• Unresponsive Script window pops up all the time now. Why and what to do?

  I don't know that it's for the exact same script each time, it may be. A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://messenger/content/folderPane.js:721 This is in association with Thunderbird I think. This doesn't just happen after I've stepped away for a long time. It happens every time I click on anything. Things keep running that I'm clicking on. Just before this started as a constant problem, I was looking at addons etc, and something in Thunderbird deactivated an old or expired JavaScript. I clicked on the update for that and after a while I found the best choice on the list and clicked download. I don't know that anything happened with that and I moved away from addons etc area. The unresponsive script window started coming back all the time. Every time I clicked on something in Thunderbird and sometimes with Firefox. I turned off Firefox and restarted, but it didn't change. Shut down Firefox and computer restarted didn't change. The unresponsive script window is persistent now.

  Rather than having all of my computers go out to the internet and download their Automatic Updates, I am seriously considering building a WSUS server. That is, a Windows Update server. I have read some articles, and they have been helpful, but not complete. The following is what I have gleaned are the steps I need to take: Commission a computer to be the server with Windows 2003 Server. Install the WSUS package(s) and select the type of updates to check for. Configure the rest of my computers to be clients of this server. Set the clients to receive updates from the server. My questions are as follows: Does the server have to run Windows 2003 Server, or will Windows XP Professional work? Where do I download the WSUS packages from? How can I configure my computers to look for updates from my server instead of the internet? Thanks!!

• How can I figure out exactly which process is keeping my Mac from going to sleep and waking it up?

  I have read this knowledgebase article, but would like to know if there's a way to tell exactly which process is causing my Mac not to follow the sleep schedule I have set in System Preferences Energy Saver. I have narrowed it down to a being a process and will explain why I think so (see below). I am running OS X (10.6.5) on the new iMac 27" and I am certain it's not the following: The "Wake for Network Access" checkbox in Energy Saver settings (has never been a previous issue) Peripherals (has never been a previous issue) Any active GUI application (all are closed) Additional USB/FireWire drives (none are connected) Bluetooth (it's off) Sharing services (has never been a previous issue) The symptoms are as follows: The computer doesn't go to sleep at the predetermined time. It will wake up some number of hours after being put manually to sleep (but not within the first few seconds/minutes.) Is there a specific string I should be looking for in Console? I have tried searching for "wake" and "sleep" but can't make total sense of the results.

• Which converting format of Calibre will keep a MOBI ebook's formatting together?

  I've got a MOBI/Kindle book and I want to convert it to a format that's easy to markup, make notes etc. but when I try to convert to TXT or PDF the result is awful. Are any of the other formats in Calibre's conversion options easily opened on any computer; any of the other formats offered by Calibre fare better after a MOBI conversion? On a side note, are there other programs that will convert a MOBI book better than Calibre? One that will keep the formatting... Win 7. IE 9.

I need: Dynamic DNS Firewall + port-forwarding VPN Wake-on-LAN from outside firewall VOIP would be nice QoS would be nice (make torrents take lower priority to other services when those other services are happening) DHCP Wireless + WPA2 security Ability to play multiplayer computer games I am not a networking or computing neophyte, but the last time I messed with network gear was a few years ago, so am needing to dust off knowledge I kinda half have. I have read that I should be wanting to set up the AM200 in half-bridge mode, so that the WRT54GL gets the WAN IP - this sounds like a good idea, but I'd still like to be advised. I have read that the dd-wrt firmware will meet my needs (though I gather I'll need the vpn-specific build, which appears to preclude supporting VOIP), but I'm not wedded to using it.   Last night, (Tuesday, June 28), at the KC .NET User group meeting, George Westwater gave a terrific presentation on NoSQL. The best way to define it (the best way is to see George explain it, and he says he will record his presentation and make it available through his blog – link above)  is databases  that does not use relational technology. And his point, and this is true – I have been around awhile – is that non-relational databases have been used for over 50 years in the business. He points out that Wall Street firms have been using non-relational technology ever since they started using computers. IBM still fully supports IMS, now in version 11 (12 is in beta), because these firms are still using this product and will continue to do so for a long time. Of course, like a lot of computer business technology, there are a lot of new NoSQL products available these days, simply as a reaction to the problems of scaling relational databases for internet use. As a result, it almost looks as though NoSQL is something new. And there are a lot, I mean a LOT, I mean a L-O-T , of new products out there for this technology. The best resource to cover all of these products is http://nosql-database.org/, which has a huge listing of what is available. My interest in the subject is primarily due to my interest in Windows Azure and the fact that Windows Azure storage is all non-relational, even the table storage. It is very fascinating and most of all, far cheaper than using SQL Azure for storage in the “cloud."

