• Run a MongoDB configuration server without 3GB of journal files

  For a production sharded MongoDB installation we need 3 configuration servers. According to the documentation "the config server mongod process is fairly lightweight and can be ran on machines performing other work". However, in the default configuration, they all have journalling enabled, and with preallocation this takes up 3 GB of disk space. I assume that the actual data and transaction volume of a config server is quite small, so that this seems a bit too much. Is there a way to (safely!) run these config servers with much less disk use for the journal? Do I need journalling at all on config servers? Can I set the journal size to be smaller?

• What is the best strategy for transforming unicode strings into filenames?

  I have a bunch (thousands) of resources in an RDF/XML file. I am writing a certain subset of the resources to files -- one file for each, and I'm using the resource's title property as the file name. However, the titles are every day article, website, and blog post titles, so they contain characters unsafe for a URI (the necessary step for constructing a valid file path). I know of the Jersey UriBuilder but I can't quite get it to work for my needs as I detailed in a different question on SO. Some possibilities I have considered are: Since each resource should also have an associated URL, I could try to use the name of the file on the server. The down side of this is sometimes people don't name their content logically and I think the title of an article better reflects the content that will be in each text file. Construct a white list of valid characters and parse the string myself defining substitutions for unsafe characters. The downside of this is the result could be just as unreadable as the former solution because presumably the content creators went through a similar process when placing the files on their server. Choose a more generic naming scheme, place the title in the text file along with the other attributes, and tell my boss to live with it. So my question here is, what methods work well for dealing with a scenario where you need to construct file names out of strings with potentially unsafe characters? Is there a solution that better fills out my constraints?

• VSDB to SSDT part 3 : command-line deployment with SqlPackage.exe, replacement for Vsdbcmd.exe

  For our continuous integration needs, we use a powershell script to handle deployment. A simpler approach would be to have a deployment task embedded within the build process. See the solution provided here by Jakob Ehn (a most interesting read which also dives into the '”deploying from Visual Studio” specifics) : http://geekswithblogs.net/jakob/archive/2012/04/25/deploying-ssdt-projects-with-tfs-build.aspx   For our needs, though, clearly separating our build phase from our deployment phase is important. It allows us to instantly deploy old versions. Also it is more convenient for continuous integration. So we stick with the powershell script approach. With VSDB projects, that script used to call the following command (the vsdbcmd executable was locally available, along with needed libraries): vsdbcmd.exe /a:Deploy /dd /cs:<CONNECTIONSTRING TO TARGET DB> /dsp:SQL /manifest:< PATH TO .deploymanifest FILE>   To be able to do the approximately same thing with a SSDT produced file (dacpac), you would call this command on a machine which has VS2012 installed (or the SSDT installed, see here : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh500335%28v=vs.103%29):   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   And from within a powershell script :   & "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   The command will consume a publish.xml file where the connection string and the deployment options are specified. • OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

  I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file. • Are project managers useful in Scrum?

  There are three roles defined in Scrum: Team, Product Owner and Scrum Master. There is no project manager, instead the project manager job is spread across the three roles. For instance: The Scrum Master: Responsible for the process. Removes impediments. The Product Owner: Manages and prioritizes the list of work to be done to maximize ROI. Represents all interested parties (customers, stakeholders). The Team: Self manage its work by estimating and distributing it among themselves. Responsible for meeting their own commitments. So in Scrum, there is no longer a single person responsible for project success. There is no command-and-control structure in place. That seems to baffle a lot of people, specifically those not used to agile methods, and of course, PM's. I'm really interested in this and what your experiences are, as I think this is one of the things that can make or break a Scrum implementation. Do you agree with Scrum that a project manager is not needed? Do you think such a role is still required? Why?

