• SharePoint 365 / Office 365 helpdesk template

  I want to use my current Sharepoint 365 for handling helpdesk tickets. I want a really basic helpdesk utility. I tried to install some applications templates and I couldn't. I found that Office 365 does not support application templates (am I right?) I tried to install the help desk template here and also the Help Desk here, but I didn't find a way. I've seen that there is a commercial app, but I'm interested in checking some other options (specially free options).

• How to remove "com.starfield.backupservice" from launchd?

  I remember sometime ago, I uninstall an application called starfield, but probably I didn't do a clean uninstall. Now in Console, I always see a annoying message: com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4441]) Exited with exit code: 1 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4442]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Starfield/BackupService/offSyncService", ...): No such file or directory I know it could be something wrong with my installation, how can I do a clean uninstall now, or just fix this issue, I don't want to see this message from my console any more. • A PDF viewer for large margins in fullscreen

  I am looking for a way to pleasantly read PDF files on my widescreen (22" 1680x1050) monitor. My problem with all pdf the PDF-viewer applications I have tried is that they do not handle wide and high margins well. If I go to fullscreen mode in my viewer and zoom in so that the extra margins are cropped, I can view the pages nicely, the annoyance however is that I have to reposition the pages every time I navigate to another page. I am sure there must be a way to make a PDF viewer that can solve this problem and perhaps there is one you know of? I am aware of something called PDF Reflow in Acrobat Reader but that only works with certain specific (tagged) files. I want a PDF viewer with a smarter zoom/next page function or an automatic margin-crop function. Is there such a thing?

• Camunda BPM 7.0 on WebLogic 12c

  If we go on tour together with Oracle I think we have to have camunda BPM running on the Oracle WebLogic application server 12c (WLS in short). And one of our enterprise customers asked - so I invested a Sunday and got it running (okay - to be honest - I needed quite some help from our Java EE server guru Christian). In this blog post I give a step by step description how run camunda BPM on WLS. Please note that this is not an official distribution (which would include a sophisticated QA, a comprehensive documentation and a proper distribution) - it was my personal hobby. And I did not fire the whole test suite agains WLS - so there might be some issues. We will do the real productization as soon as we have a customer for it (let us know if this is interesting for you). Necessary steps After installing and starting up WLS (I used the zip distribution of WLS 12c by the way) you have to do: Add a datasource Add shared libraries Add a resource adapter (for the Job Executor using a proper WorkManager from WLS) Add an EAR starting up one process engine Add a WAR file containing the REST API Add other WAR files (e.g. cockpit) and your own process applications Actually that sounds more work to do than it is ;-) So let's get started: Add a datasource Add a datasource via the Administration Console (or any other convenient way on WLS - I should admit that personally I am not the WLS expert). • Space a valid delimiter for email addresses in email header?

  Is it syntactically correct to delimit multiple email recipients in the "To" header of an email with spaces only or do I need to use another delimiter (a semicolon or the like)? Example (MIME data reads as follows): Date: Mon, 04 Oct 2010 06:14:16 +0200 From: [email protected] To: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Subject: Test Subject The above will be processed by many email processing applications, but I need to know whether it's correct according to standard (RFC). • asp.net mvc vs angular.js model binding

