• Where is the iPhone app EULA displayed for the user?

  I am planning to submit an iPhone app for certain special purpose calculations. I want to add a legal disclaimer about the calculations somewhere so that the user can see it atleast once before starting to use the app. Should this go into the EULA that may be submitted as part of app submission process? Or should that be a one time screen shown when the app is started first time? What is the right way? Thanks for responses.

• Middleware with generic communication media layer

  Greetings all, I'm trying to implement middleware (driver) for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our servers (or a pda/laptop in used in field). Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that? What is the best way how to do it? Example: Device connects to our Linux server. New middleware instance is created (on the server) which announces itself to one of the running services (details are not important). The service is responsible for making sure that device's time is synchronized. So it asks the middleware what is the device's time, driver translates it to device language (protocol) and sends the message, device responses and driver again translates it for the service. This might seem as a bit overkill for such a simple request but imagine there are more complex requests which the driver must translate, also there are several versions of the device which use different protocol, etc. but would use the same time sync service. The goal is to abstract the devices through the drivers to be able to use the same service to communicate with them. Another example: we find out that the remote communications with the device are down. So we send somebody out with PDA, he connects to the device using USB cable. Starts up the application which has the same functionality as the timesync service. Again middleware instance is created (on the PDA) to translate communication between application and the device this time only using USB/serial media not TCP/IP as in previous example. • Who to run Marcomedia Projector executables on Windows 7?

  When I try to use an old app created using Macromedia Projector in Windows 7, it crashes after the first few screens. The same programs works fine on XP. I receive this error message after a few screens: Error A Fatal Error has occurred. Click OK to Quit. Pressing OK brings me a fresh one: Microsoft Visual C++ runtime Library This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. And finally I get a Macromedia Projector has stopped working message. I have already tried adjusting compatibility mode, or adding this program to the Data Execution Prevention exceptions, but none helped.

• Can any postfix guru assist me determine how emails are still being sent via my server from unauthorized sources?

  Hi all, I'm getting a little concerned as I run a small server hosting a number of websites and manage the email for a few dozen people. Just recently though I've had a couple of notifications from spamcop alerting me that spam has been sent from my server, and when I have a look over the logs from time to time I can indeed see that there are many repeated attempts of mail being sent from my server. Most of the time it gets knocked back from the destination servers but sometimes its getting through. Unfortunately I'm not linux or postfix expert, I can get by but had though I had my machine locked down quite securely, I don't allow relaying, when I check the online DNS/MX tools they tend to report my server as being OK so I'm not sure where to take it now and hoping someone might be able to throw me a few pointers. • Testing for disk write

  I'm writing an application for storing lots of images (size <5MB) on an ext3 filesystem, this is what I have for now. After some searching here on serverfault I have decided for a structure of directories like this: 000/000/000000001.jpg ... 236/519/236519107.jpg This structure will allow me to save up to 1'000'000'000 images as I'll store a max of 1'000 images in each leaf. I've created it, from a theoretical point of view seems ok to me (though I've no experience on this), but I want to find out what will happen when there will be directories full of files in there. A question about creating this structure: is it better to create it all in one go (takes approx 50 minutes on my pc) or should I create directories as they are needed? From a developer point of view I think the first option is better (no extra waiting time for the user), but from a sysadmin point of view, is this ok? I've thought I could do as if the filesystem is already under the running application, I'll make a script that will save images as fast as it can, monitoring things as follows: how much time does it take for an image to be saved when there is no or little space used? how does this change when the space starts to be used up? how much time does it take for an image to be read from a random leaf? Does this change a lot when there are lots of files? Does launching this command sync; echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches has any sense at all? Is this the only thing I have to do to have a clean start if I want to start over again with my tests? Do you have any suggestions or corrections?

• Apache taking up a lot of CPU while running request-tracker4

  I am trying out a request-tracker installation on an EC2 micro instance. The specs for the micro instance are as follows 1) Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, 613MB RAM, 8GB Hard Drive 2) Running request-tracker 4.0.4 from the repository, perl 5.14.2, Apache2, MySQL5 3) Request-tracker4.0.4 running with mod_perl2 and Worker mpm 4) Apache configured with Worker MPM. Config snippet given below Timeout 150 KeepAlive On MaxKeepAliveRequests 60 KeepAliveTimeout 2 <IfModule mpm_worker_module> StartServers 2 MinSpareThreads 25 MaxSpareThreads 75 ThreadLimit 64 ThreadsPerChild 25 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> Now when I start Apache2 it works fine for some time and after a while the CPU load shoots up to 99% or more. Usually it is one or more Apache processes doing this. I've tried a to modify the worker module configuration without any luck. The log files for both Apache2 and request-tracker4 are set to log debug messages and don't show anything to indicate what could be causing this. The system gets a maximum of 5 users at any given time and usually (90% of the time) it is just 2. I've just installed it and we only have 20 tickets in the database. I don't think its the memory thats causing the issue since the server isn't swapping or even close to it and I hardly see the memory usage go up. Would appreciate any pointers on how to go about troubleshooting this. In case it helps I've also tried this out a similar installation on a small instance (Identical settings except RAM bumped upto 1.7GB) and I still see the issue.

  Hi, Is there a way to calculate a time stamp for the next coming up of a week day? So for instance, with friday, i'd like to be able to run some code that calculates that from today Wednesday 19/05/10, the next friday will be 21/05/10 and get a time stamp from it. I know the date command can parse a given string date according to a format, but I can't figure out how to calculate "next friday from today" Any idea? Cheers Ben

  I'm having some serious performance issues with a multi-million row table that I feel I should be able to get results from fairly quick. Here's a run down of what I have, how I'm querying it, and how long it's taking: I'm running SQL Server 2008 Standard, so Partitioning isn't currently an option I'm attempting to aggregate all views for all inventory for a specific account over the last 30 days. • Trying to write a loop that uses an OutputStream to write to a text file.

