• Future of a ServiceStack based Solution in the Context of Licensing

  I just want someone to clarify the following questions as Demis Bellot had announced a couple of weeks ago that ServiceStack would go commercial. Refer link below. https://plus.google.com/app/basic/stream/z12tfvoackvnx1xzd04cfrirpvybu1nje54 (Please note that when I say ServiceStack or SS I refer to all associated SS libraries such as ServiceStack.Text, etc.) If I have a solution already developed using ServiceStack today will I have to purchase a license once SS goes commercial even if I don't upgrade the SS binaries to the commercial release version? Will previous versions of SS (prior to commercial licensing) always be opensource and use the same license as before? If I fork SS today (prior to commercial licensing) on Github, would it be illegal to maintain that after SS goes commercial? If the answer to question 2 is yes, then would I still be able to fork a previous version after SS goes commercial without worrying about the commercial license (all the while maintaining and releasing the source to the public)?

• DockbarX Applet not loading

  I used to have dockbarX applet installed on my gnome panel. However one day when I login in I got a error message which can be seen in the screenshot below. So I removed it, and then tried adding it again to the gnome panel but I still get the error message. I am running the latest version of dockbarX 0.43 with the helpers enabled and media buttons etc. I did not update it recently and have been using this version for a couple of weeks now and got this problem only now. How can I solve this problem?

• Wrong package for Idle-python2.7?

  I'm running python 2.7 in Ubuntu 3.10, and idle (idle-python2.7) has stopped working. Whenever I try to open a file in a editor window, it is blank, though the file does exist and is not empty/blank. Furthermore, it is not possible to close idle after this, except via a terminal kill command. Idle was working fine before. The problem appeared after I installed a number of things, including idlex, various scipy modules and mpmath, but after trying to repair it in several ways, it seems to be caused by Ubuntu's official idle package. I get this error in the terminal when trying to open a file in idle: Exception in Tkinter callback [...lines ommitted for brevity...] File "/usr/lib/python2.7/idlelib/IOBinding.py", line 129, in coding_spec for line in lst: NameError: global name 'lst' is not defined If you look at the code, it looks like an obvious bug: indeed lst is not defined in the function coding_spec. Furthermore, the source file IOBinding.py in http://fossies.org/dox/Python-2.7.5/IOBinding_8py_source.html is different and doesn't show the problem. Thinking that one of the recently packages had overwritten the file somehow, I've tried a number of things, including reinstalling all Python packages from synaptic, but the wrong IOBinding.py is still there. The reason I think the problem lies with the package itself is that I finally did sudo apt-get remove idle, verified that the idlelib directory was empty, and reinstalled with sudo apt-get install idle; but the wrong IOBinding.py file came back again. I can in fact make idle work again by simply replacing lst by str in the code, but to me that's clearly a no-no. I'm not to happy either about trying to replace just that file from the source python distribution, as other files may be wrong. I want to get the right files from the official package.

• Error message when running OpenGL programs with bumblebee

  X Error of failed request: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 152 (DRI2) Minor opcode of failed request: 8 (DRI2SwapBuffers ) Resource id in failed request: 0x4200005 Serial number of failed request: 2166 Current serial number in output stream: 2167 primus: warning: timeout waiting for display worker Segmentation fault (core dumped) I don't get this on all OGL programs, but only particularly GPU intense ones. Also, I only get this using primusrun. optirun gives the same error no matter what I run: [VGL] NOTICE: Pixel format of 2D X server does not match pixel format of [VGL] Pbuffer. Disabling PBO readback. I don't know what either of these mean. Neither of them stop the programs from running, but I'd like to fix the problem if there is one. Also, I prefer to use primusrun because it is faster and it does a better job with vertical sync, however, it only supports OGL 4.2. This isn't a big issue because the programs I write are forward compatible, but it still seems odd to me. So basically I'd just like it if someone could explain to me what is happening and if there is something I can do about it. Thanks.

• More Tables or More Databases?

  I got an e-mail from someone that has an interesting situation. He has 15,000 customers, and he asks if he should have a database for their data per customer. Without a LOT more data it’s impossible to say, of course, but there are some general concepts to keep in mind. Whenever you’re segmenting data, it’s all about boundary choices. You have not only boundaries around how big the data will get, but things like how many objects (tables, stored procedures and so on) that will be involved, if there are any cross-sections of data (do they share location or product information) and – very important – what are the security requirements? From the answer to these types of questions, you now have the choice of making multiple tables in a single database, or using multiple databases. A database carries some overhead – it needs a certain amount of memory for locking and so on. But it has a very clean boundary – everything from objects to security can be kept apart. Having multiple users in the same database is possible as well, using things like a Schema. But keeping 15,000 schemas can be challenging as well. My recommendation in complex situations like this is similar to a post on decisions that I did earlier – I lay out the choices on a spreadsheet in rows, and then my requirements at the top in the columns. I  give each choice a number based on how well it meets each requirement. At the end, the highest number wins. And many times it’s a mix – perhaps this person could segment customers into larger regions or districts or products, in a database. Within that database might be multiple schemas for the customers. • How to find the /dev name of my USB device

