• Kubuntu 11.04 bad experience, Gimp crashes and other bugs

  I installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit today. First let me expose some issues, this is not a rant, just some observations on Kubuntu 11.04 :) Flash doesn't work. The package "flashplugin-installer" was installed by rekonq. But still no flash. Additional Drivers (jockey-kde) doesn't show up automatically after first login. I tried to delete a large file (19,2 GB), an error appeared: "Please empty the trash first, no more space available" or something like that, but you know what? My trash was empty! (Then I found in Dolphin the settings to increment the max size of the trash). Amarok has no play/pause/forward/back buttons, only after changing settings to show those buttons on the top bar. GTK applications like ubuntu software center, inkscape... are in english, but my default language is "german". Only gimp allows to install the "de" language pack. The numblock turns off after each restart. In the KDE Control Center, the "remember last state" of numblock is set. But this is not working. I had some crashes: Nepomuk, Policy-kit, plasma-workspace and gimp. But now to the important stuff. I really need Gimp to work. After starting it, I get a crash: giowck@giowck-desktop:~$ gimp (gimp:1899): GLib-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.28.6/./glib/goption.c:2132: ignoring no-arg, optional-arg or filename flags (8) on option of type 0 Speicherzugriffsfehler (in English: "Memory error") What can I do to run Gimp? • What FOSS solutions are available to manage software requirements?

  In the company where I work, we are starting to plan to be compliant to the software development life cycle. We already have, wiki, vcs system, bug tracking system, and a continuous integration system. The next step we want to have is to start to manage, in a structured way, software requirements. We dont want to use a wiki or shared documentation because we have many input (developer, manager, commercial, security analyst and other) and we dont want to handle proliferation of .doc around the network share. We are trying to search and we hope we can find and use a FOSS software to manage all this things. We have about 30 people, and don't have a budget for commercial software. We need a free solution for requirements management. What we want is software that can manage: Required features: Software requirements divided in a structured configurable way Versioning of the requirements (history, diff, etc, like source code) Interdependency of requirements (child of, parent of, related to) Rule Based Access Control for data handling Multi user, multi project File upload (for graph, document related to or so on) Report and extraction features Optional Features: Web Based Test case Time based management (timeline, excepted data, result data) Person allocation and so on Business related stuff Hardware allocation handling I have already play with testlink and now i'm playing with RTH, the next one i try is redmine.

• Ubuntu installation does not recognize drive partitioning

  I have a 1TB drive and installed Windows 7 on a 128GB partition. When I now try to install Ubuntu 11.04 it does not recognize the Windows partition but offers the complete 1TB drive to install Ubuntu on instead. It displays: However, in the Ubuntu Disk Utility the Windows partitions are recognized. What do I need to do in order for Ubuntu to recognize the Windows 7 partition and install Ubuntu as a dual boot? • Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and US DoD Security guidelines

  I've worked in the past to help our government customers understand how best to secure Solaris.  For my customer base that means complying with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).  I recently worked with a team to apply both the Solaris and Oracle 11gR2 database STIGs to a SPARC SuperCluster.  The results have been published in an Oracle White paper. The SPARC SuperCluster is a highly available, high performance platform that incorporates: SPARC T4-4 servers Exadata Storage Servers and software ZFS Storage appliance InfiniBand interconnect Flash Cache  Oracle Solaris 11 Oracle VM for SPARC Oracle Database 11gR2 It is targeted towards large, mission critical database, middleware and general purpose workloads.  Using the Oracle Solution Center we configured a SSC applied DoD security guidance and confirmed functionality and performance of the system.  The white paper reviews our findings and includes a number of security recommendations.  In addition, customers can contact me for the itemized spreadsheets with our detailed STIG reports. Some notes: There is no DISA STIG  documentation for Solaris 11.  Oracle is working to help DISA create one using their new process. As a result, our report follows the Solaris 10 STIG document and applies it to Solaris 11 where applicable. In my conversations over the years with DISA Field Security Office they have repeatedly told me, "The absence of a DISA written STIG should not prevent a product from being used.  Customer may apply vendor or industry security recommendations to receive accreditation." • Partial upgrade on 12.04, how to stop nagging after locking to a working NVIDIA & xorg

