• FusionCharts vs GoogleCharts vs HighCharts suggestions required for commercial use

  I find that FusionCharts v3 evaluation and HighCharts cannot be used for commercial purpose. Google charts is the best option but those are not as good looking as any of the above. They don't even have 3d charts although their visualization API does support 3D which i cannot find. Is there any open source graphing or charting solution available which can be used in commercial products? I even looked in to Open Flash Charts 2 but found that the developer had left the project long time a go and the currently out libs are way too buggy. I had to fix more than 50 bugs to get their 1 chart working. I tried to fix others but couldn't get Pie charts etc. working. What i'm looking for is - 1. Attractive 3d column chart. 2. 3d Pie Chart. 3. Spline Chart. 4. Geographical Chart. Does anyone knows any open source or free solution which can be used for commercial products? Cheers!

  Does anybody knows how can component <ice:selectInputDate> be mapped on a java.util.Calendar field, not java.util.Date? I am using from IceFaces version 1.8.2, the component <ice:selectInputDate>. This component requires to be bound with a java.util.Date proeprty. For example, value="#{bean.myDate}", the myDate field must be of type java.util.Date. But I need my date field to be of type java.util.Calendar. • Binary serialization/de-serialization in C++ and C#

  Hello. I am working on a distributed application which has two components. One is written in standard C++ (not managed C++) and the other one is written in C#. Both are communicating via a message bus. I have a situation in which I need to pass objects from C++ to C# application and for this I need to serialize those objects in C++ and de-serialize them in C# (something like marshaling/un-marshaling in .NET). I need to perform this serialization in binary and not in XML (due to performance reasons). I have used Boost.Serialization to do this when both ends were implemented in C++ but now that I have a .NET application on one end, Boost.Serialization is not a viable solution. I am looking for a solution that allows me to perform (de)serialization across C++ and .NET boundary i.e., cross platform binary serialization. I know I can implement the (de)serialization code in a C++ dll and use P/Invoke in the .NET application, but I want to keep that as a last resort. Also, I want to know if I use some standard like gzip, will that be efficient? Are there any other alternatives to gzip? What are the pros/cons of them? Thanks

• HTML to RTF Converter for .NET

  I've already seen lots of posts on the site for RTF to HTML and some other posts talking about some HTML to RTF converters, but I'm really trying to get a full breakdown of what is considered the most widely used commercial product, open source product or if people recommend going home grown. Apologies if you consider this a duplicate question, but I'm trying to create a product matrix to see what is the most viable for our application. I also think this would be helpful for others. The converter would be used in an ASP.NET 2.0 application (we're upgrading to 3.5 shortly but still sticking with WebForms) using SQLServer 2005 (soon 2008) as the DB. From reading a few posts, SautinSoft appears to be popular as a commercial component. Are there other commercial components that you'd recommend for converting HTML to RTF? Price does matter, but even if it's a little on the expensive side, please list it. For open source, I read that OpenOffice.org can be run as a service so that it can convert files. However, this appears to be only Java based. I imagine, I'd need some kind of interop to use this? What .NET open source components, if any, are out there for converting HTML to RTF? For home grown, is an XSLT the way to go with XHTML? If so, what component do you recommend for generating XHTML? Otherwise, what other home grown avenuses do you recommend. Also, please note that I currently don't care so much about RTF to HTML. If a commercial component offers this and the price is still the same, fine, otherwise please don't mention it.