  So I've noticed a trend lately of .net web developers using angular.js on the client side of applications and I've become more curious as I play around with angular and compare it to how I would do things in asp.net mvc. I'll give a quick example of what really got me thinking. I recently came across a situation at work (I work in a .net environment) where I needed to create a table bound to a collection of objects that had the ability to add and remove rows/items from the collection. I had an add button that created a new object and appended a row to the end of the table, and a remove button in each row to remove a particular object/row. Using asp.net mvc, I first found myself making an ajax call to the server for each operation, updating the server side model, and refreshing part of the page to show the result in the table. This worked but I didn't really like the idea of calling the server to update the model each time, so I tried to come up with a solution to do this on the client side. It turned out to be quite a task, as I had to generate the html on add with validation and all and the correct indexing for the model binding to work. It got worse on remove, as I ended up with a crazy string replace function to recreate the indexes on each item to satisfy the binding requirements (if an item other than the last is removed, the indexes are no longer correct). Now out of curiosity, I tried to recreate this at home in angular (which I had no experience with) and it took me all of about 10 minutes with simple functions to add and remove items from the client side model. This is just one example, but it seems to me that I'm able to achieve the same results with far fewer calls to the server in angular because of the fact that it binds to a client side model. So my question is, is this a distinct advantage of using a javascript mvc framework or am I somehow under utilizing the power of asp.net mvc and am I right in thinking that these operations should be done on the client and have no business requiring calls to the server?

• Cygwin won't start Gitk

  Hey I have followed this answer to solve problem with running GUI applications under Cygwin. So far it seems okay, but when I try to open gitk it will complain on that it cannot find any git repository here. I am standing in the correct folder though, and running git from console it works (I can push, pull, and so on) But gitk won't start as it say it is not any git repository here. Anyone know how to fix it? • Need help deciding if Joomla! experience as a good metric for hiring a particular prospective employee.

  My company has been looking to hire a PHP developer. Some of the requirements for the job include: an understanding of design patterns, particularly MVC. some knowledge of PHP 5.3's new features. experience working with a PHP framework (it doesn't matter which one). I interviewed a man today who's primary work experience involved working with Joomla!. As an employee, he will be required to work on existing and new web applications that use Zend Framework, CakePHP and/or CodeIgniter. It is my opinion that we shouldn't dismiss hiring a developer just because he has not used the same technologies that he'll be using on the job. So, I'd like to know about the kind of coding experience working with Joomla! can provide. I've never bothered to take more than a brief look (if that) at the Joomla! package, so I'm hoping to lean on the knowledge of my peers. Would you consider Joomla! to contain a professional code-base? Is the package well organized, and/or OO in general, or is it more like WordPress where logic and presentation are commingled? When working with Joomla!, is the developer encouraged to use best practices? In your opinion, would experience working with Joomla! garner the skills needed to get up to speed with Zend or CakePHP quickly, or will there be a steep learning curve ahead of the developer? I'm not saying that Joomla! is a bad technology, or even that it is lower on the totem pole when compared to the frameworks I've mentioned. Maybe it's awesome, I dunno. I simply have no idea!

• Where should SQL/DB Queries be encapsulated in a software system?

  I frequently write small applications (either web based or otherwise) that require heavy database usage. i've attempted various ways of handling where to put the actual sql queries (sort of ad-hoc ORM systems). These include: Models that build themselves up - and only allowing SQL to be inside of a model. A sort of factory style method where the models are built by a factory class that is allowed to know about SQL. A third entity that maps models based on their fields/keys into the database and generates SQL code on the fly based on this. Is there a common knowledge of which method is best? Or another way I have missed? Clearly a lot of it will be based on the context of the system itself, which for me is usually to produce lightweight tools or utility frameworks. In experimenting, I've never found any of them that feel intuitively "right" and not clunky, but I also do not want to go for a full framework such as Django or Ruby - both because the tools I create are in a variety of languages and because they usually do not warrant that level of surrounding footprint.

  I have one asp.net web service (asmx) in separate project that is hosted on windows server having other asp.net web applications running on it. How can I restrict asp.net web service to be accessed by single IP address? I want that my web service must be accessed by one IP configured by me. If requests comes from any other IP, it must not reach to my web service and discarded by windows firewall itself. I know that this is something to do with windows firewall. I did it for SQL Server previously, but I don't know how to configure single asp.net web service project to do so.

