• Web deploy (msdeploy), syncing everything but sites and pools (but include siteDefaults)

  Today I do the following to sync two webservers but skip all site configuration: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:webServer -dest:webServer,computerName=web25:8080 -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/sites -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/applicationPools However, this effectively also skip the siteDefaults, which I do like to sync (system.applicationHost/sites/siteDefaults) There doesn't seem to be a way to "include" a section, to override the skip directive. And there doesn't seem to be a way to sync only the siteDefaults section from applicationHost either, since source appHostConfig only seem to sync a specified site, and not siteDefaults. Maybe it is possible to "skip" using an Xpath expression or similar, to only skip the nodes, but include , but I find the documentation a bit confusing and my Xpath is rusty.

• Demystifying "chunked level of detail"

  Just recently trying to make sense of implementing a chunked level of detail system in Unity. I'm going to be generating four mesh planes, each with a height map but I guess that isn't too important at the moment. I have a lot of questions after reading up about this technique, I hope this isn't too much to ask all in one go, but I would be extremely grateful for someone to help me make sense of this technique. 1 : I can't understand at which point down the Chunked LOD pipeline that the mesh gets split into chunks. Is this during the initial mesh generation, or is there a separate algorithm which does this. 2 : I understand that a Quadtree data structure is used to store the Chunked LOD data, I think i'm missing the point a bit, but Is the quadtree storing vertex and triangles data for each subdivision level? 3a : How is the camera distance usually calculated. When reading up about quadtree's, Axis-aligned bounding box's are mentioned a lot. In this case would each chunk have a collision bounding box to detect the camera or player is nearby? or is there a better way of doing this? (raycast maybe?) 3b : Do the chunks calculate the camera distance themselves? 4 : Does each chunk have the same "resolution". for example at top level the mesh will be 32x32, will each subdivided node also be 32x32. • Advantages of Hudson and Sonar over manual process or homegrown scripts.

  My coworker and I recently got into a debate over a proposed plan at our workplace. We've more or less finished transitioning our Java codebase into one managed and built with Maven. Now, I'd like for us to integrate with Hudson and Sonar or something similar. My reasons for this are that it'll provide a 'zero-click' build step to provide testers with new experimental builds, that it will let us deploy applications to a server more easily, that tools such as Sonar will provide us with well-needed metrics on code coverage, Javadoc, package dependencies and the like. He thinks that the overhead of getting up to speed with two new frameworks is unacceptable, and that we should simply double down on documentation and create our own scripts for deployment. Since we plan on some aggressive rewrites to pay down the technical debt previous developers incurred (gratuitous use of Java's Serializable interface as a file storage mechanism that has predictably bit us in the ass) he argues that we can document as we go, and that we'll end up changing a large swath of code in the process anyways. I contend that having accurate metrics that Sonar (or fill in your favorite similar tool) provide gives us a good place to start for any refactoring efforts, not to mention general maintenance -- after all, knowing which classes are the most poorly documented, even if it's just a starting point, is better than seat-of-the-pants guessing. Am I wrong, and trying to introduce more overhead than we really need? Some more background: an alumni of our company is working at a Navy research lab now and suggested these two tools in particular as one they've had great success with using. My coworker and I have also had our share of friendly disagreements before -- he's more of the "CLI for all, compiles Gentoo in his spare time and uses Git" and I'm more of a "Give me an intuitive GUI, plays with XNA and is fine with SVN" type, so there's definitely some element of culture clash here.