  How to stop the upgrade manager from offering updates and upgrades that potentially would harm my working 2D and 3D graphics? Finally, I got 12.04 working as it should: with nvidia-173 drivers by downgrading xorg and locking the version: On my 32-bit system on Athlon64, with (Albatron) NVIDIA GeForce FX5700XT, locked (/pinned) to xorg 1:7.6-7ubuntu7, xserver-xorg-core 2:11.1-0obuntu10.07, nvidia-173 173.14.35-0ubuntu0.2? An annoying thing left is that every time the updates are checked, I get warning of partial updates, and ambiguous options of "partial update" and "close". Ambiguous in that sense that if I click close, I will get option to update a few packages, which has been OK, while "partial update" would like to update my kernel to 3.2, alter xorg, remove nvidia-173 etc., and update mesa etc. This is not what I call appropriate, after locking XORG and NVIDIA drivers to working ones. One may say according to package management logic it may be correct, but to me as an user it makes little sense. Last Ubuntu that worked without big mess for me was 10.10, hence I will not put 12.10 to my "production" system, until I can be sure it will not trash the system again. P.S. Is there a recommended way to keep NVIDIA GeForce FX working with 3D on Ubuntu... in future?

• PHP: A config file in .ini or .php format?

  I'm working on a huge CMS system, and I asked myself what configuration format I should use. There are two common formats for configuration files. The first one is an INI file, containg all the configuration properties. Then you can simply parse this INI file using build in PHP functions. A second option is to use a PHP file containing a regular PHP array with these configuration properties. Now, it's easier to edit an INI file, but a PHP file give's you more options, for example it allows you to add a function which retrieves one of the configuration options while reading the configuration file. Note: The PHP configuration file would only contain an array of configuration, no initialization functions or anything. (This is possible of course, but it's not implemented by default) Now, what is recommend for me to use as configuration file? What is the most common format for a configuration file? Should I go for simplicity with the INI files, or with a more dynamic one using PHP. One thing to note, this is not for personal usage. I'm planning to release the CMS system soon, and a lot of websites are scheduled already to change to my CMS system.

• cannot get upstart to run user job

  I am trying to get upstart start a user job during the boot of my machine. I have my conky.conf upstart config file in my $HOME/.init directory. • Should my dropdown of recently used items show items I no longer have access to

  We are implementing a client for our document management system. Part of this is the checkin screen where one of the fields a user chooses is the folder where the document should be checked into. In our original system, this was represented with a combobox where a user could hand type a folder path or select a path from a list of 5 folders they'd recently used for checking. It is possible that between the time they used the folder and the time they are doing the new checkin the user will no longer have access to the folder. At present, we still show the folder as an option and then, if the user chooses that folder, display an error message when the user submits the check in. We are thinking of removing these recently used folders the user doesn't have access to (we'll make a check when the form is instantiated) because why show an option if we know it will cause a failure (and another dialog message the user has to OK). However, an opposite opinion is that if we remove those folders, the users will think the system has "forgotten" their recent choices and will lose trust in what they are using. I'd like to get some opinions on the better user experience for this problem.

• Upstart: best way for shutdown hook?

  Hi, since Ubuntu relies on upstart for some time now, I would like to use an upstart job to gracefully shutdown certain applications on system shutdown or reboot. It is essential that the system's shutdown or reboot is stalled until these applications are shut down. The applications will be started manually on occasion, and on system shutdown should automatically be ended by a script (which I already have). Since the applications can't be ended reliably without (nearly all) other services running, ending the applications has to be done before the rest of the shutdown begins. I think I can solve this by an upstart job which will be triggered on shutdown, but I am unsure which events I should use in which manner. So far, I have read the following (partly contradicting) statements: There is no general shutdown event in upstart Use a stanza like "start on starting shutdown" in the job definition Use a stanza like "start on runlevel [06S]" in the job definition Use a stanza like "start on starting runlevel [06S]" in the job definition Use a stanza like "start on stopping runlevel [!06S]" in the job definition From these recommendations, the following questions arise: Is there or is there not a general shutdown event in Ubuntu's upstart? What is the recommended way to implement a "shutdown hook"? When are the events runlevel [x] triggered; is this when having entered the runlevel or when entering the runlevel? Can we use something like "start on starting runlevel [x]" or "start on stopping runlevel [x]"? What would be the best solution for my problem? Thank you very much, Binarus

• Implementing a multilanguage AI contest platform

  This is a followup to this question. To sum: I'm implementing an AI contest site, where each user may submit several AI implementations for different games. Think about Google AI Challenge but instead of just having a big event once a year, I would like it more on a league fashion, with all virtual players playing with each other every some close period of time. I want to support as many programming languages as possible. I've seen that contest sites (like codeforces) ask you to submit a source code and interact through stdin and stdout. The first question is: what is the best way of supporting multiple languages? As I see it, I can either ask people to upload some binary/script, and interact either through stdin/*stdout*, or sockets, or the file system; or ask people to submit source code, and wrap it with whatever is necessary for the interaction. I would like to skip the need to compile the code by myself (in the server, I mean), but I am willing to do it if its the "best" choice. I need to comunicate virtual players with each other, or even better, with some intermediary arbiter. The second question is regarding security. If I'm going to be running user code in my server, I want to ensure strict security conditions, like no file system access, no networking, etc. Otherwise it would be a safe heaven for hackers. I will be implementing the engine/arbiter in .NET. I would like to support at least C#, C++, Java and Python for the user's implementations. I'm willing to write interfaces for each of these languages to simplify the user interaction with the system. Thanks in advance.

