  • Windows Server 2008 R2 bare metal restore to different hardware

    Scenario: I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 installation whose main disk drive is now 7 years old and showing signs of age. For the last couple of months it's been displaying increased errors and requirements to run checkdisk. I have successfully created a bare metal restore (BMR) image on a separate data drive on the server, which can be seen from the Windows Recovery console; I tested it by booting to and using the Windows Server installation DVD's recovery utilities. The BMR image includes the system drive with boot partition, system state, and the D:\ drive of the server, which is where I have followed the practice of installing any program that does not require a C:\ installation path. Therefore, the BMR includes both the C:\ and D:\ drives, system state and boot partition. The C:\ drive is a 7-year old Seagate 160GB. The D:\ drive is a rather newer 120GB Western Digital. I have purchased a 128GB solid state Samsung 830 that I want to restore these partitions to, using the BMR. Questions: In the above-referenced article, Microsoft seems to be indicating that I am only able to restore to like-kind hardware, which doesn't help at all and is difficult to believe. Is this really true? I've cleaned these drives up and minimized the size of partition they require. C:\ will need about a 70GB partition, and the data on D:\ will need about 50GB. Will Windows Server backup allow me to restore the BMR to newly-created partitions on the SSD, discarding extra space? I don't need a "how-to": I just need an "is it possible". One option is the smallest of the Amazon cloud machines. The question becomes can I make one of these machines a domain controller? Cost wise the Amazon machine is cheaper than the power costs of keeping a server (or a PC) up and running in his home office 24x7 thanks to the high cost of power in Southern California.

  • Why does a hard disk suddenly look to Windows as if it "needs to be formatted"?

    This is more of a theory question, but what are the reason(s) for a disk to suddenly cause Windows to start saying it "needs to be formatted"? It happens to an IDE disk that I have in a cheap external enclosure, and I can usually get most of the data back by using software like recuva. It's now happened to an internal disk I have. I'm not looking for software to fix this (although links would be appreciated), but rather a low-level explanation as to what gets corrupted on the disk.

    I have multiple computers, some have a 10/100 ethernet adapter while others have a 10/100/1000 ones. If I connect them together with the Cisco sg100-08 switch, do I keep the 1Gbit speed where possible (between two devices at 1Gbit speed) or the whole lan slows down to 100mbit? I checked Cisco website but I couldn't find this kind of information, nor I was able to register to the Cisco support to ask this question (the registration form does not work)

  • mysqldump trigger crashed tables

    We had a database crash this morning starting at 1 minute past midnight (when the database backup runs). The exception emails I was getting said "Table './core/content' is marked as crashed and should be repaired". My question is basically, can mysqldump cause tables to crash, if so how and why? And are there any tools which can detect a crashed table and run a repair on it? Thanks in advance.

  • Trimming / cropping a movie file ?

    Now, I'm not really sure what's the exact term here. As far as I saw, cropping is related to video size. I need a program to trim some parts of the video file. On a timescale, for example, from 0-60s, I'd like to trim the parts from 14-20s, and from 30-35s. Can anyone give a recommendation for such an application ? The movie in question is a .MOV file, so Windows Movie Maker doesn't work.

    I have a FTP7.5 on my Windows 2008 server and would like to use this for FXP, however regardless of the other server in question I can never complete a transfer. It always fails with this message: [L] 501-Server cannot accept argument. [L] Win32 error: The parameter is incorrect. [L] Error details: Client IP on the control channel didn't match the client IP on the data channel. I've tested normal use and it works fine, is there any setting I can change to allow for FXP?

  • Why does no small Rj45 port exist?

    While I bought my last Tablet I noticed that no Tablet (and most smaller notebooks /convertibles) has a Rj45 port. Which I finde quite dissatisfying since I like to use RJ45 in numerous places. I think a reason could be that Rj45 is simply too big for a Tablet - it is downright massive compared to micro USB /HDMI etc. But that leads me to my question: Why is there no attempt to build a smaller micro-Rj45 port which could be used in constrained spaces?

    I feel shy to ask this question, but if I don't I will never know, so here I am giving it a shot: I notice most shell commands use "-" for options, but I also noticed some commands do not have it. For example, to archive files in a given direct, the command is: tar czvf allmyfiles.tar.gz * However, to extract an archive, the command I learned, is: tar -zxvf allmyfiles.tar.gz Looking at both examples above, is there any significance whether to include the hyphen or not?

    When i made a new drive it take some space for system file FAT32 take the less space, then NTFS, then ext4 my question how to know the space will be taken for the system before make the drive, if the drive 1giga or 100giga for FAT32, NTFS, ext4. Edit: when make 10MB drive with FAT32 the size shown 9.9 when make 10MB drive with ext4 the size shown 8.1 the same thing with the bigger size there always some space used and there is no files on the drive, so where this space go, if it for the filesystem how i can calculate the space that will be taken before format the drive