Having grown up in a household with one parent leaning left and the other leaning to the right it was the best way to keep the peace. This isn't about politics. It's about "constituents" and the need to improve the services and service levels for people--at the city, county, state/province, etc. level all the way up to national governments. As a citizen and tax payer it's also important to me that these services be provided at a reasonable cost. If there's a better and more efficient way to do something then it's my hope that a public sector organization takes advantage of technology the same way private sector companies do. Social services organizations have a complex job. They provide the services that people need, from healthcare and children's assistance to helping people find jobs. But many of these organizations are still managing these processes manually or outdated, home-grown applications that could have been written up to 30 years ago. A lot has changed in technology. On the (this is as political as I'm going to get) political front, stakeholders like you and me are expecting greater transparency on where and how funds are spent. I'll admit that most of the time, when I think about CRM systems, I think about my experience as a customer of my bank, utilities company or cable operator. But now that I'm older, have children and a house--I find myself interacting more and more with agencies and services organizations. My experiences are sometimes good and sometimes not so good. Along those lines, last week's announcement of Siebel CRM 8.2 for Public Sector caught my eye. You may not work in the public sector, but you are a constituent of some--actually a lot--of public sector organizations. I don't know which CRM systems city and county utilize but I'm going to start paying closer attention.

• Is comparing an OO compiler to a SQL compiler/optimizer valid?

  I'm now doing a lot of SQL development at my new job where as before I was doing Object Oriented desktop app stuff. I keep running across very large scripts (thousands of lines) and wanting to refactor in some way. I am seeing that SQL is a different sort of beast and it's probably fine to have these big scripts for the most part but while explaining this to me people are also insisting that the whole idea of refactoring is bad. That stuff like the .NET compiler are actually burdened by refactored code and that a big wall of code is more efficient and better design than code designed for reuse, readability and scalability. The other argument is that OO compilers are almost dangerously inefficient and don't have efficient memory management or runs too many CPU instructions compared to older "simpler" compilers and compared to SQL. Are these valid complaints? Even if some compiler like a C compiler is modestly more "efficient" (whatever that means on this high of a level without seeing code) would you want to write applications in C over C# or Java? Is comparing an OO compiler to a SQL compiler/optimizer even valid?

  I'd like to do some analysis of our NFS server to help track down potential bottlenecks in our applications. The server is running SUSE Enterprise Linux 10. The kind of things I'm looking to know are: Which files are being accessed by which clients Read/write throughput on a per-client basis Overhead imposed by other RPC calls Time spent waiting on other NFS requests, or disk I/O, to service a client I already know about the statistics available in /proc/net/rpc/nfsd and in fact I wrote a blog post describing them in depth. What I'm looking for is a way to dig deeper and help understand what factors are contributing to the performance seen by a particular client. I want to analyze the role the NFS server plays in the performance of an application on our cluster so that I can think of ways to best optimize it.

• I have 5 days of vouchers for MS training… help me choose? [closed]

  I'm a Microsoft centric guy (systems engineering side) and I already know the syntax of VB, have done VBScript pretty extensively and Excel VBA stuff as well. I want to make the leap into proper programming, probably with C# because it teaches me syntax I can use for Java if I want to go that route at some point. Since I have vouchers for 5 days of programming, and I can understand logic and understand how the .NET framework works... I would love to hear ideas on which MS Courses I should take. My primary focus is to work on web applications with web services that interact and do neat stuff... like for example, to create a 'chat' room or something interactive on the web. Or should I do something with HTML5/JS? I am really not sure... like I said, I want to work to make web services/sites. Not making the next Facebook mind you, but I'd like to work towards something in that spectrum on a much smaller scale. Please give me any advice, I'd like to book these classes asap Obviously getting involved with SQL and things that I will require would be important here.. you guys know better than me! Thanks!

• Fast swapping of production and staging in IIS

  I'm using IIS 7 on my own dedicated server. Let's say I have two web applications. One points to folder A, and one points to folder B. The first is used for production and the second is for staging. If I want to set up a scenario whereby I upload my aplication to staging, make sure everybody's happy, then swap the folders that each web application points at, thereby putting "staging" live and making the production environment the new staging environment, what's a good way to do this? I know Microsoft themselves use this methodology on their Azure platform and I've seen it used elsewhere too. How can I do it on my server with IIS7?