• What are the requirements to test a website using jquery.get() ? [migrated]

  I am working on a simple website. It has to search quite a few text files in different sub-folders. The rest of the page uses jquery, so I would like to use it for this also. The function I am looking at is .get() for downloading the files. So my main question is, can I test this on my local computer (Ubuntu Linux) or do I have to have it uploaded to a server? Also, if there's a better way to go about this, that would be nice to know. However, I'm more worried about getting it working.   hi im not sure if this is the right place to ask but, i just build a new desktop for gaming. i3 530 2.93 GHz P7H55-M/USB3 Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600MHz iGame Gtx 460 Win 7 32bit Huntkey X7 900W Everytime i start the computer it would run normally until the windows loading and will just stuck and hit the blue screen.i tried everypossible way to repair,restore the windows but nutin seems to be working. I'm not sure if its compatibility problem or Bios or even Ram,since the beep is a normal beep and will only blue screen when loading the windows. if anyone can help me id appriciate it. thx

• nautilus crash when merging/overwriting files

  On my Ubuntu 10.10, whenever I want to copy some files/folders over some other files/folders, or when I try to empty the trash, nautilus crashes! Example: I have a folder with some files. Now I want to overwrite this folder with a folder with the same name, same files, but some additional files, the merge window comes up, I choose merge and nautilus crashes (does not respond, when I press the close button I can force close it). Some times it even does the copying/emptying (trash), but it always crashes! This happens when copying to the same partition/ntfs partition/netshares, but not when I make a new folder and copy the files/folders into that (without overwriting anything). On a netshare, it's even possible to merge these files afterwards with another computer! dmesg/syslog/messages does not show any entry related to that problem. Does anyone have a solution for this very annoying problem? EDIT: dpkg -l nautilus* (see output in pastebin) EDIT2: I found out, nautilus already crashes before clicking replace/merge (as soon as the question appeares. In the video it's not entirely clear, that i click the cross before the force-close dialog appeares. • Signed and unsigned, and how bit extension works

  unsigned short s; s = 0xffff; int i = s; How does the extension work here? 2 larger order bytes are added, but I'm confused whether 1's or 0's are extended there. This is probably platform dependent so let's focus on what Unix does. Would the two bigger order bytes of the int be filled with 1's or 0's, and why? Basically, does the computer know that s is unsigned, and correctly assign 0's to the higher order bits of the int? So i is now 0x0000ffff? Or since ints are default signed in unix does it take the signed bit from s (a 1) and copy that to the higher order bytes?

• problem getting scanning to work on epson workforce 610

  i installed the latest epson software on my user's computer. everything works fine from the admin account (printing / scanning). yet, when i go to user's account (the standard user mode account the company employee uses on there machine) and launch the epson scan software or scan settings software it times out and puts up a dialog box asking me if i want to use the trouble assistant. my question is why would this all work in the admin account yet not work in the user mode account? any help is greatly appreciated.

• Is there a way to identify the device data is being received from? (python)

  Summary I have an MT4000 device connected to my computer using the serial port ttyS0. This is broadcasting data which is being received and read by a udp listener written in Python. I am also sending data manually through the terminal using a bash script I wrote. The Goal Is it possible to identify the device being used? The aim is for a web-page to allow the user to select which device they wish to see the data being sent. I would rather achieve this by directly identifying the device rather than saying anything from ttyS0, in case a different device is plugged in on that port. The Answer Is this possible, and if so, how? Everything I have found so far, is on identifying through a specific port.

  I am not that good with programmation, but I guess you are. we are planning to install 2 display monitor in the back of the other one. There will be 1 computer that will display a different application on each display monitor. I want to be able to switch display 1 to 2 and display 2 to display 1 to show what is on the other monitor without having to move themselve on the back of the monitor to see the opposite monitor. I need a script that will switch display every x times. How can I do that ?

• Can I change the system's "Browse for Folder" dialog globally?

