• Dead drive in LVM/XFS configuration

  I had three drives in LVM: a 2 TB drive and two 1 TB drives (added later). One of the 1 TB drives -- I believe the third one -- has died. Spanning all three drives was an XFS partition. Reading: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/appnote/19386.html I see that one way of handling this is to replace the dead drive and copy the metadata over. However, I am currently not in possession of a 1 TB drive and can not readily acquire one. Given this, what are my options? There was nothing important on the drives (if there was I would have them in RAID 1) but I would not mind attempting a recovery. Is there a simple way of forcing LVM to go with just two drives and NUL out anything else? (So that fsck can do its thing.)

• Which firewall ports do I need to open in order for a domain trust to work?

  I have two Active Directory domains in two different forests; each domain has two DCs (all of them Windows Server 2008 R2). The domains are also in different networks, with a firewall connecting them. I need to create a two-way forest trust between the two domains and forest. How do I configure the firewall to allow this? I found this article, but it doesn't explain very clearly which traffic is required between DCs, and which traffic (if any) in needed instead between domain computers in one domain and DCs for the other one. I'm allowed to permit all traffic between the DCs, but allowing computers in one network to access DCs in the other one would be a little more difficult.

• Windows 2008 Server can't connect to FTP

  I have Windows 2008 Server R2, and I am trying to install FTP services. My problem is I can't connect from outside, FileZilla complains with: Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server Here is what I did. With the Server Manager, I've installed the Roles FTP Server, FTP Service and FTP Extensibility. In Internet Information Services version 7.5, I've chosen Add FTP Site, enabled Basic Authentication, Allow a user to connect Read and Write. In FTP Firewall support on the main server, just after start page, I've set Data Channel Port Range to 49100-49250 and set the external IP Address as the one I see from outside. If I click on FTP IPv4 Address and Domain Restrictions, and click on Edit Feature Settings, I see that access for unspecified clients is set to Allow, so I click OK without changing those defaults. In FTP SSL Policy, I've set to Require SSL connection, certificate is self signed. I tried to connect with FileZilla from the same host and it works, however it doesn't work remotely, as I said above. I've enabled pfirewall.log, but apparently nothing gets logged. The server is in Amazon EC2, and on the security group inbound firewall rules, I've set that ports 21 and ports 49100-49250 accepts connections from everywhere. What else should I be checking to solve the problem?

• PHP on several servers with session-sharing

  there's certanly other threads about this, but I have one more question. We are about to scale the website at work to have more than one server. And we need to share the sessions between the servers. We have been looking into different solutions, one in memcached and use Memcached as sessionhandler in PHP. That will probably work. And the idea would be to run memcached on every machine and let all webservers access all other servers memcached servers, and then we have shared sessions between the machines, yay. (we have no resources to setup with sticky-sessions yet, that's a later project. we need this running, and we need this running now. and we will loadbalance with DNS for a starter) But then... If I want to take one server down, say, for maintenance, or a server crashes, or whatever reason. I don't want the users to just loose their sessions and have to start from the beginning... That's why we need some kind of replication, which Memcached does not support. Then I found http://repcached.lab.klab.org/ -- which has multi-master replication of memcached, which is great, and is what I want. But does it work with 2 machines? Say 3, 5, 10? For future scaling. I also looked into redishttp://redis.io/ -- which also seems great, but is a bit more "shaky" with the php-session-handler support, and no multi-master-replication. The thing is that I like to use memcached, but I want to be able to power down one of two boxes without loosing half of the sessions. Any suggestions?

• Best Practice: Migrating Email Boxes (maildir format)

  So here's the situation. I've got about 20,000 maildir email accounts chewing up a several hundred GB of space on our email server. Maildir by nature keeps thousands of tiny a** little files, instead of one .mbox file or the like... So i need to migrate all of these several millions of files from one server to the other, for both space and life-cycle reasons. the conventional methods i would use all work just fine. rsync is the option that comes immediately to mind, however i wanted to see if there are any other "better" options out there. Rsync not handling multi-threaded transfers in this situation sucks because it never actually gets up to speed and saturates my network connection, because of this the transfer from one server to another will take hours beyond hours, when it shouldn't really take more then one or two. I know this is highly opinionated and subjective and will therefore be marked community wiki.

  A lot of time I already spent to find a suitable plugin (or addon) for mozilla thunderbird gmail conversation view. I found this : https://addons.mozilla.org/af/thunderbird/addon/gmail-conversation-view/ but it is just not compatible with my thunder bird version.. what I need to solve is: if one of my friends sends an email to me and another 10 friends. and everyone write a response. I can not read all in one mail (one by one). But I have to open 10 new emails. and is very hard to look over all. so can I have it like in Gmail? • Why do some machines respond with many RST packets instead of RST-ACK to refuse a connection?

