• Database design in blogging systems

  As a learning exercise I'm trying to put myself a blogging system. The goal is to code something that will let me create multiple blogs, like blogger.com or wordpress.com, but much simplified. I would like to ask you, what do you think is best database design for this type of script. Is it better to have one big table, containing posts from all blogs of all users (like friendfeed) or would it be better to create separate table for each blog's posts? I have a dynamic list of data, which i try to display in the HTML Table format using h:dataTable (the bounded value is an arrayList). The table has got a radio button for each row it displays (boolean w/ h:selectOneRadio ) now when i select the radio button in one of these rows, i want to get the values of the row that is selected for which i try to use binding attribute. But i get Row Unavailable exception - is my approach wrong? any suggestions?

  I am in the process of evaluating a Service Broker with SQL noticiation for my project. My requirements is User places a order from System A and it will update Order Table. As soon as order is place i need to notify the System B. I have done a quick POC with Trigger , Service Broker and SQLNotificaiton ADO.NET. It is working as i expected. What i would like to know the group A) What are the best practices i need to follow for this? B) What are disadvantages with the above approach if any? C) Are there any disadvantes of using the Triggers? If so what are those for above approach? The order table will get order from System A like 1000 to 1500 every day. I also would like to know the performance of above approach.

• MySQLi PHP: Check if SQL INSERT query was fully successful using MySQLi

  Hi, I have this big function that gets a lot of different data and insert it into multiple tables.. Not all the data is always available so not all the SQL INSERT queries are successful. I need to check which SQL INSERT query was fully successful and which wasn't to the do something with this data (like inserting into a log table or similar). Just to give you an example of how I think it can be done: $sql = 'INSERT INTO data_table (ID, column1, column2) VALUES(?, ?, ?)'; if ($stmt->prepare($sql)) { $stmt->bind_param('iss', $varID, $var1, $var2); if ($stmt->execute()) { $success == TRUE; //or something like that } } I'm not completely sure this is the best way and if its always really show if the data was inserted into the table... Any suggestions??

• MS SQL Server 15MM rows, simple COUNT query. 15+ seconds?

  We took over a website from another company after a client decided to switch. We have a table that grows by about 25k records a day, and is currently at 15MM records. The table looks something like: id (PK, int, not null) member_id (int, not null) another_id (int, not null) date (datetime, not null) SELECT COUNT(id) FROM tbl can take up to 15 seconds. A simple inner join on 'another_id' takes over 30 seconds. I can't imagine why this is taking so long. Any advice? SQL Server 2005 Express

  I'm wondering what is the best way to model something like the following. Lets say my company sells metal bars (parameters/fields are: length, profile_type, quantity etc.) of different profiles, where profiles may be pipe(pipe_diameter, wall_thickness) or hollow_rectangle(base, height, wall_thickness), or maybe some other profile with different parameters. Lets say maximum number of profiles would be 12, each profile having between 2-5 parameters. Should everything be in a single table like table_bars: id, length, quantity, profile_type, pipe_diameter, wall_thickness, base, height, etc.) where profile type would be (pipe, rectangle etc.) or should every shape have its own table with its own parameters and in table_bars keep only id, length, quantity profile_type and profile_id) and are there any django specific issues is multiple tables are the best answer?   I'm looking to have a click event for all columns but the last column of a GridView and then have a separate click event for the last column of the gridview (a DropDownList). But I want to take the data into my own created entities rather than LINQ to SQL created entites. The entites created by me are also the same as the mapped table entities and their use lies when we send data across the a web service. So , how can I proceed by creating a wrapper around the DBML file so that I always get data in my own created entites.

  I am stuck on how to create tags for each post on my site. I am not sure how to add the tags into database. Currently... The postingtags shows the relation between posting and tags. When users type a posting, I insert the data into the "posting" table. It automatically inserts the posting_id for each post(posting_id is a primary key). $title = mysqli_real_escape_string($dbc, trim($_POST['title'])); $query4 = "INSERT INTO posting (title) VALUES ('$title')"; mysqli_query($dbc, $query4); HOWEVER, how do I insert the tags for each post? When users are filling out the form, there is a checkbox area for all the tags available and they check off whatever tags they want. • Repairing malformatted html attributes using c#

  I have a web application with an upload functionality for HTML files generated by chess software to be able to include a javascript player that reproduces a chess game. I do not like to load the uploaded files in a frame so I reconstruct the HTML and javascript generated by the software by parsing the dynamic parts of the file. The problem with the HTML is that all attributes values are surrounded with an apostrophe instead of a quotation mark. I am looking for a way to fix this using a library or a regex replace using c#. The html looks like this: <DIV class='pgb'><TABLE class='pgbb' CELLSPACING='0' CELLPADDING='0'><TR><TD> and I would transform it into: <DIV class="pgb"><TABLE class="pgbb" CELLSPACING="0" CELLPADDING="0"><TR><TD>

• [C#] How to convert string encoded in windows-1250 to unicode ?

