  Using the ODAC (Oracle Data Access Components) downloaded from Oracle to talk to a handfull of Oracle DBs - Was putting together my DAL to update the DB, and things weren't working as I hoped - UPDATE foo SET bar = :P_BAR WHERE bap = :P_BAP I assign my parameters - objCmd.Parameters.Add(objBap); objCmd.Parameters.Add(objBar);   Execute update command - int result = objCmd.ExecuteNonQuery() and result is zero! ...  Is my filter incorrect? SELECT count(*) FROM foo WHERE bap = :P_BAP ...result is one... Is my new value incorrect?  Am I using Char instead of Varchar somewhere and need an RTRIM?  Is there a transaction getting involved?  An error thrown and not caught? The answer: Order of parameters.   The order parameters are added to the Oracle Command object must match the order the parameters are referenced in the SQL statement.  I was adding the parameters for the WHERE clause before adding the SET value parameters, and for that reason although no error was being thrown, no value was updated either. Flip parameter collection around to match order of params in the SQL statement, and ExecuteNonQuery() is back to returning the number of rows affected.

  I have two plain text files, each file is containing a list of strings sorted alphabetically with one string per line. I want to diff the files and have an output of all strings that exist only in file2. Preferabbly I want the operation to be possible without any 3rd party tools, or with a minimum of installations of tools that is "normal" to find in a windows command line environment, such as GNU Diffutils, Powershell, etc. The output should be in text form (file or as command line output).   I'm trying to change it with the setclass console command Based on the UESP wiki it looks like it just governs stat gain for leveling, but based on the Elder Scrolls wiki it seems to only control their combat AI. Obviously it does at least one or both of those - what does it actually do, and does it do anything else? __ Ex: if change Lydia from warrior1handed to vigilantcombat1h with the console command 000A2C94.setclass 0010bfef will it have any unintended side effects that aren't immediately apparent other than letting her use the alteration and healing spells I just gave her with console and setting her stats in a way that works for that? Will it do something weird like mess with her factions or ability to join as my follower? Or mess with her health scaling as she levels? Something hard to notice until alot of time went by? @desaivv* I was trying to do it with 000A2C94.setclass 0010bfef wasn't sure if it'd cause hidden issues only showing after hours of play or if i made a new character with the same bat file. but the creation kit sounds like an idea too, i'll have to see how complicated it is. it might just show what it'd do or have some easier way to change her behavior to add spells. I'll try it and see if anything obvious shows up short term just wasn't sure if it had known long term problems

• Bash script runs fine, but not in cron

  I have a script that's supposed to record a shoutcast stream for an hour, convert it to mp3, and then save it. The script runs correctly when I run it from the terminal, but I can't seem to get it to run in cron (where it should run every hour at the top of the hour). • Leveraging .Net 4.0 Framework Tools For Encrypting Web Configuration Sections

  I would like to share a few points with regards to encrypting web configuration sections in .Net 4.0. This information is also applicable to .Net 3.5 and 2.0. Two methods can work perfectly for encrypting connection strings in a Web project configuration file:   1-Do It All Yourself! In this approach, helper functions for encrypting/decrypting configuration file content are implemented. Program would explicitly retrieve appropriate content from configuration file then decrypt it appropriately.  Disadvantages of this implementation would be the added overhead for maintaining the encryption/decryption code as well the burden of always ensuring sections are appropriately decrypted before use and encrypted appropriately whenever edited.   2- Leverage the .Net 4.0 Framework (The Way to go!) Fortunately, all needed tools for protecting configuration files are built-in to the .Net 2.0/3.5/4.0 versions with very little setup needed. To encrypt connection strings, one can use the ASP.Net IIS Registration Tool (Aspnet_regiis.exe). Note that a 64-bit version of the tool also exists under the Framework64 folder for 64-bit systems. The command we need to encrypt our web.config file connection strings is simply the following:   Aspnet_regiis –pe “connectionstrings” –app “/sampleApplication” –prov “RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider”   To later decrypt this configuration section:   Aspnet_regiis –pd “connectionstrings” –app “/SampleApplication”   The following is a brief description of the command line options used in the example above. Aspnet_regiis supports many more options which you can read about in the links provided for reference below.   Option Description -pe  Section name to encrypt -pd  Section name to decrypt -app  Web application name -prov  Encryption/Decryption provider   ASP.Net automatically decrypts the content of the Web.Config file at runtime so no programming changes are needed.   Another tool, aspnet_setreg.exe is to be used if certain configuration file sections pertinent to the .Net runtime are to be encrypted.   Recently, I noticed traffic from the office network to TCP port 445 on the Internet [a]. Below are the Linux firewall log entries to Facebook's network [b] and Google's network [c]. I would like to identify the source of this traffic. My first guess is that Facebook and Google might be using multiple TCP ports for SSL load balancing. However, I could not confirm this based on the web proxy logs. What else might it be?   I read the manual page of the "mount" command, at it reads as below: All files accessible in a Unix system are arranged in one big tree, the file hierarchy, rooted at /. These files can be spread out over several devices. The mount command serves to attach the file system found on some device to the big file tree. My questions are: Where is this "big tree" located? Suppose I have 2 disks, if I mount them onto some point in the "big tree", does linux place some "special marks" in the mount point to indicate that these 2 "mount directories" are indeed seperate disks?

