• What is the difference between an Abstract Syntax Tree and a Concrete Syntax Tree?

  I've been reading a bit about how interpreters/compilers work, and one area where I'm getting confused is the difference between an AST and a CST. My understanding is that the parser makes a CST, hands it to the semantic analyzer which turns it into an AST. However, my understanding is that the semantic analyzer simply ensures that rules are followed. I don't really understand why it would actually make any changes to make it abstract rather than concrete. Is there something that I'm missing about the semantic analyzer, or is the difference between an AST and CST somewhat artificial?

• Kohana3 Route with Subdirectories in Controller Folder

  Hello everybody I'm using Kohana for so long, but the new Version is a litte bit other. My problem with an example: classes/ controller/ pages.php pages/ imprint.php I want to change my Route so, that if i call domain.tld/pages, the pages.php should called with action_index(). But if i call domain.tld/pages/imprint, pages/imprint.php should called with action_index() (and this should work too: pages/imprint/demo - action_demo() in pages/imprint.php) Tried this with bootstrap and http://kohanaframework.org/guide/api/Route this examples, but cant get it work. • Alpha transparent PNGs not displaying correctly in Mobile Safari

  I'm using some semi-transparent PNGs as background-images on various websites. These are usually something like a 1x1 image with a 30-percent opaque white layer. I've noticed that Mobile Safari does not display them correctly, giving them a darker/grayish tint. I've created a couple test pages to illustrate. View them both in your normal browser, and then on Mobile Safari, and you should see what I mean. This shows 11 red images of varying opacities on white: http://thecompleteworks.org/alpha-tests/index-red.html This shows 11 white images of varying opacities on blue: http://thecompleteworks.org/alpha-tests/index.html Is this a MobileSafari bug (I couldn't imagine so), or do I need to do something different, either to my pages or PNGs? After installing the GP10.0 while i run the GP Utility for server installation. In between installation i got the following error. I thought I may ask your for your ideas. assume I have very small set of numbers (integers), 4 or 8 elements, that need to be sorted, fast. what would be the best approach/algorithm? my approach was to use the max/min functions only. At this point it becomes somewhat hardware dependent , so let us assume Intel 64-bit processor with SSE3 . Thanks

• Upload large files in .NET

  I've done a good bit of research to find an upload component for .NET that I can use to upload large files, has a progress bar, and can resume the upload of large files. I've come across some components like AjaxUploader, SlickUpload, and PowUpload, to name a few. Each of these options cost money and only PowUpload does the resumable upload, but it does it with a java applet. I'm willing to pay for a component that does those things well, but if I could write it myself that would be best. I have two questions: Is it possible to resume a file upload on the client without using flash/java/Silverlight? Does anyone have some code or a link to an article that explains how to write a .NET HTTPHandler that will allow streaming upload and an ajax progress bar? • TextMate suddenly highlighting all text dark red...?

  I'm using TextMate on Snow Leopard, don't know much about how it works. After I hit an unknown keyboard shortcut, it suddenly decided to highlight almost all text in my Python files dark red - making all my Python virtually unreadable! I must have accidentally pressed a shortcut - but I've no idea what I did or how to turn it off, and can't find any relevant help in the manual or form. Even just 'turn off all highlighting' would do. Anyone know how to turn this highlighting off? Bit desperate!

• MSVC 2008 - Unresolved External errors with LIB but only with DLL, not with EXE project

  I have a DLL that I am trying to link with a libjpeg LIB using MSVC 2008 that is generating Unresolved External Symbol errors for the libjpeg functions. I also have a test project that links with the exact same libjpeg library file and links without error and runs fine too. I have triple-checked my LIB path and dependent LIBS list settings and literally copy and pasted them from the EXE project to the DLL project. I still get the errors. I do have the libjpeg include headers surrounded by extern "C" so it is not a name mangling issue and the unresolved external warnings show the "missing" libjpeg functions as undecorated (just a leading underscore and the @ sign parameter byte count suffix after each name). What could make the linker with the DLL project be unable to find the functions properly when the test EXE project has no trouble at all? I'm using the pre-compiled 32-bit static multi-threaded debug library which I downloaded from ClanLib. Thanks, Robert

