. WCF REST Starter Kit Codeplex Preview 2 base on .net 3.5 and still in beta Rest ASP.NET Example REST Web Services in ASP.NET 2.0 (C#) Exyus Handling POST and PUT methods with Lullaby ADO.NET Data Service ... Now my question, a) Is a REST solution for .net 2.0? if yes, which one is best solution? b) if I have to, how hard to migrate my asp.net from 2.0 to 3.5? is it as simple as just compile, or I have to change a lot code? c) WCF REST Starter Kit is good enough to use in production? d) Do I have to learn WCF first, then WCF REST Starter Kit? where is the best place to start? • Ideas Needed for a Base Code System

  I've developed a PHP web application that is currently in need of a strategic restructuring. Currently when we setup new clients we give them the entire code base on a subdomain of our main domain and create a new table for them in the database. This results in each client having the entire codebase, meaning when we make bug changes, fixes we have to go back and apply them independently across all clients and this is a pain. What I'd like to create is a base code server that holds all the core PHP files. base.domain.com Then all of our clients (client.domain.com) will only need a few files: config.php would have the database connection information. index.php - displays the login box if session non-existant, otherwise it loads baseline code via remote includes to base.domain.com. My question is does my logic seem feasible? How do other people handle similar situations by having a base code? Also.... Is it even possbile to remotely include PHP files from base.domain.com and include them in client.domain.com? Thanks, Tegan

• VS2010 error: Unable to start debugging on the web server

  I get error message "Unable to start debugging on the web server" in Visual Studio 2010. I clicked the Help button and followed the related suggestions without success. This happens with a newly created local ASP.Net project when modified to use IIS instead of Cassini (which works for debugging). It prompts to set debug="true" in the web.config and then immediately pops up the error. Nothing shows up in the Event Viewer. I am able to attach to w3wp to debug. It works but is not as convenient as F5. I also have a similar problem with VS2008 on the same PC. Debugging used to work for both. I have re-registered Framework 4 (aspnet_regiis -i). I ran the VS2010 repair (this is the RTM version). I am running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box. I do have Resharper V5 installed. There must be some configuration setting or registry value that survives the repair causing the problem. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks, Gary Davis ([email protected])

• What is the fastest way for reading huge files in Delphi?

  My program needs to read chunks from a huge binary file with random access. I have got a list of offsets and lengths which may have several thousand entries. The user selects an entry and the program seeks to the offset and reads length bytes. The program internally uses a TMemoryStream to store and process the chunks read from the file. Reading the data is done via a TFileStream like this: FileStream.Position := Offset; MemoryStream.CopyFrom(FileStream, Size); This works fine but unfortunately it becomes increasingly slower as the files get larger. The file size starts at a few megabytes but frequently reaches several tens of gigabytes. The chunks read are around 100 kbytes in size. The file's content is only read by my program. It is the only program accessing the file at the time. Also the files are stored locally so this is not a network issue. I am using Delphi 2007 on a Windows XP box. What can I do to speed up this file access?

  Hi All, Big picture: I want to render an RGB image via GTK on a linux box. I'm a frustrated GTK newbie, so please forgive me. I assume that I should create a Drawable_area in which to render the image -- correct? Do I then have to create a graphics context attached to that area? • Rails and SWFUpload: Sporadic Failure on Upload and Response Issue

  I've got SWFUpload version 2.5 beta 3 attached to my Rails 2.3.2 application and it works great 75% of the time. The other 25%, I get types of failure. The first failure is a failure to upload. The activity starts, but never actually sends the file to the servers. In my JS, when setting breakpoints, it stops between setting the post params and starting the upload (last two lines below): var params = { "authenticity_token": authToken, "photo[name]": $("#photo_name").val(), "photo[description]": $("#photo_description").val(), "photo[post_id]": $("#post_id").val() }; params[keyName] = key; swfu.setPostParams(params); swfu.startUpload(); It just occurred to me that the file might not being queued, but I've got a handler attached to show the file name in a text box and that works consistently. The second issue is this: Sometimes the response string is truncated. I'm rendering a partial in Rails without a layout to show the uploaded file data in my layout. Most of the time this partial comes through fine, but sometimes it comes through as only the first line, or only parts of the first several lines. The variables seem to be coming through into the view just fine. Any ideas? Thanks!

I suspected that the problem is due to Node.js update (Opa = 1.1.1 requires Node 0.10.* - now I am using 0.10.12, but I also tried other 0.10-s), but "Hello world" from the Node's from page works fine. I am running the app on OSX developer box and Linux Debian 7.0 server. Any suggestions what am I doing wrong? PS. I was off the business for a while. Anyone knows what happened to the Opa forum? Signing is seams not to work.