  I am trying to create and install a debain NAS and ive been having a hard time because I am new to all of this. I used ntfs-3g in order to automount my 4 NTFS drives. I also have a partitioned harddrive which is for the OS. When I was working on it and I ran this command I got this: fdisk -l /dev/sdae1 fdisk -l | grep NTFS /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 The weird thing is, all of the NTFS harddrives listed had an ID of 7. The next time I boot up my machine, I get an error about mounting /dev/sda1 and I run this command, and get the following results: fdisk -l | grep NTFS /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1 I havent plugged in any drives, so whats going on? How to I make sure that my drives are mounted with the same sdXX name every time, and is the reason for this because they dont have unique ID numbers, if so, how do I solve this?

• Remove Audio stream from XVID files

  I have a bunch of Xvid files that each have an audio stream that I do not want. How can I strip the audio track I don't want using the Linux command line? I don't need the whole script (loop), just what command I would use to process each avi file individually (unless the cmd itself has batch modification built into it). I don't believe the file is in an mkv container, as mkvinfo doesn't find anything. • Using Supervisord, how can I start a brand new worker via supervisorctl without restarting other workers?

  Let's say I have a number of existing workers running in supervisord. I want to add a new worker to the group as well as start the new worker. I perform the following steps: I modify the file /etc/supervisor/supervisord.conf and add the new worker config Back on the command line, I enter sudo supervisorctl I run reread to read the new configuration file settings. Attempting to run start workers:exampleWorkerName gives the error workers:"exampleWorkerName": ERROR (no such process) So, my question is, how can I start this new worker process without affecting my other existing workers? I'd rather not perform a supervisorctl reload or /etc/init.d/supervisord restart command.

  TL;DR: sudo apt-get install ... saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." The problem I was trying to get the WebApps feature for PP and QQ following this blog post. I ran the sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webapps/preview command to add the repository, but i got a connection error. Since I know my current ISP gives a shaky connection, I tried again and sure enough, it worked. Then I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview, but I realized we had to update apt-get first, so I hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Then I ran sudo apt-get update which worked w/o a fuss, but when I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview again later, it showed an error message. Here's the dump: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: unity-webapps-preview : Depends: xul-ext-unity but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-websites-integration but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-webaccounts but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I think this might be because of me interrupting the earlier command. It hadn't got a chance to output anything, though — I stopped it pretty fast. What I tried I have tried running a number of commands:- sudo apt-get install --fix-broken sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get -f install sudoapt-get install ppa-purgeandsudo ppa-purge ppa:webapps/preview` Even after running sudo apt-get upgrade after every try, none of them worked. But, after 15 months looking for work, I am still with out a JOB. What is wrong here or with me? Let’s see, hard worker (check), self motivated to do well on a Job (Check), Certified CompTIA A+, Security+  and Network+ Technician (Check), 20 + years experience in “IT” (CHECK), in good health, in 20 years of work only 15 days off due to health issues (Check), 18 years experience as technical Help Desk support (Check), can still work better than younger personal (Check), Strong trouble shooting skills for software, computer hard ware and circuit issues (Check) and Multiple software languages (Hey I have done some programming) Check. Hmm I don’t see any problem with me (of course I could have missed something, please let me know if you see what I am missing).    Now as to what have I been up to since I last blogged. The same things of course, Job hunting, job hunting and study.   I have set up sim of my home LAN and will be adding a wireless print server to the sim and in real life, soon.  I was able to pull up and copy the examples of Cisco router commands that I had on my old lap top, to my newer PC. Every time I used a new command while working the NOC on my last job.   I would cut and past a copy of the command on the router (and what it did) I was working on.  Along with notes on the problem and commands use for same router. I used these to make documentation for on how to handle these types of issues, for the other Operation Techs. My old notes are helping me in studying for the CCENT test.    As to Love Dare, I think it will take more like 40 weeks, than the 40 days of the book. Yes I am making progress, slow but, it is progress. I will have more on that in my next blog.

