  • Mapping functions of 2D numpy arrays

    I have a function foo that takes a NxM numpy array as an argument and returns a scalar value. I have a AxNxM numpy array data, over which I'd like to map foo to give me a resultant numpy array of length A. Curently, I'm doing this: result = numpy.array([foo(x) for x in data]) It works, but it seems like I'm not taking advantage of the numpy magic (and speed). Is there a better way? I've looked at numpy.vectorize, and numpy.apply_along_axis, but neither works for a function of 2D arrays. EDIT: I'm doing boosted regression on 24x24 image patches, so my AxNxM is something like 1000x24x24. What I called foo above applies a Haar-like feature to a patch (so, not terribly computationally intensive).

  • How to calculate both positive and negative angle between two lines?

    There is a very handy set of 2d geometry utilities here. The angleBetweenLines has a problem, though. The result is always positive. I need to detect both positive and negative angles, so if one line is 15 degrees "above" or "below" the other line, the shape obviously looks different. The configuration I have is that one line remains stationary, while the other line rotates, and I need to understand what direction it is rotating in, by comparing it with the stationary line. EDIT: in response to swestrup's comment below, the situation is actually that I have a single line, and I record its starting position. The line then rotates from its starting position, and I need to calculate the angle from its starting position to current position. E.g if it has rotated clockwise, it is positive rotation; if counterclockwise, then negative. (Or vice versa.) How to improve the algorithm so it returns the angle as both positive or negative depending on how the lines are positioned?

  • Chipmunk Physics or Box2D for C++ 2D GameEngine ?

    Hello, I'm developing what it's turning into a "cross-platform" 2D Game Engine, my initial platform target is iPhone OS, but could move on to Android or even some console like the PSP, or Nintendo DS, I want to keep my options open. My engine is developed in C++, and have been reading a lot about Box2D and Chipmunk but still I can't decide which one to use as my Physics Middleware. Chipmunk appears to have been made to be embedded easily, and Box2D seems to be widely used. Chipmunk is C , and Box2D is C++, but I've heard the API's of Box2D are much worse than chipmunk's API's. For now I will be using the engine shape creation and collision detection features for irregular polygons (not concave). I value: 1) Good API's 2) Easy to integrate. 3) Portability. And of course if you notice anything else, I would love to hear it. Which one do you think that would fit my needs better ?

    I am a seasoned python,java,...other programmer having a (fairly advanced) mathematical education (so I do understand statistics and data mining, for example) . For various reasons I am thinking to switch to SAS/BI area (I am naming SAS because it might be, for me, a possible way to enter in BI). My question, for whoever might have an experience of both: is it, in BI current state, worth it? I mean, the days of big ideas in BI for business seem to be over (there are the APIs, managers think that they know what you can do with them), and my mathematical background might turn out to be superflous. Also, the big companies now have their data organized, have their BI procedures well established, and trying to analyze it from a different standpoint might not be what they want. Another difference is: while in Java etc. development one codes and codes and codes, I don't know if this is the case for BI; in fact, from what I read on the net, a BI (or OLAP, ...etc) developer, in a big organization, is usually in a state of standby, and does in fact little coding. Any opinions, and in particular strong opinions, will be appreciated.

I am trying the following code: 0 use strict; 10 my @frame_events = (((1) x 10), ((1) x 10)); 20 print "$frame_events[1][1]\n"; but it gives the following error: Can't use string ("1") as an ARRAY ref while "strict refs" in use at ./dyn_pf.pl line 20. This syntax only seems to initialize a 1d array as print "$frame_events[1]\n" works. Though perl doesn't give any error during the assignment.

  • loading data from file into 2d array

    I am just starting with perl and would like some help with arrays please. I am reading lines from a data file and splitting the line into fields: open (INFILE, $infile); do { my $linedata = <INFILE>; my @data= split ',',$linedata; .... } until eof; I then want to store the individual field values (in @data) in and array so that the array looks like the input data file ie, the first "row" of the array contains the first line of data from INFILE etc. Each line of data from the infile contains 4 values, x,y,z and w and once the data are all in the array, I have to pass the array into another program which reads the x,y,z,w and displays the w value on a screen at the point determined by the x,y,z value. I can not pas the data to the other program on a row-by-row basis as the program expects the data to in a 2d matrtix format. Any help greatly appreciated. Chris