  I am running Ubuntu 11 on VmWare on Windows XP. I want to format an SD card in Ubuntu. But, I can't figure out which /dev/xxx device the SD card is. I plug the card into the built-in socket of my laptop. I "safely remove" the device in Windows. Then, I "connect" the PCMCIA reader in VmWare. Now, I was supposing to see a new device like /dev/sdx. But, it doesn't appear :( How can I find what the name of my USB device's name and mount it? /var/log/message is empty. • svn vs git for the sole developer? [closed]

  If I am sole developer (I do not work in a team) working from my laptop (Windows OS and Linux VM) and backing up data to the cloud (Dropbox etc), then is git still better than svn for my version control needs? I was thinking not since I wont need any of git's distributed features. But is git such a better approach to version control that I should consider moving anyway? With so many articles saying how people are moving from svn to git? I was wondering, if they are talking about large or open projects with teams of developers vs the sole developer. What do you think?

  To ensure your SQL Server or Azure databases remain safe, you should backup your databases periodically. And it is important to store the backups in a reliable location. Microsoft SkyDrive currently offers 7GB free, Box offers 5GB free – both are reliable and it is simple to send your backups there. SQLBackupAndFTP in it’s latest version 9 added the option to backup to SkyDrive and Box ( in addition to local/network folder, NAS drive, FTP, Dropbox, Google Drive and Amazon S3). Just select the databases that you’d like to backup and select to store the backups in SkyDrive or Box. Below I will show you how to do it in details Select databases to backup First connect to your SQL Server or Azure Sql Database. Then select the databases you’d like to backup. Connect to SkyDrive or Box cloud If you have a free version of SQLBackupAndFTP Box destination is included, but SkyDrive destination will be disabled as it is available in the Standard version or above. Click “Try now” to get 30 days trial on all options On the “SkyDrive Settings” form you’ll need to authorize SQLBackupAndFTP to access your SkyDrive. Click “Authorize…” to open SkyDrive authorization page in your browser, sign in your to SkyDrive account and click at “Allow” . On the next page you will see the field with authorization code. Copy it to the clipboard. Box operation is just the same. After that return to SQLBackupAndFTP, paste the authorization code and click “OK” . After you are authorized, you can enter the path to a backup folder. SQLBackupAndFTP will create the folder if it does not exist. That’s all what has to be done to backup to SkyDrive or Box cloud.  You can now click on “Run Now” button to test this job. Conclusion Whatever is your preference for storing SQL backups, it is easy with SQLBackupAndFTP. • Zoom out recursively for all the folders

  I want to reduce the icons size in all the folders. In ubuntu 11.10, version, there is an option to decrease icons size and I changed there, and all the icons size is reduced recursively. I am using 11.10 version now. Here, whichever folder I open every time I need to zoom out.(I want zoom out). If I have 20 recursive folders, I open each and every folder and right click there and zoom out. Do we have any global command or grapical tool to reduce the icons size in all the folders. I was told that unity will do this work but I am confused how to use it. If unity is the only solution, please guide me where to change the size. Thanks a ton, Thanks, Chaitanya.

  I mentioned this awhile back on twitter, but UppercuT (UC) has support for Mercurial for versioning your assemblies. In the settings file, all you need to do it tell UC to use hg. When you build your assemblies, they will use the changeset number in the version, and in the informational version, you get the hash, just like you do when using Git. Pretty sweet. By the way, UC also supports .NET 4.0 as of last week. With this knowledge you shall build.

• Error installing Windows7 64 bits on VirtualBox

  I am trying to set up Windows in Virtual Box, so I don't need to reboot in the rare occasion that I actually need it. The problem is, Virtual Box doesn't preform any errors when I insert the 32bit installation CD but when I try to use the 64bit installation; What!? I am already using the installation disc! I've checked my BIOS to see if I have SVM (AMD's version of VT) disabled and all I see is "Enabled" I have a K9N6PGM2-V2 motherboard A Triple Core AMD Athlon II A Nvdia NForce 430 integrated graphics card 4GB of RAM An 80GB IDE And a 1TB SATA I don't think the last three specifications matter but just in case XP I am pretty sure the CD isn't broken ( I am going to make sure in just a moment ), what could be the cause to this problem? Edit: The 64bit installation CD is not broken, but I found out when trying to install from the 32bit version that it's trying to upgrade, not preform a fresh install - Odd.