• Starting Java applet directly from jar file

  The goal is to have an applet run from a jar file. The problem is that the applet only seems to want to run from an exploded jar file. Samples on the Internet suggest this applet tag: <applet code="com.blabla.MainApplet" archive="applet.jar" width="600" height="600"> This will not even try to look in the jar file and fails with: Caused by: java.io.IOException: open HTTP connection failed:http://localhost:8080/helloWord/com/blabbla/MainApplet.class at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.getBytes(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.access$000(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) ... 7 more Setting the codebase instead of the archive attribute to the jar file. • Using JBoss EL with Websphere

  Hey, I'm doing a project which is going to run on Websphere. I'm using JSF/Facelets/Richfaces for this project. I want to use the JBoss EL implementation as it allows calling methods with parameters from EL etc. ... usually this is accomplished by getting the JBoss EL jar and then putting this in the web.xml: <context-param> <param-name>com.sun.faces.expressionFactory</param-name> <param-value>org.jboss.el.ExpressionFactoryImpl</param-value> </context-param> However this isn't working ... I don't know if its a problem with Websphere or ...??? • Dealing with "Coder's Block" (or blank form syndrome)

  I know this is the sort of somewhat open-ended question that we're discouraged from asking, but there are lots of open-ended questions around already, and this is something quite relevant to me right now. Do you ever get those times when you're about to start work on a new function/feature of an established system, and you get "coder's block"?. It's like a mental freeze at the sight of a large, completely unpopulated dialog, or an empty code file with just the stub reference headers etc. Do you ever have that 'ulp' moment that seems to sap all your momentum and leave you wide open to distractions (surfing the web for inspiration, checking out 'crackoverflow' etc)? Not that I'd wish it on anyone, but hopefully some of you do, and hopefully some of you can suggest tips or strategies for overcoming the situation, regaining your momentum and becoming productive again. I usually try to reduce what I'm about to do down to absurdly small steps, in the hope that as the job becomes just a series of 'doh' tasks, I'll kickstart myself into working through them. However sometimes, particularly when a deadline is looming, I'll get overwhelmed by this approach as I realise I probably don't have enough time to do all of those tiny steps properly. Those are the darkest moments, (often literally) just before dawn! This situation can be particularly crippling if you mostly work alone, too. Any thoughts or suggestions? Any methods that you found helpful yourself?

• Application/Server dependency mapping

  I'm just curious as to whether such as tool exists (free, open source, or commercial but for a reasonable price) before I build it myself. We're looking for a simple solution to simplify taking web apps online and offline when a server is undergoing maintenance. The idea is that we be able to mark a server as unavailable, and then mark all dependent (direct and indirect) as offline. Our first proof-of-concept is running, and we created an aspx page that lists various applications that have an App_Offline.html file with a friendly "Down for Maintenance" message in a GridView. In the GridView, each app has a LinkButton that, when clicked, either renames the App_Offline.htm to App_Offline.html or vice-versa to take the app online and offline. The next step is to set up all of our dependencies. For example, our store locater would be dependent on our web services, which in turn are dependent on our SQL Server. (that's a simple example. We can easily have several layers, or one app dependent on multiple servers, etc.) In this example, if the SQL server goes down, we would need to drill down recursively to find all apps that depend on it, and then turn them off and on by renaming the App_Offline file appropriately. I realize this will be relatively simple to build, but could be complex to manage. I'm sure we're not the first team to think of this concept, and I'm wondering if there are any open source tools, or if any of you have done something similar and can help us avoid pitfalls. Edit - Update I found the category of software I'm looking for. it's called CMDB - (Configuration Management Database), and it's generally more of a Network Admin type tool than a developer tool. I found some open source products in this category, but none written in .NET. I had considered moving this question to ServerFault.com when I realized I was looking for a netowrk Admin type tool, but since I'm looking for code and a modifiable solution I'll keep the question here.

• Error in Visual Studio 2008 with SSRS 2005 report projects

  Has anyone found a good workaound for opening or editing an SSRS 2005 report project with Visual Studio 2008 yet? Will the SQL server 2008 tools be the migration path for these report projects in the future? I really dont want to have to keep VS2005 installed forever just to update SSRS reports. After an upgrade to VS2008 an existing solution that contains a VS2005 SSRS reports project will not open. From what I understand the SQL Server 2005 tools dont know about VS2008 so they will not integrate into the IDE. So currently I switch back to VS2005 for any updates to this project, and get an error loading project message everytime I open the solution in 2008. EDIT on solution: I was able to install the shared component for BDIS from the SQL2008 disc and am now able to open and update my SSRS 2005 .rdl project items within VS2008. Note to others: If you edit your SSRS 2005 reports in VS2008 and re-save you will not be able to edit them in VS2005 anymore, or deploy them to a 2005 server. They are up-converted to 2008 report files.

