• make: invoke command for multiple targets of multiple files?

  Hi, I looking to optimize an existing Makefile. It's used to create multiple plots (using Octave) for every logfile in a given directory using an scriptfile for every plot which takes a logfilename as an argument. In the Moment, I use one single rule for every kind of plot available, with a handwritten call to Octave, giving the specific scriptfile/logfile as an argument. It would be nice, if every plot has "his" octave-script as a dependency (plus the logfile, of course), so only one plot is regenerated if his script is changed. Since I don't want to type that much, I wonder how I can simplifiy this by using only one general rule to build "a" plot? To make it clearer: Logfile: "$(LOGNAME).log" Scriptfile: "plot$(PLOTNAME).m" creates "$(LOGNAME)_$(PLOTNAME).png" The first thing I had in mind: %1_%2.png: %1.log $(OCTAVE) --eval "plot$<2('$<1')" But this seems not to be allowed. Could someone give me a hint?

• MySQL encoding problem

  I use Java and JDBC to save japanese characters and it works perfectly on my local MySQL. But when I tried doing the same thing on my web hotels MySQL i get ????? instead of japanese characters. I have made the exact same tables and use exact same code. The only difference I have found is SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'CHAR%' character_set_client utf8 character_set_connection utf8 character_set_database latin1 character_set_filesystem binary character_set_results utf8 character_set_server latin1 character_set_system utf8 character_sets_dir /s/usr-local/share/mysql/charsets/ character_set_datbase is set to latin1. But I can't change it! Any tips?

• Can there be two public section in a class? If yes then why ? And in which circumstances we do so?

  Dear all I have a doubt related to class. For example class A { public: A() { ..... ..... } void cleanup() { .... .... .... } public: UINT a; ULONG b; }; In the above example there are two public section, In first section i am defining constructor and the method and in the second section i am declaring data members. Does the above class i.e. A is correct. Can we do so? If yes then why we needed and in which circumstances we should use it?   I'd really like to start including shopping cart functionality in my projects. At first im content relying on paypal links, but I really want to be learning about specific security threats and how to combat them. Eventually I want to feel comfortable receiving and sending customer credit card details for ecommerce. Obviously this is a common thing on the net but most tutorials and resources are content to say "it's every web developers responsibility to consider security, but we're not going to cover that here/today/ever." so, my question is, where is a good place to learn? And once I've learned, how do I stay abreast of new vulnerabilities as the web evolves?

• How Do I Remove The First 4 Characters From A String If It Matches A Pattern In Ruby

  I have the following string: "h3. My Title Goes Here" I basically want to remove the first 4 characters from the string so that I just get back: "My Title Goes Here". The thing is I am iterating over an array of strings and not all have the h3. part in front so I can't just ditch the first 4 characters blindly. I have checked the docs and the closest think I could find was chomp, but that only works for the end of a string. Right now I am doing this: "h3. My Title Goes Here".reverse.chomp(" .3h").reverse This gives me my desired output, but there has to be a better way right? I mean I don't want to reverse a string twice for no reason. I am new to programming so I might have missed something obvious, but I didn't see the opposite of chomp anywhere in the docs. Is there another method that will work? Thanks!

• jquery lightbox inline - without popup

  i like jquery lightbox control looks nice and shows me a title one 1 of x images etc. I need exactly the same thing but without pop up. So whas is now visible after i click thumnail of image i want it to by visible as inline content somewhere on my page with first image loaded and then i could just use next prev. of course in this case, close would not be applicable. Does anybode know such a jquery plugin or how to change lightbox to work withoud popup? Thanks.

  I found this very cool C++ sample , literally the "Hello World!" of genetic algorithms. I so decided to re-code the whole thing in C# and this is the result. Now I am asking myself: is there any practical application along the lines of generating a target string starting from a population of random strings? EDIT: my buddy on twitter just tweeted that "is useful for transcription type things such as translation. Does not have to be Monkey's". I wish I had a clue.

