• Launching Ops Center 12c

  Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c is most ambitious version of the Ops Center tooling that we've ever released. I think that make it appropriate that we launched it in grand style! When it became clear we were going to be complete with the 12c final release about this time of year, the marketing team proposed that we roll the launch of 12c into Oracle OpenWorld Tokyo.  I thought that sounded like a fine idea!  You see, I have always loved Japan.  I even studied a bit of Japanese language back in school. OpenWorld Tokyo was an outstanding even this year.  It was held in Roppongi, one of the most stylish districts in Tokyo. And, to make things even better, the Sakura (cherry blossoms) were blooming.  If you've never been in Japan for cherry blossom season, it's a must see!  Here are a couple of pics for you. Here is a picture from Roppongi, near the conference.  Here's a picture near the Imperial Palace.  A couple of friends from the local sales team took me here before my flight out. So, now back to the product launch! We choose to launch the product in John Fowler's "Engineered Systems" keynote address.  It made perfect sense because of the close ties of Ops Center to the Systems portfolio of products.  It was a packed house for the keynote.  Here's a picture I took just before we started -- there were also hundreds more people in "overflow" rooms in other parts of the venue. Here's a picture of me on stage during the launch. While there are countless new features in Ops Center 12c that customers will love, I had to limit myself to discussing just three. Mission Critical Clouds Solaris 11 Engineered Systems So, what does Mission Critical Cloud mean?  It means we've expanded EM's cloud capabilities in a couple of key areas. First, we've expanded the "self service provisioning" capabilities we have to include SPARC -- not just x86.  Now you can build clouds of Solaris Zones with ease!  Second, we've much more deeply integrated high-end storage and network management into the cloud layers.  These may our IaaS story is now much more powerful! For Solaris 11, we didn't simply port our monitoring agent to S11.  That would have been easy, but also boring! We support S11 deeply.  Full access to the power of the IPS packaging system, the new virtualized networking stack, new Zones features, the Auto Install framework.  If you're ready to try Solaris 11 then Ops Center is ready for you. Last is on the area of Engineered Systems.  These combinations of hardware and software are fast and powerful. However, we're also on a mission to make them ever easier to manage.  We've made major strides with Ops Center 12c. Manage these systems as racks, not individual components.  The new capabilities for the new engineered systems like Exalogic and SPARC SuperCluster and striking. One of my friends from the Oracle marketing department found a super cool place to get dinner.  It's a restaurant called Gonpachi.   In our previous blog, we started giving those of you who couldn’t make it just a sampling of the valuable takeaways from the first annual Oracle Social Summit, held Nov 14 and 15 in Las Vegas. And while yes, 13 items is a pretty healthy sampling, we wanted to go the extra mile and give you 13 more, an indication of just how much great information came out of it.  Follow the arrow, and come on in as if you were there with us. 1. Weber Shandwick takes a 70/20/10 approach when advising clients how to allocate resources to paid social opportunities. 70% of spend should go toward paid opportunities the agency and client both know work, 20% should go toward paid social the agency knows works, and 10% should go toward experimentation. (Matt Dickman – Weber Shandwick) 2. By 2017, the technically competent CMO will spend more on IT than the CIO. (Gartner Study) 3. CIOs are focused on infrastructure. As the roles of the CMO and CIO continue coming together, those CIOs have to make a very conscious decision to get CMOs what they need. 4. It’s now harder for brands to differentiate based on product. The advantage will go to the brands that are successful in garnering customer trust. 5. More and more, enterprise software is going to start looking like the software consumers are used to seeing and using. 6. You will see brands prioritizing mobile and dropping investments in www, HTML, POS systems, etc. 7. The social graph has to be added to brands’ customer data for a more holistic view. Customers will give you the information you need if the reward is appropriate. 8. Viacom did a study that showed viewers are most honest on social. Not so much on surveys or other feedback vehicles. 9. How are you determining your influencers? Influence isn’t about reach. It’s about getting people to change behavior. 10. A mix of skills is becoming critically important in a social staff. It shouldn’t be a mixture of several disciplines, not just a bunch of “social experts.” 11. If senior management isn’t engaged, the social team is forced into guessing what might be considered a “success” by the C-suite. 12. Mobile customization will be getting big investments from brands in 2013. Brands need to provide shoppers utility, not just information. 75% will use mobile this holiday season to avoid in-store madness. 13. Data becomes information, information becomes insight, and insight becomes actionable. The Oracle Social Summit brought together brands, agencies, Oracle social experts and industry thought leaders to take a serious look at where social stands today, and where it’s headed in the near future. Given the speed of social’s evolution, attending such events (or at least reading nifty summary blogs) is a good investment in making sure your enterprise isn’t falling gradually behind.

• Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011. • reinstalling phpmyadmin

  EDIT:: installed mysql-server but no phpmyadmin (since phpmyadmin was installed before mysql, that resulted an error). How to reinstall phpmyadmin with database (there is no phpmyadmin datbase)? unstalling it and reinstalling it didn't help. i was trying to install phpmyadmin (and zend framework) through synaptic manager but in the middle i was prompted for password i thought it was phpmyadmin password and i proceeded but i got error and i aborted. and then again i tried to reinstall, it reinstalled but i am not getting phpmyadmin. • Gentoo baselayout-2 problem with module parameters

  I recently switched to baselayout-2 on my Gentoo machine but I have one problem. I autoload a module bttv with paramater: card=77,77 The problem is that at boot the module is loaded without the parameter which makes the video feed useless. I cannot find the cause because the funny thing is that when I put an echo in /etc/init.d/modules to see what is passed to modprobe, this is what I got: szymanowicz ~ # /etc/init.d/modules restart * WARNING: you are stopping a boot service * Caching service dependencies ... • CISCO 2911 Router configuration

  Device cisco 2911 router configuration support is required please. I have exchange server 2010 configured and working without any errors the problem is in cisco router configuration when exchange server sends emails out the receives WAN IP not the public ip. I have configured RDNS lookups with our MX record IP addesses that match the FQDN but all our emails are rejected because it does not match with the public ip. Receiving mails problem is not an problem all mails are coming through. i am sure i am missing something on the router configuration that does not sends the public ip, can any one help me to solve this issue.   What's a "Cloud Operating System"? Oracle's recently introduced Solaris 11 has been touted as "The First Cloud OS". Interesting claim, but what exactly does it mean? To answer that, we need to recall what characteristics define a cloud and then see how Solaris 11's capabilities map to those characteristics. By now, most cloud computing professionals have at least heard of, if not adopted, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, including its vocabulary and conceptual architecture. NIST says that cloud computing includes these five characteristics: On-demand self-service Broad network access Resource pooling Rapid elasticity Measured service How does Solaris 11 support these capabilities? Well, one of the key enabling technologies for cloud computing is virtualization, and Solaris 11 along with Oracle's SPARC and x86 hardware offerings provides the full range of virtualization technologies including dynamic hardware domains, hypervisors for both x86 and SPARC systems, and efficient non-hypervisor workload virtualization with containers. This provides the elasticity needed for cloud systems by supporting on-demand creation and resizing of application environments; it supports the safe partitioning of cloud systems into multi-tenant infrastructures, adding resources as needed and deprovisioning computing resources when no longer needed, allowing for pay-only-for-usage chargeback models. For cloud computing developers, add to that the next generation of Java, and you've got the NIST requirements covered. The results, or one of them anyway, are services like the new Oracle Public Cloud. And Solaris is the ideal platform for running your Java applications. • DHCP server not starting

  I'm trying to set a DHCP server on 12.04. I installed: sudo apt-get install isc-dhcp-server My configuration files look like this: /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server INTERFACES="eth0" /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf ddns-update-style none; default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; authoritative; log-facility local7; subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 192.168.1.235 192.168.1.240; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255; option routers 192.168.1.1; default-lease-time 100000; max-lease-time 100000; } When I run sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart I get: stop: Unknown instance: isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 15384 After this if I run sudo service isc-dhcp-server status it shows that its stopped: isc-dhcp-server stop/waiting What am I doing wrong here?

