• SSAS Compare version 1.0 released

• Making Multilingual J! 1.5 + + Joomfish + VM 1.17 more workable

  I have been working with a multilingual Joomla! 1.5.23 e-commerce website for a client for quite a while and made several customizations. But the client is still not happy he has to adjust content at at least three locations: Joomfish Virtuemart Article Manager Joomfish is nice in the way that it allows you to create multilingual content and copy and paste the source language on the same page, which makes translation work easier but it is annoying in the way you have to edit several custom fields at different locations/ content types. As Joomla! source language content still needs to be created in the article manager first this is the second location the client has to work at. The third location is Virtuemart. Here all the products and product categories are created. And here we added some custom fields as well. Now I was considering upgrading the website to Joomla 1.7 or later on to 1.8. This J! versions have better multilingual support. But I wonder if er can really make the client's life easier. We will still have to copy the source language to a new article and create content in another language. We will still have the issue of content in custom fields that needs to be translated and we will still have to create content. Should I go for another CMS such as Magento or do you think there is a way in a more recent Joomla! version to work with all content in one or max two locations?

• Input/Output console window in XNA

  I am currently making a simple game in XNA but am at a point where testing various aspect gets a bit tricky, especially when you have to wait till you have 1000 score to see if your animation is playing correctly etc. Of course i could just edit the starting variable in the code before I launched but I have recently been interested in trying to implement a console style window which can print out values and take input to alter public variables during run-time. I am aware that VS has the immediate window which achieves a similar thing but i would prefer mine is an actual part of the game with the intention that the user may have limited access to it in the future. Some of the key things i have yet to find an answer to after looking around for a while are: how i would support free text entry how i would access variables during runtime how i would edit these variable I have also read about using a property grid from windows form aps (and partially reflection) which looked like it could simplify a lot of things but i am not sure how I would get that running inside my XNA game window or how i would get it to not look out of place (as the visual aspect of is seems to be aimed just for development time viewing). All in all I'm quite open to any suggestions on how to approach this task as currently I'm not sure where to start. Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu installation does not recognize drive partinioning

  I have a 1TB drive and installed Windows 7 on a 128GB partition. When I now try to install Ubuntu 11.04 it does not recognize the Windows partition but offers the complete 1TB drive to install Ubuntu on instead. It displays: However, in the Ubuntu Disk Utility the Windows partitions are recognized. What do I need to do in order for Ubuntu to recognize the Windows 7 partition and install Ubuntu as a dual boot? • Enterprise online backup providers

  We've used Iron Mountain's LiveVault service but found that it was only good for file level backups. We liked how it backed up every 15 minutes. It doesn't support Exchange 2007-10 and the web interface was very poor. Who else is everyone using? The most notable names in online backup such as Mozy and Carbonite don't really seem suitable for larger companies. We have SQL, Exchange and Sharepoint servers and are looking to virtualize in the near future. Until then bare metal restore capability would be nice. We are currently using Backup Exec 12.5 but that can be so troublesome at times. We have about 2 TB of data. 1TB is archival data.

• Word 2010 & Outlook 2007 - HTML Mail Merge Doesn't Work, Plain Text and Attachments do

  Hopefully someone has an answer or fix for this. When using Outlook 2007 & Word 2007 or Word 2010 & Outlook 2010, Mail merging Works fine. However there are some systems that have Word 2010 and Outlook 2007 installed. In these cases, Mail Merging to HTML Emails doesn't do anything. If i choose to Mail Merge to Plain text emails or attachments, these go through Outlook. Only HTML Email doesn't work. Now, something like Mapi Labs Mail Merge toolkit is abole to get around this, but I was wondering if there was any statement/solution on cross version support for HTML Mail Merging from Microsoft.

• What Windows licenses are required to run additional terminal service sessions

  We need to build out a server running Windows 2008 R2 Standard that can allow up to 10 simultaneous RDP/Terminal Services connections and I'm a little confused about how the CAL licenses work. From one source I was told I needed 10 "server CALs" and an additional 10 "RDP CALs" (total of 20 CALs). From another, I was told I just needed the 10 "RDP CALs", which implicitly came with the server CAL. The Microsoft licensing website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-rds.aspx) seems to support scenario #1, but it is still not real clear what those server CALs are needed for. Also, can we use the 2 "built-in" RDP clients, meaning we only need to purchase 8 CALs to reach a total of 10?

