  • ASP.NET Web Service - Passing a base object with list/collection?

    We need to create a simple web service in ASP.NET that can be called from PHP or other languages. This in turn will be used to update records in a database for an item submission. The core part is fairly simple, we have a base set of fields for the object - first name, last name, birth date, city, etc. In addition however we need to accept a list of items associated with that object that can range from 0-n. Jan 1 2009, ABC May 1 2010, 123 Jun 30 2010, XXXXX What would be the best way to structure this so it can be easily passed to the ASP.NET web service and processed as a single call for the entire object? Would passing the list of items as a single delimted string be a wise approach? Ex: Jan 1 2009, ABC|May 1 2010, 123|Jun 30 2010, XXXXX

  • ASP.NET site freezing up, showing odd text at top of the page while loading, on one server

    I have various servers (dev, 2 x test, 2 x prod) running the same asp.net site. The test and prod servers are in load-balanced pairs. One of these pairs is exhibiting some kind of (super) slowdown or freezing every other page load or so. Sometimes a line of text appears at the very top of the page which looks something like: 00 OK Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2010 01:50:09 GMT Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered_By: ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version:2.0.50727 Cache-Control:private Content-Type:text/html; charset=ut (the beginning and end are "cut off".) Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any idea what it means or what's causing it?

  • Do we affect multiple users in ASP.NET when we set the Thread CurrentCulture/CurentUICulture?

    When we set the CurrentCulture and/or CurrentUICulture we do this on the current thread like this: Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = new CultureInfo("en-GB"); Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new CultureInfo("en-GB"); Doest this mean we could affect the culture settings of multiple users of our web application as their requests may reuse the threads from pool? I am working on an ASP.NET MVC application where each user may have own culture setting specified in his/her account data. When the user logs in, the culture setting is retrieved from the database and has to be set as current culture. My worry is that setting the current culture on the current thread may affect another user request reusing this thread. I am even more concerned reading this: ASP.NET not only uses a thread pool, but may switch threads during request processing.

    I've been working with ASP.NET(WebForm) for a while, but new to ASP.NET MVC. From many articles I've read, in most cases the reason that the controllers are hard to test is because they are accessing the runtime components: HttpContext (including Request, Response ...). Accessing HttpContext in a controller seems bad. However, I must access these components somewhere, reading input from Request, sending results back via Response, and using Session to hold a few state variables. So where is the best place to access these runtime components if we don't access them in a controller? Best regards, Zach@Shine

  • Distributing WPF apps to a legacy user base: How seamless is it?

    I'm considering developing a WPF application, to be hosted by a legacy Windows app (C++), and I'm trying to get a better sense of how feasible it'll be to do so, given the broad user base I'm targeting. Knowing WPF targets .NET 3.5, I'm looking for some insight as to what the field looks like right now -- who's already got the runtime, whether it's distributed by Windows Update, if so, how (e.g., as an optional or required download, to which operating systems, etc.), whether XP pre-XP2 supports it (and how), and so on. The current version's got many thousands of users, using all manner of Windows operating systems, and while I'd very much like to leverage WPF to breathe some life into their user experience, I want to make sure I'm not shutting anyone out by doing so, or burdening them with a download they might have to do manually. I realize most, or all, of this information's out there already, in various places, but I figured I'd ask here first, since I'm sure some of you've probably already gone down this road and have valuable experiences to share.   • Setup program needs framework 4.0 - But it's already installed

    Hi all, I created a service which I now want to install to test. When running the setup program it prompts me to download and install .net fw 4.0, but I already have it installed. I did try to just install the file that I get pointed to (4.0 cliet), but not only does it still not work, it causes vs2010 to throw an unknown error and can't open. I've now uninstalled everything and started afresh with VS2010, framework 4.0 and win 7 but it still prompts me to install fw 4.0 when I try to run the setup. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Thanx in advance Willem

  • How do I save user specific data in an asp.net site?

    I just set up user profiles using asp.net 3.5 using wvd. For each user I would like to store data that they will be updating every day. For example, every time they go for a run they will update time and distance. I intend to allow them to also look up their history of distance and time from any past date. My question is, what does the database schema usually look like for such a set up? Currently asp.net set up a db for me when I made user profiles. Do I just add an extra table for every user? Should there be one big table with all users data? How do I relate a user I'd to their specific data? Etc.... I have never done this before so any ideas on how this is usually done would be very helpful. Thank you.

