• Registering OCX on 64-bit Windows 7

  I want to use MSCOMM control in my MS Excel 2010 VBA. The control shall appear in Tools-> Additional Controls dialog box in VBE of MS Excel 2010. I am trying to register MSCOMM32.OCX on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. However, as I try to register it using regsvr32 as shown in the command window below, I am getting shown error popup. What am I missing here? Why is this component not getting registered? Or this is not the correct way to include MSCOMM control in MS Excel VBA? • SQL Server 2008 - Editing Tables: Bit columns require 'True' or 'False'

  Not so much a question as an observation... I'm just upgrading to SQL Server 2008 on my development machine in anticipation of upgrading my live applications. I didn't anticipate any problems since [I think] I generally use standard T-SQL, and probably not too far from ANSI standard SQL. So far so good, but I was really thrown by a very simple change: I was creating a simple, small look-up table to store a list of codes and including a bit column to indicate the current default code. But when I used the new/modified 'Edit Top 200 Rows' option, and entered my 0s and 1s in the the bit column I got an error: 'Invalid value for cell - String was not recognised as a valid boolean' After a bit of head-scratching, I tried True and False - and they worked. So it seems this new Edit feature requires 4 or 5 characters to be typed, rather than the previous 1. Checking further, we can still use '...where bitval = 1' but can now also use '...where bitval = 'true''. But any results returned render these bit columns as 0 or 1 still. It all sounds like half a step backwards. Not the end of the world, but and unnecessary annoyance. Does anybody have any insight on this issue? Or there any other new Gotchas with SQL Server 2008?

  I use std::tr1::shared_ptr extensively throughout my application. This includes passing objects in as function arguments. Consider the following: class Dataset {...} void f( shared_ptr< Dataset const > pds ) {...} void g( shared_ptr< Dataset const > pds ) {...} ... While passing a dataset object around via shared_ptr guarantees its existence inside f and g, the functions may be called millions of times, which causes a lot of shared_ptr objects being created and destroyed. Here's a snippet of the flat gprof profile from a recent run: Each sample counts as 0.01 seconds. % cumulative self self total time seconds seconds calls s/call s/call name 9.74 295.39 35.12 2451177304 0.00 0.00 std::tr1::__shared_count::__shared_count(std::tr1::__shared_count const&) 8.03 324.34 28.95 2451252116 0.00 0.00 std::tr1::__shared_count::~__shared_count() So, ~17% of the runtime was spent on reference counting with shared_ptr objects. Is this normal? A large portion of my application is single-threaded and I was thinking about re-writing some of the functions as void f( const Dataset& ds ) {...} and replacing the calls shared_ptr< Dataset > pds( new Dataset(...) ); f( pds ); with f( *pds ); in places where I know for sure the object will not get destroyed while the flow of the program is inside f(). But before I run off to change a bunch of function signatures / calls, I wanted to know what the typical performance hit of passing by shared_ptr was. Seems like shared_ptr should not be used for functions that get called very often. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks for reading. -Artem

  Ubuntu Deluge shows errors when downloading large bit torrent files and keeps erroring out after trying to resume. The error on details shows: "Invalid argument". This happens for many large torrents that are running for several days (trying to download.) I try to "resume" and "force rechceck" but it never works. Smaller torrents seem to work ok. What is causing these torrents to never complete? Is there a way to force Deluge to keep auto-resuming every few minutes after a failure instead of just giving up?

• Slower wireless speed in Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit) on Asus USB-N13

  I have an Asus USB-N13 which I use for wireless internet on my desktop. The download speed I get on Windows 7 (dual-boot) is 15.22 Mbps. On Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit) I can only get 1.09 Mbps. I asked a question about this on the Ubuntu forums as well, but I did not get an answer. • Excel Add-In not loading properly with 64-bit Excel 2013

  I have an Excel Add-In saved to an .xla file in %appdata%\Microsoft\Addins. In the subject version of Excel it is checked on the Add-Ins list. One thing this addin does is create a drop-down menu in ThisWorkbook's Workbook_Open sub. But the menu is not created and there is no Add-Ins tab on the ribbon. No error messages. This works fine in Excel 2010 and 2007 (at least), and worked fine on the 32-bit Excel 2013 that came preinstalled on this system before I nuked it. The really maddening thing is that if I get rid of this addin and open that same .xla file, either by double-clicking or using the Open command in Excel, the menu appears as expected. I get the same behavior if I instead open the source .xls file - it all works. I've also tried saving to a .xlam file instead of .xla, but get the same bad result. Any ideas?