• Ubuntu and racadm

  I recently purchased a used poweredge 1850 server and it came with a DRAC card. After wiping the HDD and installing ubuntu server 12.04.3 LTS amd64 on it, I am now trying to gain access to the DRAC which I believe is version 4. I have properly configured the DRAC to use it's own IP on my LAN and when I point my browser to the IP address, I am greeted with the DRAC login page (it has the dell logo and everything). However, after trying the credentials of root/calvin, I was denied access. So I think that the previous owners had set their own password. After doing some reading, it appears that I can reset the credentials to the default using racadm config -g cfgUserAdmin -o cfgUserAdminPassword -i 1 newpassword but upon entering the command, I get this error: bash: /usr/sbin/racadm: No such file or directory This holds true even if I run sudo su prior to running the racadm command. If, however, I run sudo racadm config -g cfgUserAdmin -o cfgUserAdminPassword -i 1 newpassword there are no errors. Yet, when I try to log into the DRAC via the web interface using the credentials of root/newpassword I am still not granted access. I installed the dell utilities via the guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesServersDellNotes. I first tried to install the 64 bit version that is on the dell repositories, but after that was unsuccessful, I just followed the guide verbatim. No errors were produced in either case. I even followed the information at the bottom of the guide by executing sudo pppd /dev/ttyS1 1382400 crtscts noipdefault noauth lock persist connect 'chat -v "" CLIENT CLIENTSERVER "\\c"' but obviously, replacing the /dev/ttyS1 with the correct information for my system. ls -l /usr/sbin/ | grep racadm yields -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 87930 Sep 16 04:03 racadm I have tried these credentials after each attempt of changing the password: root/calvin root/newpassword admin/calvin admin/newpassword All have been unsuccessful. What is the next course of action that I should take?

  I have k csv files (5 csv files for example), each file has m fields which produce a key and n values. I need to produce a single csv file with aggregated data. I'm looking for the most efficient solution for this problem, speed mainly. I don't think by the way that we will have memory issues. Also I would like to know if hashing is really a good solution because we will have to use 64 bit hashing solution to reduce the chance for a collision to less than 1% (we are having around 30000000 rows per aggregation). For example file 1: f1,f2,f3,v1,v2,v3,v4 a1,b1,c1,50,60,70,80 a3,b2,c4,60,60,80,90 file 2: f1,f2,f3,v1,v2,v3,v4 a1,b1,c1,30,50,90,40 a3,b2,c4,30,70,50,90 result: f1,f2,f3,v1,v2,v3,v4 a1,b1,c1,80,110,160,120 a3,b2,c4,90,130,130,180 algorithm that we thought until now: hashing (using concurentHashTable) merge sorting the files DB: using mysql or hadoop or redis. The solution needs to be able to handle Huge amount of data (each file more than two million rows) a better example: file 1 country,city,peopleNum england,london,1000000 england,coventry,500000 file 2: country,city,peopleNum england,london,500000 england,coventry,500000 england,manchester,500000 merged file: country,city,peopleNum england,london,1500000 england,coventry,1000000 england,manchester,500000 The key is: country,city. This is just an example, my real key is of size 6 and the data columns are of size 8 - total of 14 columns. We would like that the solution will be the fastest in regard of data processing.

• Windows 2008 Server in Amazon EC2 stops responding when SSTP/VPN connection is closed

  All, I have a single Windows 2008 server running in Amazon's EC2 cloud. It's running a web application that is running fine and is accessible to the outside world. I need 3-5 developers to be able to work on database on the server, and was intending to accomplish this by setting up SSTP/RRAS on the server and letting them VPN in. This has been a bit of an ordeal due to the amount of server roles and messing with certificates that has been needed, but my VPN connection works now (all clients will be Windows 7). My problem is that when I drop my VPN connection (from the client side) the server hangs. The only way that I've found to get it back is to reboot it from the Amazon management console.   In sublime text, we can press ??P to bring up the command palette. Are there any similar tools for vim? I’ve been trying vim-ctrlp-cmdpalette, and although it works relatively well (there are some small issues), it depends on ctrlp (not a huge problem), and it looks like it won’t see much development (it has 14 commits over the course of 3 days, 5 months ago, for an “Initial experimental version”), so I was wondering if there are any known alternatives, since searching for “vim command palette” is a bit limiting; maybe there are some other terms more appropriate for this.

