• unusual backspace behavior in mac terminal

  I'm trying to figure out how to get ssh sessions to work how I want using the terminal app on mac os x. I'm used to using PuTTY on windows, where backspace means backspace. On mac when I press delete/backspace on mac it deletes the character following the cursor instead of the one before. I turned on Delete sends Ctrl + H, and that works most of the time, but sometimes it just shows on the screen as ^H this is typically at prompts from some custom python scripts on the box I log into. This doesn't happen with PuTTY on windows. Btw I'm logging into a Ubuntu Linux server running openssh. Any idea what I need to do so that backspace is consistently backspace.

• Unable to authenticate Windows XP clients agains Snow Leopard Server PDC after 10.6.2 upgrade

  I have setup a Snow Leopard Server 10.6.1 as a PDC without problems to authenticate Windows XP clients. Joining a Windows XP client to the SLS PDC Domain and log in from a Windows XP client to the SLS PDC Domain are working. After the update to Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 the authentication is broken. opendirectory_smb_pwd_check_ntlmv1 gave -14090 [eDSAuthFailed] By changing the Windows XP "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" policy to NTVLM2 responses only the authentication agains a SMB share is possible, but trying to join SLS PDC Domain is still not possible. opendirectory_smb_pwd_check_ntlmv2 gave -14090 [eDSAuthFailed] Any ideas? Is anyone else having similar authentication difficulties?

• MOSS 2007 SP2 - Error while provisioning SSP.

  This is a brand new installation I am trying to provision the first SSP for MOSS and I keep getting the following error: (Provisioning failed: A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.)) The error also keeps appearing in the Application Event Log as event ID 7888. Google searches tell me its a connection between the Sharepoint server and the SQL server however, this is a production SQL Server which has several databases on it that do not experience any problems. These databases also include the Central Admin and Web Application databases for Sharepoint which are all working fine. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Can't access network share with name defined in hosts file

  I have a network share on a machine that I can only reach by IP address. I then defined an alias for the IP in my hosts file so I could use that instead of the IP but then I can't log on to the share, I just get the logon prompt again and again. So basically this: \\172.17.0.48\SomeShare works but this \\myalias\SomeShare doesn't. myalias is defined in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts as 172.17.0.48 myalias And I can use the alias for remote desktop without problems. Can anyone tell me why this doesn't work for fileshares?

