• OSB, Service Callouts and OQL

  Oracle Fusion Middleware customers use Oracle Service Bus (OSB) for virtualizing Service endpoints and implementing stateless service orchestrations. Behind the performance and speed of OSB, there are a couple of key design implementations that can affect application performance and behavior under heavy load. One of the heavily used feature in OSB is the Service Callout pipeline action for message enrichment and invoking multiple services as part of one single orchestration. Overuse of this feature, without understanding its internal implementation, can lead to serious problems. This series will delve into OSB internals, the problem associated with usage of Service Callout under high loads, diagnosing it via thread dump and heap dump analysis using tools like ThreadLogic and OQL (Object Query Language) and resolving it. The first section in the series will mainly cover the threading model used internally by OSB for implementing Route Vs. Service Callouts. The second section of the "OSB, Service Callouts and OQL" blog posting will delve into thread dump analysis of OSB server and detecting threading issues relating to Service Callout and using Heap Dump and OQL to identify the related Proxies and Business services involved. The final section of the series will focus on the corrective action to avoid Service Callout related OSB serer hangs. ADF Developer Certification goes production – you can now take the official test and get an official certification that you can include in your resume.Should be a must for any consultant looking to get ADF related gigs. ADF Vision Stencils Released – If you are looking for a quick way to draw prototypes of ADF screens you probably can’t get any faster and more accurate results than this. This is a set of Vision components that you can drag over and design a page visually. You can also set properties for components and do other advance things. You do need a license for Visio to use this, but the ADF stencils are free. We’ve been using these internally at Oracle for some time now and we thought the ADF community would enjoy these too. • Late feedback

  MySQL Community team asked me to write about Devconf 2013 few months ago. Conference was in June, 2013, but I remembered about this my promise only now: month later after my participating in MySQL Connect and Expert Troubleshooting seminar (change country to United Kingdom if you see blank page). I think it is too late for the feedback, but I still have few thoughts which I want to record.DevConf (former PHPConf) always was a place where I tried new topics. At first, because I know audience there very well and they will be bored if I repeat a story which I was telling last year, but also because it is much easier to get feedback in your own native language. But last years my habit seems started to change and I presented improved version of my 2012 MySQL Connect talk about MySQL backups. Of course, I also had a seminar with unique topic, made for this conference first time: Troubleshooting MySQL Performance with EXPLAIN and Using Performance Schema to Troubleshoot MySQL. And these topics, improved, were presented at the expert seminar. It is interesting how my habit changes and one public speaking activity interferes next one.What is good about DevConf is it forces you to create new ideas and do it really well, because audience is not forgiving at all, so they catch everything you miss or prepared not good enough. This can be bad if you want to make a marketing-style topic for free, but allows to present technical features in really good details: all these sudden discussions really help.In year 2013 Oracle had a booth at the conference and was presented by a bunch of people. Dmitry Lenev presented topic "New features of replication in MySQL 5.6" and Victoria Reznichenko worked on the booth. What was new at the conference this year is greater interest in NoSQL, scale and fast development solutions. This, unfortunately, means not so huge interest in MySQL as it was earlier. However, at the same time, "Common" track was really MySQL track: not only Oracle, but people from other companies presented about it.

  We can all probably agree that improving your customers' experience is a good thing. But a key question many people are asking is will it help your organization and, in particular, what are the financial benefits? That's a good question, especially when companies ARE experiencing phenomenal return on investment (ROI). Of course, there are many factors that impact ROI or other measures of success, but we'd like to share some success stories as examples of customer experience in action and delivering positive results. In this series of blog posts, we'll share actual customer stories. Today's example is Dell, which uses Oracle Real-Time Decisions (RTD) and Siebel CRM as part of their customer experience portfolio to better understand their customers' needs and wants and provide consistent interactions. Regular readers of this blog are probably familiar with Siebel, but RTD may be new to many of you. RTD is a complete decision management solution that delivers real-time decisions and recommendations and automatically renders decisions within a business process to create tailored messaging for every customer interaction. What does that mean? In the video below, Dell describes how customer experience is important not just for one interaction channel, but across all "vehicles." RTD is helping Dell understand customer behavior and communicate with the customer in a more relevant manner, across all communication  or interaction channels including sales and service call centers, email marketing and online. Dell continues to expand use of RTD because the benefits are showing up in sales, service and marketing results including 19% increase in close rates, faster issue resolution and 40% improvement in revenue per click in email marketing. That said, practice safe computing. 5) Consider Downloading a Ride-Sharing Service AppSideCar, Lyft, Uber and RelayRides are taking SF by storm, and are popular alternative to yellow taxis. These are unregulated ride-sharing services, so ride at your own risk. Hipster Tips for SF 1) Don't call it Frisco.2) If you wear shorts, don't complain about how cold it is.3) Bright colored clothes are for tourists. • How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • Cloning from a given point in the snapshot tree