• IIS6 Permissions

  We have a set of IIS6 Jakarta/ASP.NET applications (implemented as virtual directories) on a machine without a domain. The directories all exist under the default website. We need to setup the permissions so that certain users can access only specific applications yet others users can access several of the applications. The way it's been setup previously has been to explicitly deny access to the users for every application except the ones that they are allowed to see. The problem is that the list of applications changes fairly often (for demos etc) and it's been known for the developers to forget to deny the old users access to the new applications which leads to security problems. This is all quite unmaintainable. Does anybody have any advice on this? Surely I can't be the only person to find this all a bit of a mess? Thanks

• 12.04.1 no audio through HDMI

  having a bit of an issue with getting audio to go through HDMI. Here are the base specs: OS: Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.1 x64 CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8G 4M FM2 R Mobo: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 OS: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Vid Card: (integrated on CPU) AMD Radeon HD 7660D HDMI sound works fine under Win7 (after mobo and vid drivers are installed), so it's not physically broken. Audio through the normal headphone jacks works fine under Ubuntu. Looking at the audio panel, there is no HDMI output at all. aplay -l also reports only: card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 In additional drivers there are two versions: ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER (post-release update) The first installs, but problem persists. I do get more resolutions to pick from. Second version does not, reporting it failed installation and to find details at: /var/log/jockey.log Looked at the log, and it's insanely long, if necessary I can get it to you guys. Did more research and some had luck by manually installing the drivers, so tried to give that a shot by following this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Manually_installing_Catalyst_12.6 starting at 3.1 Manually installing Catalyst 12.6. I immediately had 2 issues, (1) the AMD website does not provide any drivers for Linux, and (2) the following command did not work: sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise sh: 0: Can't open amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run Some other posts stated to update "alsa-drivers", but that also did not work as install command for the new version of them did not work. I forget the exact issue, but similar to above, cannot open / cannot find. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Ubuntu Server 12.04 as a router. Problem with DNS

  I have a virtualbox lab made up of 4 Windows 2008 R2 servers (DC/DNS,SQL,SHAREPOINT, EXCHANGE) that are configured with static ip addresses with NIC's attached to Internal network. Everything works. I had the requirement to execute some tests that also access external services available on the internet. To keep things clean and similar to the production environment I have installed another VM, with Ubuntu Server 12.04 64 bit and configured (I hope) to work as a router like described on this post. This VM has two network interfaces: first is Bridged with the host and is used as a WAN connection and the other one attached in the Internal Network with its own static IP address on the internal network subnet. But actually the Windows servers does not connect to the internet while the unix one connects. I did a route command. this is the result: Kernel IP Routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default 10.69.121.1 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 10.69.121.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 192.168.83.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 Can somebody help me with this configuration? :) Thanks! • Cropping a line (laser beam) in XNA

  I have a laser sprite that I wish to crop. I want to crop it so when it collides with an item, I can calculate the distance between the starting point, and the ending point, and only draw that. This eliminates the "overdraw" of a laser drawing past an item. Essentially, I'm trying to crop a line, but also keep that line "attached" to the nose of my ship. The line should not be drawn past the nose of my ship, that should be the starting point. There is no rotation to worry about. Currently, I thought that doing this through SpriteBatch would be best. This is my current Spritebatch code: spriteBatch.Draw(Laser.sprite, new Rectangle((int)Laser.position.X, (int)Laser.position.Y, Laser.sprite.Width, LaserHeight), new Rectangle(0, 0, (int)(Laser.sprite.Width), LaserHeight), new Color(255, 255, 255, (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(Laser.Alpha, 0, 255)), Laser.rotation, new Vector2(Laser.sprite.Width/2, LaserHeight/2), SpriteEffects.None, 0); But this doesn't quite work. It does only draw part of the sprite, but when LaserHeight is incremented, it lengthens the line in both ways! I believe this is due to some stupid error on my part with the Origin of the draw. Quick recap: I need to have my laser sprite drawn with the bottom of it at the nose of my ship, and then use LaserHeight to crop the image so only part of it is drawn. I have a feeling my explanation is a bit...lacking. So if you require more information, please say so and I will try to provide more information. Thanks in advance!

