• Can certain system-hungry modules be disabled in Ubuntu?

  Hi, Let me add some context: I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit (Desktop) on a relatively powerful stationary PC (Intel Core i7 920, 12GB ram). My purpose is highspeed imaging with a pointgrey Grashopper machine-vision camera (for research, PhD project). This camera is capable of 200 fps at full VGA (640x480) resolution. The camera is connected using Firewire (1394b) and the drivers and software from Pointgrey works great. I have developed a console C++ application that can grap a certain number of frames to preallocated memory and after this also save the grapped frames to harddrive. Currently it works fine but sometimes I am observing a few framedrops (1-3). When this happens I reset the experiment and repeat the recording and usually i am lucky the second time with no framedrops (the camera-driver has a internal framecounter that I am using). Question: I usually go to tty1 and use "sudo service gdm stop" to disable the graphical frontend. It seems to release some memory though that is not my main concern. My concern is CPU resources. Are there other system hungry modules that can be disabled temporarily such that the CPU gets less busy on Ubuntu 9.10? At some point in the future I will update to 10.10. Should I perhaps option for the server edition instead? Thanks.

• Setting up IIS7 to mimic a GoDaddy shared hosting plan

  I host multiple domains on a GoDaddy shared hosting account. I would like to setup a website locally in IIS 7 that mimics the setup of my hosted account so that I can test and debug applications locally before deploying, as debugging after deploying, or discovering there are issues after deploying is frustrating. I have created a folder WebRoot, at put my main application in that folder. I created a website in IIS 7 and pointed it at that folder. I setup bindings with a fake domain, and created a matching entry in my hosts file to make the fake domain point at my 127.0.0.1. I then created a folder www.otherdomain.com under webroot. I then created an application underneath my website, and pointed it at this folder. I can't find how I can add bindings to the web application to have it referenced as a different fake domain, rather than a subdirectory under my root domain. What would be the proper way to setup IIS to best simulate the environment on the GoDaddy servers.

• F# &ndash; Converting your C# brain to the F# way

  My brain still thinks in C#!!! I have been looking at F# and trying to figure out the basics of it, but all the time in the back of my mind I am going – what is the C# equivalent to this or that… It’s frustrating because I almost want a F# to C# dictionary the whole time – and simply translate my C# code to F# – which would negate the main motivation for learning F# – as I want learn functional programming - if I was simply doing C# code in a F# syntax I would be gaining nothing! So I am experiencing pain while my brain forms some new neural networks… but luckily I live in a country where we have 11 official spoken languages, and plenty more unofficial languages so I have gone through the pain of learning how to speak a new language before – and I am finding the process is almost identical in learning a programming language that promotes a different way of looking at problems (from Object Orientated to Functional). That beings said… the first thing to learn is the basic syntax… I have searched the web for appropriate places to get a translation – and have been quite disappointed with what is out there for F#. Luckily, OCaml came to the rescue. There are some really good tutorials on getting started with OCaml syntax, one in particular that stood out was the OCamal-Tutorial. What I particularly like about it is that it is doing comparisons between C based languages and OCaml. Give it a read sometime – it’s well worth it and has definitely helped me understand F# a little better.

• Not able to track traffic on subdomain using Google Analytics

  I'm trying to track traffic for my sub-domain, but it's not happening. This is how it's set up. My partner has a domain called sub1.partner.com. This domain points to partner1.mydomain.com. The idea is that users think they are browsing my partners website, when they are in fact browsing pages on my server. • SQLite DB borked when opened on a different machine

  Hello, I'm using SQLite to store some data. The primary database is on a NAS (Debian Lenny, 2.6.15, armv4l) since the NAS runs a script which updates the data every day. A typical "select * from tableX" looks like this: 2010-12-28|20|62.09|25170.0 2010-12-28|21|49.28|23305.7 2010-12-28|22|48.51|22051.1 2010-12-28|23|47.17|21809.9 When I copy the DB to my main computer (Mac OS X) and run the same SQL query, the output is: 2010-12-28|20|1.08115035175016e-160|25170.0 2010-12-28|21|2.39343503830763e-259|-9.25596535779558e+61 2010-12-28|22|-1.02951149572792e-86|1.90359837597183e+185 2010-12-28|23|-1.10707273937033e-234|-2.35343828462275e-185 The 3rd and 4th column have the type REAL. Interesting fact: When the numbers are integer (i.e. they end with ".0"), there is no difference between the two databases. In all other cases, the differences are ... hm ... surprising? I can't seem to find a pattern. If someone's got a clue - please share!