• How to fully use the 4G in my Laptop under Ubuntu 9.10 - 32-bit

  I have a Toshiba A100, which I upgraded to 4G of RAM. The hardware startup indeed shows 4G of RAM, and I recently installed Windows 7, just to see how it behaves on it. So far so good, it displays 4G of RAM. Not that I tried to use it all, but it displays it. Previously under XP, I also would see 4G of RAM. But under Ubuntu 9.10 (32 or 64 bits), it only displays 2.9 G of RAM. And my kernel is the "pae" compiled one, which is supposed to do the trick to work around the 32-bit CPU limitation. How can I get Ubuntu to fully use my 4G of RAM ?

  I'm trying to install Umbraco CMS on Windows 7 64-bit and I get the following exception: [HttpException (0x80004005): Could not load file or assembly 'ImageManipulation, Version=1.0.2105.41209, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission required. The application pool's trust mode is set to 'Full', all the user permissions are just as on other sites hosted on the same machine. I went through all relevant topics on Umbraco's forum, but all advices are about the trust level. How do I fix this?

  Hi All, Does anyone experience this problem of corrupted .WAR file after it has been copied over the network share ? this is .WAR file (Web Archive) the J2EE application file (.WAR file is compressed with the same zip algorithm i think ?) Scenario 1: Windows Server 2008 x64 transfer into Windows XP using RDP client (Local Devices and Resources) Scenario 2: Windows XP 32 bit transfer into Windows Server 2003 x64 using shared network drive (port 445 SMB ?) for both of the scenario it always failed / corrupted (the source code seems to be duplicated at the end of line when you open up in the Eclipse / Java IDE). but when in both scenario i compressed the file into .ZIP file everything is OK. can anyone explains why this problem happens ?   Hello, I created (and used) a Windows Media Encoder object in Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition on MS Server 2003 64 bit. This worked fine. However, when I attempted to create the equivalent Windows Media Encoder object using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 on MS Server 2003 64 bit, the following exception was thrown: "Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {632B606A-BBC6-11D2-A329-006097C4E476} failed due to the following error: 80040154." It cannot be that the component isn’t registered, because both have a reference to the same WMEncEng.dll file. The Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 code also worked fine on XP 32 bit. Could it be a problem with permissions? Regardless, anyone have any ideas why this problem is occurring and, more importantly, how to resolve it? Thank you. • Cost effective online consumer surveys / panels?

  I am building a Windows based software targeted at consumers, and while I think it's awesome, I'm not sure if my potential customers will. I would like to do some market research to make sure I'm on the right track with the feature set. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget for a large sample size. I understand that I won't be able to get anything near statistical significance on the cheap, but some feedback is better than no feedback I figure. Are there any inexpensive resources for surveying a panel of 100-200 consumers? Thanks!

• Allow image upload - most efficient way?

  Hey everyone, In my site, I currently only allow users to import images from other sites rather than uploading it themselves. The main reason for this is because I don't have much storage space on my host (relatively speaking). The host charges quite a bit for additional space. What are the alternatives to hosting images users upload (max 1mb size). Would it be a good idea to purchase separate cheap hosting with "unlimited space" (I know that's not true, but I'm guessing it's more than 1gb)? Or are there some caveats with this approach (e.g. security since the site should not be browsable, but accessed via another server)? Are there alternative ideas that I could employ?   Dear Devs I have a wcf service deployed on IIS with basicHttpBinding and aspNetCompatibilityEnabled=true I have a test client as well which invokes multiple service functions simultaneously. To check the performance of service call on client and server I calculated the Avg time it takes to complete a service request on client(in proxy code) and on server as well. after a test of 8 hrs (server and client were on the same machine) i came to know that average response time on client is around 34ms where as the Avg execution time on server is around 3ms so the difference is 31ms. I would like to know why every call is taking 31ms is it justified? and how can i reduce this?

• Cost of using repeated parameters

  I consider refactoring few method signatures that currently take parameter of type List or Set of concrete classes --List[Foo]-- to use repeated parameters instead: Foo*. This would allow me to use the same method name and overload it based on the parameter type. This was not possible using List or Set, because List[Foo] and List[Bar] have same type after erasure: List[Object]. In my case the refactored methods work fine with scala.Seq[Foo] that results from the repeated parameter. I would have to change all the invocations and add a sequence argument type annotation to all collection parameters: baz.doStuffWith(foos:_*). Given that switching from collection parameter to repeated parameter is semantically equivalent, does this change have some performance impact that I should be aware of? Is the answer same for scala 2.7._ and 2.8?

