• How to index and search .doc files

  I have an application that needs to have .doc files uploaded to it. These documents should then be index and the whole collection of documents should be searchable. This will run on a Windows Server, without Word installed, using IIS and SqlServer, but I'd rather not be tied to SqlServer's full text indexing. I was thinking of using Lucene.Net for the indexing part and was wondering what the best way to get the text out of the .doc files would be. I could probably extract the text by reading in the whole stream and then using a regEx to pull out any regular characters, but that seems hefty and prone to error. I saw an article on using iFilters that sounds promising, but I thought I'd put this out there since it's not something I'm familiar with. P.S. If it matters, these .doc files will have mail-merge fields in them and there's no other current alternative for the .doc format.

• How to feed an xml database with tags obtained thru html forms ?

  Hello! Not a programmer, I begin with xml, html forms and xslt on Mac. I plan to use a form to post short texts in a xhtml page and invite end users to add some annotations to the said text. The users would select a specific part of the text posted and each annotation would stand for one specific chain of characters. My goal is to consolidate the tags obtained from various user's annotations to one xml "knowledge base" containing the original text with all the revision indicators. Then I plan to use xslt sheets to product various reports based on the tags obtained. my two questions are : 1- am I dreaming ? Is it really possible to do that with xml, xforms, xslt without using java, php, ajax or other seasoned programmer's tools ? 2- What should be my focus for further explorations aiming in that direction ? • Vim digraphs is not working

  I've tried to input digraphs in Vim (without vi compatibility), and unfortunately I can't. After using ControlKP * it should input big greek pi letter. I've also tried using PBS * with :set digraph, but no success either. • UIWebview handle popup view

  I've a webpage with one text-box and one button. Click on button will show a popup for searching. On popup page,has 2 buttons, "Search" and "Close". Input the text and click Search, the result will display on a list on this popup, click on a row will close the popup and fill the value to text-box on main-page. On Destop browser, it works fine On Safari on iPad, it will open new tab instead of a popup but work fine. UIWebview in my app, on main-page, click the button, I will go to Search page, but when click Search button and close button, nothing happened, I know because 2 buttons will close the popup or the tab, but I don't know how to handle on my Webview, and also I can fill data to main-page or not? • vb.net session variable passing "space" from one page to another

  i have 2 aspx webpages with vb.net code. On the first page, I have a text box, on first page that says "Enter Hobby", but its not a required textbox. So if the user clicks submit, it'll load up the second page. Now in the second page i have textbox "hobby" which has maxlength = 10. and in the vb.net code i have hobby.text = session("hobby"). if the user doesnt fill up hobby in first page, the session comes with 10 "spaces" since maxlength is 10. I tried hobby.text = TRIM(session("hobby"), but nothing happens. Any idea how i can lose the spaces if nothing is inputted?

  I have code that's working beautifully on my development machine, but when deployed to the server is throwing null reference exception. So, I can't step through the code, but I've pinned down the culprit. But now I am puzzled. Here's the code. The question is below. Now here's the quandary.. The first line that sets the label returns False, so certs is not null. But the second line throws an null reference exception. How is this possible?

• Excel 2007 save import steps on csv file?

  I have a csv file that constantly needs opened into Excel and then have the data copied over to a separate workbook. I find the process of having to click through all of the dialogs, setting the text identifier, setting the columns to all be text extremely tedious. In many actions with data like this in regards to MSSQL or Access the program will ask you if you wish to save these steps however Excel doesn't readily ask that. Is there any way to get a comparable usage with Excel?

• High resolution on small screen

  I just purchased a new ultrabook (Asus UX32VD). Awesome laptop, but I am having trouble using it with its native resolution being 1920 x 1080. Text is so small and hard to read. I have increased the text size in the display options but it don't really improve it for all scenarios, especially in webpages. I am wondering if there is a possible solution to this? Simply lowering the resolution makes everything look pixelated.

• Rails 2 and Ngnix: https pages can't load css or js (but will load graphics)

  ADMISSION: i've posted this same question on stackoverflow, before realising it's probabaly better suited to superuser, but it kind of depends on the answer: If it turns out to be a problem in my nginx config, it's definitely superuser. If it turns out to be a problem in my Rails config (or code) then it's arguably stackoverflow. I'm adding some https pages to my rails site. In order to test it locally, i'm running my site under one mongrel_rails instance (on 3000) and nginx. I've managed to get my nginx config to the point where i can actually go to the https pages, and they load. Except, the javascript and css files all fail to load: looking in the Network tab in chrome web tools, i can see that it is trying to load them via an https url. Eg, one of the non-working file urls is https://cmw-local.co.uk/stylesheets/cmw-logged-out.css?1383759216 I have these set up (or at least think i do) in my nginx config to redirect to the http versions of the static files. This seems to be working for graphics, but not for css and js files. If i click on this in the Network tab, it takes me to the above url, which redirects to the http version. So, the redirect seems to be working in some sense, but not when they're loaded by an https page. Like i say, i thought i had this covered in the second try_files directive in my config below, but maybe not.   I would like to define a key & value in Settings.settings and bind the value by declaration in the XAML (not in the code behind by command). Here's what I've been trying in vain: Create a WPF project "Exp1" with Visual Studio Express 2010. Set one key named "TextFromSettings" to the value "Some Text from Setting". Add the attribute xmlns:p="clr-namespace:Exp1.Properties;assembly=Exp1" to the tag. • How do I get the Mac OS X 'quick look' feature to be more programmer-friendly?

  There are numerous text files that are always included in common downloads such as rails plugins: LICENSE, ChangeLog, Rakefile, etc. I know these files are plain-text, but Mac OS X refuses to acknowledge this automatically. If I hit the spacebar in Finder to activate "quick look", the icon becomes huge but the contents of the file are not shown, presumably because they have no file extension. How do I stop this madness so I can quickly look at READMEs just by hitting the spacebar? I've already got a ton of text editors installed on my mac: this question is purely about efficiency and making simple files accessible as quickly as possible.

  I have a list of strings (company names, in this case), and a Java program that extracts a list of things that look like company names out of mostly-unstructured text. I need to match each element of extracted text to a string in the list. Caveat: the unstructured text has typos, things like "Blah, Inc." referred to as "Blah," etc. I've tried Levenshtein Edit Distance, but that fails for predictable reasons. Are there known best-practices ways of tackling this problem? Or am I back to manual data-entry?

I have this in a .js file on my web server: Q=document.selection?document.selection.createRange().text:document.getSelection(); alert(Q); I highlight some text on a web page (tested with Chrome and firefox) and paste this into the address bar: javascript:(function(){vara=document.createElement('SCRIPT');a.type='text/javascript';a.src='http://automatethegame.com/js/test.js?';document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(vara)})(); it appears to do nothing. Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

  Most of the online sites on registration do send a link to activate the site and on any further correspondence with the end user they provide information about the site and also provide the login credentials with password in clear text (as given below) Username - [email protected] Password - mysecretpassword What would you do in such a case? From a usability perspective does it make sense to send the password information in clear text or should you just avoid sending this information. I was under the impression that most of the passwords are MD5 hashed before storing in the database and hence the service provider will not have any access to clear text passwords, is this a security violation?