• Games without a(n explicit) game loop

  Most game development happens with a main game loop. Are there any good articles/blog posts/discussions about games without a game loop? I imagine they'd mostly be web games, but I'd be interested in hearing otherwise. (As a side note, I think it's really interesting that the concept is almost exclusively used in gaming as far as I'm aware, perhaps that may be another question.) Edit: I realize there's probably a redraw loop somewhere. I guess what I really mean is a loop that is hidden to you. Frames are something you as the developer are not concerned with as you're working on a higher level of abstraction. E.g. someLootItem.moveTo(inventory, someAnimatationType) and that will move from the loot box to your inventory using the specified animation type without the game developer having to worry about the implementation details of that animation. Maybe that's how "real" games end up working, but from reading most tutorials they seem to imply a much more granular level of control is used, but that might just be an artifact of being a tutorial.

• Question on methods in Object Oriented Programming

  I’m learning Java at the minute (first language), and as a project I’m looking at developing a simple puzzle game. My question relates to the methods within a class. I have my Block type class; it has its many attributes, set methods, get methods and just plain methods. There are quite a few. Then I have my main board class. At the moment it does most of the logic, positioning of sprites collision detection and then draws the sprites etc... As I am learning to program as much as I’m learning to program games I’m curious to know how much code is typically acceptable within a given method. Is there such thing as having too many methods? All my draw functionality happens in one method, should I break this into a few ‘sub’ methods? My thinking is if I find at a later stage that the for loop I’m using to cycle through the array of sprites searching for collisions in the spriteCollision() method is inefficient I code a new method and just replace the old method calls with the new one, leaving the old code intact. Is it bad practice to have a method that contains one if statement, and place the call for that method in the for loop? I’m very much in the early stages of coding/designing and I need all the help I can get! I find it a little intimidating when people are talking about throwing together a prototype in a day too! Can’t wait until I’m that good!

• My WD Caviar Green SATA HDD cannot be detected

  I have a WD 2TB Caviar Green SATA HDD. I used it as an external hard drive formatted to FAT32. The main purpose was to store my PS3 games. It worked fine and all of a sudden my PS3 stopped detecting it. I tried connecting it to my pc and the same result. I took it off from the enclosure and plugged it directly to my PC and used the BIOS setup. The BIOS setup detects my HDD but it says it's 0.0MB!!! I also tried the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and it wasn't much of use because the drive is not picking up by windows at all. Is my HDD dead? Is it beyond repair?

• Postfix configuration w.r.t. port 25

  After a considerable amount of research, I have configured my postfix server to use dovecot to accept SMTPS connections over port 465 and everything works swimmingly. Unfortunately, I forgot that, unless I listen to port 25, I'm not going to receive any e-mail from the net. I'm hoping somebody knows off the top of their head how to open up port 25 on Postfix for anonymous users, but disallow relaying and any other bad things on that port. And to leave the port 465 the way it is.   I am looking for a software which I can host in popular and general shared web hosting services(online softwares like wordpress, meidawiki, drupal etc.) which can do the following- allow users to create account allow users or anons to add words to the dictionary (there will be English as base language and other languages) easier way to import all the words from English dictionary users should be able to write the that language equivalent of the English word Every word should have it's own address and page like www.namesomething.com/word/en/software will contain the word software and the other language word for it search should be faster and should find nearer results it's should be able to list related words like if the user is looking at "software" then other words from s like "softcopy" etc should appear alphabetically in that page Any one should be able to comment on the word which is not seen in the main page but other page similar to the talk page in the wiki any one should be able to contribute clean interface unlike wiki (media wiki and all other) just for words only I tried media wiki and other wiki software but it overloaded and unclean. I am looking for interface similar to oed.com but clean, minimal as we are not going to have such more information. Just words in English and it's other language equivalent. Here we are talking about a language which has not yet been in the Internet. It's should be collaborative.

