  Here is another question I received via email. “Hi Pinal, I have a unique requirement. We measure time spent on any webpage in measure of seconds. I recently have to build a report over it and I did few summations based on group of web pages. Now my manager wants to convert the time, which is in seconds to the format Hour : Minute : Seconds. I researched online and found a solution on stackoverflow for converting seconds to the Minute : Seconds but could not find a solution for Hour : Minute : Seconds. • Is a backlink with a duplicate description and title from a news site bad for SEO?

  I have a blog with over a thousand posts. I have posted some of those to a news aggregator site and included the same preview photo and description that I used for it on my own site and the link to the post on my site. Since the site is mainly videos and images, the description was usually a complete match of 4-6 lines of text. It now looks that I have been affected by panda and since I am not doing any bad stuff, I suspect it might be due to duplicate content. For example, when I search the title of my posts, sometimes my site is not even returned, but the news aggregator site is. Could this be the problem with panda?

• Fix for EF4 Profiler Issue Coming in next Cumulative Update

  Hey!  What do you know?  Microsoft Connect really works! I was very happy this morning to open my email and find a notice from Umachandar on the SQL Programmability Team that they have created a fix for the Odd Profiler Results with EF4 issue that I wrote about last June.  Not only did I blog about it, but I logged an item to Connect with repro steps and sample code.  And now, they have announced that they have a fix for this problem and that it will be included in the next Cumulative Update for SQL Server 2008 R2. For those of you not running 2008 R2, or who prefer to wait for full Service Packs rather than install the latest Cumulative Updates, I also wrote about a workaround for the issue, as long as you do not require the Multiple Active Result Sets feature to be enabled. It is easy with Microsoft to get the feeling that you’re just shouting in the wind, and it is nice to get validation once in a while that they really are listening.

• Mouse and Keyboard Freeze

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 today and have had mouse problem since. Symptoms: At some arbitrary point in time (frequency: 2-3 times per hour), the mouse and keyboard stops working for ever(may be). I start System monitor, I found out network was shutdown just before mouse freeze. Some time my keyboard keep typing one key. For example:77777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777.....(it keep typing for 20 sec) I found out a script just solve the freeze problem:(I hit Powerbutton) -----------------/etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh------------------------ event=button[ /]power action=/usr/sbin/fix_mouse.sh -----------------/usr/sbin/fix_mouse.sh------------------------ rmmod psmouse modprobe psmouse Yesterday I install Ubuntu 10.04 FAILED also have mouse problem. When I switch back to Windows XP. The network card is down. It kept connecting and disconnecting 1 time per sec. • Setting the Default Wiki Page in a SharePoint Wiki Library

  I’ve seen a number of blog posts about setting the default homepage in a wiki library, and most of them offer ways of accomplishing this task through PowerShell or through SharePoint designer.  Although I have become an ever increasing fan of PowerShell, I still prefer to stay away from it unless I’m trying to do something fairly complicated or I need a script that I can run over and over again.  If all you need to do is set the default homepage in a wiki library, there is an easier way! First, navigate to the wiki page you want to use as the default homepage.  Then click the Page tab in the ribbon.  In the Page Actions group there is a button called Make Homepage.  Click it.  A confirmation displays informing you that you are about to change the homepage.  Click OK and you will have a new homepage for your wiki library.  No PowerShell required.

• SQL SERVER – Recover the Accidentally Renamed Table

  I have no answer to following question. I saw a desperate email marked as urgent delivered in my mailbox. “I accidentally renamed table in my SSMS. I was scrolling very fast and I made mistakes. It was either because I double clicked or clicked on F2 (shortcut key for renaming). However, I have made the mistake and now I have no idea how to fix this. I am in big trouble. Help me get my original tablename.” I have seen many similar scenarios in my life and they give me a very good opportunity to preach wisdom but when the house is burning, we cannot talk about how we should have conserved the water earlier. The goal at that point is to put off the fire as fast as we can. I decided to answer this email with my best knowledge. If you have renamed the table, I think you pretty much is out of luck. Here are few things which you can do which can give you idea about what your tablename can be if you are lucky. Method 1: (Not Recommended but try your luck) Check your naming convention of your system. I have often seen that many organizations name their index as IX_TableName_Colms or name their keys as FK_TableName1_TableName2_Cols. If your organization is following the same you can get the name from your table, you may refer your keys. Again, note that this is quite possible that your tablename was already renamed and your keys were not updated. This can easily lead you to select incorrect name. I think follow this if you are confident or move to the next method. Method 2: (Not Recommended but try your luck) This method is also based on your orgs naming convention. If you use the name of the table in any columnname (some organizations use tablename in their incremental identity column name), you can get that name from there. Method 3: (Not Recommended but try your luck) If you know where your table was used in your stored procedures, you can script your stored procedure and find the name of the table back. Method 4: (Try your luck) All the best organizations first create a data model of the schema and there is good chance that this table is used there, you should take your chances and refer original document. If your organization is good at managing docs or source code, you will get the name of the table back for sure. Method 5: (It WORKS but try on a development server) There is no sure way to get you the name of the table which you accidentally renamed however, there is one way which will work for sure. You need to take your latest full backup and restore it on your development server (remember not on production or where you have renamed this column). Now restore latest differential file of the full backup. Now restore all the log files one by one making sure that you are restoring before the point of time of you renamed the tablename. Now go to explore and this will give you the name of the table which you have renamed. If you are confident that the same table existed with the same name when the last full backup was made, you do not have to go to all the steps. You can just get the name of the table directly from last backup’s restore. Read the article about Backup Timeline. Wisdom: How can I miss to preach wisdom when I get the opportunity to do so? Here are a few points to remember. Use a different account to explore production environment. Do not use the same account which have all the rights and permissions all the time. Use the account which has read only permissions if there are no modification required. Use policy based management to prevent changes which are accidental. If there was policy of valid names, the accidental change of the table was not possible unless it was intentional delibarate changes. Have a proper auditing of the system in place. You can use DDL triggers but be careful with its usage (get it reviewed properly first). (Add your suggestion here) I guess Method 5 will work all the time (using point in time restore). Everything else is chance of luck and if you are lucky are bad – you will get further incorrect name. Now go back and read the first line of this blog. Out of five method four methods are just lucky guesses. The method 5 will work but again it is a lengthy process if the size of the database is huge or if you do not have full backup. • Programmers and tech email: Do you actually read all of them?