• Oracle Coherence & Oracle Service Bus: REST API Integration

  This post aims to highlight one of the features found in Oracle Coherence which allows it to be easily added and integrated inside a wider variety of projects.  The features in question are the REST API exposed by the Coherence nodes, with which you can interact in the wider mode in memory data grid.Oracle Coherence and Oracle Service Bus are natively integrated through a feature found in the Oracle Service Bus, which allows you to use the coherence grid cache during the configuration phase of a business service. This feature allows you to use an intermediate layer of cache to retrieve the answers from previous invocations of the same service, without necessarily having to invoke the real business service again. Directly from the web console of Oracle Service Bus, you can decide the policies of eviction of the objects / answers and define the discriminating parameters that identify their uniqueness.The coherence REST APIs, however, allow you to integrate both products for other necessities enabling realization of new architectures design.  Consider coherence’s node as a simple service which interoperates through the stardard services and in particular REST (with JSON and XML). Thinking of coherence as a company’s shared service, able to have an implementation of a centralized “map and reduce” which you can access  by a huge variety of protocols (transport and envelopes).An amazing step forward for those who still imagine connectors and code. This type of integration does not require writing custom code or complex implementation to be self-supported. The added value is made unique by the incredible value of both products independently, and still more out of their simple and robust integration.As already mentioned this scenario discovers a hidden new door behind the columns of these two products. The door leads to new ideas and perspectives for enterprise architectures that increasingly wink to next-generation applications: simple and dynamic, perhaps towards the mobile and web 2.0.Below, a small and simple demo useful to demonstrate how easily is to integrate these two products using the Coherence REST API. This demo is also intended to imagine new enterprise architectures using this approach.The idea is to create a centralized system of alerting, fed easily from any company’s application, regardless of the technology with which they were built . Then use a representation standard protocol: RSS, using a service exposed by the service bus; So you can browse and search only the alerts that you are interested on, by category, author, title, date, etc etc.. The steps needed to implement this system are very simple and very few. Here they are listed below and described to be easily replicated within your environment. I would remind you that the demo is only meant to demonstrate how easily is to integrate Oracle Coherence and the Oracle Service Bus, and stimulate your imagination to new technological approaches.1) Install the two products: In this demo used (if necessary, consult the installation guides of 2 products)  - Oracle Service Bus ver. 11.1.1.5.0 http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/service-bus/downloads/index.html - Oracle Coherence ver. 3.7.1 http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/coherence/downloads/index.html 2) Because you choose to create a centralized alerting system, we need to define a structure type containing some alerting attributes useful to preserve and organize the information of the various alerts sent by the different applications. Here, then it was built a java class named Alert containing the canonical properties of an alarm information:- Title- Description- System- Time- Severity 3) Therefore, we need to create two configuration files for the coherence node, in order to save the Alert objects within the grid, through the rest/http protocol (more than the native API for Java, C + +, C,. Net). Here are the two minimal configuration files for Coherence:coherence-rest-config.xml resty-server-config.xml This minimum configuration allows me to use a distributed cache named "alerts" that can  also be accessed via http - rest on the host "localhost" over port "8080", objects are of type “oracle.cohsb.Alert”. 4) Below  a simple Java class that represents the type of alert messages: 5) At this point we just need to startup our coherence node, able to listen on http protocol to manage the “alerts” cache, which will receive incoming XML or JSON objects of type Alert. Remember to include in the classpath of the coherence node, the Alert java class and the following coherence libraries and configuration files:  At this point, just run the coherence class node “com.tangosol.net.DefaultCacheServer”advising you to set the following parameters:-Dtangosol.coherence.log.level=9 -Dtangosol.coherence.log=stdout -Dtangosol.coherence.cacheconfig=[PATH_TO_THE_FILE]\resty-server-config.xml 6) Let's create a procedure to test our configuration of Coherence and in order to insert some custom alerts in our cache. The technology with which you want to achieve this functionality is fully not considerable: Javascript, Python, Ruby, Scala, C + +, Java.... Because the protocol to communicate with Coherence is simply HTTP / JSON or XML. For this little demo i choose Java: A method to send/put the alert to the cache: A method to query and view the content of the cache: Finally the main method that execute our methods:  No special library added in the classpath for our class (json struct static defined), when it will be executed, it asks some information such as title, description,... in order to compose and send an alert to the cache and then it will perform an inquiry, to the same cache. At this point, a good exercise at this point, may be to create the same procedure using other technologies, such as a simple html page containing some JavaScript code, and then using Python, Ruby, and so on.7) Now we are ready to start configuring the Oracle Service Bus in order to integrate the two products. First integrate the internal alerting system of Oracle Service Bus with our centralized alerting system based on coherence node. This ensures that by monitoring, or directly from within our Proxy Message Flow, we can throw alerts and save them directly into the Coherence node. To do this I choose to use the jms technology, natively present inside the Oracle Weblogic / Service Bus. Access to the Oracle WebLogic Administration console and create and configure a new JMS connection factory and a new jms destination (queue). Now we should create a new resource of type “alert destination” within our Oracle Service Bus project. The new “alert destination” resource should be configured using the newly created connection factory jms and jms destination. Finally, in order to withdraw the message alert enqueued in our JMS destination and send it to our coherence node, we just need to create a new business service and proxy service within our Oracle Service Bus project.Our business service is responsible for sending a message to our REST service Coherence using as a method action: PUT Finally our proxy service have to collect all messages enqueued on the destination, execute an xquery transformation on those messages  in order to translate them into valid XML / alert objects useful to be sent to our coherence service, through the newly created business service. The message flow pipeline containing the xquery transformation: Incredibly,  we just did a basic first integration between the native alerting system of Oracle Service Bus and our centralized alerting system by simply configuring our coherence node without developing anything.It's time to test it out. To do this I create a proxy service able to generate an alert using our "alert destination", whenever the proxy is invoked. After some invocation to our proxy that generates fake alerts, we could open an Internet browser and type the URL  http://localhost: 8080/alerts/  so we could see what has been inserted within the coherence node. 8) We are ready for the final step.  We would create a new message flow, that can be used to search and display the results in standard mode. To do this I choosen the standard representation of RSS, to display a formatted result on a huge variety of devices such as readers for the iPhone and Android. The inquiry may be defined already at the time of the request able to return only feed / items related to our needs. To do this we need to create a new business service, a new proxy service, and finally a new XQuery Transformation to take care of translating the collection of alerts that will be return from our coherence node in a nicely formatted RSS standard document.So we start right from this resource (xquery), which has the task of transforming a collection of alerts / xml returned from the node coherence in a type well-formatted feed RSS 2.0 our new business service that will search the alerts on our coherence node using the Rest API. And finally, our last resource, the proxy service that will be exposed as an RSS / feeds to various mobile devices and traditional web readers, in which we will intercept any search query, and transform the result returned by the business service in an RSS feed 2.0. The message flow with the transformation phase (Alert TO Feed Items): Finally some little tricks to follow during the routing to the business service, - check for any queries present in the url to require a subset of alerts  - the http header "Accept" to help get an answer XML instead of JSON: In our little demo we also static added some coherence parameters to the request:sort=time:desc;start=0;count=100I would like to get from Coherence that the results will be sorted by date, and starting from 1 up to a maximum of 100.Done!!Just incredible, our centralized alerting system is ready. • Ubuntu, User Accounts messed up

