• Antenna Aligner part 1: In the beginning.

  Picture the scene, it's 9pm, I'm in my caravan (yes I know, I've heard all the jokes!) with my family and I'm trying to tune the tv by moving the aerial, retuning, moving the aerial again, retuning... 45 mins and much cursing later I succeed. Surely there must be an easier way than this? Aha, an app; there must be an app for that? So I search in the AppStore for such an app, but curiously drew a blank. Then the seeds of the idea started to grow. I can code, I work in a software house with lots of very clever people, surely I can make an app that points to the nearest digital tv transmitter! Not having looked into app development before, I investigated how one goes about making an iPhone app and was quickly greeted by a now familiar answer "Buy a mac!". That was not an option for many reasons, mostly wife related! My dreams were starting to fade until one of my colleagues pointed out that within Red Gate, the very company I work for, there was on-going development on a piece of software that would allow me to write an app using Visual Studio on a Windows machine, Nomad! Once I signed up for the beta program I got to work learning the Jquery mobile / Phonegap framework. Within a couple of hours I had written (in Visual Studio), built in the cloud (using Nomad) and published (via TestFlight) my first iPhone app onto my iPhone ! It didn't do much, but it was a step in the right direction. To be continued...

• How do I debug xorg/fglrx related system freezes on Ubuntu 12.10?

  My brand new system is randomly freezing and I don't know how to debug the issue. I have tried using the latest fglrx and fglrx-beta. I have loaded 3.6.x kernel. I do not see anything relevant in dmesg, kern.log, syslog, .xsession-errors or Xorg.log. I cannot ssh into the machine when frozen from another machine. I know that system resources not being stressed when the crashes happen. It seems that video and any gaming (very simple graphics games) contribute to the freezes most frequently. However, I have experienced the crash before when just using Chrome. I suspect the crashes are xorg/fglrx related, but I have no evidence to back that up. Where should I look? What should I grep for? What should I try next?

• Skip CodedUI Tests, use Selenium for Web Automation

They have a working beta product after 10 or so 2 week sprints and already had UI’s that had changed several times as they went through iterations of their UI. As a result, the QA team was falling behind with automated tests and I was tasked to help them catch up and expand their tests. The project is a website. I heard many complaints about how hard it is to work with CodedUI (writing our own code, not relying on the recorder as we wanted re-usable and more maintainable code) then it took me 4+ hours to fix one issue. It was hard to traverse the key and debugging the objects with breakpoints… I said out loud “there has to be a better way or a framework the uses jQuery to run through the tests.” Plus it seemed really slow (wait… finding the object … wait… start putting in text…). Plus some tests would randomly fail on the test agents (using the test settings and an automated build, they are run on VMs using Microsoft test agents). Enough complaining. Selenium to the rescue (mostly). The lead QA guy decided to try it out and we haven’t turned back. We are now running tests in Chrome and Firefox and they run a lot faster. We had IE running to, but some of the tests were running fine locally, but hanging on the test agents. I’ll add some hints and lessons learned in a later post.

• Installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 or Windows Phone tools in your VM (danger!)

  If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you probably know that I tend to develop stuff in a Parallels VM on a Mac. It's how I roll. I like VM's because I can trash them and do really stupid things with beta software. That said, there is a pain point that doesn't seem that well documented when it comes to installing stuff in this scenario.The WP7 tools, and SP1 for Visual Studio 2010 (perhaps only if you already have the WP7 tools installed, I'm not sure), do something strange on install. As if it weren't already a long and slow installation, for reasons I don't understand, the installer fires up an instance of Windows Phone Emulator. As you may already know, the emulator doesn't run in a VM, because it is itself a VM, apparently. What it will do is fire up your CPU, make your comprooder hot and make the fans blow harder.I found this out accidentally, as I started the (slow) phone tool installation once, and walked away. An hour and a half later, I came back to find it hadn't finished. But it was hot and the CPU was pegged, so I fired up the task manager to find XDE.exe, the phone emulator, cranking away. I had to kill it several times, and eventually the install finished. It fired up just once in the SP1 install, but it still had the same hanging effect.I can't for the life of me figure out why it does this. In a VM, I can connect the phone to it and use that, so I don't need the emulator. But this install, firing up the emulator, will make it choke until you kill the XDE.exe process. Watch out!

