  • Uploading a file to AppEngine using GWT: How to provide feedback to the user?

    Hello everyone, I have a GWT-FormPanel on my website, where people can upload pictures and answer some questions. It's working very well. The only problem is: I would like to provide a feedback to the user (for example: 0% to 100%) during the actual file process. But I have no idea how I can do that. I think that's a very common issue, that's why I would like to ask you guys if you know any tutorial or example that could help me to solve this problem. I've already tried GWT-Upload, but it does not do what I want: I have a submit button at the end of the FormPanel and the GWTUpload has it's own "SEND" button, which I don't want to have.     I wanted to write a simple chrome extension in order to substitute the following sequence of steps which i have to do very often for university: make screenshot of something edit screenshot in Paint save unnamend.png to harddrive upload unnamed.png to imageshack.us/pic-upload.de or any other website share link of image with others. I don't care which image upload service to use, i just want automize this use-case in order to save time (I already red and did a getting-started chrome extension and checked out their API, but that's it, this page: http://farter.users.sourceforge.net/blog/2010/11/20/accessing-operating-system-clipboard-in-chromium-chrome-extensions/ seemed useful, but i couldn't make it overwrite my systems clipboard - moreover i can't find a tutorial which helps me further).

  • How fast are App Engine db.get(keys) and A.all(keys_only=True).filter('b =', b).fetch(1000)?

    A db.get() of 50 keys seems to take me 5-6 seconds. Is that normal? What is the time a function of? I also did a A.all(keys_only=True).filter('b =', b).fetch(1000) where A.b is a ReferenceProperty. I did 50 such round trips to the datastore, with different values of b, and the total time was only 3-4 seconds. How is this possible? db.get() is done in parallel, with only one trip to the datastore, and I would think that looking up an entity by key is a faster operation than fetch.

  • task strategies for handling HardDeadlineExceededError

    I've got a number of tasks/servlets that are hitting the HardDeadlineExceededError which is leaving everything hanging in an 'still executing' state. The work being done can easily exceed the 29 second threshold. I try to catch the DeadlineExceededException and base Exception in order to save the exit state but neither of these exception handlers are being caught... Is there a way to determine which tasks are in the queue or currently executing? Are there any other strategies for dealing with this situation?

    I'm working on GAE-J/GWT app, wherein a desktop app connects to the GAE-J component, and there is also a web-app component whose front-end is written in GWT, and the GAE-J backend supports both the desktop app and the web app. I have a good amount of experience with writing pure server code and desktop code, but not so much on the web-app side of things. So I'm looking to study some good sophisticated open source code to see how other's have done things, but I can't find much open source GWT and/or GAE-J stuff, other than frameworks. Does anyone know of any good projects out there?

    Sorry that I could not compile jsfiddle because it's jsf application hosted locally and code is dependent on data from jsf application. Although I have arrange part of it and part if it as snippet here. Now Everything's correct in Firefox. Suddenly when I open it in chrome something happened. The text on raphael paper suddenly gets scattered in the paper. It's not where it's meant to be. This happens when I convert svg to image and again generate svg. Everything works fine in Firefox.   • Recommendations with hierarchical data on non-relational databases?

    I'm developing an web application that uses a non-relational database as a backend (django-nonrel + AppEngine). I need to store some hierarchical data (projects/subproject_1/subproject_N/tasks), and I'm wondering which pattern should I use. For now I thought of: Adjacency List (store the item's parent id) Nested sets (store left and right values for the item) In my case, the depth of nesting for a normal user will not exceed 4-5 levels. Also, on the UI, I would like to have a pagination for the items on the first level, to avoid to load too many items at the first page load. From what I understand so far, nested sets are great when the hierarchy is used more for displaying. Adjacency lists are great when editing on the tree is done often. In my case I guess I need the displaying more than the editing (when using nested sets, even if the display would work great, the above pagination could complicate things on editing). Do you have any thoughts and advice, based on your experience with the non-relational databases?

  • "Detecting" and loading of "plugins" in GAE

    Hi! I have a "plugin like" architecture and I want to create one instance of each class that implements a dedicated interface and put these in a cache. (To have a singleton-ish effect). The plugins will be provided as jars and put into the app engine war file before the app is uploaded. I have tried to use the ClassPathScanningCandidateComponentProvider as I'm using spring anyway, but this didn't work. The provider complained that it was not able to find the HttpServletResponse class file while scanning the classpath. I can't get around this, when I add the servlet jar, then I'll get of course problems, because the same jar is also provided by the GAE. If I don't, I'm getting the error above... So I tried to add a static initialization code, but of course this doesn't work, because the class is initialized when it's instantiated for the first time. (Well I knew that but it was worth a try) The last chance I currently see is that I create a properties file with all plugin classes when the package is created, but this requires writing of a maven plugin etc. and I'd like to avoid that. Is there something that I am missing?

    In chrome, safari, and opera setting the background image to an absolute reference such as: "/images/image.png" changes it to "http://sitepath/images/image.png". It does not do this in firefox. Is there any way to avoid this behavior, or is it written into the browser's javascript engine? Using jquery to set the background-image also does this problem. The problem is that I am posting the HTML to a php script that needs the urls in this specific format. I know that setting the image path relative fixes this, but I can't do that. The only other alternative would be to use a regexp. to convert the urls. Thanks.     I have a controller that's inheriting from a base controller, and I'm wondering how I can utilize all of the logic from the base controller, but return a different view than the base controller uses. The base controller populates a model object and passes that model object to its view, but I'm not sure how I can access that model object in the child controller so that I can pass it to the child controller's view.

    I got so confused loading javascript in app engine. I am using django template. In my base html file. First I can't load my downloaded jquery from local say d:/jquery.js like <script src="d:\jquery.js" type="text/javascript" ></script></head>, This line is in my base html file. It works when I load jquery from remote. Like <script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5.1/jquery.min.js"type="text/javascript" ></script></head> I dont know why. Second, I can't load my own-created javascript to my html file, say I create a javascript like layout. Js and I try to load it like this in my child html file, which, by the way, inherits from the base html. <body><script src="layout.js" type="text/javascript"></script></body>, And it doesn't work at all, the only way it works I have tried is that I put the actual javascript in the body of my base html file. Like <body><script> $(document).ready( $("#yes"). Click(function() { $("#no"). Hide("slow"); })); </script> I dont know why either... Any help?

    I'm making a game for the iPhone, and I have a class called Robot. Then I have a class called View, which renders everything. I want to send a copy of my Robot, which I defined in my ViewController, and I send it to gameView (which is View *gameView), like this: robot = [Robot new]; [gameView setRobot: [robot copy]]; I tried to make a copy but that didn't work, I could also do it with a pointer to Robot (&robot) but sometimes it just crashes ? I tried this in my View.h @interface definition: @property (copy) Robot* robot; but I get the error /RobotsAdventure/Classes/View.h:24: error: setter '-robot' argument type does not match property type :/ Help? I'm pretty new at this, heh.