  I need to fix Ubuntu Accounts some how but don't really see how it could be done. When I'm trying to login as a root I got this message: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ sudo -s [sudo] password for John: John is not in the sudoers file. Then I tried to go to the GRUB menu and from there log in as a root. I did this, but however When I tryed to create user serg, It gave me an error that group already exist. When I tried to change /etc/passwd it said 'permission denied' And this doens't do the trick: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ visudo visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied Also The last thing I tried to do is to create a bootable USB and reinstall ubuntu, however I can not open USB-Creator because it asked me a root passwd. • defunct dbus-daemon zombie freezes login for 30 seconds

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (Precise Pangolin) and noticed a 30 second delay whenever i log into my server via ssh or perform any kind of login via sudo on that machine. I can provoke immediate execution by killing the defunct dbus-daemon showing up during the delay: output of ps fax |grep dbus 19222 ? Ss 0:00 dbus-daemon --system --fork --activation=upstart 19752 ? Z 0:00 \_ [dbus-daemon] <defunct> taping into the dbus using dbus-monitor --system i'm getting: signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=7 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.4" string "" string ":1.4" each login. Stopping the dbus service eliminates this problem but probably causes many other... I'm not running xorg on the machine but the packages are present for X11 forwarding capabilities. I've ruled out the common motd script delay and ssh "UseDNS no" fixes one finds when looking up login delay issues. Many thanks in advance for any help with this, it's been driving me crazy ;-)

• Webfarm and IIS configuration tips/tricks

  I was recently talking with some good friends about tips for performance and what an IIS Administrator could do on the server side.  I also see this question from time to time in the forums @ http://forums.iis.net.    Of course, you should test individual settings in a controlled environment while performing load testing before just implementing on your production farm.  IIS Compression enabled (both static and dynamic if possible, set it to 9)  If you are running IIS 6, check this article out by Scott Forsyth. Run FRT for long running pages (Failed Request Tracing) Sql Connection pooling in code Look at using PAL with performance counters ( http://blogs.iis.net/ganekar/archive/2009/08/12/pal-performance-analyzer-with-iis.aspx )  Look at load testing using visual studio load testing tools Log parser finding long running pages.  Here is a couple examples Look at CPU, Memory and disk counters.  Make sure the server has enough resources. Same machineKey account across all same nodes Localize content vs. using UNC based content on a single server (My UNC tag with great posts) Content expiration ETAG’s the same across all web-farms Disable Scalable Networking Pack Use YSlow or Developer tools in Chrome to help measure the client experience improvements. • Unity launcher doesn't appear in VNC session