• Handle Enter Key on Website (ASP and VB)

  So I have a website with multiple asp controls. When I press enter inside by login form, the search function runs because it's the first thing found on the page. How would I handle the enter button so that when the active textbox is for the login form, the loginbutton code actually runs rather than the searchbutton. One last problem is that the login controls are inside a loginview so the hierarchy shows that the asp:textbox and asp:button for logging in are inside 3 tags like so: <loginview> <login> <logintemplate> //controls are here. </logintemplate> </login> Just a note that all controls are asp and that all code is prefered in VB. It works fairly well, but I think it might work better if I were to do it with Javascript instead. How could I accomplish the same thing with Javascript? • Communicating from website to desktop application (not vice-versa)

  I am designing an application such that it will have to react to certain actions required by the website, mostly the same way Last.FM client does (if you have used one) The way Last.FM client works is that, it will register a custom protocol in Windows (lastfm://) and on their website, they use that protocol to trigger certain action on the player, e.g.: lastfm://artist//similarartists will actually direct any Last.FM client running to load up similar artists. I would like to do the same thing for my application. Is this a good idea? Is there any good alternatives to send a message from a website to a desktop client in this manner?

• Trouble with creating WPF window extended on the title area (like Office 2007/2010)

  I want to make WPF window extended on the title area (like Office 2007/2010). I implemented DwmWindow (see DwmTest.zip) where I put required stuff. Commonly, it works fine except one disgusting thing: the window appears as white rectangle (see DwmIssue.png) and after a few second this rectangle disappears and the content of the window is shown (see DwmIssueCorrect.png). This bug is essential only for my window. • Adding Colours (Colors) Together like Paint (Blue + Yellow = Green, etc)

  I'm making an iOS game using cocos2d libraries. Lets say you have two objects that have two separate colours - defined in RGB as Blue: 0,0,255 Yellow: 255,255,0 I want to add blue and yellow to make green. To over complicate things, let's say that the Blue object is bigger than the Yellow object (for the sake of argument let's say that the ratio is 2:1), I'm adding twice as much blue as yellow - how to I calculate this new (light green) colour correctly. I understand LAB * Color Space is useful for this sort of 'natural colour' kind of thing, but I'm not sure how to use it - especially in the context of a cocos2d object which (AFAIK) is limited to using RGB in its colour schemes. I'd really appreciate practical help on how to implement this. Thanks heaps!

  I have been trying to migrate a database from sybase to Mysql. This is my approach: Generate pojo classes from my sybase database using hibernate in eclipse Use these pojo classes to generate the schema in mysql database Then somehow migrate the data from sybase to mysql I guess this approach should work??? Please let me know if there is any better or easier approach. The thing is I am not even able to get the first step done. I searched a lot of forums, tried to google it, but I not able to find any solution. Can anybody tell me what mistake I am making here or point to some hibernate tutorial for eclipse??

• How can I synchronize database access between a write-thread and a read-thread?

  My program has two threads: Main execution thread that handles user input and queues up database writes A utility thread that wakes up every second and flushes the writes to the database Inside the main thread, I occasionally need to make reads on the database. When this happens, performance is not important, but correctness is. (In a perfect world, I would be reading from a cache, not making a round-trip to the database - but let's put that aside for the sake of discussion.) How do I make sure that the main thread sees a correct / quiescent database? A standard mutex won't work, since I run the risk of having the main thread grab the mutex before the data gets flushed to the database. This would be a big race condition. What I really want is some sort of mutex that lets the main thread of execution proceed only AFTER the mutex has been grabbed and released once. Does such a thing exist? What's the best way to solve this problem?

• In C, would !~b ever be faster than b == 0xff ?

  From a long time ago I have a memory which has stuck with me that says comparisons against zero are faster than any other value (ahem Z80). In some C code I'm writing I want to skip values which have all their bits set. Currently the type of these values is char but may change. I have two different alternatives to perform the test: if (!~b) /* skip */ and if (b == 0xff) /* skip */ Apart from the latter making the assumption that b is an 8bit char whereas the former does not, would the former ever be faster due to the old compare to zero optimization trick, or are the CPUs of today way beyond this kind of thing?

• keep open windows console after a python syntax error

  File associations on my machine (winxp home) are such that a python script is directly opened with the python interpreter. If I double click on a python script a console window runs and every thing is fine - as long as there is no syntax error in the script. In that case the console window opens up for a moment but it is closed immediately. Too fast to read the error message. Of course their would be the possibility to manually open a console window and to execute the script by typing python myscript.py but I am sure that there is a more convenient (i.e. "double click based") solution.

• In WPF using a ListView is there an elegant way to auto resize items?