• Converting a PV vm back into an HVM vm

  I have been doing some Oracle VM benchmark stuff in the last week or 2 in my off hours and yesterday I wanted to convert one of my VMs that was based on a paravirt kernel into a vm that just boots as a regular hardware virt VM with a standard x86-64 kernel. It took me a little while to figure out the fastest way so now that I have it pretty much down I wanted to share the steps. A PV kernel uses pygrub and a paravirt kernel image that lives on the vm image virtual disk. since this disk image does not have to be bootable it doesn't contain a boot sector and if you just restart the VM in hvm mode the virtual bios will just not do much as it can't start the boot process from disk The first thing I do is make a backup of my vm.cfg file :-) and then edit it as follows : the original file contains : bootloader = '/usr/bin/pygrub' I replace that with : acpi = 1 apic = 1 builder = 'hvm' device_model = '/usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm' kernel = '/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader' then changing the disk files. I change my xvd disks to hd disks and I copy over the iso image of my instal lDVD. In the case of my VM template it was based on OL5U4 So I downloaded Enterprise-R5-U4-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso and added it as a cd device. disk = ['file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/System.img,xvda,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Oracle11202RAC_x86_64-xvdb.img,xvdb,w', ] to disk = ['file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/System.img,hda,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Oracle11202RAC_x86_64-xvdb.img,hdb,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Enterprise-R5-U4-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso, hdc:cdrom,r', ] boot='d' for the network devices (vifs) I change : vif = ['bridge=xenbr2,type=netfront'] to vif = ['bridge=xenbr2,type=ioemu'] That should do it. Next, inside the VM, I copy over the regular kernel rpm that I want to end up running in hvm mode. In this example case it was : kernel-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5.x8664.rpm. I will use that later on in the process. I put this kernel simply in /root At this point I just start the vm with xm create vm.cfg and start my vnc console to the vm console. Oracle Linux will boot from the iso image, I just go through the install steps and click on UPgrade existing (not re-install). Because the VM is the same as the ISO the install won't actually do anything and it will run through instantly. When the "Reboot" button pops up, don't reboot. Switch to the command prompt console. hi alt-f2 to go to the shell prompt. Now it's easy : umount /mnt/sysimage/boot cd /mnt/sysimage chroot . mount /dev/hda1 (if that was your /boot partition) export PATH=/sbin:$PATH (just to clean that up) edit /etc/modprobe.conf and comment out the xen modules (just put a # in front) Install grub. if your /boot is hda1 then that is (hd0,0) $ grub root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) exit grub now you have a good bootsector, grub installed and you have your grub.conf file Install the new kernel cd root (this is your old /root in your pv image) rpm -ivh remove (or comment out) boot='d' in your vm.cfg restart the VM and you should be good to go, regular grub should start and load your environment. Caveats : this assumes you used labels for your filesystems. if /etc/fstab were to have devices listed then you would have to rename these device before rebooting as well. If you had a /dev/xvda disk then this would be /dev/hda or /dev/sda. All in all it is a relatively short and simple process.

A PV kernel uses pygrub and a paravirt kernel image that lives on the vm image virtual disk. since this disk image does not have to be bootable it doesn't contain a boot sector and if you just restart the VM in hvm mode the virtual bios will just not do much as it can't start the boot process from disk The first thing I do is make a backup of my vm.cfg file :-) and then edit it as follows : the original file contains : bootloader = '/usr/bin/pygrub' I replace that with : acpi = 1 apic = 1 builder = 'hvm' device_model = '/usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm' kernel = '/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader' then changing the disk files. I change my xvd disks to hd disks and I copy over the iso image of my instal lDVD. In the case of my VM template it was based on OL5U4 So I downloaded Enterprise-R5-U4-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso and added it as a cd device. disk = ['file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/System.img,xvda,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Oracle11202RAC_x86_64-xvdb.img,xvdb,w', ] to disk = ['file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/System.img,hda,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Oracle11202RAC_x86_64-xvdb.img,hdb,w', 'file:/ovs/OVM_EL5U4_X86_64_11202RAC_PVM/Enterprise-R5-U4-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso, hdc:cdrom,r', ] boot='d' for the network devices (vifs) I change : vif = ['bridge=xenbr2,type=netfront'] to vif = ['bridge=xenbr2,type=ioemu'] That should do it. Next, inside the VM, I copy over the regular kernel rpm that I want to end up running in hvm mode. In this example case it was : kernel-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5.x8664.rpm. I will use that later on in the process. I put this kernel simply in /root At this point I just start the vm with xm create vm.cfg and start my vnc console to the vm console. Oracle Linux will boot from the iso image, I just go through the install steps and click on UPgrade existing (not re-install). Because the VM is the same as the ISO the install won't actually do anything and it will run through instantly. When the "Reboot" button pops up, don't reboot. Switch to the command prompt console. hi alt-f2 to go to the shell prompt. Now it's easy : umount /mnt/sysimage/boot cd /mnt/sysimage chroot . mount /dev/hda1 (if that was your /boot partition) export PATH=/sbin:$PATH (just to clean that up) edit /etc/modprobe.conf and comment out the xen modules (just put a # in front) Install grub. if your /boot is hda1 then that is (hd0,0) $ grub root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) exit grub now you have a good bootsector, grub installed and you have your grub.conf file Install the new kernel cd root (this is your old /root in your pv image) rpm -ivh remove (or comment out) boot='d' in your vm.cfg restart the VM and you should be good to go, regular grub should start and load your environment. Caveats : this assumes you used labels for your filesystems. if /etc/fstab were to have devices listed then you would have to rename these device before rebooting as well. If you had a /dev/xvda disk then this would be /dev/hda or /dev/sda. All in all it is a relatively short and simple process.