• Get Func-y v2.0

  In my last post I talked about using funcs in C# to do async calls in WinForms to free up the main thread for the UI. In that post I demonstrated calling a method and then waiting until the value came back. Today I want to talk about calling a method and then continuing on and handling the results of the async call in a callback.The difference is that in the previous example although the UI would not lock up the user couldn't really do anything while the other thread was working because it was waiting for it to finish. This time I want to allow the user to continue to do other stuff while waiting for the thread to finish.Like before I have a service call I want to make that takes a long time to finish defined in a method called MyServiceCall. We need to define a callback method takes an IAsyncResult parameter.public ServiceCallResult MyServiceCall(int param1)...public int MyCallbackMethod(IAsyncResult ar)...We start the same way by defining a delegate to the service call method using a Func. We need to pass an AsyncCallback object into the BeginInvoke method. This will tell it to call our callback method when MyServiceCall finishes. The second parameter to BeginInvoke is the Func delegate. This will give us access to it in our callback.Func<int, ServiceCallResult> f = MyServiceCall;AsyncCallback callback =   new AsyncCallback(MyCallbackMethod);IAsyncResult async = f.BeginInvoke(23, callback, f); Now let's expand the callback method. • How do you QA and release software quickly with a large team?

  My work used to be a smaller team. We had less than 13 devs for a while. We are now growing rapidly, and are over 20 with plans to be over 30 in a few months. Our process for QA'ing and releasing each build is no longer working. We currently have everyone develop the new code, and stick it onto a staging environment. A few days before our weekly release, we would freeze the staging environment and QA everything. By our normal release time, everything was usually deemed acceptable and pushed out the door to the main site. We reached a point where our code got too big so we could no longer regress the entire site each week in QA. We were ok with that, we just made a list of everything important and only covered that and the new stuff. Now we are reaching a point where all the new stuff each week is becoming too big and too unstable. Our staging environment is really buggy week after week, and we are usually 1-2 hours behind the normal release time. As the team is growing further, we are going to drown with this same process. We are re-evaluating everything, and I personally am looking for suggestions / success stories. Many companies have been where before and progressed beyond, we need to do the same

• Architectural approaches to creating a game menu/shell overlay on PC/Linux?

  I'm am working on a collection of games for a custom digital tabletop installation (similar to Microsoft Surface tables). Each game will be an individual executable that runs full-screen. In addition, there needs to be a menu/shell overlay program running simultaneously. The menu/shell will allow users to pause games, switch to other games, check their game history, etc. Some key requirements of the shell: it intercepts all user input (mainly multitouch) first before passing it on to the currently running game (so that it can, for instance, know to pop-up at a "pause" command); can reveal on arbitrary portions of the screen, with the currently running (but presumably paused) game still showing underneath, ideally with its shape/size being dynamic, to allow for creation of an animated in/out drawer effect over the game. I'm currently looking into different architectural approaches to this problem, including Fraps and DirectX overlays, but I'm sure I'm missing some ways to think about this. What are the main approaches I should be considering? (Note the table is currently being run by Windows PC, but it could potentially be a Linux box instead.)

• Google and Gmail only work on one laptop and not the other two

  We have Comcast internet and everything was fine until recently. I am currently using my father-in-law's PC, and Gmail, Paypal, and Google all work fine. They don't work on my laptop or my husband's. We've reset the router/modem several times and nothing works. So we unplugged the main line outside and it fixed it for two weeks but now it's back to being stupid again. We've tried everything else and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

• rsyslog forward all except ldap

  I have Centos 6 servers running openLDAP. In the rsyslog.conf, I forward the logs to my central server with this line: *.* @10.10.10.10:514 openldap seems incredibly chatty. I have 3 servers in a multi-master cluster. Those 3 servers generate twice as many logs as my other 80 servers combined. I have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to tell openLDAP to use a sensible log level. (we never specifically set the log level) Since these are my main authentication sources, I'm a bit hesitant to "play around" with them. Is there a way to tell rsyslog to forward everything EXCEPT LOCAL4?

• Is writing recursive functions hard for you?

  I'm taking a computer science course now. I feel it is so hard compared to my polytechnic IT course. I can't understand recursive methods well. How do you manage to get your brain to understand it? When the recursive method returns back, my brain can not trace it nicely. Is there a better way to understand recursion? How do you start learning it? Is it normal that feel that it is very hard at then beginning? • Domain only responding to certain locations?

  I have a client who's been having problems with his site. The server doesn't seem to want to load hes site in certain countries, though other sites are fine. But this site [link removed] only seems to load in the US and Canada. In Europe, the UK, Asia etc, the site seems to be blocked (been like this for a week now). I've looked over the server and it seems fine. Other sites work fine, and the NS are set up properly, pointing to my main server, at http://puu.sh/MIGF Any ideas?