  • Open source configuration framework for ASP.NET - does one exist?

    We currently have an old product written in classic asp and are about to re-write parts in ASP.NET. One big problem is that much of the cutomer-specifics within the system are hard coded. We want to split this out for specific customers by storing data in the database. Is there a quick an easy open source framework which allows me to set up some quick tables and simple UIs to allow me to change configuration items? We have 6-7 modules, and it would be nice to have the ability to have system admins gain access to a configuration area where they can set-up settings in a tabbed UI format, settings could also be set-up to allow dropdown, fields, numbers etc. The items could then be accessed via classes in C#/vb for use within the operational parts of the system. If not, I'm suprised and it might even be a good basis for a new open source project.

  • Is there an easy way of obtaining the total page response time in ASP.Net?

    Hello, commonly on say PHP or other web frameworks getting the total response time is easy, just start the timer at the top of the file and stop it at the end. In ASP.Net there is the whole Page Lifecycle bit though so I'm not sure how to do this. I would like for this response time recording to take place in a master page and the response time show up in the footer of pages. What would be the best way of doing this? Is there something built in to ASP.Net for it? Is it even possible to include the OnRender time?

    Hi everybody, I have posted the following question concerning ASP.NET web farms. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1816756/how-to-create-an-asp-net-web-farm/ Guys recommended using Network Load Balancing (NLB) as a primary way of creating a web farm. However, Wikipedia says that "NLBS is intended for ... stateless applications". Our web application, however, is absolutely "stateful": it is a closed site to which users will have access by login and password, and information for every user will be different: people will see their own trades and operations. Should we still use NLB in this scenario? Thank you.

  • Why does ASP.Net rewrite relative paths for runat=server anchor controls?

    I have my UserControls in a ~/Controls folder in my solution: /Controls/TheControl.ascx If specify the following: <a runat="server" href="./?pg=1">link text</a> ASP.Net seems to want to rewrite the path to point to the absolute location. For example, If the control is on site.com/products/fish/cans.aspx the link href will be rewritten to read <a href="../../Controls/?pg=1>link text</a> Why does Asp.Net rewrite these control paths, and is there an elegant way to fix it? I just want the anchor control to spit out exactly what I tell it to!!! Is that so hard?

  • Asp:table bordercolor different html rendered for 1.1 and 2.0.

    Hi I have the following markup .NET 1.1 app. I want the grid lines of the table to be darkgray this is the goal here. <asp:table id="tbl" Runat="server" CellSpacing="0" BorderColor="darkgray" GridLines="Both"></asp:table> I have the app in IIS set as ver 1.1 in my dev box and 2.0 in production for various reasons. The page source in 1.1 renders this <table id="ctlTimesheetMonthly_tbl" cellspacing="0" rules="all" bordercolor="DarkGray" border="1" style="border-color:DarkGray;border-collapse:collapse;">` 2.0 renders this <table id="ctlTimesheetMonthly_tbl" cellspacing="0" rules="all" border="1" style="border-color:DarkGray;border-collapse:collapse;"> Which is wrong as it produces a white border for some reason.     Hi all, In Classic ASP, shouldn't a subroutine in global.asa be available to all .asp pages in the session? For some reason I am having trouble calling the sub. Before I look at whether something specific to my application is causing the problem I wanted to make sure I understood properly. global.asa: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="VBScript" RUNAT="Server"> sub foo session("foo") = true end sub </SCRIPT> myinclude.inc, included in all pages: call foo I get 'Type Mismatch' runtime error referencing foo. Am I totally misunderstanding this?

  • How can I force input to uppercase in an asp.net textbox?

    I'm writing an asp.net application. I have a textbox on a webform and I want to force whatever the user types to upper case. I'd like to do this on the front end. You should also note that there is a validation control on this textbox, so I want to make sure the solution doesn't interfere with the asp.net validation. Clarification: It appears that the CSS text-tranform makes the user input appear in uppercase, however under the hood, it's still lower case as the validation control fails. You see, my validation control checks to see if a valid state code is entered, however the regex expression I"m using only works with uppercase characters.