  Although we have just released VirtualBox 4.3, this quick blog entry is about a longer standing ability of VirtualBox when it comes to Snapshots and Cloning, and was prompted by a question posed internally, here in Oracle: "Is there a way I can create a new VM from a point in my snapshot tree?". Here's the scenario: Let's say you have your favourite work VM which is Oracle Linux based and as you installed different packages, such as database, middleware, and the apps, you took snapshots at each point like this: But you then need to create a new VM for some other testing or to share with a colleague who will be using the same Linux and Database layers but may want to reconfigure the Middleware tier, and may want to install his own Apps. All you have to do is right click on the snapshot that you're happy with and clone: Give the VM that you are about to create a name, and if you plan to use it on the same host machine as the original VM, it's a good idea to "Reinitialize the MAC address" so there's no clash on the same network: Now choose the Clone type. If you plan to use this new VM on the same host as the original, you can use Linked Cloning else choose Full.  At this point you now have a choice about what to do about your snapshot tree. In our example, we're happy with the Linux and Database layers, but we may want to allow our colleague to change the upper tiers, with the option of reverting back to our known-good state, so we'll retain the snapshot data in the new VM from this point on: The cloning process then chugs along and may take a while if you chose a Full Clone: Finally, the newly cloned VM is ready with the subset of the Snapshot tree that we wanted to retain: Pretty powerful, and very useful.  Cheers, -FB

• Installation questions

  I've gotten a couple more questions about the installation process for Ops Center. "Can I install on any SPARC / X86 based platform?" Ops Center can run on Oracle Solaris on either architecture, or on Linux. The Certified Systems Matrix lists the supported OSes, and the Linux and Solaris install guides go into more detail about the hardware and OS requirements. "Can we install it on local zones or LDOMS?" Zones, yes; LDOMS, sort of. You can install the Enterprise Controller in a local zone. There are a few caveats, which are explained in the Preparing a Non-Global Zone section. You can also install a Proxy Controller in an Oracle Solaris 11 zone. Agent Controllers, which are the part of the infrastructure that's installed on managed systems, can be put on zones or LDOMS. "Do we need any dedicated network ports from all agent monitoring systems?"  Yes. The port requirements are covered in the Network Port Requirements and Protocols table, which is in the feature reference guide as well as in the install guides.

• JSR 308 Moves Forward

  I am pleased to announce a number of recent milestones for JSR 308, Annotations on Java Types: Adoption of JCP 2.8 Thanks to the agreement of the Expert Group, JSR 308 operates under JCP 2.8 from September 2012. There is a publicly archived mailing list for EG members, and a companion list for anyone who wishes to follow EG traffic by email. There is also a "suggestion box" mailing list where anyone can send feedback to the E.G. directly. Feedback will be discussed on the main EG list. Co-spec lead Prof. Michael Ernst maintains an issue tracker and a document archive. Early-Access Builds of the Reference Implementation Oracle has published binaries for all platforms of JDK 8 with support for type annotations. Builds are generated from OpenJDK's type-annotations/type-annotations forest (notably the langtools repo). The forest is owned by the Type Annotations project. Integration with Enhanced Metadata On the enhanced metadata mailing list, Oracle has proposed support for repeating annotations in the Java language in Java SE 8. For completeness, it must be possible to repeat annotations on types, not only on declarations. The implementation of repeating annotations on declarations is already in the type-annotations/type-annotations forest (and hence in the early-access builds above) and work is underway to extend it to types.