• Is it possible to guarantee a unique id for multiple items using the same id variable at a point in

  First of all, do not be overwhelmed by the long code, I just put it for reference...I have a function that preg_replaces content and puts it in a jquery dialog box with a matching open-link. For example, if there is a paragraph with two matches, they will be put inside two divs, and a jquery dialog function will be echoed twice; one for each div. While this works for one match, if there are multiple matches, it does not. I am not sure how to distribute unique ids at a point in time for each of the divs and matching dialog open-scripts. Keep in mind, I removed the preg replace function since it kind of complicates the problem.   I have created a custom PhpBB3 style and desperately since a few hours tried to add a background image to a specific comment text area. With firebug I checked if the comment text area had a class and it does, so I tried some css variations and finally tried: sn-inputComment { background: url("{T_THEME_PATH}/images/pencil.png") repeat-x left top #FFFFFF;} { I also tried to find and manipulate the php generated text area but no success. • How can I intelligently group rows of integers for a faceted search?

  I'm not even quite sure what terms I should be using for what I want, so any advice on what I'm even asking for would be very welcome. Basically, my web site lists user-generated accommodations. Each has a rent price, which users will be able to query in our new faceted search box. Users search by city, and within each city I'd like to present a different rent grouping. That is to say that in City #1, if we have listings ranging from $200 - $1000, I'd like to present checkboxes for: less than $300 $301 - $500 $501 - $700 more than $700 However, if City #2 has values that range from $500 - $1500, I want the ranges above to change accordingly. So, if I say that I want 5 or 6 range options in each city, I think I have two options: Take the min and max values and just split the difference. I don't like this idea because one listing with a rent of $10,000 will throw the whole scale off. Intelligently calculate the ranges using means, medians etc. Number 2 is what I need help with. I'm a web developer that gets logic, but was never strong on math and statistics at school. Can anyone point me towards a guide that'll help me figure this out?

• Circular Reference exception with JSON Serialisation with MVC3 and EF4 CTP5w

  Hi I'm having problems with a circular reference when i try and serialise an object returned via EF4 CTP5. Im using the code first approach and simple poco's for my model. I have added [ScriptIgnore] attributes to any properties that provide a back references to an object and annoyingly every seems to work fine if i manually instantiate the poco's, i.e. they serialise to JSON fine, and the scriptignore attribute is acknowledged. However when i try and serialise an object returned from the DAL i get the circular reference exception "A circular reference was detected while serializing an object of type 'System.Data.Entity.DynamicProxies.xxxx'" I have tried several ways of retreiving the data but they all get stuck with this error: public JsonResult GetTimeSlot(int id) { TimeSlotDao tsDao = new TimeSlotDao(); TimeSlot ts = tsDao.GetById(id); return Json(ts); } The method below works slightly better as rather than the timeslot dynamic proxied object causing the circular refference its the appointment object. public JsonResult GetTimeSlot(int id) { TimeSlotDao tsDao = new TimeSlotDao(); var ts = from t in tsDao.GetQueryable() where t.Id == id select new {t.Id, t.StartTime, t.Available, t.Appointment}; return Json(ts); } Any ideas or solutions to this problem? • [MFC] What is the reciprocal of CComboBox.GetItemData?

  Instead of associating objects with Combo Box items, I associate long ids representing choices. They come from a database, so it seems natural to do so anyway. Now, I persist the id and not the index of the user's selection, so that the choice is remembered across sessions. If id no longer exists in database - no big deal. The choice will be messed up once. If db does not change, however, then it would be a great success ;) Here is how I get the id : chosenSomethingIndex = cmbSomething.GetCurSel(); lastSomethingId = cmbSomething.GetItemData(chosenSomethingIndex); How do I reverse this? When I load the stored value for user's last choice, I need to convert that id into an index. I can do: cmbSomething.SetCurSel(chosenSomethingIndex); However, how can I attempt (it might not exist) to get an index once I have an id? I am looking for a reciprocal function to GetItemData I am using VS2008, probably latest version of MFC, whatever that is. Thank you.

  In CSharp its as simple as writting : listBox1.Items.Add("Hello"); listBox1.Items.Add("There"); foreach (string item in listBox1.Items ) { MessageBox.Show(item.ToString()); } and i can easily add different objects to a list box and then retrieve them using foreach. I tried the same approach in Qt 4.8.2 but it seems they are different.though they look very similar at first.I found that Qt supports foreach so i went on and tried something like : foreach(QListWidgetItem& item,ui->listWidget->items()) { item.setTextColor(QColor::blue()); } which failed clearly.It says the items() needs a parameter which confuses me.I am trying to iterate through the ListBox itself, so what does this mean? I tried passing the ListBox object as the parameter itself this again failed too: foreach(QListWidgetItem& item,ui->listWidget->items(ui->listWidget)) { item.setTextColor(QColor::blue()); } So here are my questions: How can I iterate through a QListWidget items in Qt? Can i store objects as items in QListWidgets like C#? How can i convert an object in QListWidgets to string(C#s ToString counter part in Qt) ? (suppose i want to use a QMessagBox instead of that setTextColor and want to print out all string items in the QlistWidget.)