  I have recently been trying to track down a problem with one of our systems and have noticed that it is simply not allowed to connect to a remote machine. However, the remote machine (not controlled by us) is responding to our request for a connection with many TCP RST packets on a different port (26469, 26497, 26498) than the one we originated on (53). It simply wouldn't let up at one point and flooded us with about 10 packets/second for an hour or two of only RST on those obscure high ports. Out of the thousands of nodes we're connecting to, this is the only one ever to show this behavior. What could possibly cause this? EDIT Below is a screenshot of Wireshark when it happened. I don't have the actual dump anymore and can't reproduce this specific scenario every time. Basically, we sent a SYN and immediately got RST on an odd port and so we respond with RST and just keep going back and forth.

They each will install one application and they each require two or three databases. Should they all use the same instance or should every provider use it's own named instance?   assume i have a domain name which will be forwarded to my public ip (web server) automatically. in IIS 6, ip is public ip port is 6666, advanced - host value is www.hello.com firewall is open for 6666(web server port) and 53(DNS port), DMZ of router is my physical address in DNS, i have already had a zone called oldhello.com. And i expect a new domain name. So i have addded a new zone called hello.com and checked SOA server (P) is one.hello.local. then added a new host called one, full name is one.hello.com, ip address 192.168.7.3(my address in router) and then add a alias(CNAME) www, full name is www.hello.com, FQDN i choose the host i added before (one.hello.com) i expected that when i type the public ip in browser, can it be changed to domain name automatically. if not set host value www.hello.com, use public ip i can see the web however, after set up host value www.hello.com, browser show bad request invalid hostname

• NAT via iptables and virtual interface

  I'm trying to implement the following scenario: One VM-host, multiple guest VMs, each one gets its own IP-address (and domain). Our server has only one physical interface, so the intended use is to add virtual interfaces on eth0. To complicate our situation the provider uses port-security on their switches, so I can't run the guest interfaces in bridged mode, because then the switch detects a "spoofed" MAC-address and kills the interface (permanently, forcing me to call the support, which I'm sure will get them a little bit angry the third time ;) ). My first guess was to use iptables and NAT to forward all packages from one virtual interface to another one, but iptables doesn't seem to like virtual interfaces (at least I can't get it to work properly). So my second guess is to use the source IP of the packages to the public interface. Let's assume libvirt creates a virbr0-network with 192.168.100.0/24 and the guest uses 192.168.100.2 as IP-address. This is what I tried to use: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING --src public_ip_on_eth0:0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.100.2:80 That doesn't give me the intended results either (accessing the server times out). Is there a way to do what I'm trying to do, or even to route all traffic to a certain IP on a virtual interface to the VM's device?

• What methods are there to configure puppet to serve resources for multiple environments?

  I seem to come across two ways for using puppet in multiple environments: 1) Install a puppetmaster in each environment and only update the recipes from source control for that environment when ready to deploy the recipes in that environment. 2) Use one puppetmaster and use a variable in the puppet.conf of each client to specify the environment and then in the puppetmaster specify a different modulepath for each environment and each of those paths is updated to the branch of the recipe repository intended for that environment (e.g. dev, staging, production). Only running one puppetmaster seems like it is one less piece of infrastructure to keep running but there is some additional complexity in the configuration. Are there additional pros or cons to one of these methods or something which I'm missing entirely?

  Possible Duplicate: FireFox Gmail Notifier Plugin? Any body else have this problem? For the last 2-3 days it's not been working. I thought it might have been caused by another add-on, either a new one or updated one, so I disabled each one individually till I did them all. No luck. Haven't made any other changes to my system, Windows XP SP3.

• Can IOS be upgraded on a Cisco Catalyst 6509 switch without downtime?

We need to upgrade IOS; current version is 12.2.something (I can check exactly which one, if this does matter). Can this be done without service interruption? Something like "upgrade the standby supervisor, activate it, upgrade the other one"?

• Control cell reference increment when dragging a forumula in Libre Office Calc (3.5)

  Using Libre Office Calc (3.5) and have a question. When copying a formula that references cells into multiple empty cells the default is to increment each cell reference by one column or row, depending on the direction that the formula is being drug. A formula '= 1 + A1' drug horizontally changes to '= 1 + B1' when pulled one cell to right and '=1 + A2' when pulled one cell down. Is there a way to control increase the increment of the referenced cell? Is is possible to have a formula '= 1 + A1' that effectively changes to '= 1 + A3' when drug down one cell, '= 1 + A5' when drug down two cells, etc? If it matters, I am trying to take a constantly updating master list of data that is organized by dates (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and create separate spread sheets for each day of the week that can be updated by only pulling down the formula into the next cell. My attempts at using the 'lookup' function, 'offset' function, and creating a sort column in Libre Office Calc are thwarted by my inability to figure out how to get around the single step increment when pulling a formula down into the next cell. • Installed Windows 7 Ultimate on D Drive and previous Windows 7 Enterprise on C Drive has stopped starting up