• What is a good motherboard for the Intel i7 series processor?

  I am lost on choosing a good miotherboard at a decent price for my Intel i7-930 CPU. I have read bad things about all of them so far. Issues with RAM not working correctly, Windows not loading with USB keyboards plugged in and all kinds of nightmare stories. Here is my needs. - 6g/b SATA 3 - USB 3.0 - Cheaper is better - Support for up to 24gb of RAM, I will start out with only 12gb though - I will use 64bit v. of Windows 7 so the 4gb RAM limit should not be a problem from my OS - Should be able to boot even if I have a USB keyboard plugged in. If you have experience with a motherboard that meets these specs, please do tell about it. I appreciate any help, I am stuck right now on picking a good board.

• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? • Windows Azure Horror Story: The Phantom App that Ate my Data

By just using the Azure Management Portal, you don’t get a lot of insight into what is happening inside your instances, which are just Windows VMs. This morning, I noticed something quite scary, and fittingly enough, it’s Halloween. I deleted a deployment after doing a new deployment and VIP swap. But, after a few minutes, the instance still appeared in my Stackify dashboard. I thought this odd, as we monitor these operations and remove devices that have been deleted. Digging in showed that it wasn’t a problem with Stackify. This instance was still there, and still sending data. You’ll notice though that the “Status” check shows that the instance no longer exists. And it gets scarier. I quickly checked the running services, and sure enough, the Windows Azure Guest Agent (which runs worker roles) was still running: “Surely, this can’t be” I’m thinking at this point. Knowing that this worker role is in our QA environment, it has debug logging turned on. And, using our log file tailing feature, I can see that, yes, indeed, this deleted deployment is still executing code. Pulling messages off queues. Sending alerts. Changing data. Fortunately, our tools give me the ability to manually disable the Windows service that runs this code. In the meantime, I have contacted everyone I know (and support) at Microsoft to address this issue. Needless to say, this is concerning. When you delete a deployment, it needs to actually delete. Not continue to eat your data. As soon as I learn more, I’ll be posting an update.

• Looking for new hosting company

  I am currently looking for a new hosting company for my business. We are a design and development company and have been recommending WestHost to our clients for the last several years. However due to some changes they have implemented in the last year, we have decided to start referring people elsewhere. Most of our clients need affordable Linux hosting with the basics. SSH is also a definite must and 24/7 support (preferably phone, as well as email/ticket system) that won't cost extra. An easy to use and understand control panel would be nice as well. I have heard good things about HostGator, and am wondering if anyone has experience with them. The prices seem right and they have everything we need. We are also thinking of purchasing a dedicated server with them for a specific project that's going to require one. I don't know if I am asking this in the right place, if this is not welcome here please let me know.

• Configuring Samba to allow Use of CUPS printer

  Having trouble with samba printing. I have a CUPS printer installed on an Ubuntu 11.04 server and that works great. When I try to configure samba to allow an XP machine to use the printer, it fails when printing. I can install the printer drivers for XP from the server and the printer appears in the XP printer control panels. • Troubleshooting USB Hub on Snow Leopard MacOSX

  I just bought a Belkin F5U701-BLK 7-port USB Hub and when I plug it into my iMac it does not seem to recognize it. Do I need to reboot my machine or install a driver? If I have to install a driver where do I get it from? I tried going to Belkin's website to search for drivers and and support info for the hub but I could not find anything. Edit: The USB hub is powering the other devices but my iMac does not recognize both hard drives.

• Why Standards Place Limits on Data Transfer Rates?

  This is a rather general question about hardware and standards in general: Why do they place limits on data transfer rates, and disallow manufacturers from exceeding those rates? (E.g. 100 Mbit/s for Wireless G, 150 Mbit/s for Wireless N, ...) Why not allow for some sort of handshake protocol, whereby the devices being connected agree upon the maximum throughput that they each support, and use that value instead? Why does there have to be a hard-coded limit, which would require a new standard for every single improvement to a data rate?

• How to structure my GUI agnostic project?

