    It seems to me that the most common overly ambitious project that programmers (esp. Comp. Sci. grads) try to tackle is building your own operating system. (Trying to create your own programming language + compiler is probably even more common but not nearly as ambitious.) For those (like myself) foolish enough to try: aside from the sheer size, what are the biggest *gotcha*s or unexpected roadblocks you've encountered in trying to create your own OS from the ground up?   • Dynamically creating GWT screens using Metadata?

    I have an AWT applet application that needs to be ported over to GWT. The applet screens are described in meta data and the applet renders each screen dynamically using reflection. We'd like the same thing in GWT/ExtGWT. I've built a working version of this ExtJS whereby the metadata is turned into ExtJS Screen configs in the form of JSON. The drawback with this approach is the "wiring" of controls to data needs to be written in Javascript. GWT is preferred since it'd be all Java code, no JS. Upon digging in it's possible to render the screens using GWT off the metadata using GWT.create(). The problem I'm having is the wiring to hook a dynamically created button for example to an event handler requires reflection which is not supported in GWT. Is this conclusion correct? and if so, are there any other ways to achieve this type of dynamic UI using ExtGWT?

  • Creating an Excel 2007 bubble chart with date values in axis

    I'm trying to create a graph showing the duration of issue resolution. I believe a bubble chart in excel will show what I want but I can't manage to get it working correctly. For each date I have a number of days (duration) and a number of issues (magnitude). Most dates have a duration of 1 with a large magnitude, and I want to avoid the outliers dominating the chart. e.g. 1-Feb, 1, 15 1-Feb, 2, 10 1-Feb, 9, 1 2-Feb, 1, 11 2-Feb, 2, 14 2-Feb, 6, 2 2-Feb, 18, 1 etc. I want the data in this example to give me 2 columns of bubbles. When I try to get excel to create the chart I can't get the date to appear at on the x axis; I get a count (representing the row of the data) instead, and as each row is a separate column, the values don't line up for the date. Can this be done in Excel 2007 without using VBA?

    I have two projects in my Solution. One implements my business logic and has defined entity model of entity framework. When I want to work with classes defined within this project from another project I have some problems in runtime. Actually, the most concerning thing is why I can not instantiate my, so called, TicketEntities(ObjectContext) object from other projects? when I catch following exception: The specified named connection is either not found in the configuration, not intended to be used with the EntityClient provider, or not valid. I found out it's brake at: public partial class TicketEntities : global::System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext { public TicketEntities() : base("name=TicketEntities", "TicketEntities") { this.OnContextCreated(); } with exception: Unable to load the specified metadata resource. Just to remind you everthing works fine from orginal project.

  • Creating a WCF ServiceHost object takes three to four minutes on some PCs

    Hello, I have created a WCF service which does not use the app.config to configure itself. However, it takes three to four minutes on some PCs to construct the ServiceHost object. Thinking there was something wrong with my service, I constructed a simple Hello, World service and tried it with that. I have the same issue. According to the profiler, all this time is spent reading in configuration for the service. So I have two questions really. Is it possible to disable reading config from the XML? More importantly, does anyone have any idea why this might be taking such an inordinate amount of time?     A decompression API that I am using has the following API: Decode(Stream inStream,Stream outStream) I'd like to create a wrapper around this API, such that I can create my own Stream class which offers up the decoded data. Stream decodedStream=new BlaDecodeStream(inStream); So that I can than use this stream as a parameter to the XmlReader constructor in the same way one might use the System.IO.Compression.GZipStream. As far as I can tell, the only other option is set outStream stream to a MemoryStream or to a FileStream and go in two hops. The files I am dealing with are enormous, so neither of these options are particularly attractive. Before I go reinventing the wheel, is there any prior art that I might be able to draw from, or something in the BCL I might have missed? The CircularStream implementation here would go some of the way to helping, but I'm really looking for something similar that would block (as opposed to over/underrun) when the Stream's internal buffer is 'empty' when reading from it and block when the internal buffer is full when writing to it. In this way it could serve as parameter outStream and simultaneously (i.e. from another thread) could be read from by the XmlReader.

    I have an Organization model that has_many users through affiliations. And, in the form of the organization ( the standard edit ) I use semanting_form_for and semantic_fields_for to display the organization fields and affiliations fields. But I wish to create a separete form just to handle the affiliations of a specific organization. I was trying to go to the Organization controller and create a an edit_team and update_team methods then on the routes create those pages, but it's getting a mess and not working. am I on the right track?