• How can I sync Nokia smartphones' calendars with Snow Leopard Server's iCal Server?

  I've just installed and configured a Mac Mini Server for a customer who wanted to stop using Google Apps for their email. The plan was to also use the new server's calendaring service but we've hit a small snag: the staff all use iCal on Macs and Nokia E71s and there doesn't seem to be a way to use a single calendar for each person that syncs with both. iSync/iCal doesn't appear to allow their manually-synced phones to sync with the CalDAV calendars on the server, only with local calendars on their Macs. Nor does Nokia's organiser software support CalDAV but rather SyncML for live networked syncing. I was wondering if there's a plugin for iCal Server that would provide a bridge to a SyncML service I could run on the server... or anything else that would work (preferably FOSS)!

• Microphone not capturing sound on 12.04 Lenovo G580

  In both Skype and the Sound Recorder application, I am not capturing any audio from my built-in microphone. I'm not sure why. Otherwise, sound output is working well. I have tried running gstreamer-properties and setting the Default Input plugin to PulseAUdio as well (to match the output), and it didn't help. I have tried running alsamixer -V all and I only get 2 input-related entries: Capture(L R) which is on 100 and not muted (can't be either), and Analog Mic Boost which is on 20db. Extra info: Camera (video) is working well on Skype and Kamerka.   In just a little under a month, JavaOne will be in full swing (no pun intended) and thousands of Java developers will gather to hear the latest Java news, immerse themselves in Java technology and learn some new things. This year, I am fortunate enough to be able to attend, along with my Java curriculum development colleagues Matt Heimer and Mike Williams. We start our week at JavaOne teaching a one-day session at JavaU on Sunday morning. If you have never attended a training session through JavaU, you should check it out. There are some terrific sessions this year, and it might help to justify your trip to JavaOne if you can say it was for training! This year I am teaching a one day session on Java SE 7 New Features - a great session for anyone interested in the specific details of what is new in Java SE 7. Matt is teaching a one-day session on Developing Portable Java EE applications with the Enterprise JavaBeans 3.1 API and Java Persistence 2.0 API  EJB, and Mike is doing a one-day session on developing Rich Client applications with Java SE 7 using Java FX 2. I asked Matt and Mike to tell me what developers can expect from their sessions. Matt: "My session will get you up to speed on everything you need to know to create portable Java EE 6 applications using EJB 3.1 and JPA 2. I am going to cover why everyone can benefit from using EJBs (and why developers should relearn them if they haven't looked at them for years). Students who attend my session will see JPA examples showcasing how to use relational databases in an enterprise applications without programming to JDBC and without writing SQL statements. EJB and JPA benefit from being paired together, so I will also show how transaction management is easier in a container. I encourage students to bring a laptop and code as they learn!" Mike: "My session covers how to develop a rich client application using Java FX 2. Starting with the basic concepts of JavaFX, students will see how a JavaFX application is built from its layout, to its controls, to its data structures. In addition, more advanced controls like charts, smart tables, and transitions will be added to the application. Finally, a quick review of JavaFX concurrency and data binding is included. Blended with the core concepts the session will include some of the latest JavaFX technology. This includes using Scene Builder to create a JavaFX UI and connecting your XML UI definition to Java code.  