• Xna Equivalent of Viewport.Unproject in a draw call as a matrix transformation

  I am making a 2D sidescroller and I would like to draw my sprite to world space instead of client space so I do not have to lock it to the center of the screen and when the camera stops the sprite will walk off screen instead of being stuck at the center. In order to do this I wanted to make a transformation matrix that goes in my draw call. I have seen something like this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3570192/xna-viewport-projection-and-spritebatch I have seen Matrix.CreateOrthographic() used to go from Worldspace to client space but, how would I go about using it to go from clientspace to worldspace? I was going to try putting my returns from the viewport.unproject method I have into a scale matrix such as: blah = Matrix.CreateScale(unproject.X,unproject.Y,0); however, that doesn't seem to work correctly.   I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 on a new (empty) hard disk (because the previous crashed) Since I am quite familiar with Debian, I created two accounts with the adduser command. Since I am also having an NFSv3 file system, I explictly gave user ids when creating them (for simplicity, I keep the same user id on the home server, running Debian; the user names contain digits; I'm not using LDAP), e.g. # grep bethy /etc/passwd bethy46:x:501:501:Bethy XXX,,,06123456:/home/bethy:/bin/bash # grep bethy /etc/group bethy64:x:501: # grep bethy /etc/shadow bethy46:$6$vQ-wmuchmorethings-2o/:15479:0:99999:7:: Of course /home/bethy exists The actual user name is slightly different, and I am not showing the real entries (for obvious privacy reasons) However, these users don't appear at graphical login prompt (lightdm). And they exist in the system, they have entries in /etc/passwd & /etc/shadow and I (partly) restored their /home I've got no specific user config under /etc/lightdm ; file /etc/lightdm/users.conf mentions # NOTE: If you have AccountsService installed on your system, then LightDM # will use this instead and these settings will be ignored but I have no idea of how to deal with AccountsService thru the command line As you probably guessed, I really dislike doing administrative tasks thru a graphical interface; I much prefer the command line What did I do wrong? How can a user entry not appear in lightdm graphical login? (I need to have my wife's user entry apparent for graphical login). I am not asking how to hide a user, but how to show it in lightdm graphical prompt work-around As I have been told in comments by Nirmik and by Enzotib, lightdm probably don't show any users of uid less than 1024. So I changed all the uid to be more than 8200 (including on the Debian NFS server) and this made all the users visible at the graphical prompt. It is a pain that such a threshold is not really documented.

• Best way to make a shutdown hook?

  Since Ubuntu relies on upstart for some time now, I would like to use an upstart job to gracefully shutdown certain applications on system shutdown or reboot. It is essential that the system's shutdown or reboot is stalled until these applications are shut down. The applications will be started manually on occasion, and on system shutdown should automatically be ended by a script (which I already have). Since the applications can't be ended reliably without (nearly all) other services running, ending the applications has to be done before the rest of the shutdown begins. I think I can solve this by an upstart job which will be triggered on shutdown, but I am unsure which events I should use in which manner. So far, I have read the following (partly contradicting) statements: There is no general shutdown event in upstart Use a stanza like "start on starting shutdown" in the job definition Use a stanza like "start on runlevel [06S]" in the job definition Use a stanza like "start on starting runlevel [06S]" in the job definition Use a stanza like "start on stopping runlevel [!06S]" in the job definition From these recommendations, the following questions arise: Is there or is there not a general shutdown event in Ubuntu's upstart? What is the recommended way to implement a "shutdown hook"? When are the events runlevel [x] triggered; is this when having entered the runlevel or when entering the runlevel? Can we use something like "start on starting runlevel [x]" or "start on stopping runlevel [x]"? What would be the best solution for my problem? Thank you very much

• Update Error: Require Installation Of Untrusted Packages

  I have googled and found out Updates don't install because of "untrusted packages". It didn't fixed the error. So, how do I fix my GUI update? Updated sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade < working The following packages will be upgraded: ambiance-colors radiance-colors 2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 5,029 kB of archives. After this operation, 7,614 kB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! ambiance-colors radiance-colors Install these packages without verification [y/N]? Working but when I update from GUI or try to install software from Ubuntu Software Center I got same error as shown in above picture. For every software I have to install it from command line because I got same error when install software from Ubuntu Software Center.