• Unity calendar lens not showing events

  I'm trying to get proper/useful calendar integration into Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Google Calendar (& account) and I want to be able to use this without opening the browser. I want to get the Unity Calendar lens working, so that it shows events coming up, and it allows me a quick way to add new events. However, after installing it, it does not find any events, nor allow me to add a new event. Note that I've installed Lightning 1.4, Evolution mirror 0.2.3, Evolution, and unity-calendar lens. I've also installed Calendar-indicator. I suspect that somehow the lens is not getting the calendar information from thunderbird via evolution. A bit of searching around led me to try this command: /usr/lib/calendar-lens/calendar-lens-daemon.py. • Ubuntu installation on iMac

  I have an iMac configured as follows - Screen 27" CPU 3.4 GHz i7 Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970 1024 MB I downloaded Ubuntu version 11.10 64 bit ISO and burnt that to both DVD and USB stick as per the instructions on Ubuntu's download page. Neither will boot. Symptoms are as follows - DVD: When the iMac is restarted and booted from DVD (labelled Windows which isn't mentioned in Ubuntu's website instructions) one line is displayed against a black screen displaying a message about the developer and date. After 5 minutes the message hangs and the DVD ceases to spin. USB Stick: Strangely I have to select the EFI boot CD icon which appears after holding down the Alt key. A text menu appears offering me to try Ubuntu without installing. I select this and the screen goes blank and stays blank. Any ideas? Lastly, after writing Ubuntu to DVD and USB stick, neither could be read by OSX making the instructions to eject them as per Ubuntu website's instructions useless. This might help? Thanks, Shane.

• I'm receiving an SSL error in various browsers, but I can't find non-SSL content

  I'm receiving an error with my SSL connection. Using google chrome I see the following error: Your connection is encrypted with 128-bit encryption ... however this page includes other resources which are not secure I've scoured the source code, scripts and rendered code in the browser but cannot find where an http:// call is made. I've also used Fiddler2 to examine the traffic and everything is coming across via HTTPS. Has anyone run into this issue before and if so how did you go about finding the culprit. The website is running ASP.NET MVC3 in C#. The page in question is a simple payment page. The only external call is the google analytics tracking code. The page appears to load correctly, all images and scripts are in place.

  As I'm new to Team Foundation Server, this may seem a bit of a daft question but I have been tasked with installing TFS2010. What I want to know is, do I have to have a full version of MOSS 2007 installed to build a project dashboard for TFS or can I get away with just using WSS 3.0 that comes with TFS? Having looked through the docs for TFS, I get the idea that I have to have a full Sharepoint installation somewhere. Though I'd like this to be clarified if possible. Thanks in advance.

• lower-case 'c' key not working in bash

  This is a bit of a strange one. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. It's been working well but today, I ran into a hell of strange phenomenon. I can no longer type a lower-case 'c' in bash. At first I thought it was a misconfiguration for the gnome terminal but I tried both a stock xterm and directly at the console (ctrl+alt+F1) and the issue was the same. I can type an upper-case C without any difficulty and I can type lower-case 'c' in any other terminal based program (vim, bash, less, etc.). The lower 'c' also works if I jump into plain old sh. I looked at all the configuration files I know of and haven't found anything incriminating in there. I suspect it's not going to be that simple anyway because if I run bash with the '--norc' option from within sh, the problem remains. I don't know what else to check. In fact, if I wanted to cause this problem on a given machine, I have no idea how it could be done. Total mystery.

• internet sharing over wifi between ubuntu 11.10 and windows7

  So i have looked up a lot of forums for these solution but haven't really found one that works. I have a laptop running ubuntu 11.10 connected to the ethernet cord at home and i want to share the internet over wifi with my friend's laptop running windows7. I did not think it would be so difficult, I tried a lot of things: I went to networks and then wireless and set up a wifi hotspot, my laptop got connected to it and the ipv4 was set to "shared to other computers". Thankfully the network was discoverable and after some tries my friend was able to connect to the network, but it still showed that there was no internet access. I tried coniguring the tcp addresses of the wifi on his laptop. Bottom line: did not work. I went to the network manager, clicked on create a new wireless network, created one with security WEP 40/128 bit passphrase, tried the other 2 options later, and did the same thing as with the wifi, this network was also not discoverable initially and after some tries, we could connect to it but then ICS was not working although there was a working internet on my ubuntu laptop. I would really appreciate if some one who has faced a similar problem and got it fixed to please give me a step by step solution of how to get this work, because this is a prety common problem with ubuntu distros I have noticed. Note: This however seems to work with ubuntu to ubuntu connections, but specifically cross OS connections like windows or my phone running android ICS are not able to see or if connect not able to share internet on my laptop

• Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000 PC resolution slightly off.

