• How to configure a has_many association with non-ActiveRecord model

  My Rails app has a normal ActiveRecord "Account" model stored in the database. The model will store the URL to a remote XML file which defines some other objects. For example, the Account has_many :galleries but the Gallery model is simply defined by nodes in the XML document. So how do I get /accounts/1/galleries to show the galleries from that account's XML? How do I setup this relationship? I know how to do basic non-AR models, but I'm not sure how to define the association or if I need to create a Gallery model at all.

• Equivalent of Switch Statement in MySql 5

  Using MySql 5, I have a task where I need to update one table based on the contents of another table. For example, I need to add 'A1' to table 'A' if table 'B' contains 'B1'. I need to add 'A2a' and 'A2b' to table 'A' if table 'B' contains 'B2', etc.. In our case, the value in table 'B' we're interested is an enum. Right now I have a stored procedure containing a series of statements like: INSERT INTO A SELECT 'A1' FROM B WHERE B.Value = 'B1'; --Repeat for 'B2' -> 'A2a', 'A2b'; 'B3' -> 'A3', etc... Is there a nicer more DRY way of accomplishing this?

• Switching Javascript Function states

  Dear experts, I would like to implement a API of Javascript that sort of resemble a light switch. For instance, there are two buttons on the actual HTML page act as the UI. Both of the buttons have event handlers that invokes a different function. Each function have codes that act like a state, for instance. button1.onclick=function (){ $("div").click( //code effects 2 ) } button2.onclick=function (){ $("div").click( //Code effects 2 ) } I the code works fine on the surface but the 2 state functions overlap. the effects is going to take place for the rest of the way until the next reload of the document. Basically what I want to achieve is that when 1 button is clicked, it will switch "OFF" the state of function invoked by the other button and vice versa. Thus, the effects achieved are unique are not overlapped. Is there anyway to achieve this or could any experts point me to the right direction. Thanks in advance.

• Using a password to generate two distinct hashes without reducing password security

  Hi there, I'm in the process of designing a web application that will require the storage of GPG keys in an encrypted format in a database. I'm planning on storing the user's password in a bCrypt hash in the database. What I would like to be able to do is to use that bCrypt to authenticate the user then use the combination of the stored bCrypt hash and another hash of the password to encrypt and decrypt the GPG keys. My question is whether I can do this without reducing the security of the password? I was thinking I may be able to use something like an HMAC-SHA256 of a static string using the password and a salt as the secret key. Is there a better way to do this that I haven't thought of? • PHP: $_POST array to XML file and display results.

  I'm creating a "Madlibs" page where visitors can create funny story things online. The original files are in XML format with the blanks enclosed in XML tags (Such as blablabla <PluralNoun></PluralNoun> blablabla <Verb></Verb> ). The form data is created using XSL and the results are saved using a $_POST array. How do I post the $_POST array between the matching XML tags and then display the result to the page? I'm sure it uses a "foreach" statement, but I'm just not familiar enough with PHP to figure out what functions to use. Any help would be great. Thanks, E

  I have known that If you define a bunch of @"" NSString objects in the source code in Mac OS. These NSStrings will be stored in a segment in the Mach-O library. Section sectname __ustring segname __TEXT addr 0x000b3b54 size 0x000001b7 offset 731988 align 2^1 (2) reloff 0 nreloc 0 flags 0x00000000 reserved1 0 reserved2 0 If I hex dump the binary, they are aligned closely one by one with a 0x0000as separator. What I want to know is how does the loader in Mac OS X load these NSStrings when the program runs? Are they loaded simpily by recognize the 0x0000 separator or these is a string offset table elsewhere in the binary pointing to separate NSString objects? Thanks. (What I really want to do is the increase the length of one of the NSString, so I have to know how the loader recognize these separate objects)

• Is is possible to make a shaped, alpha-blended dialog?

  I'm making a non-rectangular dialog, modelled over an image from Photoshop (the image is the background of the dialog, and the user will see trough the transparent part of the image). I'ts like a dashboard-style window for a media-app with a few custom-drawn controls. Most of the background-image is either opaque or 100% transparent - but in between there is a thin area of partially transparent pixels, ment to blend the image smootly into the background. This works great for web-graphics, but I have not found a way to make this work for Windows windows. I'm using the Windows Template Library (WTL), msvc 2008 - and the app must run on Windows XP as well as Vista and Windows 7. Currently, I'm simply using the opaque part of the background-image to create a GDI clipping-region, but this gives pretty rough edges. Does anyone know about any API functions to accomplish this (part of WTL, or reachable from WTL)?

  I've got a winforms application that is set up in the following manner: 2 buttons, a textbox, a collection K, function X and another function, Y. Function X parses a large database and enumerates some of its data in the global collection. Button 1 calls function X. Function Y walks through the above collection and prints out the data in the textbox. Button 2 calls function Y. I'd like to call function X through a worker thread in such a way that: The form remains responsive to user input. This comes intrinsically from the use of a separate thread. There is never more than a single instance of function X running at any point in time. K can be accessed by both functions at all times. What would be the most efficient implementation of the above environment ?

  I'm writing code like: class Game { int getMouseX() { return inputManager.getMouseX() ; } } ; I remember seeing code like this and hating it. One function passes off to another? What is this "pattern" (or, possibly, anti-pattern) called? I don't like it! On the other hand, it saves exposing the InputManager to the user of the class... would that be a better choice? Or should Game simply not contain InputManager? Edit What about using multiple inheritance instead? class Game : public InputManager, public Window { // by virtue of inheriting InputManager and Window, // Game now has "acquired" the capabilities of // InputManager's public functions, without requiring delegate. } ; Have I not found a reasonably good use for multiple inheritance??

