• Gettingn Started with Facebook API

  I have a friend that owns a small business and has a Page on Facebook. I want to help her manage it from a marketing perspective, and figure that it may be best to do so through their API. I have skimmed their API documentation, and have a basic working knowledge of Python. What I can't figure out is if I can access their page's data with Python and grab the data on wall posts, who liked posts, etc. Is this possible? I can't find a decent tutorial for someone who is new to programming. To provide context, I have been scraping the Twitter Search API for some time now and I am hoping there is something similar (request certain data elements, and have it returned as structured data I can analyze). I find their API extremely straight forward, and for Facebook, I don't know where to begin. I don't want to create an application, I simply want to access the data that is related to my friend's page. I am hoping to find some decent tutorials and help on what I will need to get started. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

• Vector deltas and moving in unknown areas

  Hi All, I was in need of a little math help that I can't seem to find the answer to, any links to documentation would be greatly appreciated. Heres my situation, I have no idea where I am in this maze, but I need to move around and find my way back to the start. I was thinking of implementing a waypoint list of places i've been offset from my start at 0,0. This is a 2D cartesian plane. I've been given 2 properties, my translation speed from 0-1 and my rotation speed from -1 to 1. -1 is very left and +1 is very right. These are speed and not angles so thats where my problem lies. If I'm given 0 as a translation speed and 0.2 I will continually turn to my right at a slow speed. How do I figure out the offsets given these 2 variables? I can store it every time I take a 'step'. I just need to figure out the offsets in x and y terms given the translations and rotation speeds. And the rotation to get to those points. Any help is appreciated.

• Pure CSS3 show/hide full height div with transition

  Dear Stackoverflow readers, I've been breaking my head over something I've seen at Tympanus, and I can't figure out how to properly do such a thing. In this link: http://tympanus.net/Tutorials/FullscreenBookBlock/ you can see that the menu is completely hidden, and only visible when you click on an icon. It has a lovely transition, and it basically roughly sums up what I'm trying to accomplish. The only difference with the above example is that I don't want to completely hide this full-height element, and I'd like to accomplish the above effect with a hover instead of having to click a button. So in an ideal world you'd see a vertical bar, and when you hover over that bar (or click on it with your finger if you're on a tablet), it "opens up" and shows you the full content inside the opened div. Now, I can make a decent bit in html5 and css3, but the above explained effect that I'm trying to accomplish has given me serious headaches, hehe. Does anyone happen to know a tutorial I might have missed that does this exact thing? p.s.: I have tried to take apart Tympanus' html/css, but with the page-fold effect that's also implemented in it I can't seem to figure it out, hence my hope for someone here to help me on my way :)

• Jquery passing an HTML element into a function

  I have an HTML form where I am going to copy values from a series of input fields to some spans/headings as the user populates the input fields. I am able to get this working using the following code: $('#source').keyup(function(){ if($("#source").val().length == 0){ $("#destinationTitle").text('Sample Title'); }else{ $("#destinationTitle").text($("#source").val()); } }); In the above scenario the html is something like: Sample Title Basically, as the users fills out the source box, the text of the is changed to the value of the source input. If nothing is input in, or the user deletes the values typed into the box some default text is placed in the instead. Pretty straightforward. However, since I need to make this work for many different fields, it makes sense to turn this into a generic function and then bind that function to each 's onkeyup() event. But I am having some trouble with this. My implementation: function doStuff(source,target,defaultValue) { if($(source).val().length == 0){ $(target).text(defaultValue); }else{ $(target).text($(source).val()); } } which is called as follows: $('#source').keyup(function() { doStuff(this, '"#destinationTitle"', 'SampleTitle'); }); What I can't figure out is how to pass the second parameter, the name of the destination html element into the function. I have no problem passing in the element I'm binding to via "this", but can't figure out the destination element syntax. Any help would be appreciated - many thanks!

• jQuery .die isnt killing an attached event?