  As far as I know, everyone hates the "Browse for Folder" dialog: This dialog is always too small, rarely remembers locations well, and worst of all: forces you to navigate your entire computer using a tedious tree structure. Now, to be fair, some of the problems are likely to do with how apps are invoking the control -- not setting a size or a default directory, etc. But the problem about the tedious tree control remains. Is there any way to customize your Windows installation to use a different control? Preferably an app/installer that does it for you safely, but dropping in a compatible DLL or similar technique would be okay too. Or are we stuck with this terrible control forever?

• Is the 4-pin PSU connector required? (Trying to connect a PSU to a mini case.)

  I am trying to build a computer, placing an ASUS P8H67-I DELUXE in a custom retro C64 case. The case is an extra small form factor which can accomodate the Mini ITX board, but requires an external power supply, similar to the power-bricks that laptops use. I am looking at different power supplies and like these, but cannot figure out whether/how to power this system because they provide a 24-pin connector, but the motherboard has a 4-pin connector as well. Is the 4-pin connector optional or is it required? If it is required, how can I provide power for this system?

• suddenly can't connect to windows 7 pc from xbmc

  I have xbmc installed on a softmodded classic xbox and all of a sudden I cannot connect to the shared folders on my windows 7 PC. Well, it can connect but it wants a username and password, but none exist on my computer. It's been several weeks since I last used it, but it was working fine then! and no particular changes I can think of aside from I guess a few windows updates. I've seen reference online to windows live essentials causing issues with file sharing, but I don't even have that installed. And I made sure to tick 'turn off password protected sharing' in my advanced network setup. I had the guest account turned off and working fine before, and tried turning it on but no luck. I can access my shared folders fine from other Computers and a ps3. I've read a couple threads of similar situations on various folders and none of their solutions have worked.

• Scheduled task based on Microsoft patch release cycle

  I have a simple powershell script which unapproves all patches based on computer group name in WSUS which works great. All of our servers patch on a specific Day/Week/Time starting on Week0-Wednesday which would be the Wednesday after Microsoft Patch Tuesday (2nd Tuesday of every month) all the way to Week3-Sunday. This obviously causes problems as sometimes not all patches get applied in one reboot cycle, and then will install patches the following week during their group policy scheduled patching day/time which is what I'm trying to prevent. My question is I'm trying to schedule my script to run based on this schedule and I am finding it next to impossible using Windows Task Scheduler. For instance if I wanted something to always run on the 4th Monday after Microsoft Patch Tuesday, I cant always use the task scheduler option "4th Monday of the Month" Has anyone run into a similar situation, or know of any task scheduling tools which give you more flexibility than Windows Task Scheduler?

• Remote desktop session ends abruptly with a "protocol error"

  Intermittently we get a problem where a remote desktop session will get disconnected with the error message “Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.” We are getting this with one server only which is running Windows Server 2008, connecting with Windows 7 clients. The session itself stays running, you just get disconnected, and you can try and reconnect. Sometimes you get in for a while then it will kick you out. We are connecting from Windows 7 clients. We have tried connecting using Cord on a Mac and this works fine, so it's not like the session itself is corrupted. One problem is that there are some critical applications running under the session (I know, let's not discuss the idiocy of that), so we cannot reset the session in any way during the working day – so any diagnostics must have minimum impact. • How can I make myself better at programming working at a shi* job ?

  I recently graduated with an Engineering degree in Computer Science, but my employer (a mid-sized software company) is not using my logical and programming skills. I want to move to a better opportunity but how do I do that since my experience here is not going to count as much? How do I get a better programming job? The worst part is that I am still reading from books (and not writing code myself) even after I have started working. They are paying me a standard entry level Indian IT job rate but I really dont care. It's not worth it. Please advise as to how I can do something worthwhile. (I have studied C++; Core Java; Ruby On Rails ..made a couple of academic projects but no relevant practical real world experience). Just to make things easier .. let me list a few basic queries How I get better at programming without a good project at my company? Please suggest projects where I can learn to write practical code (platform doesn't matter) Best place to take part in open source development? Is it possible that I earn slightly more while I learn? (apart from my sh** job I mean) What kind of practical projects are best suited for me? (ie for an entry level programmer)

• Cisco 1841 Box and Watchguard XTM21-W

  I have never set one of these up before and need a little assistance. Right now we have a T1 line coming in from Sprint to a Cisco 1841 and then on to our router. However, when I plug the Cisco 1841 into Port 0 and the router into Port 3 it does not work. In Port 1 I have my management computer plugged in. We have one subnet and this must be easy but I cannot figure out how to make this work. When the firewall is plugged in then I get no internet or network access.