  Email Alerts, Blog /Forum updates, discussion subscriptions general programming/technology update emails that we often subscribe to.Do you actually read them ? or go direct to the source when you find time. often we might the mail of programmers filled with loads of unread subscription mail from technology they previously were following or worked on or things they wish to follow .some or a majority of these mail just keep on piling up . i personally have few updates that i wish i read but constantly avoid and keep of for latter and finally delete them in effort keep the in box clean. few questions come to mind regarding this Do you keep such mail in separate accounts? Do you read all the mail you have subscribed to? Do you ever unsubscribe to any such email if you aren't reading them? How much do you really value these email. Lastly do you keep your in box clean ? wish to deal with this in a better way.

• Custom Themes Introduced in Gmail

  As we all know, Google Team introduced a number of HD themes last November. Now they are giving us an option of customizing our own background. We can put in our own images, select from our Google+ photos or just paste any image URL. Or we can browse the Featured Photos section to find the image that we like. They are introducing custom themes with two options, Light and Dark. In the Featured tab, we can simply search for specific kind of pictures like “hdr scenery” or “bokeh wallpaper” and so on. We can easily maintain our personal or work accounts with different background images that suites the best. The company announced this information in their blog today.

• 2D tower defense - A bullet to an enemy

  I'm trying to find a good solution for a bullet to hit the enemy. The game is 2D tower defense, the tower is supposed to shoot a bullet and hit the enemy guaranteed. I tried this solution - http://blog.wolfire.com/2009/07/linear-algebra-for-game-developers-part-1/ The link mentioned to subtract the bullet's origin and the enemy as well (vector subtraction). I tried that but a bullet just follows around the enemy. float diffX = enemy.position.x - position.x; float diffY = enemy.position.y - position.y; velocity.x = diffX; velocity.y = diffY; position.add(velocity.x * deltaTime, velocity.y * deltaTime); I'm familiar with vectors but not sure what steps (vector math operations) to be done to get this solution working.

• 11.10 AMD64 alternate installer has broken packages?

  I'm installing Ubuntu 11.10 from the alternate install ISO because I need to use LVM. Unfortunately, at some point the installer fails because it can't install libpurple0 and ubuntu-desktop because they depend on libsasl2-modules but it's not installable somehow. It also has the same error for xserver-xorg-video-all but I think I could probably live without that one. Kind of annoying that this is broken, I'm guessing maybe if I had internet it would work but right now I'm on a campus network with a captive portal so I can't actually get a network connection without using a browser to log in. Just thought someone should know or maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm going to try installing 11.04 alternate and then upgrading I guess.

Plugin seems very good but I saw some ads which were not from ads networks which I was using. Now I have injected Google ads leaderboard at some place but I saw advertisement from this advertiser: http://www.adroll.com/about/privacy?utm_source=evidon&utm_medium=AdChoices&utm_campaign=privacy%2Bpolicy So I want to know whether ad injecting plugin is doing some trick or Google use ads from other networks too? • LIghtspark Playback Crashes [on hold]

  My introduction is for my personal health: I hate Flash and then HTMLs finally wil be the only standard around =)(/)$§%&$%$ I installed Lightspark from a repository. Butt no video playback in FF oder Chromium. In FF I usually get one of the following messages within the black playback box (I can't copy it) Cause: Unhandled action script exception Cause: args[0]&&args[0]->getClass && args[0]->getClass(isSubClass) Can't read more since the error message is bigger than the playback frame.