• ASP.NET MVC 2 - How do I use DropDownListFor ?

  I have a simple model / view with things like Username, Password etc. and use helpers fine to hook it up. I now have a field called "NumberOfChildren". I want to store a number in it (int) and I want it render a dropdown box containing "None", "1", "2" etc. My thoughts would be that the model would have a list or a method that returns a list, so I can specify the values such as NumberOfChildren_List that I put the data into, and then DropDownListFor pulls that list and renders it, matching the value to the value of the item in the dropdown. However after spending about 30 minutes on trying to figure out how on earth it works, I gave up and decided to ask here. Any ideas? Edit: Here's some code... <%: Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.NumberOfChildren, new SelectList(Model.NumberOfChildrenListValues))%> and in the model [Required] [DisplayName("How many children do you have?")] public string NumberOfChildren { get; set; } public IEnumerable<string> NumberOfChildrenListValues { get { List<string> list = new List<string>() { "None", "1", "2" }; return list; } set { } } I get an object not set to instance of object error though. Ideas?

• Cannot connect to SQL Server from ASP.NET MVC app

  I have an ASP.NET MVC app that has on a hosted server for over a year, connecting to SQL Server. I've had to change hosting services, the new one supports MVC 1.0. I've also moved a non MVC ASP app to the same hosting service. Now, MY MVC based app retturnes this error when I try to validate a user login. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Now, the non-MVC app can access the exact same database and authenticate users just fine. The MVC app, when run from my dev box connects fine. It also run/connects/authenticates without problem when I install and run the site from an internal SQL 2008 server running IIS 7. I, along with the hosting support techs, am at a loss how the exact same connect string works every where except on the hosted server, and only when run from inside an ASP.NET MVC web app. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

• Safari Web Inspector is not updating when I update an element with ajax

  I have a checkout page http://www.oipolloi.com/oipolloi/shop/viewbasket.php with multiple ajax calls after certain items update (EG look up postage cost when country is changed, then update discount boxes etc). I've asked for help in the past about the best method of making sure ALL calls have returned before allowing the form to be submitted for payment processing: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2290372/how-do-i-prevent-form-submission-until-multiple-ajax-calls-have-finished-jquery I was fairly happy that the logic in the finished solution was correct, but I have still been receiving reports that people using Safari are able to submit the form without the ajax calls returning properly. I have tried using the Safari Web Inspector to debug but it seems that when you Inspect Element, then update an element with an ajax call, the Inspector doesn't seem to update. I am updating hidden fields, so it's hard to be able to know whether the problem lies with the DOM not being updated properly, or the Inspector itself. I'm using Safari 4.0.5 on PC and you can reproduce the problem above by looking for a div id="countryFieldsBilling" with Web Inspector. It should contain three hidden fields that are initially empty. You can try to make it update (or not) by choosing a country from the select menu at the bottom of 'Shipping Address' box, and then clicking the 'click to use Shipping Address' link at the top of the 'Billing Address' just below. The behaviour I am seeing is that the country chosen in the shipping select gets copied correctly to the country in the billing select, but the hidden inputs in the Web Inspector do not get updated. When these hidden inputs do not get updated, this causes the problem that Mac Safari users report. If you can let me know either how to get Web Inspector to work properly, or something else I may have missed in the behaviour of Mac Safari that may cause these problems, that would be great.   I am attempting to install Team Explorer 2008 on a Windows Server 2008 box, without success, which is why I am here. " [07/02/10,10:07:03] Setup.exe: AddGlobalCustomProperty [07/02/10,10:07:03] Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode): ERRORLOG EVENT : Component Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode) returned an unexpected value. [07/02/10,10:07:03] Setup.exe: AddGlobalCustomProperty [07/02/10,10:07:03] Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode): ERRORLOG EVENT : Return from system messaging: Incorrect function. Apparently the Team Explorer 2008 is incompatible with Windows Server 2008. If you right click on the setup.exe in the TFS Explorer ISO and run a compatibility check it fails. There is a separate installer package to install the VS2008 Shell that is compatible with Windows 2008, but it fails too. Has anyone else been able to install Team Explorer 2008 on Windows Server 2008?