• Problems starting MySQL on Mac OS X

  I am not able to start MySQL server on Mac OS X 10.4.11. MySQL was installed using Macports. MySQL was running fine until it suddenly died without any obvious reason. When running "mysql", I get the error message: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2) If I try to start MySQL manually, I get the following error message: sudo /opt/local/share/mysql5/mysql/mysql.server start Starting MySQL/opt/local/share/mysql5/mysql/mysql.server: line 159: kill: (636) - No such process ERROR! In /etc/mysql/my.cnf I have: socket = __PREFIX/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock But the path "opt/local/var/run/mysqld/" does not exist on my system. I tried to change the socket path to "__PREFIX/var/run/mysql5/ mysqld.sock" (which is where the socket is located). Unfortunately, this did not help either. Owner and Permissions for /opt/local/var/run/mysql5/ are correctly set. Any suggestions on how to start MySQL again? Thanks for your advice.

• How can I create (or do I even need to create) an alias of a DNS MX record?

  I am in the process of moving my DNS records from Network Solutions to the Amazon Route 53 service. While I know and understand a little about the basic kinds of records, I am stumped on how to create the record that will point to the MX record on Network Solutions (if I'm even saying that right). On Network Solutions I have this: Mail Servers (MX Records) Note: Mail Servers are listed in rank order myapp.net Add Sub-Domain MXMailServer(Preference) TTL inbound.myapp.net.netsolmail.net.(10) 7200 Network Solutions E-mail I have read that the payload for an MX record state that it must point to an existing A record in the DNS. Yet in the example above, that inbound.myapp... record only has the words "Network Solutions E-mail" next to it. Our email is hosted at Network Solutions. I have already created the CNAME records that look like this: mail.myapp.net 7200 mail.mycarparts.net.netsolmail.net. smtp.myapp.net 7100 smtp.mycarparts.net.netsolmail.net. Since I am only using Amazon as the DNS, do I even need to do anything with that MX record? I appreciate your help, I googled and researched this before I posted, this is my first post on webmasters although I've been on SO for a few years.

Because Alfresco will not allow its partners to work with the Community edition, I have found it devilishly tricky to find consultants that specialize in Alfresco to help me with this project. Can anyone point me in the direction of someone that can help me get this system up an running? • HTTP/1.1 Status Codes 400 and 417, cannot choose which

  I have been referred to here that it might be of better help, I've got a processing file which handles the user sent data, before that, however, it compares the input from client to the expected values to ensure no client-side data change. I can say I don't know lot about HTTP status codes, but I have made up some research on it, and to choose which one is the best for unexpected input handling. So I came up with: 400 Bad Request: The request cannot be fulfilled due to bad syntax 417 Expectation Failed: The server cannot meet the requirements of the Expect request-header field Now, I cannot be really sure which one to use, I have seen 400 Bad Request being used alot, however, whatI get from explanation is that the error is due to an unexistent request rather than an illegal input. On the other side 417 Expectation Failed seems to just fit for my use, however, I have never seen or experimented this header status before. I need your experience and opinions, thanks alot! • How do you use blank lines in your code ?

  There has been a few remarks about white space already in discussion about curly braces placements. I myself tend to sprinkle my code with blank lines in an attempt to segregate things that go together in "logical" groups and hopefully make it easier for the next person to come by to read the code I just produced. In fact, I would say I structure my code like I write: I make paragraphs, no longer than a few lines (definitely shorter than 10), and try to make each paragraph self-contained. For example: in a class, I will group methods that go together, while separating them by a blank line from the next group. if I need to write a comment I'll usually put a blank line before the comment in a method, I make one paragraph per step of the process All in all, I rarely have more than 4/5 lines clustered together, meaning a very sparse code. I don't consider all this white space a waste because I actually use it to structure the code (as I use the indentation in fact), and therefore I feel it worth the screen estate it takes. For example: for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) { if (i % 3 == 0) continue; array[i] += 2; } I consider than the two statements have clear distinct purposes and thus deserve to be separated to make it obvious. So, how do you actually use (or not) blank lines in code ?