I am receiving from some dll (which is wrapper for some external data source) strings in Windows-1250 codepage and I would like to insert them correctly (as unicode) to table in SQL Server Database. Since particular row in database which should hold that data is of NVarchar type, I only needed to convert it in my C# code to unicode and pass it as parameter. Everything is well and nice, but I stumbled on conversion step. I tried the following but that doesn't work: private static String getUnicodeValue(string string2Encode) // { Encoding srcEncoding = Encoding.GetEncoding("Windows-1250"); UnicodeEncoding dstEncoding = new UnicodeEncoding(); byte[] srcBytes = srcEncoding.GetBytes(string2Encode); byte[] dstBytes = dstEncoding.GetBytes(string2Encode); return dstEncoding.GetString(dstBytes); } When I insert this returned string to table, I don't get correct letters like Ð, d, C, c, C or c.   Hi, I have a Customers table and would like to assign a Salesperson to each customer in a round-robin fashion. Customers --CustomerID --FName --SalespersonID Salesperson --SalespersonID --FName So, if I have 15 customers and 5 salespeople, I would like the end result to look something like this: CustomerID -- FName -- SalespersonID 1 -- A -- 1 2 -- B -- 2 3 -- C -- 3 4 -- D -- 4 5 -- E -- 5 6 -- F -- 1 7 -- G -- 2 8 -- H -- 3 9 -- I -- 4 10 -- J -- 5 11 -- K -- 1 12 -- L -- 2 13 -- M -- 3 14 -- N -- 4 15 -- 0 -- 5 etc... I've been playing around with this for a bit and am trying to write some SQL to update my Customers table with the appropriate SalespersonID, but am having some trouble getting it to work.   hello! on my page i have dataTable, which was initialized with, for example, sAjaxSource url like "/api/reports". when we're doing sorting, filtering it appends to url additional query-keys.   Im getting this exception in the protected virtual void SendPropertyChanged(String propertyName) { if ((this.PropertyChanged != null)) { this.PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); <---- HERE !!! } } of one recently table association i created, there lots of same associations around the database, and this happened in the 4 specific tables i added. Its 1...* relationship and association is Primary Table - Id (identity auto generated) Foreign PId column int not null. I just dont get it....Im using SqlMetal for generation, i regenerated the schema, rebuild, same. This is causing while inserting row in DevExpress XtraGrid, but i dont think this should be issue, same control with same functionality but for different tables works ok. I use grid's event for append value in a property when the entity creating. I disabled this but same again. Recreated the association. No change, exception occurs. Any ideas?

• Java - System design with distributed Queues and Locks

  Looking for inputs to evaluate a design for a system (java) which would have a distributed queue serving several (but not too many) nodes. These nodes would process objects present in the distributed queue and on occasion require a distributed lock across the cluster on an arbitrary (distributed) data structures. These (distributed) data structures could potentially lie in a distributed cache. Eliminating Terracotta (DSO),Hazelcast and Akka what could be alternative choices. Currently considering zookeeper as a distributed locking mechanism. Since the recommendation of a znode is not to exceed the 1M size , the understanding is that zookeeper should not be used a distributed queue. And also from Netflix curator tech note 4. So should a distributed cache, say like memcached, or redis be used to emulate a distributed queue ? i.e. The distributed queue will be stored in the caches and will be locked cluster-wide via zookeeper. Are there potential pitfalls with this high-level approach. The objects don't need to be taken off the queue. The object will pass through a lifecycle which will determine its removal from the queue. There would be about 10k+ objects in a queue at a given time changing states and any node could service one stage of the object's lifecycle. (Although not strictly necessary .. i.e. one node could serve the entire lifecycle if that is more efficient.) Any suggestions/alternatives ? sidenote: new to zookeeper ; redis etc.

  Yes, I need to clean a table and I have EDM that comes with .net 3.5 sp1 (I haven't tried with EF4). I know that works: foreach(var item in ctx.Elements){ ctx.DeleteObject(item); } but it's not a point to get all data from the table and and deleting one by one. Ok, I know it's deleted when I run ctx.SaveChanges(); but DELETE FROM [Elements] looks better :) Tried stored procedure and function import, but VS designer for EDM just doesn't work. I also couldn't find any resources about defining it in .edmx manually.

  I am trying to create a record containing the path to a file. The insertion is done into a Postgres database where UTF8 is enabled, using the NpqSQL driver. My table definition: CREATE TABLE images ( id serial, file_location character varying NOT NULL ) My SQL statement (boiled down to a minimum): INSERT INTO images (file_location) VALUES (E'\\2010') When using pgAdmin to insert the above statement, it works fine. Using the NpgSQL driver through Visual Studio C#, it fails with this exception: "ERROR: 22021: invalid byte sequence for encoding \"UTF8\": 0x81" Replacing my SQL statement with the following: INSERT INTO images (file_location) VALUES (E'\\a2010') ^ The E is encouraged by pgAdmin when using double backslashes. So a quick recap: Why is NpqSQL stopping my insertion of the \\2010?
