I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parentheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

Hi there, when creating a new ViewModel within the locator class using the snippet it creates a Cleanup Method but there is already one available from the Main so hence an error.... Should we merge them all?? Or should we be renaming the method to Cleanup[Name of viewmodel] for example. I am a little confused here Another question i would like to ask is regards to the naming conventions. I tried to follow the naming convention used with "MAIN"... hence i have CreateLogin, ClearLogin, Login (non static property for binding) etc etc.. Would it not be better to use CreateLoginViewModel, ClearLoginViewModel etc?? Just curious Thanks

Would the best way to do this be to create a public static Text property that is updated by the textbox's textchanged event? Also what would a developer do in order to interact with this text property? Would they add a reference to the program .exe in their program? Please help, I'm quite clueless here. Also was not sure how to word this question, feel free it edit if it is unclear.

How would you audit ASP.NET Membership tables, while recording what user made the changes?

Using a trigger-based approach to audit logging, I am recording the history of changes made to tables in the database. The approach I'm using (with a static sql server login) to record which user made the change involves running a stored procedure at the outset of each database connection. The triggers use this username when recording the audit rows. (The triggers are provided by the product OmniAudit.) However, the ASP.NET Membership tables are accessed primarily through the Membership API. I need to pass in the current user's identity when the Membership API opens its database connection. I tried subclassing MembershipProvider but I cannot access the underlying database connection. It seems like this would be a common problem. Does anyone know of any hooks we can access when the ASP.NET Membership makes its database connection?

If you wrap a call to HttpResponse.End within a try catch block, the ThreadAbortException would automatically be re-raised. I assume this is the case even if you wrap the try catch block in a try catch block. How can I accomplish the same thing? I have seen these approaches, none of them good for me (the above example is a toy example): Load the class (or a separate interface) by a class loader that is a parent of both the calling code and created classloader Serialize and deserialize the object.

My pages will be mostly static, with some database stored posts/links. The site will be simple, but I would like to have freedom in how it operates. I plan on using CSS/JS for the design, so I really just need an easy way to throw a small amount of content around. Does anyone know how to pass multiple parameters into a Thread.Start routine? I thought of extending the class, but the C# Thread class is sealed. Here is what I think the code would look like: ... ASP.NET UserControl Inheritence

I have a UserControl that is working fine. It is declared like this. public partial class DynamicList : System.Web.UI.UserControl { protected static BaseListController m_GenericListController = null; public DynamicList() { m_GenericListController = new GenericListController(this); } } Now I want to override this control so I can change some of the properties. I have created a class like this. public partial class JobRunningList : DynamicList { public JobRunningList() { m_GenericListController = new JobListController(this); (m_GenericListController as GenericListController).ModuleId = 14; } } It appears that the controls in the DynamicList are not getting created though when I use the JobRunningList control now causing predictably bad results. The DynamicList UserControl has a ListView on it and a few other controls. It appears these are not created when using the JobRunningList. Is there any secret to this?

Load properties file in JAR?

I'm having trouble when one of the jars that my web app depends on tries to load a properties file from within the jar. Here is the code in the jar. static { Properties props = new Properties(); try { props.load(ClassLoader.getSystemResourceAsStream("someProps.properties")); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } someProperty = props.getProperty("someKey"); } The properties file is in my "src/main/resources" directory of the Maven project. When I run this code from my junit test in Eclipse, it executes just fine. When the project is built with Maven into a jar, and included as a dependency in my webb app, it fails to locate the properties file. I know that the properties file is at the base directory of the depended on jar, I don't know how to fix this. Please help!

Limited IList<> implementation ?

Hello people, I'm doing some work with stats, and want to refactor the following method : public static blah(float[] array) { //Do something over array, sum it for example. } However, instead of using float[] I'd like to be using some kind of indexed enumerable (to use dynamic loading from disk for very large arrays for example). I had created a simple interface, and wanted to use it. public interface IArray<T> : IEnumerable<T> { T this[int j] { get; set; } int Length { get; } } My problem is : float[] only inherits IList, not IArray, and AFAIK there's no way to change that. I'd like to ditch IArray and only use IList, but my classes would need to implement many methods like Add, RemoveAt although they are fixed size And then my question : how can float[] implement IList whereas it doesn't have these methods ? Why does my server hang when I call a page over files_get_content?