  I'm not a java programmer, I'm a VB programmer. I am doing this as part of an assignment, however, I'm not asking for help on something assignment related. I'd like to figure out how to get the OutputStreamWriter to work properly in this instance. I just want to capture the values I'm generating and place them into a text document. The file is generated, but only one entry exists, not the 40 I'm expecting. I could do this in a heartbeat with VB, but java feels very strange to me right now. Your help is appreciated. • How do you do a keyword search the Services.msc (mmc) window in Windows 7?

  When you want to run a service, you have very limited capabilities, in all current Windows versions, as far as I can tell. I usually start Services by typing "services.msc" into the Start-Run box, on most versions of Windows, this works. I know how to click the "Name" column in the MMC view of Windows Services. If you know what the first few characters of a service name is, you can usually sort by the name, and type the prefix to scroll the list down (find Windows Search for example). This seems pretty weak to me, so I spent some time searching the interwebs for tools that do a better job of managing services. Usually I have a keyword that I know "fooWare" might be the keyword, and I need to find the (usually badly named) service and start it and stop it. This is often WAY too hard. The best I could do is "NET SERVICES" from the command line, and maybe add a grep in there, but that doesn't list every service, only a few of them. And the MMC snap-in in Win7 now has an Export List button, exporting to csv text file feature which I have used from time to time, to export and then search. I have thought of writing my own tool. I'm hoping a better "service manager" utility exists out there that sysadmins use. I'd like a search box at the top right corner, kind of the same way that the Add-Remove-Programs dialog in Win7 and Vista has a search facility. Does such a services utility exist out there?

• Prevent automatic popToRootViewController on double-tap of UITabBarController

  The default behavior of a UITabBarController is to pop the contained UINavigationController to the root view controller when a particular tab is tapped a second time. I have a particular use case where I'm wanting this to not work automatically, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to prevent this. Has anyone run into this, and if so, what did you do? Do I need to subclass UINavigationController and override popToRootViewController or is there a simpler way?

• Unable to specify parameters to cvlc in a script

  I'm creating a script that issues a few curl commands in order to access a time-protected mms stream link, then set up a relay using cvlc (vlc's command line interface) for my own use on an unencumbered player. The curl aspect of this is working, as I can run as a browser and curl side by side and get the same access url. (It's time locked meaning the stream will work forever, but you have to connect quickly or the URL will time out.) The very end of the script prints the command I will run, which is then followed up by "exec $CMD". When I echo $CMD I get: cvlc --sout '#standard{access=http,mux=asf,dst=0.0.0.0:58194}' mms://[...] Manually Copy/Pasting this command in, verbatim, works perfectly fine, but as part of a script, the cvlc execution output says: [0x9743d0] main interface error: no suitable interface module [0x962120] main libvlc error: interface "globalhotkeys,none" initialization failed [0x9743d0] dummy interface: using the dummy interface module... • Sun Grid Engine (SGE) / limiting simultaneous array job sub-tasks

  I am installing a Sun Grid Engine environment and I have a scheduler limit that I can't quite figure out how to implement. My users will create array jobs that have hundreds of sub-tasks. I would like to be able to limit those jobs to only running a set number of tasks at the same time, independent of other jobs. Like I might have one array job that I want to run 20 tasks at a time, and another I want to run 50 tasks at a time, and yet another that I'm fine running without limit. It seems like this ought to be doable, but I can't figure it out. There's a max_aj_instances configuration option, but that appears to apply globally to all array jobs. I can't see any way to use consumable resources, as I'd need a "complex attribute" that is per-job, and that feature doesn't seem to exist. It didn't look like resource quotas would work, but now I'm not so sure of that. It says "A resource quota set defines a maximum resource quota for a particular job request", but it's unclear if an array job's sub-tasks' resource requests will be aggregated for the purposes of the resource quota. I'm going to play with this, but hopefully someone already knows outright.

  I'm using rails for the first time, and I love how test-oriented it is and how it encourages you to write tests. I'm just having a hard time figuring out what I should be testing when I test controllers and views. I know that you should test redirects and authorization in the controller tests, but what else? And what should go in view tests? If I'm "following the rules" and only putting loops, conditionals, and echoes in my views, then what is there left to test?

• RDP or SSH connection trough Windows 2008 server VPN hang after a while

  I have been experiencing a very strange issue with our VPN setup on Windows Server 2008. That server is running as a Xen Virtual Machine. We use it for two purposes, permit our mobile workers to connect to another server hosted somewhere else that only allow that ip, and use it to RDP or ssh to many other virtual machine on the same server. The server has no performance issue and still a load of memory free. All other virtual machine has no problem whatsoever. Many of those virtual machine have public IP (web servers) and all their firewall are set to allow only ssh connection or RDP connection from their local interface. When I am connecting directly with either ssh or RDP to one of the other virtual machine everything run without any issues. However, when I am doing so through the VPN after some time the connection just hang, it usually continue after some time (5 or 10 minutes). It seems as more there is network usage more often it happen to a point where it is completely unusable. The worst thing I can do to hang it faster is to actually ping the vpn client IP from the local network, after some time the latency increase until it hang. This happen even if I do RDP to the local ip of the VPN server trough the VPN. The server report no problem and if I disconnect to the vpn and reconnect right away everything is alright. There is nothing wrong in the VPN server log. I have taught at the beginning that it could have been an issue with the Host server so I try to RDP,ssh directly to the guest and I have experience no issue while doing this, so it really seems to be a problem with the VPN server on Windows server 2008. Another very weird thing is it does not seems to be of any issue if you only do Internet (NAT) without trying to connect to any local ips.