  Hi I've just started experimenting with .live and .die and having some great results but one thing isn't working. I've been tinkering with firebugs console to try out my written code live to see if i can figure out the reason why .die isn't killing off an attached event. First if i do this //attach ajax submission $('a[href$=edit]').live("click", function(event) { $.get($(this).attr("href"), null, null); return false; }); Then as expected when I click on a link the ajax fires off and my server side code injects a form for inline editing. But sometimes I want to disable this behaviour and also make the link unclickable so I do the following //unbind ajax form creation when we click on a link, then disable its semantic behaviour $('a[href$=edit]').die("click").click( function(){ return false; } ); which works but if then try to remove this and restore that ajax goodness with the code below it doesn't work, Instead the link remains unclickable. I cant figure out why? • How to convert a lambda to an std::function using templates

  Basically, what I want to be able to do is take a lambda with any number of any type of parameters and convert it to an std::function. I've tried the following and neither method works. std::function([](){});//Complains that std::function is missing template parameters template <typename T> void foo(function<T> f){} foo([](){});//Complains that it cannot find a matching candidate The following code does work however, but it is not what I want because it requires explicitly stating the template parameters which does not work for generic code. std::function<void()>([](){}); I've been mucking around with functions and templates all evening and I just can't figure this out, so any help would be much appreciated. As mentioned in a comment, the reason I'm trying to do this is because I'm trying to implement currying in C++ using variadic templates. Unfortunately, this fails horribly when using lambdas. For example, I can pass a standard function using a function pointer. template <typename R, typename...A> void foo(R (*f)(A...)) {} void bar() {} int main() { foo(bar); } However, I can't figure out how to pass a lambda to such a variadic function. • Jquery.Validate plugin + realPerson plugin

  I can't figure out how to make it so the form wont fire unless the realPerson captcha is "valid". I can see that when the user types in the correct/valid letters and clicks submit it adds a class of "valid" to the input. • Performance of stored proc when updating columns selectively based on parameters?

  I'm trying to figure out if this is relatively well-performing T-SQL (this is SQL Server 2008). I need to create a stored procedure that updates a table. The proc accepts as many parameters as there are columns in the table, and with the exception of the PK column, they all default to NULL. The body of the procedure looks like this: CREATE PROCEDURE proc_repo_update @object_id bigint ,@object_name varchar(50) = NULL ,@object_type char(2) = NULL ,@object_weight int = NULL ,@owner_id int = NULL -- ...etc AS BEGIN update object_repo set object_name = ISNULL(@object_name, object_name) ,object_type = ISNULL(@object_type, object_type) ,object_weight = ISNULL(@object_weight, object_weight) ,owner_id = ISNULL(@owner_id, owner_id) -- ...etc where object_id = @object_id return @@ROWCOUNT END So basically: Update a column only if its corresponding parameter was provided, and leave the rest alone. This works well enough, but as the ISNULL call will return the value of the column if the received parameter was null, will SQL Server optimize this somehow? This might be a performance bottleneck on the application where the table might be updated heavily (insertion will be uncommon so the performance there is not a problem). So I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to do this. Is there a way to condition the column expressions with something like CASE WHEN or something? The table will be indexed up the wazoo as well for read performance. Is this the best approach? My alternative at this point is to create the UPDATE expression in code (e.g. inline SQL) and execute it against the server. This would solve my doubts about performance, but I'd rather leave this in a stored proc if possible.

  I've got a simple class, and another class that has a property that points to the first class: #include <iostream> #include <vector> using namespace std; class first{ public: int var1; }; class second{ public: first* classvar; }; Then, i've got a void that's supposed to point "classvar" to the intended iteration of the class "first". void fill(vector<second>& sec, vector<first>& fir){ sec[0].classvar = &fir[0]; } Finally the main(). Create and fill a vector of class "first", create "second" vector, and run the fill function. int main(){ vector<first> a(1); a[0].var1 = 1000; vector<second> b(1); fill(b, a); cout << b[0].classvar.var1 << '\n'; system("PAUSE"); return 0; } This gives me the following error: 1>c:\...\main.cpp(29) : error C2228: left of '.var1' must have class/struct/union 1> type is 'first *' And I can't figure out why it reads the "classvar" as the whole vector instead of just the single instance. Should I do this cout << b[0].classvar[0].var1 << '\n'; it reads perfectly. Can anyone figure out the problem? Thanks in advance

• In Excel 2010, how can I show a count of occurrences on a specific date within multiple time ranges?