  Please please help! I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on same hard drive on D Drive on my laptop and the previous Windows 7 Enterprise which was installed on C Drive is not booting up now. When I turn on my laptop, I see two Windows 7 on the screen, when I select newer one, it starts, but when I select older one which is Enterprise edition, system won't start and I get the DOS black screen with this error message: Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." Click "repair your computer." Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. I notice that when I run the newer OS installed, the previous OS's drive (Which is D: now instead of C:) has become unusable and when I double click it, it asks me to format the drive. The data, that I had on my D Drive (Which is now C Drive for new OS), I had copied it to a network path and it is available. It was containing Windows 7 Users folder which I copied at that time when installing new windows. I have copied that Users folder again to the new OS's C Drive thinking it would run again, but of no use. Please please please...if someone can help...It is extremely required for me.   Server Specs Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit Provider : Fasthosts .Net Framework: 4.0 6 GB RAM (its using 4.6 GB) i have a website with thousands of pages structured like folderone/1/one to 500.aspx folderone/2/one to 500.aspx . . folderone/500/one to 500.aspx To load this pages for the first time after the release, for each folder it takes about 20 to 30 minutes and once one page is loaded the rest of the pages loads fine. This happens for all folders. And this repeats every time i restart the server, when a added anything to app_code or if i change the web.config. My site is mainly works Google and due to this problem its giving errors. Any help will be highly appreciated please. i am happy to buy a beer for you if its resolved. Thanks in advance...

I would like to have two separate servicies in different machines. The first machine will have the application itself with a apache, nginx, whatever.. The second one will contain the database. • How can I get write permission for the Web (Inetpub) directory on a new Win 7 machine?

  I mirror my Web site on my laptop, and am trying to move the mirror site to a new laptop. I copied the files to the Inetpub directory, and can view them perfectly, but they are read-only (the check-mark is grey, not black), and I cannot change the permission. When I un-check the read-only attribute on the Inetpub directory, and click "apply" it displays a dialog box stating that I need administrative permission to change the attributes. (I am logged in as an administrator). When I click "continue," it pops up another dialog box saying access is denied to the attributes of the file: c:\inetpub\custerr\en-us\500-100.asp That dialog box has an "ignore" button, and if I click that, it appears to work through the directory tree setting the permissions. It leaves all of the files (leafs) set to "read-write," but the directories remain "read only." I am using 64-bit Windows 7. I stopped the IIS service while doing all of this. Might it have something to do with the fact that I copied the files from a different machine in the workgroup (my old laptop)?

• Firefox url / link to a group of saved bookmarks?

  In Firefox you can easily save a group of tabs together. When (re-)accessing this group, the 'cascading' bookmark menu shows each individual bookmark (and under a line) it says "open all in tabs" I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu. Possible options: A) Record a simple macro w/ any number of "superuser" utilities* ('A' is not the preferred option, since many 'little-macros' are hard to keep track of) b) Use Autohotkey (similar to option 'A' and more flexible once you learn the basics) c) How does Firefox load all those tabs? The info must be stored somewhere (as a type of URL??) Quick Summary: The moment I click on "open all in tabs", I am clicking on something very similar to a hyper-link. How do I find the content (exact code) of that 'hyper-link', and / or "How do I easily launch the tabs?" .. . New EDIT #1: I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu, or cluttering the bookmarks toolbar which I hide anyway :o) .. . New EDIT #2: I tried to keep the question simple and not mentioning Autohotkey programming. The objective is to launch all tabs using a button on an AHK gui. When grawity said, "It's just an ordinary folder containing ordinary bookmarks," he (she) reminds me I can easily find the folder / Now how to launch to urls inside that folder? ..   How does one indicate that one has finished entering test in stdin? For example, let's say that I wish to encrypt 'blue' using MD5 (I know MD5 is unsecure, but just for this example). I tried user$ blue | md5 which I was led to understand is how one pipes input to stdin, but it doesn't work right. But if I just enter user$ md5 I can enter the word 'blue'. But how do I indicate to md5 that I'm finished entering text?

• Excel shows different files in same window

  In a browser, I downloaded an Excel spreadsheet and it displayed a dialog box asking what to do with it, so I selected "Open in Excel". Then I downloaded another Excel spreadsheet and opened that one in Excel as well. My taskbar shows 2 Excel icons, but there's only one Excel window. When I use the taskbar to switch between the spreadsheets, each one replaces the other in the Excel window. How can I get 2 Excel windows - one for each spreadsheet? I am running Windows 7 with Excel 2010.

  What is the easiest way to circle out something in a picture, like this example This is accomplished in Gimp: Here are the steps necesary to draw an empty ellipse without clearing the contents of the image below it. 1 - Layer New layer 2 - Make the layer to be the same size as the image and layer fill type to transparency. This should be already selected by default. 3 - On the toolbox select the ellipse select tool and make an ellipse 4 - Use the bucket fill tool to paint the ellipse with your desired color. 5 - Right click on it and go to Select Shrink... 6 - Type in how many pixels you want the border to be and click ok. 7 - Go to the menu and click Edit Clear. I feel it is very indirect, in the sense that first fill out the region enclosed by the ellipse, and then shrink the region to the boundary. I wonder if there is a quicker and more direct way to circle out something, such as by directly drawing the boundary? My OS is Ubuntu. What I was asking may be done outside of gimp, but must be by some software under Ubuntu. Thanks!