  I want to write a compiler for a custom markup language, I want to get optimum performance and I also want to have a good scalable design. Multi-paradigm programming language (C++) is more suitable to implement modern design patterns, but I think that will degrade performance a little bit (think of RTTI for example) which more or less might make C a better choice. I wonder what is the best language (C, C++ or even objective C) if someone wants to create a modern compiler (in the sense of complying to modern software engineering principles as a software) that is fast, efficient, and well designed.

  My problem is actually a bit more complicated than just how to use AES in VB.NET, since what I'm really trying to do is use AES in VB.NET from within a Java application across JACOB. But for now, what I need to focus on is the AES implementation itself.   I am trying to get a nice Spinning Wheel working within my webapp; http://bit.ly/89oWud However, I keep receiving an error within Mobile Safari that the variable 'blabla' cannot be found. I have implemented both of these suggested solutions: 1# Change SpinningWheelCSS 2# Change JQTouch CSS, JS files, and add JQTouch wrapper to body Neither worked for me. I am trying to use the incredible Spinning Wheel by Cubiq.org. I'm likely doing something wrong, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is. Help is very much appreciated.

  Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

• MagicLibrary.dll 32bit convert for 64bit

  Hi Guys, I recently received an email about a guy who like to make my software compatible with 64Bit Windows 7 OS. I have 1 single problem though .. I have followed a steps regarding on compiling VS Solution/Project for 64bit. But when I start to to compile the solution for 64bit, this "Crownwood.Magic.Forms" (MagicLibrary.dll) doesn't work anymore. This is the compilation error message "Error 6 The type or namespace name 'Crownwood' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)" Please don't tell me I did not referenced the MagicLibrary.dll It's a bit of confusing because the MagicLibrary.dll is already in my reference list. I also remove and add it back. There was this CorFlags.exe but am not sure how to convert it to 64bit. "CorFlags MagicLibrary.dll /32BIT- /Force" did not work.. :( Please help. Thanks in advance - Jayson

I am looking to set up one for our print department, and you send it is really getting expensive. I've look into net2ftp.com but styling it, is a bit pain in the bumbum....Also, Uploadify is also an option but with my lack of PHP knowledge I can't make it to actually do what I want it to do. Let me know if you have buymp into and interesting tool like it.

  In Java, updating double and long variable may not be atomic, as double/long are being treated as two separate 32 bits variables. http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/second_edition/html/memory.doc.html#28733 In C++, if I am using 32 bit Intel Processor + Microsoft Visual C++ compiler, is updating double (8 byte) operation atomic? I cannot find much specification mention on this behavior. When I say "atomic variable", here is what I mean : Thread A trying to write 1 to variable x. Thread B trying to write 2 to variable x. We shall get value 1 or 2 out from variable x, but not an undefined value.

  Hi , I am looking at validation of some text boxes for somethings like required, minlength, max length, email etc... I am able to get examples that work fine on submit button on page. I want to do this validation on a button click which will only raise a ajax request and not submit of page. On internet all the sample is found was with submit button. Is there a easy way to change this code a little bit o make it work for non submit button click or any new jquery or java plugin to do the same. I am using the jquery.validation.js for now. This works with submit buttons. Any kind of help with suggestion or help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am no stats wonk, so maybe it makes sense that a LOESS function’s output would match the input as seen in the above example, but it strikes me as being wrong. • Converting Oracle date arithmetic to work in HSQLDB

  I'm trying to spot-test an Oracle backed database with hsqldb and dbunit, but I've run into a snag. The problem is with the following EJB-QL (simplified a bit): SELECT o FROM Offer o WHERE :nowTime BETWEEN o.startDate AND o.startDate + 7 This seems to only work in Oracle's version of SQL. What's the easiest way for me to convert this to work in both hsqldb and oracle? Assume that changing the two between arguments to named parameters is a very difficult refactor, so I'm going to favor answers that provides a more standardized analog to o.startdate + 7 EDIT: After doing some more research, it looks like Oracle converts the above snippet to o.startdate + INTERVAL '7' DAY which is apparently more standard, but doesn't work in HSQLDB.