  Healthcare is in a dramatic state of change globally and the change is being driven by patients. Patients are no longer content to wait in line, endure appointment delays and stay on hold waiting for a health insurance representative. Instead, patients are demanding on-line access to physicians, joining communities with fellow patients, scheduling appointments online and resolving claims issues over email.  To accomodate the demand for patient connectivity, providers are innovating to find new ways to collaborate with patients. To address the demand, providers are providing 24/7 access online and pioneering ways to deliver care via mobile devices -  for example using your iPhone as a heart monitor. Patient vitals can be collected before the patient even walks into the clinic.  These new approaches promise to enhance the patient experience and reduce the cost of care. Time is money both for the patient and the provider. For insurance companies, all of this is  welcome news because it reduces un-necessary time with the physician which reduces the number of claims.  Oracle is focused on enabling and securing the experience.   I am one of the Recruiters for Oracle and work in our India Recruitment Team. When we are hiring for multiple positions we often hold Recruitment Events to interview a large number of people as effectively as possible. These Events are often held on the weekend as many people are not free to attend an all day event during the working week. Just recently during a recruitment campaign we were running I was tasked to set up a Recruitment Event for some roles we were hiring for. I have set up and run weekend recruitment events in the past which have all run smoothly. However, this time arranging this recruitment event was quite a challenge for me. The planned event was taking place on a Saturday. I had almost sent out the confirmed scheduled list of candidates to the respective hiring team on Friday and was on track for the event to take place, but unfortunately there was breaking news in the media that there was a strike called in the city because of some political agitations and protests taking place on the event day. The hiring manager had rushed to me asking for my thoughts and ideas. I was in two minds on what to do. One on hand I was not ready to cancel the event because of all the work that so many people had put into getting this prepared and also I did not want to reschedule the event at the last minute if I did not need to. On the other hand I understood it may be best to reschedule the event as people may not be able to attend based on the political protests taking place on the day. In the end I decided to gather and check for other options because this might cause confusion and a problem for the scheduled candidates to drive in to the venue. So we had concluded to reschedule our event plans and moved the event to the next week. The good news is that we successfully executed this recruitment drive the following Saturday. We were glad that 100% of the candidates we able to make it to the new interview date and despite all the agitations in the city we were successful in hiring people for all the roles we had open. Things do not always go as planned. The best laid plans can sometimes be for nought based on external factors outside of our control. What this experience has taught me is that rather than focus on the negatives when you are thrown a curveball the best approach is to stay flexible and focus on finding ways to reach your outcome. Your plans may need to change but you can still achieve the results you are after if you have the right mind set.

Internal content production Related to time-to-knowledge. How do we convert internal knowledge to a format that can be used for teaching others? LMS integration How do we get our existing LMS fully integrated with our other ERP modules like HCM, Order Management, Finance, Payroll etc. Some areas have been discussed before, but we’ll focus more on these in 2011: Combining internal and external training A majority of training departments use a combination of external and internal training. Having the right mix is vital for the quality and efficiency for most training organizations. Certification More rules and regulations means managing all employee certifications is more important than ever. Evolving trends in 2011: Social Learning We have been talking about this for a long time, but 2011 will be the year where we will start using it for real (OK, I also said so last year – but this year I’m right…). Real-life use of SCORM 2004 Again a topic we have talked about for a long time, but we are now actually starting to use it to give learners a better e-learning experience. How do we engage and delight the learner? e-learning makes economical sense, it can be easy to understand, it is convenient – but how do we make it more engaging and delight our learners? How to include more types of training in LMS One of the main focus area of 2011 will be how to manage and measure mobile learning , on-the-job-training and other forms of training in the LMS. Mobile Learning With the ever growing use of smart phones mobile learning will be THE hot topic of 2011 in the training world. New topics we will begin discussing in 2011: What is beyond web 2.0 and social learning? - could it be content verification and personal accreditation?