I'm familiar already with loading EPUB-format titles through iBooks – unfortunately, iBooks doesn't read PDFs so I am looking at using a third-party application. I know many such third-party media viewer applications for the iPad support download from web or email, but that's a hassle. I've heard iTunes 9.1 added support for USB File Transfer, specifically for iPad devices. How does USB File Transfer work in iTunes, for transferring files from my PC to my iPad? • Is the difference between sudo and gksu the same as the difference between sudo -i and sudo -s?

  Is the difference between sudo cmd and gksu cmd, the same as the difference between starting a shell with sudo -i and sudo -s? ... or put another way, Is sudo cmd the same as sudo -i cmd and gksu cmd the same as sudo -s cmd? EDIT: Based on what I read on an Ubuntu Documentation Page where it says: You should never use normal sudo to start graphical applications as root. You should use gksudo (kdesudo on Kubuntu) to run such programs. gksudo sets HOME=~root, and copies .Xauthority to a tmp directory. This prevents files in your home directory becoming owned by root. (AFAICT, this is all that's special about the environment of the started process with gksudo vs. sudo). The "AFAICT" doen't really give me full confidence that there is nothing more to it. (..a belated UPDATE: I tested his commemnt today (2 months later) about: "This prevents files in your home directory becoming owned by root." All files I created via sudo/gksu were all owned by "root", and the group was "root".) I've read parts of the info sudo and noticed the -i and -s seem to be doing the same thing as the AFAICT environment issue... but I hit overload.. so I've asked my question here. PS.. My question is not about sudo vs gksu .. It is more about: Is gksu the same as sudo -s .. and if not, how do they differ?

• Application Event Log keeps getting corrupted

  I recently asked about repairing a corrupt event log, because it seemed to be a one-off event. The event log has since exhibited the same behavior 3 times. We have been trying to find patterns, but so far we have found nothing. The server runs several ASP.NET applications and three scheduled tasks written in .NET. The last modified date of the event log once happened to be the same time as one of the scheduled tasks, but the others have not been. Any suggestions of where to look next or a way we can get any information out of a corrupt evtx file? The server is running critical e-commerce applications, so we want to keep the number of restarts required to a minimum. • Add a remote printer over ssh on OSX?

  I have a printer at my office that is connected to a local network and my linux box at work can see it on the network. However, it is not visible to the outside world. I was trying to figure out a way to add it on my MacAir and so far have found two options: 1) Using ssh tunnel via CLI: cat file.pdf | ssh user@linuxbox lpr. 2) With Chrome installed on the linux box, using the Google Cloud Print service on the remote box and automator on my MacAir I can add the printer to Cmnd+p dialog box I like the first method since it does not require Chrome be installed and the second one since it allows to use Cmnd+p inside all applications. I was wondering if there is a way to combine by using automator to run the first command line script. What about port forwarding? Is it possible to forward the remote CUPS 631 port to a local port and then add the printer normally? What other methods would you recommend?

• Why does the Java VM process eat up more RAM then specified in -Xmx parameter?

  I have multiple servers running CentOS 5.4 and only one application running on Java VM. I've configured the Java VM with the following arguments: java -Xmx4500M -server -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:NewSize=1024m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote=true The machines I'm running the VM on has 6 GB RAM and no other applications running. After a while, the java process starts to hit the swap space really hard, I get this info out of the top command: 7658 root 25 0 11.7g 3.9g 4796 S 39.4 67.3 543:54.17 java On the other hand, if I connect via JConsole, it reports the Java VM has 2.6 GB used, 4.6 GB commited and 4.6 Gb max. java -version returns: java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode) Why is the Java VM expanding so much past it's allocated heap size? And where does that memory go, if it's not reported in JConsole?
