• Building a backup server

  One of my older motherboards broke and I'm planning to use the remaining power supply, hard drive and case to build a backup server. I want to buy a new motherboard and CPU that can be used 24x7 and wont break down in a few months. So the question is, do you have any recommendations on any reliable motherboards and CPU for a backup server? Processing power is not a huge issue.

• Recovered folders from Camera show as JPEG files and can can't be viewed.

  I have recovered a CCTV camera hard disk after a crash and have managed to get most of the data using EasyRecovery Pro. The problem is now that all the data that I have recovered appear like File09.JPG with and image icon in windows XP, but the files can't be viewed in any JPEG viewer software. I suspect that the .JPG files are indeed folders, but I can't force windows XP the change the file type. Very Odd. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Hoo

  I'm trying to find a place where I can download both Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 OEM Iso's. I own both, and my hard drive died in my Vista computer, so I ran out, bought another one and now need to re-install my OS. However, the computer came with it, and didn't come with a disk (Thanks Acer!) So, is there a place I can download an ISO of my Windows that ISN'T illegaly activated? I can't find any torrents that are legitimate. Thanks in advance!

• When RAID 10 is SLOWER than RAID 1, why?

  We have a Dell 2950 with PERC and 14 external SAS 15K 73GB drives. An Oracle database job takes 3 hours to run with the drives set as hardware RAID 10 (striped across 7 mirrored pairs). The same job with the drives in RAID 1 takes only 1 hour. OS is Win 2008 R2 I think. Before we change the RAID level (with considerable downtime) on the production box, does anyone know why we're seeing this odd result, and if there's a better way to fix it?

My network is secured like this: Does that mean that they've used password cracking tools? The pass is not easy to guess but not hard to figure out via brute-force hacking, I guess. • Why Windows Live Photo Gallery stopped displaying thumbnails, and how to fix it?

  I now get this instead, for most (but not all) photos. This is the icon which represents the WLPG application, I think. Some observations: I can see the thumbnails fine in Explorer, which is where a lot of other people have this problem. My C:\ drive may have temporarily filled up at some point recently, but then was cleaned up. Double-clicking on the photo will display it fine, so I know it's not file corruption or permissions issues. Thanks

• What is the best way to migrate to a new file share in a new domain?

  I am looking to move a file share (100 GB or so) from one domain/server to a new domain and server. I would like to do this with little to no downtime and if possible I would like to be able to map permissions from the groups/users in the current system to groups/users in the new domain.   I know of one: The Angstrom Linux distribution has an online builder (called Narcissus) that allows you to select what applications you want preinstalled in the OS, then builds a working image of it for you to download and run from a flash drive. Is there anything like that for more popular distributions like Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu, or Debian? I think this would be particularly useful for virtual appliances and server deployment.

  A while back I set my computer up to sync folders on a shared network drive. I didn't choose my folders carefully and ended up with a huge amount of files to sync, which took forever. I would like to stop sync on those folders, then later select some smaller subfolders to sync. I believe this means I first must delete the existing sync partnerships, but there is no "Delete" option when I list them in Sync Center. How can I delete existing sync partnerships?

• How much audio latency is noticeable by human brain?

  I am choosing a wireless headset for my PC (I hate cables) and am looking at Sennheiser RS 170 / 180. They supposedly sound great, however, there is a 25ms audio latency. I've heard that this is OK when watching TV or listening musing but is bad for games. The question is - has there been any research / hard data that would show how much of a delay is noticeable by human brain? 25ms doesn't sound like a lot but I may be wrong.

  I'm currently trying to debug a particularly hairy set of DNAT based iptables rules (the UDP reply never makes it back to the original requester) and I'm struggling to visualise the packet flow through all the numerous tables involved. So far Google'ing has shown me old 2.4 based ipchains ones. The netfilter site has some good text docs but is short on diagrams and a number of the external links are now dead. So is there a canonical diagram for iptables packet flow, preferably showing how NAT/Masqueraded packets are also dealt with?

It says: Windows can't be installed on this storage device. The chosen harddisk contains a MBR-partition-table.   In my Core i5 desktop machine I tried to install windows 7 32 bit Ultimate. I received blue screen of death while installing OS. Earlier I had was 64 bit Windows vista which was working fine but now i cant install any of OS. When I try to re-install OS again same error screen pops up? how can I fix this ? I have 4GB of RAM installed does it have problems with 32 bit OS. When I install second OS I didn't reformat the entire hard disk.

Is it possible to synchronize their states in real time so that they can be a backup for each other? in case that one is down, the other still has all necessary states to uninterruptedly support all existing TCP connections.   I'm a CS uni student in a country with limited bandwidth, and I find that I download files (particularly install files) for reuse\reinstallation\giving to my friends.. I've kept these files in different folders, and now find it extremely hard to find them, and keeping track of obselete files (the almost weekly releases of iTunes versions, or latest 7zip release or the .Net framework installers). What I would like to find is a file manager that could support tags, so instead of hierachical folders, i could find\view files according to their tags...