  I have a project which loads from database a XML file which defines a form for some user. XML is transformed into a collection of objects whose classes derive from single parent. Something like Control - EditControl - TextBox Control - ContainterControl - Panel Those classes are responsible for creation of GUI controls for three different enviroments: WinForms, DevExpress XtraReports and WebForms. All three frameworks share mostly the same control tree and have a common single parent (Windows.Forms.Control, XrControl and WebControl). So, how to do it? Solution a) Control class has abstract methods Control CreateWinControl(); XrControl CreateXtraControl(); WebControl CreateWebControl(); This could work but the project has to reference all three frameworks and the classes are going to be fat with methods which would support all three implementations. Solution b) Each framework implementation is done in separate projects and have the exact class tree like the Core project. All three implementations are connected using a interface to the Core class. This seems clean but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. Does anyone have a simpler solution or a suggestion how should I approach this task?

• How do I (quickly) let people know that software I am providing for free is not abandon-ware?

  As an independent, individual programmer: How do I let people very quickly know that I have not abandoned the software I've written and given away for free? That I am putting in the effort required to maintain and support my software to a professional level? When software written by one or two developers is available for free, or marked as open-source, usually the default assumption is that it's abandon-ware. This is usually a safe assumption - check out the answers to this question if you doubt it: Why do programmers write applications and then make them free?. There are lots of programmers who provide free and/or open-source tools which are not abandon-ware, though. If we're talking about large companies, ie Google, there's no real problem telling the difference between supported, live tools and software, and those which are abandoned or discontinued. A lively git repository isn't quick - users will have to be savvy enough to understand the repository and know where to look for it. Consistent marketing and community management take more time and effort than I can put in on my own. Also, if my software becomes popular/successful, I assume those will grow on their own, and be supported by power users in the community.

• SQL Server DBA - How to get a good one!

  I'm a lone developer. I am currently developing an application which is seeing me get way way way out of my depth when it comes to SQL DBA'ing, and have come to realise that I should hire a DBA to help me (which has full support from the company). Problem is - who? This SO thread sees someone hire a DBA only to realise that they will probably cause more harm then good! Also, I have just had a bad experience with a ASP.NET/C# contractor that has let us down. So, can anyone out there on SO either... a) Offer their services. b) Forward me onto someone that could help. c) Give some tips on vetting a DBA. I know this isn't a recruitment site, so maybe some good answers for c) would be a benefit for other readers!! BTW: The database is SQL Server 2008. I'm running into performance issues (mainly timeouts) which I think would be sorted out by some proper indexing. I would also need the DBA to provide some sort of maintenance plan, and to review how our database will deal what we intend at throwing at it in the future!

• How to make phone calls using a pc, modem, headphone and no actual phone instrument

  Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. I seem to be able to dial number using dialer.exe, though nothing seems to happen. From Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958143, it looks like dialer.exe alone is not enough for the call. Can somebody tell me how to make and receive phone call with whatever hardware I have, i.e. what software will I need. Thanks.

• DNS settings for SaaS in the cloud?

  I am building a SaaS product. When a user signs up for an account they must select an alias for their site --------.getlaunchpoint.com. Right now I have an A record *.getlaunchpoint.com that points to the ip address server. However, with Azure I am not given an IP address. The suggested implementation is to make use of a CNAME. I need to create a CNAME for *.getlaunchpoint.com - getlaunchpoint.cloudapp.net GoDaddy does not support CNAME wildcards. Searching on Google I'm getting conflicting information... is CNAME wildcard a bad practice? I run into the same problem with Amazon EC2 if I want to make use of load balancers because you cannot tie a public IP address to an Amazon Load Balancer. Amazon also suggests the use of a CNAME. Any help would be appreciated.

• OpenGL setup on Windows

  I have been trying to use OpenGL for two days now. First on Mac, then on Windows. The problem with Mac is that it doesn't support the newer versions of OpenGL. I ran a tutorial that actually did get some things working, but it only works in XCode (i.e., I can't create a new file, paste in the same code, and get it to work). Because of these issues, I moved to Windows. My Windows 7 has OpenGL 4.3, which is the same that is used in alot of other tutorials. However, not one of these tutorials gives any instruction on how to set it up for the first time. I have come across some vague posts saying that some libraries need to be linked. But WHAT libraries, and HOW do I link them? Please help. I am pretty desperate to set this up as this project is due for work soon. I have actually used OpenGL before at my university, but the computers already had everything set up. The project itself is very easy, but setting up OpenGL is not something I know how to do.