  • Oracle and Cavium to work together on Java SE 8 on 64-bit ARMv8

    We have been working for some time on a standard Oracle JDK 8 port to the upcoming introduction of 64-bit servers based on the new ARMv8 micro architecture. At ARM TechCon 2013 in Santa Clara, California, we announced a roadmap with an expected GA in 2015. This project is going very well and is ahead of schedule. We will soon be at the point where we will make binaries available outside of Oracle - first in a managed beta program with select customers/partners, and sometime during the fall of 2014 as a public early access program. Unless something changes, we are looking at a early 2015 GA. We should be able to share a detailed ramp down and GA plan by JavaOne 2014. One of the things we (obviously) need to produce a high-quality port is hardware for development and QA. We are therefore happy to announce that we will be collaborating with Cavium on this project. Cavium has been a supporter of the Java ecosystem for a long time and we have numerous joint customers running various Java versions on Cavium MIPS and ARM-based hardware. Cavium has now agreed to provide us with development hardware and engineering resources so that we can certify and optimize the initial Oracle JDK 8 release on Cavium's ThunderX hardware. This is expected to improve quality and performance of JDK 8 on ARMv8 in general, as well as on Cavium's hardware.   • How to achieve a palette effect on iPhone using OpenGL

    I'm porting a 2d retro game to iPhone that has the following properties: targets OpenGL ES 1.1 entire screen is filled with tiles (textured triangle strip tile textured using a single 256x256 RGBA texture image the texture is passed to OpenGL once at the start of the game only 4 displayed colours are used one of the displayed colours is black The original game flashed the screen when time starts to run out by toggling the black pixels to white using an indexed palette. What is the best (i.e. most efficient) way to achieve this in OpenGL ES 1.1? My thoughts so far: Generate an alternative texture with white instead of black pixels, and pass to OpenGL when the screen is flashing Render a white poly underneath the background and render the texture with alpha on to display it Try and render a poly on top with some blending that achieves the effect (not sure this is possible) I'm fairly new to OpenGL so I'm not sure what the performance drawbacks of each of these are, or if there's a better way of doing this.

  • PHP 2D Array to MySQL Database

    I have a PHP 2D array, many keys, each with one value, I need to put this into a MySQL database. The database has 8 fields. Eg. Field1, Field2, Field3, etc. I am trying to ensure value1 => field1, value2 =>field2, value3 => field3 and so on, when one record is full (i.e. after 8 values) a new record should be created for the next 8 values and so on. I am aware that the 1st, 9th, 17th, 26th values etc, will need an insert statement and the intermediate values will be an update statement. What is the best way of going about this?

  • Drawing Rounded Rectangle in DirectX/3D for 2D

    I'm using Direct3D to draw 2D elements in a C++ application of mine, and it'd be neat if I could create rounded-rectangle GUI elements that were varying in size, but I'm not sure how to do that in the most efficient manner possible. I thought of the "easy" way which would be to have images of the four corners and then just place them in the proper positions, and fill in the rest, but varying radii for the rectangle corners would be a definite plus, and this method doesn't accommodate that feature well. Through my searches I've come across the terms Pixel Shader, Stencil Buffering, and HLSL, but I'm not sure whether these terms are relevant and which one to jump into if so.   • Migrating Forms to Java or ADF, the truth and no FUD

    The question about migrating Forms to Java (or ADF or APEX) comes up time and time again.  I wanted to pull some core information together in a single blog post to address this question. The first question I always ask is "WHY" - Forms may still be a viable option for you so "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  Bottom line is whatever anyone tells you, its going to be a considerable effort and cost to migrate from Forms to something else so the business is going to want to know WHY you spend all those hard earned dollars switching from something that might have been serving you quite adequately. Second point, if you are going to switch, I would encourage you NOT to look at building a Forms clone.  So many times I see people trying to build an ADF application and EXACTLY mimic the Forms model - ADF is NOT a Forms clone.  You should be building to the sweet spot of your target technology, not your 20 year old client/server technology.  This is also the chance for the business to embrace change, so maybe look at new processes, channels and technology options that weren't available when you first developed your Forms applications.   • Security Alert for CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887 Released