• Twinview broken on upgrade to ubuntu 10.10

  I have been on 9.10 for over a year on the grounds that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, I had a spare weekend and figured it was probably about time... I performed an upgrade to 10.4, and everything seemed to proceed smoothly, so I took the plunge and went for 10.10. Disaster. My twinview Nvidia display which had been working perfectly is now broken. On boot everything seems fine, but when X starts and the second monitor springs into life the primary winks out and switches off - almost as if its been put into an unsupported display mode. The system seems to think there's a second monitor - the nvidia logo is split across the two screens, but it can't seem to start. Things I've tried: Swapping the monitors (one is older than the other, and its definitely the port not the actual monitor) Rolling back to an old Xorg conf from prior to the upgrade Installing a non-beta driver direct from Nvidia (this seems to start both monitors but then apparently stops boot and causes the second display to 'wink'. Twinview seems non-functional, both displays are mirrors) Disabling EDID Disabling twinview, logging in and attempting to use the Nvidia config to re-detect the monitors (second monitor is falsely detected and won't go higher than 1024x768. Selecting 'apply' causes one screen to go blank and the other to display garbage) googling for about 5 hours looking for similar problems, none of the offered solutions seemed to work I'm at a loss, and it is looking very much like I'm going to have to go through a time consuming reinstall to downgrade back to the working 10.4. Any thoughts?

• Should I redo an abandoned project with Lightswitch?

  I had a small project that I was doing on the side. It was basically a couple of forms linked to a DB. Access was out, because it was a specifically meant to be a web application. Being a small project I used ASP.NET Dynamic Data, but, for various reasons, the project ended before deployment. I met the client recently, and he said there was a need for it still. I'm considering restarting the project with Dynamic Data, but I've seen some Lightswitch demos, and was suitably impressed with the BETA. I will wait for RTM if I use it, but is it a good idea to use Lightswitch to replace the Dyanmic Data? The amount of work I put into the Dynamic Data site isn't really an issue. Additional information: It's a system that tracks production in a small factory, broken down by line, machine, section and will generate reports. I would guess that the data structure will remain fairly constant over time, but that the reporting requirements will grow. The other thing is that the factory is part of a larger group, and I'm hopeful that, if this system succeeds, similar work with be forthcoming for other factories.

• Do you have to recreate workspaces after upgrading a TFS 2008 server to TFS 2010?

  I am just reposting this thread from a MSDN forum since it seems to be unavailable. It was very useful when I was having trouble with my folder mappings after migrating to TFS 2010. Question: I opened VS2008 and connected it to the upgraded 2010 TFS server.  Upon clicking any of our Team Projects in source control explorer I get "Team Foundation Error - The workspace MYWORKSPACE;DOMAIN\MYUsername already exists on computer MYPCNAME." Answer: The same local paths on your machine are mapped to 2 different workspaces, one on the preupgrade server and one on the postupgrade server.  It's not safe to have multiple workspaces on different servers mapped to the same local paths b/c you could pend some changes while connected to one server, and the other server would have no idea what you did.  You should either delete your conflicting workspaces from one of the servers (if you don't need them on both), or test the new TFS instance from a new workspace (on different machine). If you want to test an existing production workspace on both servers, then yes, you will have to mess around with the workspace cache. You don’t have to delete the entire cache, you just need to run "tf workspaces /remove:* /server:<serverurl>" to clear the cached workspaces from a server (the command won't delete the workspaces), and possibly "tf workspaces /server:<server>" to refresh the workspace cache for a given server.  You will also have to do back up and restore the workspace before switching servers or your local files could be inconsistent. • Ubuntu 12.04 Very slow especially with Android Studio

  I have an old laptop with the following specification: Memory: 485 MiB, Processor: Genuine intel CPU T2300 @ 1.66 GHz ×2, OS Type: 32 bit, Disk: 78.1 GB, I installed on it Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I noticed that the overall system is very slow in responding. I tried to search about that in the internet and I found some articles talking about how to make Ubuntu 12.04 LTS run fast I applied all what they said including download LXDE desktop environment and then nothing different in the system response time. Then I need to develop some android applications so, I download Android Studio (Beta) 0.8.6. The problem became worse than before whenever I tried to open the Android Studio the screen is frozen for some minutes then it took time to download the projects and initialize the work space also, when I tried to move the cursor he is move very slowly. When I tried to run my first application on the AVD it took three hours and still not run yet. I delete the Android Studio and install it again several times, I was trying to solve the problem but still nothing change. Please if you have any suggestions that may help me make my laptop and Android Studio work faster I will appreciate it for you. Thank you in advance.