  Hi, I have a PC running two Nvidia 8500 GTs in SLI mode and I am trying to use my TV in dual mode. When I switch the TV to PC the screen is nearly centered with a slight offset. All resolutions are effected from 800x600 all the way up to the TVs native 1360x768. I have tried with SLI on and off and have PhysX turned off as well as I thought that might have an effect. I am running Windows XP 64-bit SP2 DirectX ver 9.0c Nvidia driver version 181.22 Any other information please let me know. Thanks in advance.

• How to see ALT text in Firefox

  I know Mozilla thinks it's a bug that IE shows ALT text even after the image has loaded; while users think it's a bug that Firefox doesn't work exactly like IE. This disagreement is irrelevant to my question: How can I make my Firefox show the ALT tooltip when I hover the mouse over an image? Obviously XKCD is a bit tame without this essential functionality. I've tried the Firefox plugin Popup ALT Attribute but it doesn't work; after restarting the browser and hovering over an image with an ALT text, no tooltip appears. I reproduced this on several computers with several (Windows) OS versions.

  I'd like to use stylesheet instead of hard-coding HTML so that text within cells are aligned vertically, ie. text starts at the upper left-hand corner. • Any good C++ Component/Entity frameworks?

  (Skip to the bold if you want to get straight to my question :) ) I've been dabbling in the different technologies available out there to use. I tried Unity and component based design, managing to get a little guy up and running around a map with basic pathfinding. I really loved how easy it was to program using components, but I wanted a bit more control and something more 2D friendly, so I went with LibGDX. I looked around and found 2 good frameworks for Java, which are Artemis and Apollo. I didn't like Artemis much, so I went with Apollo, which I loved. I managed to integrate it with Box2D and get a little guy running around bouncing balls. Great! But since I want to try out most of the options, there is still C++/SFML that I haven't tried yet. Coming from a Java/C# background, I've always wanted to get my hands dirty with C++. But then, after some looking around, I noticed there aren't any Component-Based frameworks for me to use. There's a somewhat done porting of Artemis, but, aside from not being completely finished, I didn't quite like Artemis even in Java. I found Apollo's approach much more.. logical. So, my question is, are there any good Component/Entity frameworks for C++ that I can use that are similar to Artemis, or preferably, Apollo?

You get into office, there are a lot of phones ringing, but could be that they are just doing a new sales promotion. You settle in, when you notice a dark cloud hovering over you. It takes you a couple of moments, but you recognize the cloud is your boss. Usually he checks on you every morning with his "Soooo Peeeeter, how about those TCP/IP reports?" routine, but today he forgot everything about common manners and rudely invaded your personal space. No "Good Morning", just some drooling, grunts and curses. He reminds you a bit of neanderthal who is trying to get away from cyber tooth tiger, fear and panic all compressed in a tight ball. You try to decipher the new language that he created since yesterday and you start understanding that something bad happened overnight - production system went down. Now, your system is usually used by clients during regular working hours from 9-5, but for whatever reason you didn't get any alerts on your beeper (for people under 30 - beeper was like a mobile phone that could only ring and tell you who beeped you). Need to remember to charge it next time. So it is 8:45am, the system MUST be up at 9am. Every 10 seconds, your boss lets out yet another curse which communicates to you that another customer is having problems getting into the system. Also several account managers are now hovering over your boss trying to make him understand how clients are REALLY REALLY suffering. Everyone is depending on you to get the system up ASAP and at the same time hinder your progress by constantly distracting you. How do you keep cool in a situation like this?