  I recently wrote, my first, WPF application that has a list of items that are polled from a web-serivce. The items are displayed/data-bound in a ListView via a GridView. A background thread periodically polls the web-serivce and updates the list. If, say, I had three items initially bound to the ListView that simply display a description and the three descriptions where something like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC Later a new item is added with a description of 'AReallyReallyLongProjectName', I would end up with a list like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC - AReallyR The GridViewColumn would not update it's width and would subsequently cut off any new items that extended the original width. I added this bit of code which forces the column to resize, but it just seems a little hacky. (Just seems weird to set a width just to set it back to nothing to force the resize) if(gridView != null) { foreach(var column in gridView.Columns) { if (double.IsNaN(column.Width) column.Width = column.ActualWidth; column.Width = double.NaN; } } Is there a better, more elegant solution, to accomplish this same thing?

• MySQL - Return number of rows matching query data?

  I have a query as follows: SELECT 1 FROM shop_inventory a JOIN shop_items b ON b.id=a.iid AND b.szbid=3362169 AND b.cid=a.cid WHERE a.cid=1 GROUP BY a.bought The only thing I need to do with this data is work out the number of rows returned (which I could do with mysqli -> num_rows;. However, I would like to know if there is a method to return the number of rows that match the query, without having to run num_rows? For example, the query should return one row, with one result, number_of_rows. I hope this makes sense!

  I have a few questions: I know what gettext is. I've read a few posts where they mentioned xgettext and was curious as to what is the difference between the two. How can I install xgettext on Windows? And finally, does anybody have a tutorial on how to install the library php-gettext http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/php-gettext/ (this one usually doesn't come with PHP) I've read about it in an article but I'm not sure how to get it working in Windows. The thing is, sometimes when you make changes, you need to restart Apache to see the new data with the gettext that comes with PHP (but with the library you don't need to restart it) so I wanted to use the library for development. • jQuery Ajax: Copy - Paste thingy

  Hi everyone, I have a form where a check an input field for its value and then i do an Ajax call using the typewatch plugin ( a small little thing which detects that the user has stopped typing after a predefined interval ). It works great. As this field is a "coupon discount" in an order form, the value could be entered by copy pasting the "coupon code" from an email or something. It also works with Ctrl+C - Ctrl+V for Copy and paste but not when a user selects the text with the mouse, clicks copy from the context menu and then paste from this menu. Is there a way in jQuery to check for this kind of behaviour in jQuery somehow?

  I have a sql file test.sql used to run some SQL (create object / update / delete / insert) that can look like this CREATE TABLE test_dbi1 ( test_dbi_intr_no NUMBER(15) , test_dbi_name VARCHAR2(100); UPDATE mytable SET col1=1; CREATE TABLE test_dbi2 ( test_dbi_intr_no NUMBER(15) , test_dbi_name VARCHAR2(100); Usually, i would just use SQLPLUS (from within Perl) to execute this test.sql using this command : @test.sql Is there a way to do the same thing, using DBI in Perl ? So far, i found DBI can only execute one statement at a time, and without the ";" at the end.

Currenly i have a map in my application and the operating system will ask the user if it wants to allow the use of geolocations. Now thats all nice but the thing is i want to change my app when geolocations is allowed to a so called "Geo location" mode where new options are available or "standard" mode with less ui elements when permissions are not granted. What can i use to check if permission is granted?. So basicaly is that an api that tells me permission granted yes or no.

  My problem is rather complex to explain, so I'll show you an example: http://ewolf.bplaced.de/misc/float.htm I want to have a floated element (the blue box) to be be placed over two other elements (red and green) and I want the whole thing to be fixed-width and centered (done by the box with the black border) while the background of the red and green box should fill the whole width. I'm actually not quite sure if the way I've done it now is XHTML/CSS valid, but it works - at least in Firefox. In IE6, the green box expands to fit the whole blue box - how can I fix this in IE6 or find another solution to show it correctly in all browsers?

(Update: just like in algorithm, we know there are sorting problems, shuffling problems, and we know some solutions to them. This question is aiming at the same thing). For example, ones I can think of are: Get a list of Employees and their boss. Or one with the employee's salary greater than the boss. (Self-join) Get a list of the most popular Classes registered by students, from the greatest number to the smallest. • Problem with detecting phone orientation change in Symbian/Qt

  I want to do some custom processing when the orientation of the phone changes. I have re-implemented the resizeEvent(QResizeEvent*) virtual function in my class. The strange thing is, for the first one time when the phone orientation is changed, this function is actually called, and works fine. But all subsequent orientation changes, this function isn't even called? Why does this happen? Are there any other ways to detect phone orientation change? Thanks.