• C++ program...overshoots? [migrated]

  I'm decent at C++, but I may have missed some nuance that applies here. Or maybe I completely missed a giant concept, I have no idea. My program was instantly crashing ("blah.exe is not responding") about 1/5 times it was run (other times it ran completely fine) and I tracked the problem down to a constructor for a world class that was called once in the beginning of the main function. Here is the code (in the constructor) that causes the problem: int ii; for(ii=0;ii<=255;ii++) { cout<<"ent "<<ii<<endl; entity_list[ii]=NULL; } for(ii=0;ii<=255;ii++) { cout<<"sec "<<ii<<endl; sector_list[ii]=NULL; } entity_list[0] = new Entity(0,0); entity_list[0]->_world = this; Specifically the second for loop. The cout references are new for the sake of telling where it is having trouble. It would print the entire "ent 1" to "ent 255" and then "sec 1" to "sec 255" and then crash right after, as if it was going for a 257th run through of the second for loop. I set the second for loop to go until "ii<=254" which stopped all crashes. Does C++ code tend to "overshoot" for loops or something? What is causing it to crash at this specific loop seemingly at random? By the way, entity_list and sector_list point to classes called Entity and Sector, respectively, but they are not constructing anything so I didn't think it would be relevant. I also have a forward declaration for the Entity class in a header for this, but since none were being constructed I didn't think it was relevant either. EDIT: It was due to the new Entity line, I assumed wrongly that the fact that altering the for statement to 254 fixed the crashes meant that it had to be there. I still don't understand why the for loop is related, though.

• Which FTP Daemon should I use if I want to use MySQL for authentication?

  We want to set up a FTP Daemon on our Ubuntu 10.04 server that can use a simple (probably custom) built web interface for a FTP server using MySQL for authentication. It'll be public facing but only intended for use by a few customers or clients. I know vsftpd, ProFTPd, and Pure-FTPd but I'm not sure which is best for this application. Main features we would like: a. Very good MySQL authentication integration b. Able to specify a list folders/files (folder level is sufficient) each user has access to through MySQL Anything else would just be sprinkles on top.

• PDF form created in Libre Office - trouble with form fields and font sizing

  I am trying to create a PDF Form using LibreOffice. I can create the form elements and export as PDF. However, the form fields are giving me problems. The text in these fields always centers on the bottom, and often the text you input is cut off at the bottom. I found that if I make the fields larger, the text no longer cuts off, but the field is exceptionally large with lots of space above the text. I have made an odt (source) and a pdf (export) file to show what I'm running into. I tried a number of different fonts and sizes, but to make things easier, I made the field names all "field1" so that once you fill out one entry, all fields show as filled in. http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.odt http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.pdf My main question is how do I make form fields that don't cut off the text without having to make the fields way oversized? • Can't install software from Ubuntu software center

  I've been experimenting with Ubuntu 10.04(64bit) inside a VirtualBox VM. This isn't my first experience with Linux, but I'm still very much a Linux noob. Whenever I try to install software from the Ubuntu Software Center, the installation gets interrupted and I get a warning that this installation requires untrusted sources. I can install anything I want using apt-get, it's just the gui that doesn't work. I've done research on the issue and taken the following precautions with no result: under software sources Allowed Canonical partners Allowed source code Changed the download source to main server I get no errors when running an apt-get update. Can anyone shed some light on the issue?

• What is the best way to exploit multicores when making multithread games?

  Many people suggest to write a program, and then start optimizing it. But I think that when it's coming to multithreading with multicore, a little think ahead is required. I've read about using threads, and experienced it myself during some courses at the university (still a student). The big question is simple, but a bit abstract: What thread related steps in game design do I need to take, before implementation? Now trying to be more specific. Let's say, as an example, that I'm making a small board game (like Monopoly) that I want to be multithreaded. My goal Is that this multithreaded game will exploit the best of the multicore system, lets say 4-6 cores (like in i7 processors). My answer to this question at the moment is, one thread for each of these four basic components: GUI User Input / Output AI (computer rival) Other game related calculations (like shortest path from A to B, or level up status change) I'm not an expert (yet!), and I'm sure there are better answers out there. Any suggestion, answer, different approach will be helpful. Some thoughts: Maybe splitting the main database is a good way.. (or total disaster.. )

• PyGTK/Quickly Add string to ListStore

  I'm trying to build an application that will prompt the user for a string, and then add that string to a Scrolling Listview object using quickly and PyGTK. I've been following this tutorial: http://developer.ubuntu.com/resources/app-developer-cookbook/multimedia/creating-a-simple-media-player/ When I hit the add button, the prompt comes up properly and I'm able to enter the string. The column appears correctly but the list ends up being blank.