  Here's what I'm trying to do. I have three columns of data. ID, Date(MM/DD/YY), Time(00:00). I need to create a chart or table that shows the number of occurrences on, say, 12/10/2010 between 00:00 and 00:59, 1:00 and 1:59, etc, for each hour of the day. I can do countif and get results for the date, but I cannot figure out how to show a summary of the count of occurrences per hour for the 24 hour period. I have months of data and many times each day. Example of data set is below. Any help is greatly ID Date Time 221 12/10/2010 00:01 223 12/10/2010 00:45 227 12/10/2010 01:13 334 12/11/2010 14:45 I would like the results to read: Date Time Count 12/10/2010 00:00AM - 00:59AM 2 12/10/2010 01:00AM - 01:59AM 1 12/10/2010 02:00AM - 02:59AM 0 ......(continues for every hour of the day) 12/11/2010 00:00AM - 00:59AM 0 ......... 12/11/2010 14:00PM - 14:59PM 1 And so on. Sorry for the length but I wanted to be clear. EDIT Here is a sample spreadsheet. Very little data, but I couldn't figure out a better way without having a huge file. Tested in notepad for formatting and worked ok on import as csv. • Convert a binary tree to linked list, breadth first, constant storage/destructive

  This is not homework, and I don't need to answer it, but now I have become obsessed :) The problem is: Design an algorithm to destructively flatten a binary tree to a linked list, breadth-first. Okay, easy enough. Just build a queue, and do what you have to. That was the warm-up. Now, implement it with constant storage (recursion, if you can figure out an answer using it, is logarithmic storage, not constant). I found a solution to this problem on the Internet about a year back, but now I've forgotten it, and I want to know :) The trick, as far as I remember, involved using the tree to implement the queue, taking advantage of the destructive nature of the algorithm. When you are linking the list, you are also pushing an item into the queue. Each time I try to solve this, I lose nodes (such as each time I link the next node/add to the queue), I require extra storage, or I can't figure out the convoluted method I need to get back to a node that has the pointer I need. Even the link to that original article/post would be useful to me :) Google is giving me no joy. Edit: Jérémie pointed out that there is a fairly simple (and well known answer) if you have a parent pointer. While I now think he is correct about the original solution containing a parent pointer, I really wanted to solve the problem without it :) The refined requirements use this definition for the node: struct tree_node { int value; tree_node* left; tree_node* right; };

• How to parse mathematical expressions involving parentheses

  Please forgive my title, I really don't know how to phrase it better. This isn't a school assignment or anything, but I realize it's a mostly academic question. But, what I've been struggling to do is parse 'math' text and come up with an answer. For Example - I can figure out how to parse '5 + 5' or '3 * 5' - but I fail when I try to correctly chain operations together. (5 + 5) * 3 It's mostly just bugging me that I can't figure it out. If anyone can point me in a direction, I'd really appreciate it. EDIT Thanks for all of the quick responses. I'm sorry I didn't do a better job of explaining. First - I'm not using regular expressions. I also know there are already libraries available that will take, as a string, a mathematical expression and return the correct value. So, I'm mostly looking at this because, sadly, I don't "get it". Second - What I've tried doing (is probably misguided) but I was counting '(' and ')' and evaluating the deepest items first. In simple examples, this worked; but my code is not pretty and more complicated stuff crashes. When I 'calculated' the lowest level, I was modifying the string. So... (5 + 5) * 3 Would turn into 10 * 3 Which would then evaluate to 30 But it just felt 'wrong'. I hope that helps clarify things. I'll certainly check out the links provided.