  I'd like to have a unity desktop accessible via VNC on a precise server machine I have running. I installed the ubuntu-desktop package. I'm launching a VNC session with the following in my ~/.vnc/xstartup file: !/bin/sh xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1 gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d What could the issue be here? The content of my /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu-2d.session file (this is what 12.04 puts there by default) is: [GNOME Session] Name=Ubuntu 2D RequiredComponents=gnome-settings-daemon; RequiredProviders=windowmanager;panel;shell; DefaultProvider-windowmanager=metacity DefaultProvider-panel=unity-2d-panel DefaultProvider-shell=unity-2d-shell DesktopName=Unity I don't know anything about unity-2d, but I guessed that the default session was not configured to use the launcher. • Option 82 and dhcpd. "No free leases" for second computer

  There is DHCP server in network (isc-dhcpd-server-3.0 on FreeBSD 7.2) than gives one IP per switch port to every user via Option 82 The problem appears when user disconnects one of his computers and connects another(i.e notebook with different MAC address) then DHCPD puts to log "...network net1: no free leases", because there is record in leases file that this IP is already owned by another MAC. That second computer will have his IP only after default-lease-time (that is IIRC minimum 10min, and after 3min he usually calling support) or after deletion of dhcpd.leases file and restart of dhcpd. Is there a way to turn leases off at all, because we have strict binding between switch-port-ip?

  Lately it has been a bit rough. I basically know all the things I need and all the avenues to get there for work. There's been no real issue of a problem with too high complexity, and performance is good. Still, after three major projects this year, my mind is behaving a little strange. It's like I'm used to working in O(1+log(N-neatTricks)) but for some reason it processes in O(N^2)! I've experienced a sort of burnout after long deadlines and drudging projects before, but when it turns into a longer experience, I haven't found the usual suspects to be helpful. Take more walks Work on other code Overdesign everything until I feel intensely driven to just make it (sorta works) How can a programmer recoup from the specific hole in your head programming leaves after being mentally ransacked by these bloody corporations and their fancy money? Hopefully some of you have some better ideas, because I could really use another round of being looted and pillaged.I've often wondered if there are special puzzles or some kind of activity that would de-stress the tangled balance of left and right braininess programmers often deal with. Do any special techniques, activities, anything seem to help with the developer's mindset especially?

• How do I set up a public server on a network?

  I am trying to set up a personal cloud server with OwnCloud on Ubuntu. LAMP is all set up. I was able to access it using the external IP address when I connected it directly to the modem, but what if I what if I want my server to share a LAN? I still want it accessible over the internet, but then if I go to the IP address from a web browser, it just tries to log into to router admin tools. The internal IP address works across the LAN, but I want to be able to access it from anywhere. This may be simple and I may be over-thinking it, but how do access my server?   I have been investigating a problem that occurred on a Windows 2003 server a few days ago. there are about 15 app pools, and within a few minutes, they all produced the error below in the system log: A process serving application pool 'Pool 31x' failed to respond to a ping. The process id was '7144'. The pools were then restarted automatically, but timed out during startup, leaving all sites down. My question is: what would cause a "ping timeout" to all of the app pools around the same time, and then why would they start up too slowly? The app in each pool is a WCMS which uses the .NET 1.1 framework. It connects to a remote DB but is otherwise independent of other machines.

• Sendmail not working from local PHP when headers not specified

  Hi. I'm having trouble getting my local XAMPP server to send emails via my remote SMTP server. In PHP, if I put: $headers = "From: [email protected]\r\n"; mail('[email protected]', 'test', '', $headers); Then this works. However, if I don't specify the header, ie.: mail('[email protected]', 'test', ''); Then this fails. The sendmail.log file says: smtpstatus=554 smtpmsg='554 Message refused.' errormsg='the server did not accept the mail' exitcode=EX_UNAVAILABLE I've tried changing my sendmail command in my php.ini to: sendmail_path = "C:/xampp/sendmail/sendmail.exe -t -f [email protected]" but this doesn't work either. Thanks for any help with this, Dan. ps. this is on windows.