• Cannot establish ssh connection to computer on local network

  I've just (re)installed ubuntu 11.10 on my main pc, and the connection times out every time I try to ssh connect to my laptop (over the local network) to retrieve the files I backed up there. The connection times out every time I try to connect. I can establish a connection in the other direction without issue. I've changed the sshd logging on the laptop to VERBOSE and restarted the daemon (because I wasn't getting any relevant syslog entries otherwise), and this is the log for the most recent connection attempt. EDIT: posted wrong logs last time. They just showed that there was a connection received, they weren't actually the sshd logs (which were in auth.log as I recently discovered). Unfortunately, that log is filling up with extremely weird error messages and it gives me no information about the connection. • Blocking popups and ads

  I'm having a fight with ads, popups and tracking cookies. But i'm having some issues. Software used: Chromium 18.0.1025.168 Extensions used: Adblock Plus (Beta)1.2 AdBlock+ Element Hiding Helper1.1.9.18 Better Pop Up Blocker2.1.6 Ghostery3.0.0 With this configuration, i'm always getting this error: Warning: This extension failed to modify a network request because the modification conflicted with another extension. I know if i disable "better popup", this goes away. It's perfectly normal, due to those extensions trying to block the same things. Problem is, i can't live without all of them! Can anyone advise me about some good configuration? Can't live without adblock plus, because i hate ads. Betterpopup blocker is essential too (believe me, chrome doesn't block a lot of popups, and i have a website or 2 that can proove that.) And ghostery is a must... i can't bare the idea of being tracked all the time by some companies. So i'm kinda lost here! everything is needed, but they conflict with each other. i mean, it has to exist a perfect combination out there, i know i'm not the only one hating the privacy issues nowadays! really thankful for any tips guys

• Is looking for code examples constantly a sign of a bad developer?

  I am a comp sci student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app dev and now I have switched to web dev and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app dev, really) I reference other code wayyyy too much. I constantly google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... Is a person a bad developer by constantly looking to code examples for moderate to complex tasks?

• Asus A8V overcurrent

  This is not as much as a question as it is a note to those out there that upgrade their motherboards with better processors and the like. Here's my story. Recently I upgraded my processor. System specifications: • Asus A8V Deluxe • 4GB RAM • ATI Radeon 3870 AGP graphics card (I believe that's it) Anyway, I decided to put a dual core Opteron 180 in this rig, but the problem was that I needed to update the BIOS to V-1017, and not knowing the consequences, I went up to the Asus site and got the newest, the latest and the greatest, 1018.002 thinking that it was the best for this board, however it wasn't. I used the Asus EXFlash, which makes life a lot easier, flashed the BIOS and all of a sudden I start getting this message: USB overcurrent protection, system shutting down in 15 seconds to protect your system. WELL SHIT... This is a new one on me... I read the blogs, all the posts on this thing, and did all that everyone else did to correct the problem, but nothing helped. So i decided to start from square one, went back to Asus and looked at the BIOS download... OMG... IT WAS A BETA. So, I downloaded the update that was suggested 1017< and installed it and wouldn't you know, it took care of the problem, no more USB overcurrent protection, no more crashing. • Anyone can suggest some Game Frameworks for GNU/Linux? [closed]

  So I've been developing a little bit with XNA + C# in Windows, not really much: just some 2D stuff, but I've found that XNA is a really good framework. I'm a GNU/Linux user, and I'm definitely migrating my desktop to Gentoo Linux (I've been using Arch in my laptop for a while now). But, of course, I need a C# + XNA alternative... I'm not really an expert in any language, so I can really pick up anything (except, maybe, Functional ones), I prefer C-Like languages like Java or Ruby, I tried Python but found the Whitespace syntax confusing. I would like to hear some of you'r suggestions, I'm not asking for "the best", but for "some suggestions", so I think this is objective enough. Probably you're going to suggest C++ + SDL, but I would prefer something more "High Level" like XNA, but I'm open to discuss anything. So... any ideas ? Note: I think this questions meets the guidelines for this site, if it doesn't: please not only downvote this question, but comment on what can I do to improve it. Thanks. PS: 2D Games, not 3D

• Is constantly looking for code examples a sign of a bad developer?