Is there any difference in terms of visibility/usability between a public member declared in an internal class and an internal member declared in an internal class? i.e. between internal class Foo { public void Bar() { } } and internal class Foo { internal void Bar() { } } If you declared the method as public and also virtual, and then overrode it in a derived class that is public, the reason for using this modifier is clear. However, is this the only situation... am I missing something else?

• Question on Pointer Arithmetic

  Heyy Everybody! I am trying to create a memory management system, so that a user can call myMalloc, a method I created. I have a linked list keeping track of my free memory. My problem is when I am attempting to find the end of a free bit in my linked list. I am attempting to add the size of the memory free in that section (which is in the linked list) to the pointer to the front of the free space, like this. void *tailEnd = previousPlace->head_ptr + ((previousPlace->size+1)*(sizeof(int)); I was hoping that this would give me a pointer to the end of that segment. However, I keep getting the warning: "pointer of type 'void*' used in arithmetic" Is there a better way of doing this? Thanks!

• Trouble parsing NMEA data from Serial Port.

  I'm retrieving NMEA sentences from a serial GPS. Then string are coming across like I would expect. The problem is that when parsing a sentence like this: $GPRMC,040302.663,A,3939.7,N,10506.6,W,0.27,358.86,200804,,*1A I use a simple bit of code to make sure I have the right sentect: string[] Words = sBuffer.Split(','); foreach (string item in Words) { if (item == "$GPRMC") { return "Correct Sentence"; } else { return "Incorrect Sentence } } I added the return in that location for the example. I have printed the split results to a text box and have seen that $GPRMC is indeed coming across in the item variable at some point. If the string is coming across why won't the if statement catch? Is is the $? How can I trouble shoot this?

• Java simple encryption

  Hello, I would like to encrypt a textual (configuration) file stored on disk. Trying to use DES encryption I've had fatal error on client machines, I later found out caused because the algorithm could not handle accented characters (!) I suspect that was because I was using old packages (sun.misc.BASE64Decoder) - but I'm not sure that is the reason. However, I'm looking for a simpler solution - I need a really simple encryption (I know some people would not agree on that) - not RSA of 128 bit keys or so, just obscuring the text from curious eyes. It is really weird that I could not find on the web a simple trivial solution. Any idea, anyone ? Thanks, Ran

  Hi, Im new to android and am just trying to install the SDK. I have everything else done. When i run the SDK Setup.exe (ive added the ./tools to the path already.) It gives me the famous cannot fetch URL error. Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml, reason: Permission denied: connect I tried the force http option and also manually adding a http:// version of the above url. It does not work at all. I am working on a windows 7 64 bit pc. Any help would be appreciated. Ramesh

Here is what I have: Visual Studio 2008 (on 32-bit Windows XP) Qt libraries 4.6.2 for Windows (VS 2008, 194 MB) Visual Studio Add-in (44 MB) After I installed all the software, I created simple Qt Application project, with Visual Studio: menu File | New | Project... and Qt4 Projects | Qt Application. Build it, and here is the question: how to set application icon to my compiled exe file? I need to see specified ICO in explorer! Old method with MyProject.pro not interested!!! Create a .ico file with both 16x16 and 32x32-pixel versions of the icon (you can do this in Visual Studio). Create a .rc file containing the following text: IDI_ICON1 ICON DISCARDABLE "myIcon.ico" Add the following to your .pro file RC_FILE = myFile.rc Run qmake. Thanks.