• Personalisation of the Ubuntu interface

  It's quite hard to phrase this question as the answer is very subjective and I don't know the right terminology to ask for what I want, but I will try my best. I love linux and would love to use it full-time as my main OS but the one think I have a problem with is the look of it. In my opinion it looks like it was designed for a child and I like my computer to look stylish rather than dated (this is opinion obviously). I like the look of OSX but there are certain things that I don't like, so no, I am not asking the age old question of "how do I make ubunutu look like OSX"...most of the attempts I have seen of this have been pretty poor when put up against the real thing so I just want to take certain things from it. Things I'd like to take from OSX: Spotlight (I don't like the Unity dashboard-esque thingy) Expose Spaces Dock (at the bottom) Icons (apart from the apple one) Look of file manager - its more pleasant to navigate around the file system. Closing an application window doesn't actually quit the program, so when you next launch it - it is instantaneous. Global menu (at the top) What are the latest Ubuntu alternatives to these? When it comes to actually changing the look of Ubuntu what should I be looking at? I know the following exists: Shell theme Icons Fonts ...but is there anything else I need to look into to actually change the look? I hear the term "Window Manager" thrown around, but I don't actually know what that is. What are good sources for reviews/links to the latest and greatest customisation techniques? Ubuntu now comes with Unity which I don't like very much. What are my alternatives? Should I look into Gnome3 or switch to classic desktop which is Gnome2 if I recall correctly? I hope I haven't put too much in one question and that it makes sense. Thanks.

• Many commands are not found by zsh

  If I tab autocomplete, most of the time I get errors. Let's say I do a vim tab to look for the files in the folder. It just jumps to the next command line. Or let's say I press tab after typing rvm use 2.0.0 --default I will get zsh: correct 'rvm' to 'rvim' [nyae]?. If I say no, I get a command not found error. Also if I press tab after typing ruby -v, zsh wants to correct to _ruby -v. Any known bug or any help for this?

• If ssh connection fails using SOCKS then what? Automate switch to no proxy?

  Right now I am using plink in a batch routine that reconnects to my SSH server if I loose connection. I use my plink connection & socks proxy (firefox) to forward all my browser traffic. Works great EXCEPT for one thing! If I can't get to my ssh server for some ODD reason I have to go to options in firefox and revert back my settings to NO Proxy. It can be done, but its annoying! So how would I keep my SOCKS Proxy connection in firefox, but if I cant connect to my SSH Server, how can I automatically switch to the autodetect proxy/no proxy settings in firefox? I would think that I could use the Firefox command line arguments and a batch routine to do so, but I do not believe this is possible.   BOOTMGR IS MISSING PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART Note: This is a VM on VMWare ESX server, but that should not matter I put in the 2008 R2 x64 install dvd and can get to recovery, but it lists no Operating Systems.   I am facing difficulty in installing my USB modem in Ubuntu 13.10. Contrary to what many have suggested,it does not get detected automatically, nor does setting a new connection help. USB Device is listed in lsusb, but not under network manager or Devices, it is detected as a CD-ROM, what I understood from the web was that usb-modeswitch can be used to switch it to a USB device. Even 'Enable Mobile Broadband' option is not shown in network manager. What was interesting is when I start laptop with windows 7 and use the USB modem and after that restart with Ubuntu, both Enable Broadband and the mobile broadband connection can be seen. Sadly, internet connection could not be installed. I tried using USB-modeswitch command as suggested somewhere, but it does not seem to work. Following is the message. • Kerberos: Running an app with a parameter using krenew

  I need to run an application with krenew, but the application also needs to receive a parameter via command line and I need to send its output to a file. From the documentation, it looks like this should do the trick: krenew -t -- sh -c 'compute-job > /afs/local/data/output' but, unfortunately, when I run the command below: krenew -s -- sh -c './my_app config.xml > results/test.txt &' the application just dies after a while and I can see from the output of ps aux that krenew is not running along with my_app. I am not sure what the parameter -t does, and as far as I can see, if I run krenew -s ./my_app, it works properly. I hope someone can clarify this.