• HP Photosmart 7450 Prints Noise On Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  I have received a working (in its last location) HP Photosmart 7450 printer. I connected it up to my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit workstation, and the driver was (apparently) installed. The problem is that whenever I try to print from it -- test page, text from notepad, picture, whatever -- it spins through a half dozen sheets of paper, some of which have fractions of text on them, but most of which are either blank or have line noise printed on them. Noise similar to what was printed out on ye olde laserjet printers when the postscript interpreter failed. HP's web site only has a "use the included driver in Windows 7, be happy" instruction. The driver has been removed and added several times. The printer was previously attached to a XP Home computer and worked correctly without incident. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting before I drop this printer in the river?

• File and Printer Sharing Port issue in Windows 7 64 bit

  So, This is totally weird and I could not find any way to fix it. In simple words after the diagnosis this what is happening. On a windows 7 64 bit box, Whenever I am trying to access a server using file share. It is trying to connect to port 80 http on the place of 445. I observed that using WireShark. Telnet to 445 works. Any clue how to fix this. Scanned the machine using Malware bytes, Symantec and MS live essentials . I dont want to recreate the whole machine again. Please help me here. Regards Mohit Thakral

  edit: I was trying to solve a spoj problem. I have already implemented the solution using a segment tree. I have read about BIT but i can't figure out how to do a particular thing with it(which i have mentioned below) I am trying to check if brackets are balanced in a given string containing only ('s or )'s. I am using a BIT(Binary indexed tree) for solving the problem. The procedure i am following is as follows: I am taking an array of size equal to the number of characters in the string. I am assigning -1 for ) and 1 for ( to the corresponding array elements. Brackets are balanced in the string only if the following two conditions are true. The cumulative sum of the whole array is zero. Minimum cumulative sum is non negative. i.e the minimum of cumulative sums of all the prefixes of the array is non-negative. Checking condition 1 using a BIT is trivial. I am facing problem in checking condition 2.

  I'm building an application which will have dynamic allocated objects of type A each with a dynamically allocated member (v) similar to the below class class A { int a; int b; int* v; }; where: The memory for v will be allocated in the constructor. v will be allocated once when an object of type A is created and will never need to be resized. The size of v will vary across all instances of A. The application will potentially have a huge number of such objects and mostly need to stream a large number of these objects through the CPU but only need to perform very simple computations on the members variables. Could having v dynamically allocated could mean that an instance of A and its member v are not located together in memory? What tools and techniques can be used to test if this fragmentation is a performance bottleneck? If such fragmentation is a performance issue, are there any techniques that could allow A and v to allocated in a continuous region of memory? Or are there any techniques to aid memory access such as pre-fetching scheme? for example get an object of type A operate on the other member variables whilst pre-fetching v. If the size of v or an acceptable maximum size could be known at compile time would replacing v with a fixed sized array like int v[max_length] lead to better performance? The target platforms are standard desktop machines with x86/AMD64 processors, Windows or Linux OSes and compiled using either GCC or MSVC compilers.

  I am thinking of setting up my own freelance business but coming from a workplace that offers a particular service to huge clients, I do not know what are the current charges for websites are nowadays. I know that as technology just keeps changing and changing (most of the time, for the better...), the amount you charge for a single website is constantly differing. Like for example, I don't think static websites (with just static html pages) are that expensive today, no? (as i said, I might be mistaken since I haven't really touched on this freelance industry yet) So, freelance web-developers out there, can you give me estimates on how much you charge for your clients? Some examples of websites that I want to know an approx charge: ~10 static html pages ~10 dhtml pages (with maybe a flasy menu on the top/side) Database driven websites with a standard CMS (be it the one you developed, or an existing one) Database driven but with a custom-built cms for the particular client Using an existing template for a design Starting the design from scratch etc... I know that the normally clients don't really care about the technologies used to construct their websites, but do you charge differently according to which technology you use to build the website with?; as in, is the technology a factor when setting the price? ...being ASP.Net, PHP, Ruby On Rails etc... Also, how do you go on about charging your clients for your services? What are the major factors that you consider when setting a price tag for a website to a client ? And better yet, how do you even find prospective clients? <= [or should I leave this question for a different post?] Btw, in your post, also mention some numbers (in cash values, be it in USD, GBP, EUR or anything) because I want to be able to take calculate some averages from this post when some answers stack up