  Hello there, I have a website where documents are saved in xml documents, all with the same structure. I need a search engine where I am able to choose documents with the highest relevance according to the key words given by a searching user. I thought it could (?) be a good idea to have one using XQuery rather than having the information stored twice (in XML docs + mysql database) and querying the mysql database for relevance searches. Is XQuery any good for this, and how, and what speed can I expect on +1000 documents of about 7kb each. Thank you for your time. Kind regards

  Here's the scenario: User interacts with Adobe flex webpage to configure reports based on some data stored server side. They configure their view and have THAT view emailed to them daily. I've got the report builder, the part I'm trying to figure out is how to render the report server side and send it out as email (native flex functionality? convert to html? take screenshot? assume something is running client side?...)   I have a set of data which needs to be imported from a excel sheet, lets take the simplest example. Note: the data might eventually support uploading any locale. e.g. assuming one of the fields denoting a user is gender mapped to an enumeration and stored in the database as 0 for male and 1 for female. 0 and 1 being short values. If I have to import the values I cannot expect the user to punch in numbers (since they are not intuitive and is cumbersome when the enumerations are bigger), what would be the correct way to map to enumerations. Should we ask them to provide a string value in these cases (e.g. male or female) and provide the transformation to a enum in our code by wring a method public static Gender Gender.fromString(String value)

  I have a problem when trying to execute this update statement (below) using C# SqlCommand when I execute it locally it works fine, but when deployed to another machine I got a permission error The SELECT permission was denied on the object Order ... The UPDATE permission was denied on the object Order ... Update Statement "UPDATE Order SET Request = @request WHERE Id = @ID"; Is there any way to add GRANT SELECT and GRANT UPDATE to a single statement like the update above without using a stored procedure? or the SP is the way to go on this? • How to have favicon / icon set when bookmarklet dragged to toolbar?

  I've made myself a bookmarklet, and it functions just fine, but when added to a toolbar in Opera or Firefox, it just takes on the default bookmark icon for the browser (a globe and a star, respectively). My site has a favicon, and the window, tab and even [site] bookmark uses the favicon I've specified. Just not my bookmarklet. How can I code my site or bookmarklet so that the bookmarklet gets the favicon, too? I'm aware of various manual hackery techniques users can use to set the favicon after the fact, but those are undesirable solutions.

  I'm changing our webservices to an async model. And for that I have to change over a hundred methods. Doing it manually is one (unappealing) option. Is there no way to programmatically parse & change multiple functions/code files? Being used to Java, I'm pretty familiar with the paradigm of one class per source code file, bundling all the data and method definitions with appropriate comments and annotations etc. However Clojure offers a lot more flexibility, and I'm not sure how I should structure my project (likely to end up as a medium sized app, maybe 5,000 lines with three or four distinct subsystems) In particular I'm wrestling with: What guidelines should I use to determine whether code should be in a single namespace vs. separated out into different namespaces? Should each protocol/datatype have it's own namespace + source file with associated set of functions? When should I require vs. use other namespaces?

  i have some rows of data displayed in a table and on mouse over of each row i've list two buttons inside a div element and then display it for some time. And i've associated some functions to be called on clicking the buttons that are dynamically created and displayed elements.. So what i did was i wrote a function which will create elements dynamically and place them exactly where i wanted using styles. And i wrote another function which will remove these dynamically added elements. I called them on mouseover and mouseout events of the row. now when i move mouse out the row to click the button they get disappeared bcoz of my mouseout function. So how can i proceed this? And what is the perfect method to create these kind of stuffs?

• Building an http packet in libnet(tcp packet), Please help us as soon as posible. we are stuck!

  we are building a NAT program,we change each packet that comes from our internal subnet, change it's source IP address by libnet functions.( catch the packet with libpcap, put it sniff structures and build the new packet with libnet) over TCP, the syn/ack packets are good after the change, and when a HTTP-GET request is coming, we can see by wireshark that there is an error on the checksum field.. all the other fields are exactly the same as the original packet. Is anyone knows what can cause this problem? the new checksum in other packets is calculated as it should be.. but in the HTTP packet it doesn't..

• Django: Gracefully restart nginx + fastcgi sites to reflect code changes?

  Hi, Common situation: I have a client on my server who may update some of the code in his python project. He can ssh into his shell and pull from his repository and all is fine -- but the code is stored in memory (as far as I know) so I need to actually kill the fastcgi process and restart it to have the code change. I know I can gracefully restart fcgi but I don't want to have to manually do this. I want my client to update the code, and within 5 minutes or whatever, to have the new code running under the fcgi process. Thanks

  According to Wikipedia: An object is first-class when it: can be stored in variables and data structures can be passed as a parameter to a subroutine can be returned as the result of a subroutine can be constructed at runtime has intrinsic identity (independent of any given name) Somebody had once told me that raw pointers are not first class objects while smart pointers like std::auto_ptr are. But to me, a raw pointer (to an object or to a function) in C++ does seem to me to satisfy the conditions stated above to qualify as a first class object. Am I missing something?

• When a template is rendered in template tag code, MEDIA_URL is not in context

  I want to use a template for 2 template tags. In the template, I used {{ MEDIA_URL }} and discovered that MEDIA_URL is not in context as expected. Had to use get_config and pass it manually. Why is the setting not in context, how else can I put it there, or maybe there's a better way that a template tag?