  I am a CS student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app development and now I have switched to web development and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app development , really) I reference other code way too much. I constantly Google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 Google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... Is a person a bad developer by constantly looking to code examples for moderate to complex tasks?

• What is the best objective way to measure language popularity trends? (What's better than TIOBE?)

  The best way to get data on computer language popularity that I know is the TIOBE index. But everyone knows that TIOBE is hopelessly flawed. (If someone provides a link to support this, I'll add it here.) So is there any data on programming language popularity that is generally considered meaningful? The only other option I know is to look at the trends at indeed.com, which is inherently flawed, being based on job postings. It isn't like I would make a future language decision solely based on an index, but it might provide a useful balance to the skewed perspective one obtains by talking to ones friends and colleagues. To illustrate that bias, I'll point out that based on the experience of those I personally know, the only languages used professionally today (in order of popularity) are Java, C#, Groovy, JavaScript, Ruby, Objective C, and Perl. (Though it is evident that C, C++ and PHP were used in the past.) So my question is, everyone bashes TIOBE, but is there anything else? If so, can anyone explain how we know the alternative has better methodology? Thanks.

• Making a class pseudo-immutable by setting a flag

  I have a java project that involves building some pretty complex objects. There are quite a lot (dozens) of different ones and some of them have a HUGE number of parameters. They also need to be immutable. So I was thinking the builder pattern would work, but it ends up require a lot of boilerplate. Another potential solution I thought of was to make a mutable class, but give it a "frozen" flag, a-la ruby. Here is a simple example: public class EqualRule extends Rule { private boolean frozen; private int target; public EqualRule() { frozen = false; } public void setTarget(int i) { if (frozen) throw new IllegalStateException( "Can't change frozen rule."); target = i; } public int getTarget() { return target; } public void freeze() { frozen = true; } @Override public boolean checkRule(int i) { return (target == i); } } and "Rule" is just an abstract class that has an abstract "checkRule" method. This cuts way down on the number of objects I need to write, while also giving me an object that becomes immutable for all intents and purposes. This kind of act like the object was its own Builder... But not quite. I'm not too excited, however, about having an immutable being disguised as a bean however. So I had two questions: 1. Before I go too far down this path, are there any huge problems that anyone sees right off the bat? For what it's worth, it is planned that this behavior will be well documented... 2. • Emacs stops taking input when a file has changed on disk [migrated]

  I'm using Emacs v24.3.1 on Windows 8. I had a file change on disk while I had an Emacs buffer open with that file. As soon as I attempt to make a change to the buffer, a message appears in the minibuffer. Fileblah.txt changed on disk; really edit the buffer? (y, n, r or C-h) I would expect to be able to hit r to have it reload the disk version of the file, but nothing happens. Emacs completely stops responding to input. None of the listed keys work, nor do any other keys as far as I can tell. I can't C-g out of the minibuffer. Alt-F4 doesn't work, not does Close window from the task bar. I have to kill the process from task manager. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here? In cases it's various modes not playing nice with each other, for reference, my init.el is here. Nothing complex. Here's the breakdown: better-defaults (ido-mode, remove menu-bar, uniquify buffer `forward, saveplace) recentf-mode custom frame title visual-line-mode require final newline and delete trailing whitespace on save Markdown mode with auto-mode-alist Flyspell with Aspell backend Powershell mode with auto-mode-alist Ruby auto-mode-alist Puppet mode with auto-mode-alist Feature (Gherkin) mode with auto-mode-alist The specific file was a markdown file with Github-flavored Markdown mode and Flyspell mode enabled.

• How do I install the latest version of Mupen64?

  Alright, I can't figure out how to install Mupen64 on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm gonna be moving in ~2 days with no internet connection for an indefinite amount of time, so that's why I'm asking for answers here instead of figuring it out myself (I don't have time right now to sit and fiddle with figuring out emulators). I'd like to know how to properly install the latest version of Mupen64 (Stable. No beta or anything like that) and how to be able to use a controller with it. I've heard rumor that the latest version of M64 no longer has a GUI, but that there are ways to add a GUI to it after installation, so I'd also like to know how to add the Mupen64Py UI to it. I am not totally Ubuntu savvy. I do not know how to compile stuff from source, I don't necessarily know a lot of terminology, I'm not very handy with the terminal, etc. So it would be helpful if you explain each step in an easy to understand manner. Thanks in advance to anybody who helps out. EDIT: I've already seen How do I install mupen64plus?, just so you guys know. I just need instructions that are more detailed. • Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