• WiFi: Connect to a network with hidden SSID in Windows 7

  I have Windows 7 with the following station: D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Dual Band USB Adapter(rev.A2) (driver version 3.5.0.21). I'm trying to connect to a wireless network that has an hidden SSID with the command: Netsh wlan connect name="myNetworkProfile" The profile is configured to connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID). Despite that, the command fails promptly every time with the message: The network specified by profile "myNetworkProfile" is not available to connect. Nonetheless, when trying to connect manually using the dialog box (see image below), it successfully connects to the network after about 10 or 15 seconds. Also, Please - no need to elaborate about how useless the hidden SSID feature is.

• Visual Studio 2010 editor painfully slow [closed]

  I'm running out of patience with MS VisualStudio 2010: I'm working on a solution containing ~50 C++ projects. When using the editor, I experience a lag of 1 - 2 seconds whenever I move the cursor to a different line, or when I move to a different window, or generally when the editor losses and gains focus. I went through a whole series of optimizations, to no avail: installed all hotfixes for VS2010 disabled all add-ins and extensions disabled Intellisense deleted all temporary files created by VS2010 disabled hardware acceleration unloaded all but 15 projects disabled tracking changes closed all but one window and so on. This is on a Dual Core machine with SSD harddrive (verified throughput 100MB/s), enough free space on HD, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit with 3GB of RAM and most of it still free. Whenever I type a letter, CPU usage of devenv.exe goes to 50 - 90% in process monitor for 1 - 2 seconds before returning to 5%. I used Process Explorer to analyze registry and file system access, and I only notice frequent accesses to the .sln file (which is quiet small), and a few registry reads, but nothing that would raise a red flag. I don't have this problem with solutions containing less projects, so I'm inclined to think that it's related to the number of projects. For your information, the entire solution has been migrated over the years from VS2005 to VS2008 to now VS2010. Does anyone have any ideas what else I could do to resume work on this project, other than returning to VS2008?

[email protected]'s password: The pem file is definitely located at the path ~/.ssh/myfile.pem, though: vi ~/.ssh/myfile.pem shows me the file. If I remove the remote path from the very end of the rsync command: rsync -Paz --rsh "ssh -i ~/.ssh/myfile.pem" --rsync-path "sudo rsync" file.pdf [email protected] Then the command appears to work... building file list ... 1 file to consider file.pdf 41985 100% 8.79MB/s 0:00:00 (xfer#1, to-check=0/1) sent 41795 bytes received 42 bytes 83674.00 bytes/sec total size is 41985 speedup is 1.00 ...but when I go to the remote server, nothing has actually been transferred. What am I doing wrong?

  I am a latinoamerican so.. sorry for my english I am trying to install ubuntu on my new pc but I have serious problems. When I put the installation cd and it runs, everything goes fine until that "window" when the user have to decide if want to try ubuntu or install it on the machine.. well that "window" apears in blank, and I see that my mouse and my keyboard turn really slowly and I can't do anything I have to shut it down by pressing power botton. The specification of my pc are this Gigabyte ex58 ud7 i7 950 wester digital caviar black 6gb memory corsair evga gtx580 Please i really neeed to install ubuntu or another linux distrubution, i am usign de sismic unix program on my laptop and well. it burns when i program a script! help! please :) what can i do..? what i have to download? i am not a pro in linux so please :( be pattient with me when it starts to load the achieve ubuntu environment to enter a menu with a graphical environment but I managed to get something sturdy and gave him to try ubuntu, started to load but freezes on the sign of ubuntu with red spots and only shows me the pointer not more ..... any other option? ps: had previously tried to install the alternate version of ubuntu not having success: S

• Gnome shell not starting at login, but can start from terminal (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 recently and for some reason it broke Gnome 3. The shell doesn't start up at login. My .xsession-errors looks like this right after I log in: gnome-session[1689]: WARNING: Session 'gnome' runnable check failed: Timed out (gnome-settings-daemon:1744): color-plugin-WARNING **: failed to get edid: unable to get EDID for output (gnome-settings-daemon:1744): color-plugin-WARNING **: unable to get EDID for xrandr-default: unable to get EDID for output (gnome-settings-daemon:1744): color-plugin-WARNING **: failed to reset xrandr-default gamma tables: gamma size is zero ** Message: applet now removed from the notification area ** Message: using fallback from indicator to GtkStatusIcon ** Message: moving back from GtkStatusIcon to indicator Then I can run gnome-shell --replace, the shell starts up and everything works. If you are unsure, check with your distribution Also, if I run /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p, everything comes back as Yes and this checks out: OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 8300 GS/PCIe/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 295.40 It isn't a huge problem since I can get gnome shell to work, but it is a little annoying. So, I'd like to fix this. Thanks for your help.