• Migrating to new dovecot server; Dovecot fails to authenticate using old password database

  I am migrating my companies intranet from a OS X server to an Ubuntu 12.04 server. We use a flat file to store user names and passwords hashs. This file is used by Apache and Dovecot to authenticate users. The Ubuntu server is running Dovecot 2.0 while the OS X server is running Dovecot 1.2. I have already migrated WebDav which uses Apache for authentication. Authentication works. I'm in the process of migrating our Prosody server which uses Dovecot for authentiation. Dovecot is up and running, but when I test authentication using either telnet a login username password or doveadm sudo doveadm auth username, I get dovecot: auth: passwd-file(username): unknown user dovecot: auth: Debug: client out: FAIL#0111#011user=username in my log file. I can use sudo dovecot user username to perform a user lookup and it will return the user's info. I can generate a password hash locally and Dovecot will authenticate the test password just fine.

• Roaming profile migration failed using Windows explorer manual copy

  Hi All, I'm at the final stage of migrating an old demoted DC server, now I'm stuck in migrating/copying the roaming profiles of the users from the old win2k server (oldServer1) into the new win2k3 server (newServer1) there are lots of profiles which points into the old server: \\oldServer1\profiles\user1 \\oldServer1\profiles\user2 \\oldServer1\profiles\user3 . . . \\oldServer1\profiles\userN in the ProfilePath I'd like to move it into: \\newServer1\profiles\user1 \\newServer1\profiles\user2 \\newServer1\profiles\user3 . . . \\newServer1\profiles\userN I tried to copy paste from my DOMAIN\Administrator account but it is failed to copy ? i cannot even browse inside the directory of user1 until userN ? is there any fastest way to do the copy process rather than "taking ownership" for each of those directory one by one ? [hopefully by taking ownership the user will still be able to use their profile normally] Thanks.

• Consolidate SQL Server Reporting Services

  I've been a big fan of consolidating as many DB's to a few SQL servers for a while and I've had great success with it. However, I've never had to deal with SQL reporting services. Has anyone migrated SSRS from a bunch of random SQL servers into a consolidated SQL server? I don't exactly know a whole lot about SSRS which is part of the problem. To my knowlege, it's one DB per SSRS instance, so it sounds like i'd need to find a way of exporting data and merging it. Basically the process used to look like: Move DB from SQL Express to shared SQL server Change point in APP to point at new SQL server With reporting services, how do I move the reporting service compenent of the DB as well? I realize I may need to tweak the app, but my question is on the SQL side.

• Black screen on login, can get thru decrypt disk and access command line but no GUI

  Running 12.04 64 bit fresh alternative install, with disk crypto on a new Lenovo laptop Install didn't connect and install modules, even though I had the network cable plugged in and don't have any whacky proxy settings. I had to manually install ubunut-desktop and define sources after initial installation, so this seemed a bit weird (ISO matched MD5 sum though) I unplug the network cable, otherwise I get a black screen that I can do nothing with. So I turn laptop on, I have disk encryption, I type in the password at the Ubuntu decryption GUI then get "set up successfully" message "Waiting for network configuration ..." then "Waiting for up to 60 more seconds for network configuration" At this stage (a) If I wait for it then I get a black screen that I can do nothing with. (b) If I interrupt the process by pressing escape, then I break through to the command line. From the command line, I can go ahead and login, then plug my network cable in to do apt-get commands. As a precaution I do some house keeping which takes a few mins to run: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade Running startx to get to the GUI gives: Fatal server errror: no screens found The .Xauthority file is being created in my home directory but it's empty. I review my order and note the system graphics: Intel HD Graphics (WWAN or mSATA capable) So it's weird that I can't get to the Gnome. It looks like drivers aren't working. Is there a way of getting Intel drivers from the command line? Or do you have any other suggestions on what to try next?

• What are possible ways to override User Access Control (UAC) while registering an ActiveX Control?

  In an ASP.NET 2.0 Application, an ActiveX control is used. When user first time access the appliction and he/she did not have that ActiveX registered. Application show a popup to install ActiveX. When user follow the process, ActiveX is registered and application loads the ActiveX to accomplish desired tasks. In Windows Vista, Win 7 and Win 8, User Access Control (UAC) is prompted to allow to install the ActiveX at very first time. This happens even if user is Administrator too. What are alternatives to override this UAC component while installing ActiveX ? Suggestions are appreciated.