  I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release. • How can my team avoid frequent errors after refactoring?

  to give you a little background: I work for a company with roughly twelve Ruby on Rails developers (+/- interns). Remote work is common. Our product is made out of two parts: a rather fat core, and thin up to big customer projects built upon it. Customer projects usually expand the core. Overwriting of key features does not happen. I might add that the core has some rather bad parts that are in urgent need of refactorings. There are specs, but mostly for the customer projects. The worst part of the core are untested (as it should be...). The developers are split into two teams, working with one or two PO for each sprint. Usually, one customer project is strictly associated with one of the teams and POs. Now our problem: Rather frequently, we break each others stuff. Some one from Team A expands or refactors the core feature Y, causing unexpected errors for one of Team B's customer projects. Mostly, the changes are not announced over the teams, so the bugs hit almost always unexpected. Team B, including the PO, thought about feature Y to be stable and did not test it before releasing, unaware of the changes. How to get rid of those problems? What kind of 'announcement technique' can you recommend me?

• Web dev/programmer with 4.5 yrs experience. Better for career: self-study or master's degree? [closed]

  I'm a 28 year-old web developer/programmer with 4.5 years of experience, and I'm looking to jump-start my career. I'm trying to decide between self-study and a 1-year master's program in CS at a top school. I'm currently making 65K in a high cost-of-living area that is NOT a hot spot for technology firms. I code almost exclusively in Ruby/Rails, PHP/CodeIgniter, SQL, and JavaScript. I've slowly gained proficiency with Git. Roughly half the time I am architecting/coding, and half the time I am pounding out HTML/CSS for static brochureware sites. I'd like to make more more money while doing more challenging/interesting work, but I don't know where to start. I have an excellent academic record (math major with many CS credits, 3.9+ GPA), GRE scores, and recommendations, so I am confident that I could be admitted to a great CS master's program. On the other hand, there is the tuition and opportunity cost to consider. I feel like there are a number of practical languages/tools/skills worth knowing that I could teach myself - shell scripting, .NET, Python, Node.js, MongoDB, natural language processing techniques, etc. That said, it's one thing to read about a subject and another thing to have experience with it, which structured coursework provides. So, on to the concrete questions: What programming skills/knowledge should I develop to increase my earning potential and make me competitive for more interesting jobs? Will a master's degree in CS from a top school help me develop the above skills/knowledge, and if so, is it preferable to self-study (possibly for other reasons, e.g., the degree's value as a credential)?

• Velvet screen after grub selection

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, the boot seems to stop after selecting the ubuntu option (same with the rescue one) in the grub menu. At first I thought this was related to grub-efi, as I've had similar problems after a Ubuntu 11.04 update which replaced grub-efi with grub-pc and got me stuck on a "elf magic" grub console (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/800910). While the 11.04 problem was resolved with a simple chroot and apt-get install from the live cd, that solution doesn't work this time. The drive with the bootloader is a sata3 ssd with 64 gb gpt (sdb1 20 mb efi boot partition fat16, sdb2 60 gb root ext4 and sdb3 4 gb swap) on a msi e350ia-e45 mainboard with a pair of 2 TB ext4 mbr drives for photos/music/movies. I've tried a few grub-install/update-grub with boot-directory sdb1 from chroot, but I cant seem to go anywhere. Even this guide: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Grub2#EFI (ofc I replaced grub2 with grub in the grub-install and efibootmgr commands) doesnt seem to get me anywhere. Any help or ideas are appeciated ;) edit: I guess its the combination of gpt/uefi that also seems to haunt f16 edit: same with 12.04 beta btw

The event starts at JavaOne Oct 2nd and runs through Oct 9th. A winner will be announced and profiled in the following issue of Java Magazine. What's it about?The OSDL is on a mission to make social development easier for the Java community. You may have noticed the biggest social networks have created tools for Ruby, PHP, and other languages, but not as much for Java. We've decided to help fill the gap with a SocialLink social publishing library. You can learn more about it on Java.net. We're also interested in promoting other tools that facilitate social development such as DaliCore Framework.  For our hack, you've got one week to leverage our library and/or DailCore to create a social app. The only rules are it must be a new application, and it must leverage one or both of these tools.  How to submit Create a project that uses either the SocialLink library or the DaliCore Framework to read or publish social data. 1.