• C# Windows Mobile 6.5 and TCP connections

  Hello, I am developing an application which makes a TCP connection out to our company server to pull down data and provide real-time data updates when the information changes. I am using the .NET Compact Framework for the development and the .NET Framework 3.5 (soon to update to 4.0) for the server-side TCP connection. I want to leave the connection open after the initial data is sent to the device from the server in order to keep the server in contact with the device should data updates need to be sent to the device. We already considered doing a WCF or connect/disconnect type of connection but we believe the overhead on the server for creating the session, transmitting and session cleanup would be unacceptable. (each device would be connecting every 60-90 seconds.) So, leaving the connection open is the best option. What I need to know is, when I leave the TCP connection open, do I need to manually transmit a heartbeat (and if so how do I do that with the .NET Compact Framework) or will the framework/stack do that for me? We have code that allows up to reconnect if the device gets disconnected (from network switching or a voice call) so that is handled. Thanks,

I have looked on the Internet and have not had much success in finding any useful information on the issue I am encountering. • Internet Explorer 8 64bit and Selenium Not working.

  I am trying to get selenium tests to run. Yet every time I try to run a tests that should run IE I get a error on line 863 of htmlutils.js It says that I should disable my popup blocker. The thing is I went to IE tools- turn of popup block. So it is disabled and I get this error. Is there something else I need to disable. I actually don't even know what version of Internet explorer it is running since I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit version. So when I do use IE I use 64bit version but I am under the understanding if the site or something like that does not support 64bit it goes to 32bit. So not sure what I need to do it to make it work.   there is an interesting page http://scotdoyle.com/python-epoll-howto.html about how to do asnchronous / non-blocking / AIO http serving in python 3. there is the tornado web server which does include a non-blocking http client. i have managed to port parts of the server to python 3.1, but the implementation of the client requires pyCurl and seems to have problems (with one participant stating how ‘Libcurl is such a pain in the neck’, and looking at the incredibly ugly pyCurl page i doubt pyCurl will arrive in py3+ any time soon). now that epoll is available in the standard library, it should be possible to do asynchronous http requests out of the box with python. i really do not want to use asyncore or whatnot; epoll has a reputation for being the ideal tool for the task, and it is part of the python distribution, so using anything but epoll for non-blocking http is highly counterintuitive (prove me wrong if you feel like it). oh, and i feel threading is horrible. no threading. i use stackless. people further interested in the topic of asynchronous http should not miss out on this talk by peter portante at PyCon2010; also of interest is the keynote, where speaker antonio rodriguez at one point emphasizes the importance of having up-to-date web technology libraries right in the standard library.

• LogonUser using LOGON32_LOGON_NEW_CREDENTIALS works against remote untrusted domain machine

  So between the two machines, there is no trust - they are in different domains. I've successfully connected to the remote machine using LogonUser API using logon type, *LOGON32_LOGON_NEW_CREDENTIALS*. I am able to retrieve the content of a directory using the UNC share, and create a file stream to "download" the file. So far so good. The only issue is that it seems, LogonUser fails unless there is an already open session. Let me clarify that. I found that the ASP.NET MVC page was not working this morning, specifically the page that retrieves the file list from this remote machine using LogonUser. I look at the log and I see in the stacktrace, *System.IO.__Error.WinIOError* above Directory.GetFiles call. I then remoted into the web server and tried to open the remote folder in the explorer using the same login/password used by the web site. It went through and I could see the files. I opened up the command prompt, type in net use, and I see that there is an open connection to the remote machine. Then I went back to the page and suddenly the page is working again. So, at this point, I am not exactly sure if the LogonUser is working as expected or not. If the call requires that a network connection opened first by other means, then this is certainly not satisfactory. Does anyone know what may be happening or suggest a workaround?