• setup Zyxel USG 20W as L2TP VPN Server

  I've a Zywall USG 20W (wireless disabled) behind a router supplied by the ISP. All ports (both TCP and UDP) on the ISP router are forwarded to the 20W. I'm trying to configure an L2TP VPN to be used by Windows Xp / 7 with Microsoft native client. This was working before with a different firewall, so I'm pretty sure that all the required packets are flowing to the 20W. I followed a tutorial from the italian Zyxel Website, but I cannot get the VPN to work. Always cannot pass phase 2, and I see the following on the log: [ID]: Tunnel [Default_L2TP_VPN_Connection] Phase 2 local policy mismatch Phase 1 goes fine. In Windows the error is always 788. This happens regardless the proposals I set in the phase 1 and 2 setting. What should I check ? Is there any way to get more detailed diagnostic info (policy mismatch is too generic) ? • Munin-cron fails "Nothing to do", possibly a munin.conf problem?

  I have been working on this for a few hours now, and haven't yet been able to get munin to output the html files/generated graphs of resource usage on my CentOS 5.3 server. Here are some things I run as the munin user, and the results: /usr/share/munin/munin-update --nofork --debug (above works fine, takes ~2.4 seconds to complete) munin-run cpu (And other options/plugins (besides 'cpu'), all work fine and give desired output) munin-cron Fails with: [FATAL] There is nothing to do here, since there are no nodes with any plugins. Please refer to http://munin-monitoring.org/wiki/FAQ_no_graphs at /usr/share/munin/munin-html line 38 I am wondering if, perhaps, the settings in my munin.conf file might be causing a problem. • Windows CE: SDK Doesn’t Show up in Visual Studio 2008

  A customer recently contacted me because after installing an SDK it didn’t show up in Visual Studio 2008.  So being a good vendor I installed VS2008 and then installed the SDK – no problem the SDK showed up and I could create projects based on it. I let the customer know that the SDK definitely works with VS2008. The customer got back to me and asked what OS I was using. Hmm, how could that play into this? I told him that I use Windows XP, and it turned out that he is way more modern than I am and is using both Windows Vista and 7. The customer opened a support case with Microsoft. The answer turns out to be that the SDK install requires the user to be logged on as an administrator when installing on Windows Vista and 7 for the SDK to show up in Visual Studio 2008. This problem does not seem to exist for Visual Studio 2005 on those operating systems. The actual instructions from Microsoft Support are: 1)      Make sure Visual Studio 2008 is not running. I also shut down the device emulator manager but you may not be using that. 2)      Open a “Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt” as Administrator. On Windows 7 just right click the short cut and pick the “Run as administrator” option. 3)      Enter the following command: msiexec /log SDKInstallLog.txt /package <the path to your .msi file> 4)      When asked if you wish to do a custom or complete install pick custom 5)      Instruct the installer to omit the installation of the documentation. This was something I found about CE 6 SDK installation issue and may have no bearing upon your problem but I did it anyway. 6)      Install   Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

I encountered some rather ominous looking messages on the vCenter console and in the HP ProLiant ILO event log... Lost connectivity to the device ... backing the boot filesystem. As a result, host configuration changes will not be saved to persistent storage. Embedded Flash/SD-CARD: Error writing media 0, physical block 848880: Stack Exception. VMware advocates the use of USB and SD (SDHC) boot devices for ESXi. It was one of the main reasons the smaller footprint ESXi was developed (versus the older ESX). I've spent much time highlighting the differences between ESXi's installable and embedded modes to coworkers and clients. However, these failures do seem to happen. In this case, this is my third instance. Luckily, this is a vSphere cluster with SAN storage. What steps should be taken to remediate this failure?