Does anyone know of another script or even a better way in general to generate PDF files? The reason why I am converting HTML to PDF is because I want someone to use a WYSIWYG editor to create the contents and click save to generate their PDF file...   • Programmatically creating vector arrows in KML

    Does anyone have any practical examples of programmatically drawing icons as vectors in KML? Specifically, I have data with a magnitude and an azimuth at given coordinates, and I would like to have icons (or another graphical element) generated based on these values. Some thoughts on how I might approach it: Image directory (a brute force way): Make an image director of 360 different image files (probably batch rotate a single image) each pointing in a cooresponding azimuth. I've seen things like "Excel to KML," but am looking for code that I can use within a program, rather than a web utility. Issue: Arrow does not contain magnitude context, so that would have to be a label. I'd rather dynamically lengthen the arrow. Line creation in KML: Perhaps create a formula that creates a line with the origin at the coordinate points, with the length of the line proportional to the magnitute, and angled according to azimuth. There would then be two more lines, perhaps 30 degrees or so extending from the end of the previous line to make the arrow head. Issues: Not a separate image icon, so not sure how it would work in KML. Also not sure how easy it would be to generate this algorithm. Separate image generation: Perhaps create a PHP file that uses imagemagick or something similar to dynamically generate a .png file in a similar method to the above, and then link to the icon using the URI "domain.tld/imagegen.php?magnitude=magvalue&azimuth=azmvalue". Issue: Still have the problem of actually writing the algorithm for image generation. So, the question: has anyone else come up with solutions for programmatic vector (rather than merely arrow) generation?

    I'm playing around with MongoMapper but I'm having trouble figuring out how to create a form for an object that has embedded documents. With ActiveRecord, I'd use fields_for but when asked if this would be supported a few months ago, MongoMapper author John Nunemaker wrote: "Nope and nope. It is really [not] that hard with attr_accessor's." OK, fair enough, but how do you write the form for this to work? I'm not interested in using the nested form implementations that are out there because I want to do this the "normal" way as I'm learning about MongoMapper. My model is simple enough - I've got a Person with embedded documents for email addresses, phone numbers, etc. I do not care about updating existing embedded documents. They can be re-created from the form input each time a Person is edited.

    I have an adjacency list of objects (rows loaded from SQL database with the key and it's parent key) that I need to use to build an unordered tree. It's guaranteed to not have cycles. This is taking wayyy too long (processed only ~3K out of 870K nodes in about 5 minutes). Running on my workstation Core 2 Duo with plenty of RAM.   • Creating Signed URLs for Amazon CloudFront

    Short version: How do I make signed URLs "on-demand" to mimic Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect behavior (i.e. protecting downloads) with Amazon CloudFront/S3 using Python. I've got a Django server up and running with an Nginx front-end. I've been getting hammered with requests to it and recently had to install it as a Tornado WSGI application to prevent it from crashing in FastCGI mode. Now I'm having an issue with my server getting bogged down (i.e. most of its bandwidth is being used up) due to too many requests for media being made to it, I've been looking into CDNs and I believe Amazon CloudFront/S3 would be the proper solution for me. I've been using Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect header to protect the files from unauthorized downloading, but I don't have that ability with CloudFront/S3--however they do offer signed URLs. I'm no Python expert by far and definitely don't know how to create a Signed URL properly, so I was hoping someone would have a link for how to make these URLs "on-demand" or would be willing to explain how to here, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, is this the proper solution, even? I'm not too familiar with CDNs, is there a CDN that would be better suited for this?

  • Izpack: Creating custom panels

    Hi, I am trying to create a custom panel for an IzPack installer. This means that I have to extend IzPanel. However, it appears that if I do this, the extended panel needs to be in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. Then I found this post, which stipulates that: As such, you must include installer.jar from the lib folder of IzPack in the build path of your custom panel project. Your custom panel /must/ extend com.izforge.izpack.installer.IzPanel. Furthermore, it /must/ reside in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. On top of it all, your build jar's name /must/ be the same as the unqualified name of your custom panel class. I take issue with the 1st and 4th points. They imply that I have to create an additional JAR file for each custom IzPanel that I create. Also, I would have to modify the IzPack installation by adding these JARs to one of its subdirectories. Is this article outdated (2008) and can it be safely ignored, or is this still true? If not how can I avoid this and simply have the extended IzPanel on the classpath instead? Thank you!

    Ok, I'm probably going to feel quite dumb when someone answers this one with a simple thing that I'm missing but... here goes: I've got a brand new app on rails 3 beta and I'm using devise for the authentication. I've run all the comments and everything is working perfectly at the moment. I've created a user role and an admin role (following these instructions: http://wiki.github.com/plataformatec/devise/adding-an-admin-role) and I've registered myself as the first user but how to do I register or create an admin role user? The directions from the devise guys setup the admin role to not be registerable but I'm unsure how you're supposed to create the admin if you can't register?! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