• How to improve Java perfomance on Informix for Windows

  I have problem with performance of Java UDR functions on Informix on Windows. On this server I already have some functions in C and SPL. I chose one function to write it in those 3 languages and I measured performance of this function on test table. Function calculates some kind of checksum so it not use any db libraries etc. only string and math operations. I observed performance on 30k records with SQL like: select function(txt) from _tmp_perf_test and I changed function to 'function_c, function_spl or function_java. My performance tests showed that C function is the fastest, SPL function is about 5 times slower, where Java is 100 (one hundred!) times slower than C. I checked it few times and 1:100 ratio didn't improve. I changed Java function to simply return length of the string but even this do not help so it looks, that there is general problem with Java function invocation, because there was no difference in time between Java function that calculate checksum and Java function that returns length of the string. I increased JVM_MAX_HEAP_SIZE to 128 and it not helped too. I use IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.TC6DE. The same test on Linux server: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC6 show more "normal" results, i.e. Java is slower from C and SPL but only 2 to 5 times. What can I do to improve Java performance on Informix server on Windows? I read that bmp file header is of 54 byte. But how and where should i append txt file in bmp file. ? • SQLite table does not exist exception for existing SQLite database (and table)

  I've followed the instructions given here for introducing an existing SQLite database to your Android app. When I query the table "android_metadata" this is fine. But when I run a similar query on my own table "words" (which has _id for primary integer key) I get a table does not exist exception and the app crashes. Why is that? Code: Cursor c = myDatabase.query("android_metadata", null, null, null, null, null, null, null); works but Cursor c = myDatabase.query("words", null, null, null, null, null, null, null); returns a table does not exist exception. • ADODB Connection String: Workgroup Information file is Missing?

  I have a few data sources in access that I need to connect to programatically to do things with behind the scenes and keep visibility away from users. Said datasource has a password 'pass' as I'm going to call it here. Using this connection method I get an error attempting to use the open method Dim conn as ADODB.Connection Set ROBBERS.conn = New ADODB.Connection conn.open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" _ & "Data Source=\\pep-home\projects\billing\autobilling\DPBilling2.mdb;" _ & "Jet OLEDB:Database Password=pass;", "admin", "pass" "Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user." Due to planning to move into 2007, we are not using nor have ever used a workgroup identification file through access. The database password on the data source was set through the Set Databa Password which had to be done on an exclusive open. Ive spent a good while changing around my connection options, where to put the passwords etc and either cannot find the right format, or (why I'm asking here) I think there may be some other unknown that I must setup to do this. Anyone out there got some useful information?

  I'm really trying to switch to emacs, but learning to setup the environment is a real pain. Everybody says it's worth it, so I just continue. I want my c code to be implemented that way: if(asdf) { asdr = 1; } Depending on the current standard (I know, don't get me started), could be: if(asdf) { asdr = 1; } I can't seem to change the indentation size from 2, it always looks like the GNU standard: if(asdf) { asdr = 1; } , which I dislike. Here is what I have put in my .emacs: ; Warn in C for while();, if(x=0), ... (global-cwarn-mode 1) ; no electric mode in c (c-toggle-electric-state -1) ; indent the current line only if the cursor is at the beginning of the line (setq-default c-tab-always-indent nil) (setq-default c-indent-level 4) (setq-default tab-width 4) (setq-default indent-tabs-mode nil) (setq-default c-basic-offset 4) (setq-default c-basic-indent 4) ; These commands I read about on the web, but they don't work? ;(highlight-tabs) ;(highlight-trailing_whitespace) This did not help, I have still the GNU indent.