My coworker prefers _ There is some debate if using m_ or _ should be used at all, as it is like Hungarian notation. Private class fields are capitalized. The part I am trying to figure out is what do I do if when the Class name of a private field matches the private field name. For example, private Class2 Class2; This is confusing. If the private field name is not the same class, for example private string Name; , there isn't much issue. Or am I thinking about the issue wrong. Should my classes and private fields be named in such a way that they don't collide?

  Hi! I'm working on a little fitness tracker in order to teach myself Django. I want to graph my weight over time, so I've decided to use the Python Google Charts Wrapper. Google charts require that you convert your date into a x coordinate. To do this I want to take the number of days in my dataset by subtracting the first weigh-in from the last weigh-in and then using that to figure out the x coords (for example, I could 100 by the result and increment the x coord by the resulting number for each y coord.) Anyway, I need to figure out how to subtract Django datetime objects from one another and so far, I am striking out on both google and here at the stack. I know PHP, but have never gotten a handle on OO programming, so please excuse my ignorance.   I just installed macvim yesterday and I installed vim latex today. One of the menu items is calling a broken fuction (TeX-Suite -> view). When I click on the menu-time it makes this call: :silent! call Tex_ViewLatex() Question: Where can I find that function? Is there some way to figure out where it is defined?   I'm working on a ruby baser lexer. To improve performance, I joined up all tokens' regexps into one big regexp with match group names. I could not find any option other than iterating over #names: m.names.each do |n| if m[n] type = n.to_sym resolved_type = (n.start_with?('__anonymous_') ? nil : type) val = m[n] break end end which verifies that the match group did have a match. The problem here is that it's slow (I spend about 10% of time in the loop; also 8% grabbing the @input[@pos..-1] to make sure that \A works as expected to match start of string (I do not discard input, just shift the @pos in it). You can check the full code at GH repo. Any ideas on how to make it at least a bit faster? Is there any option to figure the "successful" match group easier?

  In C#, i want to show the first week in a calendar (in a html table) and i am trying to figure out the most elegant algorithm to generate the right days. If the first day of the week is not Sunday, i want to show the days of preceding month (like you would see on a regular calendar). So, as an input you have a current month. In this case May. I see it has a dayofweek property on a date. i am generating this table in C# on my server to pass down to a html page.

• php weird bug where an array is not an array !

  I've been going mad trying to figure out why an array would not be an array in php. For a reason I can't understand I have a bug in a smarty class. The code is this : $compiled_tags = array(); for ($i = 0, $for_max = count($template_tags); $i < $for_max; $i++) { $this->_current_line_no += substr_count($text_blocks[$i], "\n"); // I tried array push instead to see // bug is here array_push($compiled_tags,$this->_compile_tag($template_tags[$i])); //$compiled_tags[] = $this->_compile_tag($template_tags[$i]); $this->_current_line_no += substr_count($template_tags[$i], "\n"); } the error message is Warning: array_push() expects parameter 1 to be array, integer given in .... OR before with [] Warning: Cannot use a scalar value as an array in .... I trying a var_debug on $compiled_tags and as soon I enter the for loop is not an array anymore but an integer. I tried renaming the variable, but same problem. I'm sure is something simple that I missed but I can't figure it out. Any help is (as always) welcomed !

• jQuery trigger function on change

  I have the following two slider functions which work well and display like so: I have diskAmount and transferAmount stored in global vars, however what I am now trying to figure out is how do I get the sum of the two to initially show as the monthly fee, and then update when either of the two sliders are changed. So in my screenshot above the initial state will be $24.75, and the fee will update if the sliders change. Can anyone point me in the right direction?   I have done a lot of searching to what appears to be a simple LINQ problem but I can't figure out how to do grab an object out of a collection that has a specified minimum (or max value) without resorting to a sort like this: > dim customers= GetCustomers() > > dim youngest = (From c in customers > Order By c.age Ascending).ToList.First This (untested code) structure works fine with the exception that the entire customer array must be sorted and placed into a list for the only purpose of extracting the first value. That can't be the best way to get the minimum! Note that I want the whole c record in this case, not the minumum age of a customer that can be done like this (a typical example): > dim customers= GetCustomers() > > dim youngest = (From c in customers > Select c.age).Min Or even > dim customers= GetCustomers() > > dim youngest = (From c in customers > Select c).Min(Function(x) x.age) I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the whole object (or even the index) without resorting to the sort...