• ASP.NET developers turning to Visual WebGui for rich management system

  When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition for the desktop users very easy. The richer GUI of Visual WebGui compared to ASP.NET conveyed some initial concerns about performance. But the Visual WebGui performance turned out to be a surprising advantage as the website maintained good response times. Working with Visual WebGui required a paradigm shift for the development process as some of the usual methods of coding with ASP.NET did not apply. However, the transition was fairly easy due to the simplicity and intuitiveness of Visual WebGui as well as the good support and documentation. “The shift into a different development paradigm was eased by the Visual WebGui web forums which are very active thanks to a large, involved community. • Unable to connect to wireless internet(wifi) through KDE plasma desktop

  I installed the KDE plasma desktop through Ubuntu software center. I am on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. After the install, Im unable to connect to my wifi connection in the KDE session. But I can connect to my wifi perfectly through GNOME session. I've tried a lot without much success. Also KDE doesn't store my password correctly and keeps prompting for authorization again and again. Some of the things that I noticed. Network is detected, Network name and strength is also displayed. Other characteristics also appear properly. When the credentials are supplied, it accepts them and continually displays the message "Setting network address". However this process never succeeds. At this stage the password is repeatedly asked many times but the connection is never established. Some of the other things that I did, I have also tried other things like restarting my modem and the computer. That didn't work. I tried to restart nm-applet and KNetworkManager. That didn't work either. ifconfig display all my interfaces and Mac addresses correctly. Since its working fine GNOME the drivers are fine. This is sure a KDE specific issue. Other threads related to this on the interwebs don't offer much information either. Please share a solution for this.

• Installing Win8 from ISO image error

  I installed a new SSD in my PC laptop which came with an OEM version of Windows 8. After trying unsuccesfully to get the OEM version of Windows onto the SSD drive I gave up and purchased and downloaded a NEW copy of Windows 8. After that I created an ISO image on my desktop machine and followed the instructions here to create a bootable USB flash drive. However, after going through the boot install process with the USB flash drive on my laptop I get the following message 'The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.' But I wasn't asked to enter any key! Is this because the ISO image was created on a different machine? I really don't get why this should be so difficult.

• LDAP search filter for Active Directory

  Hello, I'm trying to look for users inside Active Directory through a LDAP query. Basically I'm searching for the user in this way: Search DN: dc=mydomain, dc=com Filter: (sAMAccountName=USER) where USER is replaced with the provided username. Now if USER is only the username without domain (for ex. "Joe") this works fine. However I receive them in the form (domain\username, for ex. "myDomain\Joe") and obviously the search fails. I see two ways: using a regex inside the Search Filter to discard the domain using a completely different search filter I'm no LDAP expert and I don't even know if it's possible to use regular expressions inside the search filters. Does anyone know if it's possible and how? P.S. I cannot pre-process the username to strip the domain. This cannot be changed, as it's all part of a large system.

Many people have problems with Hudson Azalia in Ubuntu, but I found no working solution. I can't see what drivers this soundcard uses. Do I need any additional drivers for my soundcard, and where would I find them?

• Converting a bunch of MP3s to mono?

  I have a bunch of stereo MP3s I'd like to convert to mono. What is the best way to do this? I would prefer something that would let be batch process them. I want to keep the quality as close to the original as possible. My files are also in different bitrates, so I don't want to make all files 320kpbs when some are only 128. Also, is there any quick way to see which files are stereo out of my entire library?

• Restoring factory image of HP Laptop

  I use a HP G62. I am unable to use my recovery disk to restore to factory settings. I had no problems earlier until I created an additional partition which I hear might have changed my hard disk to dynamic. How do I get back to 'normal'? I don't mind formatting the disk. I just want my factory OS back. .............. i get an error message at about 69 percent telling me that the restoration process failed. I'm using the factory image disks i created using the hp recovery manager. I have tried formating the hard drive clean and then restoring woth the cd, it didn't work. I was always able to restore before i created that partition.
