• From Java to Javascript? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Are there any OO-principles that are practically applicable for Javascript? 2 answers I am primarily a Java programmer. Because of its OO principles and the general paradigm of Java programming, like wrapping things in static variables, and having things return specific types, heavily aids me in "visualizing" a program. Instead of thinking of a big program, I can, instead, focus on smaller organized parts of my eventual program, and add functionality and build up from there. Thus, I have trouble programming in other languages. Or at least, I have not been able to program in the same ability as I do in Java compared to other languages. I know Javascript has OO principles, so I'd like to learn this language in a OO-based like I would program with Java. Is this possible?

• Copy Ubuntu distro with all settings from one computer to a different one

  I'd like to copy my exact setup from my computer at work to my computer at home. I'm trying to figure out how to go about doing that. So far I've figured this much out. On the source computer run dpkg --get-selections > installed-software and backup the installed-software file Backup /etc/apt/sources.list Backup /usr/share/applications/ to save all my custom Quicklists Backup /etc/fstab to save all my network mounts Backup /usr/share/themes/ to save the customization I've done to my themes I'm also going to backup my entire HOME directory. Once I get to the destination computer I'm going to first do just a fresh install of 11.10 Then I'll copy over my HOME directory, /etc/apt/sources.list, /usr/share/appications, /etc/fstab and /usr/share/themes/ Then I'm going to run dpkg --set-selections < installed-software Followed by dselect That should install all of my apps for me. I'm wondering if there's a way/need to backup dconf and gconf settings from the source computer? I guess that's my ultimate question. I'd also like any notes on anything else that might need backed up as well before I undertake this project. I hope this post is legit, I figured other people would be interested in knowing this process and I don't see any other questions that seem to really document this on here. I'd also like to further this project and have each computer routinely backup all the necessary files so that both computer are basically identical at all times. That's stage 2 though...

• Windows 7 RDP Problem - connecting to external zone with computer names

  I recently installed Windows 7, all is well so far, apart from using RDP to access computers outside my domain. We use a datacenter, outside of our domain. I was using Windows Vista before (not sure if this is relevant) - I could RDP no problem to the machines (using their machine names - Web10 for example) I have changed my IP address to be the same as it was when i was using vista We use a draytek firewall - we use DMZ Host to map my IP to an external ip- which is allowed to access the datacenter I've disabled windows firewall When i try to connect in Remote Desktop client, using Web10, I can't connect, however, if I enter the actual IP address, i can. I have run out of ideas... any help is appreciated!

• Strategy for avoiding duplicate object ids for data shared across devices using iCloud

  I have a data intensive iOS app that is not using CoreData nor does it support iCloud synching (yet). All of my objects are created with unique keys. I use a simple long long initialized with the current time. Then as I need a new key I increment the value by 1. This has all worked well for a few years with the app running isolated on a single device. Now I want to add support for automatic data sync across devices using iCloud. As my app is written, there is the possibility that two objects created on two different devices could end up with the same key. I need to avoid this possibility. I'm looking for ideas for solving this issue. I have a few requirements that the solution must meet: 1) The key needs to remain a single integral data type. Converting all existing keys to a compound key or to a string or other type would affect the entire code base and likely result in more bugs than it's worth. 2) The solution can't depend on an Internet connection. A user must be able to run the app and add data even with no Internet connection. The data should still resolve properly later when the data syncs through iCloud once a connection is available. I'll accept one exception to this rule. If no other option is available, I may be open to requiring an Internet connection the first time the app's data is initialized. One idea I have been toying around with in my head is logically splitting the integer key into two parts. The high 4 or 5 bits could be used as some sort of device id while the rest represents the actual key. The fuzzy part is figuring out how to come up with non-conflicting device ids that fit in a few bits. This should be viable since I don't need to deal will millions of devices. I just need to deal with the few devices that would be shared by a given iCloud account. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)

However this data (mostly long pieces of text) is also published on the official governmental site (without the added value of summaries). Should I worry about google ranking due to this duplication? What is the preferred way to point to the official source of the information? There is no advertisement on my site. My site is ".com". The governmental site is ".bg".

• Routing / binding 128 to one server

  I have a Ubuntu server with 128 ip's (static external ips 86.xx.xx.16), and I want to crawl pages thru different ip's. The gateway is xx.xxx.xxx.1, the main ip is xx.xxx.xxx.16, and the other 128 ip's are xx.xxx.xxx.129/255. I tried this configuration in /etc/network/interfaces but I doesn't work. It work if I remove the gateway for the aliases eth0:0 and eth0:1. Recently I've been having some problems with my eyes, so I went to talk to several doctors, which all gave me different recommendations as to how bright the background of the room should be in comparison to the display's brightness. It was very confusing, as some of them even agreed with counter-arguments of others, which made it all even less clear. So I'd like to ask the professional programmers, as people who actually have some experience with that. Some of the doctors said that looking at a monitor is like looking at a book, so the brightness ratios should be approximately the same. Others said that background should be as bright as the display itself, because then there is no brightness difference at the edges, and that's what may cause eye fatigue. From my own experience, I can say that reading a book isn't the same as writing or debugging a program, where you have to pay close attention to each symbol, and in books most words are easily recognizable without focusing too hard on them. Also, books are black on white and I myself use the default (dark text, white bg) color scheme for my IDE, but I've seen some programmers use mid-bright text on very dark background color schemes. So I'd like to ask what are the recommended display/background brightness ratios for programming? I'm not sure this site is the right one for this kind of questions, so if you know a better one, please comment.