• Cannot connect to mysql via servlet

  Hi all I have been since 2 days trying to figure out why my servlet does not connect to the database MySql. I have mysql installed and working properly and eclipse. On a normal application which does not run on the server the Exception isn't thrown and the connection (in the exact same way) its successfull. Do you have any advice?

• Rails - HABTM Relationship -- How Can I Find A Record Based On An Attribute Of The Associated Model

  I have setup this HABTM relationship in the past and its worked before....Now it isnt and I'm at my wits end trying to figure out whats wrong. I've looking through the rails guides all day and cant seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong, so help would really be appreciated. I have 2 models connected through a join model and I'm trying to find records based an attribute of the associated model. Event.rb has_and_belongs_to_many :interests Interest.rb has_and_belongs_to_many :events and a join table migration that was created like create_table 'events_interests', :id => false do |t| t.column :event_id, :integer t.column :interest_id, :integer end I tried @events = Event.all(:include => :interest, :conditions => [" interest.id = ?", 4 ] ) But got the error "Association named 'interest' was not found; perhaps you misspelled it?"... which I didnt of course I tried @events = Event.interests.find(:all, :conditions => [" interest.id = ?", 4 ] ) but got the error "undefined method `interests' for #Class:0x4383348" How can I find the Events that have an interest id of 4....I'm definitely going bald from this lol

• Can anyone explain this impossible bit of PHP logic?

  I'm attempting to debug a simple PHP script. Essentially, there's a variable which is defined with: $variable = ($_GET['variable'] == 'true') ? TRUE : FALSE; Then, in the view file, the following code is meant to display a box if $variable == TRUE: <? if ($variable == true) { ?> <p class="box">You have imported a new plan.</p> <? } ?> Now, even when that $variable, as shown by var_dump($variable); == FALSE, that HTML is printed between the if { } tags. To me, this defies logic. I simply can't figure out this problem out. Furthermore, this code works fine on many PHP4 and PHP5 installations except for one particular server running PHP5.2. Any possible suggestions? Leads? I'm pulling out my hair trying to figure this one out. Thank you.

  I am working on a homework problem, I'm close but need some help with a data conversion I think. Or sysdate - start_date calculation The question is: Using the EX schema, write a SELECT statement that retrieves the date_id and start_date from the Date_Sample table (format below), followed by a column named Years_and_Months_Since_Start that uses an interval function to retrieve the number of years and months that have elapsed between the start_date and the sysdate. (Your values will vary based on the date you do this lab.) Display only the records with start dates having the month and day equal to Feb 28 (of any year). DATE_ID START_DATE YEARS_AND_MONTHS_SINCE_START 2 Sunday , February 28, 1999 13-8 4 Monday , February 28, 2005 7-8 5 Tuesday , February 28, 2006 6-8 Our EX schema that refers to this question is simply a Date_Sample Table with two columns: DATE_ID NUMBER NOT Null START_DATE DATE I Have written this code: SELECT date_id, TO_CHAR(start_date, 'Day, MONTH DD, YYYY') AS start_date , NUMTOYMINTERVAL((SYSDATE - start_date), 'YEAR') AS years_and_months_since_start FROM date_sample WHERE TO_CHAR(start_date, 'MM/DD') = '02/28'; But my Years and months since start column is not working properly. It's getting very high numbers for years and months when the date calculated is from 1999-ish. ie, it should be 13-8 and I'm getting 5027-2 so I know it's not correct. I used NUMTOYMINTERVAL, which should be correct, but don't think the sysdate-start_date is working. Data Type for start_date is simply date. I tried ROUND but maybe need some help to get it right. Something is wrong with my calculation and trying to figure out how to get the correct interval there. Not sure if I have provided enough information to everyone but I will let you know if I figure it out before you do. It's a question from Murach's Oracle and SQL/PL book, chapter 17 if anyone else is trying to learn that chapter. Page 559.