I am trying to get content from a wordpress installation on a subdomain of my server. I tried that with file_get_content and also with Zend_Http_Client. $client = new Zend_Http_Client(Zend_Registry::get('CONFIG')->static->$name->$lang); $content = $client->request()->getBody(); As long as I run in on my localhost, it works fine. As soon as it runs on the same server as the subdomain, it hangs forever (timeout). How to add a timeout value when using Java's Runtime.exec()?

I have a method I am using to execute a command on the local host. I'd like to add a timeout parameter to the method so that if the command being called doesn't finish in a reasonable amount of time the method will return with an error code. Using Java Reflections to retrieve member classes

Hi All, I am using .getDeclaredClasses() method to retrieve all the classes that have been defined in object. However, I am not able to retrieve anonymous classes defined in the class. Supporting multiple versions without separate builds in JavaME

I want to be able to support multiple versions of Java ME without having to have multiple builds. I already know how to detect the profile/configuration/supported JSRs. My problem is that knowing whether the JSR is supported at run time doesn't allow me to use all the features. For if I call a function added in a later version anywhere in the code - even a location that will never be run, then this will be a compilation error due to static typing. Is there any way round this?

How to prevent a globally overridden "new" operator from being linked in from external library

In our iPhone XCode 3.2.1 project, we're linking in 2 external static C++ libraries, libBlue.a and libGreen.a. libBlue.a globally overrides the "new" operator for it's own memory management. However, when we build our project, libGreen.a winds up using libBlue's new operator, which results in a crash (presumably because libBlue.a is making assumptions about the kinds of structures being allocated). Both libBlue.a and libGreen.a are provided by 3rd parties, so we can't change any of their source code or build options. When we remove libBlue.a from the project, libGreen.a doesn't have any issues. However, no amount of shuffling the linking order of the libraries seems to fix the problem, nor does any experimentation with the various linking flags. Is there some way to tell XCode to tell the linker to "have libGreen's use of the new operator use the standard C++ new operator rather than the one redefined by libBlue"?

Using an XML Catalog with a Java library that uses JAXP internally

I'm using the Apache web service xml rpc library to make requests to an rpc service. Somewhere in that process is a xml document with a DTD reference to http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd, which the library attempts to download when parsing the XML. That download fails with a 503 status code because the w3c is blocking repeated downloads of this largely static document from Java clients. The solution is XML Catalogs to locally cache the DTD. However, while I can find examples of setting an EntityHandler on a JAXP SAXParser instance directly to enable catalog parser support, I don't actually have access to the underlying parser here. It's just being used by the xml rpc library. Is there any way I can set a global property or something that will tell JAXP to use XML catalogs?

CherryPy configuration tools.staticdir.root problem

Hi there, How can I make my static-file root directories relative to my application root folder (instead of a hard-coded path)? In accordance with CP instructions (http://www.cherrypy.org/wiki/StaticContent) I have tried the following in my configuration file: tree.cpapp = cherrypy.Application(cpapp.Root()) tools.staticdir.root = cpapp.current_dir but when I run cherrpy.quickstart(rootclass, script_name='/', config=config_file) I get the following error builtins.ValueError: ("Config error in section: 'global', option: 'tree.cpapp', value: 'cherrypy.Application(cpapp.Root())'. Config values must be valid Python.", 'TypeError', ("unrepr could not resolve the name 'cpapp'",)) I know I can do configuration from within the main.py file just before quickstart is called (eg. using os.path.abspath(os.path.dirname(file))), but I prefer using the idea of a separate configuration file if possible. Any help would be appreciated (in case it is relevant, I am using CP 3.2 with Python 3.1) TIA Alan

Netbeans GUI editor generating its own incomprehensible code.

When creating a new project in netbeans, if i select JAVA Desktop application, it creates some code which I DO NOT RECOGNISE AT ALL as what i had learnt in swing. It imports packages such as : org.jdesktop.application.SingleFrameApplication; also, the declaration for main() looks like this : public static void main(String[] args) { launch(DesktopApplication2.class, args); } This really does not make any sense to my knowledge of JFrame, JPanel etc.. If i try to code a netbeans application from scratch, i can write my own swing app BUT I CANNOT FIND THE GUI EDITOR. How do i bring the GUI editor when creating java application from scratch ? Can anyone explain to me this org.jdesktop.application.SingleFrameApplication and other classes ? Please help. This is really frustrating.