Oracle just released a Security Alert to announce the availability of fixes for two vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887) affecting Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. Both vulnerabilities only affect Java when running in a 32-bit web browser. These vulnerabilities are not present in Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications and do not impact any Oracle server based software. The first vulnerability (CVE-2010-0886) affects the Java Deployment Toolkit (version 6 update 10 through 19) on Windows only. The second vulnerability (CVE-2010-0887) affects the Java Plug-in (version 6 update 18 and 19) on Windows, Solaris and Linux. Both vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to run commands on the user's system with the privileges of the user, whose system may have become compromised by visiting a malicious web site. Oracle rated the severity of both vulnerabilities with a CVSS Base Score of 10.0 because many Windows users grant themselves administrative privileges. However, on other platforms, or for Windows users with limited privileges, the CVSS Base Score is only 7.5, because a successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities cannot result in a full compromise of the affected system. Users can quickly determine if they are running vulnerable versions of Java by pointing their browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml. Java SE users can visit http://www.java.com and download the most recent release of Java SE to address these vulnerabilities. Because of the criticality of these vulnerabilities, and the publicity they received as a result of their disclosure before the availability of a fix, Oracle recommends that all customers and Java users update their Java installation to the most recent version (6 update 20).     Hi All, I had some fairly simple code in my app to invoke Edit Contact activity on a known good contact index that worked in Android 1.6 but is broken for me now in Android 2.1 on the Droid.     My background(If it's too long, just skip it please ; ) ): I am Java programmer(because of demand): mostly teacher for other students, worked on few thesis for others, but during my journey I discovered that .NET and Microsoft's tools are on at least two levels higher than Java and its tools so I want to learn more about them. I programmed little bit on Windows Phone(NFC Tags, TCP Clients, guitar tuner using internal microphone, simple RSS), used WPF, integrated WPF with Windows Forms, Apple Bonjour(.NET), I have expierience with IP cameras and with unusal problems, I learn Android, but I don't like it at all. Problem: I was asked by my friend to create CRM for small new company. There will maximum 20 workers in the company working at computers in few cities in the country(Poland). They just want to store contracts with the clients and client's data. I am not sure what exacly they do but probably sell apartments so there will be at most few thousands of contracts to store in far future. Now I am totally new to CRM but I want to learn. I have few questions: Should the data be stored on a server in the company's building running 24/7 or cloud. If cloud which one? Should I use ASPX or WPF. I read one topic about it but as far as I know aspx sites can be viewed from every device with internet browser: tablets, phones(Android, WP, iOS) and computers at the same time- so the job is done once and for all(Am I right?), I don't know nothing about aspx. Can WPF be also used in manner that does not need to port it for other platforms?

  • iPhone - Drawing 2D Shapes

    Hi guys! I have an array of 2D points which make an irregular polygon. What I want to do is draw the borders of it and then fill it with a color. I am using Cocos2d to code the game around, but I have not found a fill function in Cocos2d, only the ccDrawLine and such. Is there a simple way to draw filled shapes in Cocos2? I have also noted that Core Graphics would work beautifully for this purpose, but I am not able to integrate it with Cocos2d. I put this in to the draw function of my CCLayer: CGContextRef ctx = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); CGContextClearRect(ctx, [[UIScreen mainScreen] bounds]); And every time I run it i get this error: <Error>: CGContextClearRect: invalid context I really need to get this working... Any ideas?

And the Apache servers themselves supply static content and routing to these 4 tomcat servers. Java Runtime Version: java version "1.6.0_30" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_30-b12) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.5-b03, mixed mode Memory Startup Parameters: MEMORY_OPTIONS="-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -Xss192k -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=500 -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled" Monitoring – Wily monitoring is available in all the production servers that monitors key server parameters and sends out configurable alert emails based on pre defined settings. Note: Each of the servers also has two other separate tomcat domains that run different applications Investigated area: There is no Heap Memory Leak and the GC is running fine without any issues over any period of time The current busy thread count corresponds directly to the application usage – weekends and nights have lesser no. of threads compared to business hours ThreadLocal uses a WeakReference internally. If the ThreadLocal is not strongly referenced, it will be garbage-collected, even though various threads have values stored via that ThreadLocal. Additionally, ThreadLocal values are actually stored in the Thread; if a thread dies, all of the values associated with that thread through a ThreadLocal are collected. If you have a ThreadLocal as a final class member, that's a strong reference, and it cannot be collected until the class is unloaded. But this is how any class member works, and isn't considered a memory leak. The cited problem only comes into play when the value stored in a ThreadLocal strongly references that ThreadLocal—sort of a circular reference. In this case, the value (a SimpleDateFormat), has no backwards reference to the ThreadLocal. There's no memory leak in this code. Can anyone please let me know what could be the cause of this and what to be monitored?