  I have a table that contains a number of values representing Excel serial dates. After a number of unsuccessful attempts to compare fields, my current approach is to do comparisons between serial dates instead of calendar dates. I am trying to summarize the data--by DAY--with formulae. While I can see how to do this by creating additional dates column formatted as =TEXT(<DateField>,"mm/dd/yyyy") I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to handle this 'conversion' in the formula, e.g.SUMIF((TEXT(<dateRange>,"yy/mm/dd"),=(TEXT(<dateField,"yy/mm/dd")),<dataRange> Make sense? • Is there a way to determine the original size or file count of a 7-zip archive?

  I know that when I compress an archive with the 7za utility, it gives me stats like the number of files processed and the amount of bytes processed (the original size of the data). Is it possible, using the commandline (on linux) or some programming language, to determine: the original size of an archive, before it was compressed? the number of files/directories contained within an archive? The answer might be "no, just decompress the whole archive and do counting/sizing then", but it would be useful to know if there was a faster/less space-greedy way.

• Create a form as a worksheet in Excel that adds records to another worksheet

  I am trying to create a form in Excel for vehicle requests. What I want to happen is to create one worksheet that is a recreation of the current paper form, but have a clickable button that will enter all the data for the vehicle request as a record on a second worksheet. Conversely, if you know the record number, I want the form to auto-flll the information from that record number. I have the second part figured out, that should be a simple HLOOKUP, but I don't know how to generate the clickable button. Will I need to use scripting for this, or is there an pre-built way of doing this? (As an aside, I know there are other and better ways of accomplishing database work, but the nature of my work makes Excel the best choice)

  I have AMD Radeon HD 4850, with the latest drivers. I just dont get several things, what is x.org? What is FGLRX? Also, what is RandR? And why in the info section of the control centre it says Catalyst version is 12.6, but Catalyst control centre is 2.14, what is the difference between Catalyst and Catalyst control centre? Also, why is the Driver packaging version 8.98 while the Driver package says 12.6? I am extremely confused! As well as in the installer, what is the difference between choosing "Install Driver 8.98 on X.Org 6.9 or later" and "Generate Distribution Specific Driver Package"?

• RDA and Fusion Middleware Diagnostic Framework Integration

  Further to my last blog entry "FMw Diagnostic Framework : Automatic Capture of Diagnostic Data Upon First Failure!" I have spent some time exploring how Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA) integrates with Diagnostic Framework. Remote Diagnostic Agent, by default, collects the information about the last 10 incidents which have been captured in the Automatic Diagnostic Repository (ADR). This information can be located via RDA's Start Page Menu system. See screenshot below. Screenshot - Viewing Diagnostic Framework Incident Information in a RDA Package Note: In the next release of RDA - version 4.30 - the Diagnostic Repository menu label will have it's own position in the weblogic managed server sub menu hierarchy rather than be a child menu item of the logs menuDiagnostic Framework is also capable of launching RDA engine and including the output in an incident package. This is achieved via the command "IPS GENERATE PACKAGE". The RDA output is written to DOMAIN_HOME/servers/<server name>/adr/diag/ofm/<domain name>/<server name>/incpkg/pkg_[number]/seq_[number]/rda The RDA collected files are best viewed (as shown in the screenshot above) by opening the RDA Start Page - "DFW__start.htm" - from this directory in a browser. If you do not have a browser available on the host machine, zip the contents of the rda directory and transfer and extract to a machine which has a browser.  The explanation of the integration goes a little deeper. • How can I make my main character move in a parabolic arc when jumping?

  I'm entering Android game development, and I already have a computer version of a game I want to publish. The thing is, I want to make this as good as it can be. With that said, I need a physics engine, really to only do one thing: make a parabolic movement of my main character as he's jumping in the air. Currently, my computer version simply makes the guy move up at a 45 degree angle, and as soon as it hits the ceiling, down at a 45 degree angle. I need a physics engine/library that would accomplish that, it has to be in java since that's my best language, it has to be 2D, and it has to be able to work on Android. Which physics engine/library could accomplish all of that?

• Date calculation algorithm

  I'm working on a project to schedule a machine shop, basically I've got everything covered BUT date calculations, I've got a method called schedule (working on PHP here): public function schedule($start_date, $duration_in_minutes) Now my problem is, currently I'm calculating end time manually because time calculations have the following rules: During weekdays, work with business hours (7:00 AM to 5:00 PM) Work on Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM Ignore holidays (in Colombia we have A LOT of holidays) I already have a lookup table for holidays, I also have a Java version of this algorithm that I wrote for a previous version of the project, but that one's also manual. Is there any way to calculate an end time from a start time given duration?, my problem is that I have to consider the above rules, I'm looking for a (maybe?) math based solution, however I currently don't have the mind to devise such a solution myself. I'll be happy to provide code samples if necessary.