In addition, packaging of the JavaFX application will be covered with some examples of the new native packaging features." As I mentioned, my session covers the changes in the Java for SE 7, including the  language changes that were voted into Java SE 7 from Project Coin. I will also look at how you can take advantage if the the new I/O library (NIO.2) for writing applications that work with files, directories and file systems. We will also look at the changes in Asynchronous I/O that are a part of the changes in NIO/2. We will spend some time looking at the changes to the Java Virtual Machine as well, including support for dynamically typed languages (JSR-292). We will spend some time looking at the Java Concurrency enhancements (JSR-166), including the new Fork/Join framework. And we'll round out the day with a look at changes in Swing, XML and a number of smaller changes in the API's.   Externe Einflüsse wie Gesetze fordern die IT auf, (unsere) Daten zu schützen. Doch wie prüft man die eingestellte Sicherheit einer Oracle Datenbank überhaupt? Ist die geforderte Sicherheit ausreichend umgesetzt und zwar im Idealfall entsprechend dem notwendigen Schutzbedarf? Wann haben Sie eigentlich die Sicherheit Ihrer Oracle Datenbank das letzte Mal überprüft? Und noch besser gefragt, kennen Sie die Bedrohungen und die davon abgeleiteten Risiken? Alles Fragen deren Antworten ein verantwortlicher Anwendungsbesitzer sofort parat haben sollte oder sehen Sie das anders? Wie kann man sich am besten vor Bedrohungen schützen? Die einzige richtige Antwort auf diese Frage ist, durch Informationen und daraus abgeleitetes Wissen. Nun umfassen Informationen und das darin versteckte Wissen wahrscheinlich sehr viele Quellen. Definieren Sie Schutz-Policies für Ihre Anwendungen.Hierunter fällt z.B. ein richtiges Anwendungs-Owner und Anwendungs-User Setup Implementieren Sie den notwendigen Datenschutz für wichtige DatenKennen Sie die Daten, die geschützt werden müssen und schützen Sie diese angemessen. Eine gute Entscheidung wäre z.B. den Oracle Enterprise Manager (Cloud Control) mit dem Lifecycle Management zu nutzen, der periodisch den Sicherheitszustand für Sie ermittelt. Eine manuelle Überprüfung ist auch möglich, erfordert aber tiefes Wissen. Doch auch trotz der hohen Wissensanforderung ist ein Verstehen, wie man eine Oracle Datenbank manuell auf Sicherheit überprüft, wichtig. Vertrauen Sie nicht mehr auf Vermutungen, sondern nehmen Sie die Sicherheit Ihrer Datenbank ernst und lernen Sie den realen Zustand Ihrer Datenbank kennen. Wissen über reale Zustände und Wissen über geeignete Konzepte schützen. Erst dann können Sie entscheiden, welche Maßnahmen tatsächlich notwendig sind. • CREDSSP 500 errors

  Hello all, We are experience a 500 http error when trying to run remote powershell on a win 2008 R2 server. I have run enable-wsmancredssp for both client and server roles on this machine. I have also run "winrm quickconfig". Also the allowfreshcredentials delegation group policy is setup correctly as well. There are active listeners running and credssp is enabled for client and service. I can connect with kerberos (by not specifing authentication type), but the following remote powershell command fails: Enter-PSSession -ComputerName serverX -credential domain\user -Authentication Credssp Error: Enter-PSSession : Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client received an HTTP server error status (500), but the remote service did not include any other information about the cause of the failure. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. At line:1 char:16 I have not been able to find any useful information on how to troubleshoot this. I have restarted Winrm, rebooted, disabled and re-enabled credssp. Please help.

• Load Balancer recommendations

  I provide hosting service for about 250 clients to date, and this is increasing on a monthly basis. For each client, I have 2 "services" configured for L4 balancing / persistence .. one on port 80, another for port 443 which redirects to another internal port as well as 4 servers per service. This equates to a total of 500 "services" and 2000 "servers". I'm currently running with a couple CoyotePoint load balancers, and have had a look at some Barracudas but so far I'm really not impressed by those. Could anyone recommend some good load balancers which would be able to support this sort of load ? And which offer a good API, or shell access to automate management.