• Dual monitors with one above the other?

  I'm using Gnome 3 and proprietary Nvidia drivers. I have tried to set in nvidia-settings my external monitor to be "above" my main one (it's a laptop). However, when I try to drag a window up from the main display to the external one, it gets stuck and can't move past a certain point. Trying to maximize it changes its decoration so it looks maximized (i.e. no borders, etc), but its size or position doesn't change. Now, if I set my external monitor to be "to the left" of the main one, it works, which is why I'm suspecting this is a Gnome issue, not an Nvidia one. Anyone know how to fix this? Update: some versions: Gnome: 3.2.2.1 Nvidia: 280.13 Update 2: I can see that Gnome 3.4 is out, and among the release notes is better external monitor support. However, they only mention a small fix that is unrelated to my problem. Can anyone with Gnome 3.4 and access to an external monitor please test this out and tell me if it works? I don't want to go through the hassle of upgrading my Ubuntu installation unless I know for certain it's going to fix the problem.

• DDNS Not Creating Journal (Dhcpd and Named)

  * EDIT 1 * After monkeying with additional debug logging I see some log entries of interest. 27-Jul-2012 23:45:26.537 general: error: zone example.lan/IN/internal: journal rollforward failed: no more 27-Jul-2012 23:45:26.537 general: error: zone example.lan/IN/internal: not loaded due to errors. ^^^ If I can remedy the above messages I think I'll be good to go ^^^ * EDIT 2 * Grasping at straws I touched a forward and a reverse zone journal file and restarted named. Boom! Works. Despite documentation stating the files are created automatically and what I have seen before... dunno why but that did the trick. Also re-checked perms on the dir the files live in. As certain as I was, they were correct with named having rw. CentOS 6 (final) dhcpd 4.1.1-P1 named BIND 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6 Basic DHCP and DNS functionality are in place on 192.168.111.2. Clients are assigned addresses as intended and can resolve local DNS names as well as Internet names. My problem is that named's zone journal files are not created. chroot: /var/named/chroot I tried placing the zone files in various directories (/var/named/data, /var/named, /var/named/dynamic - no matter which dir with named owning and wide open perms I now get nowhere). Along the way I, at one point, got a permission denied when named tried to create the journal. Resolved the issue by: chown --recursive named:named /var/named chmod --recursive 777 /var/named The journal was then created and here's where things fell apart. I attempted to tame permissions to something more sane and broke it. Once changed and having restarted named it threw an error indicating the journal was out of sync (or something to that affect)... didn't matter since this is a new setup so I deleted it and now it is not recreated. Now though I see no errors in /var/log/messages, my chrooted /var/log/named.log, or chrooted /var/log/named.debug. I increased the debug level with 'rndc trace' - no love. Increased trace to 10, still nothing. SELinux is disabled... Generic Data Fix (GDF) are created by development to fix data issues caused by bugs/issues in the application code.  Other Generic Data Fix benefits/features include: Developed for bugs that can cause data issues. Provides a SELECT script that uses an identification/signature query to identify and report all data affected by issue/condition caused by a bug. Allow customers to view and modify what will be fixed. Provides a separate FIX script to fix the data reported by the SELECT script. The FIX script creates backup tables for the data that is fixed/updated. Available on My Oracle Support for download In Release 12, when creating a refund by either of the following methods: Applied a receipt to the Refund activity - which creates an Invoice in Payables Or you went directly into Payables to create a refund for an open Credit Memo in Receivables The Invoice in Payables that is associated to the refund is cancelled, the corresponding refund application or credit memo in Receivables is not properly re-instated. For the receipt application, it still remains applied to the Refund whereas this should be automatically unapplied. For the credit memo, it stays closed instead of getting re-opened. Doc ID 761993.1 includes the patch to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future as well as a GDF script to fix the current data (Script name: ar_std_refund_unapp.sql).  Download the script and run in READ_ONLY_MODE to identify 'refund' applications with this problem.
