  • Mac OS X multi-user thin client server (terminal server)?

    Is there any solution out there to turn a Mac into a true multi-user thin client server? I'd like to set up a few cheap PCs with access to a couple accounts using something like VNC, but it isn't economical to buy a new server for each user or a new license for virtualized OS X Server for each user. I'm fully aware that OS X Server lets you set up users with "network home folders," and I know there's also VNC built into Mac OS X.   • A good MP3/media player for Mac OS X?

    I've been trying to use iTunes now for about a year, and we just don't get on. So I tried instaling Windows Media Player for the Mac ... and there's no support for MP3s .. useless. I looked at Winamp, but this has to be run through wine or some other cocktail of programs. So this leads me to ask, are there a good (native) mp3 player for the Mac? I want something like Media Player on Windows or Winamp. I don't want something to re-organize my music directories, I have put the music in the directories they're in for a very good reason. Any suggestions?

  • Enable SMB file sharing on OS X - "Incorrect Password"

    I have a Mac running Snow Leopard connected to an Active Directory domain. I can share folders on the Mac and view files from Windows without problems. When I try to enable my Mac account for write access through System Preferences, I'm prompted for my account's password. Even though I'm entering the right one, I get an "Incorrect Password" response. The same process works fine for the local Mac administrator account; it's the Active Directory account I'm having problems with. I followed the advice on this page on apple.com without success: (I used the Mac to reset my domain password, and re-created my login keychain) If you want to use a user account that existed before you installed Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), you may need to reset the password for the account using Accounts preferences. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong? Until I fix this I can't write to my Mac file share from Windows.

  • JavaApplicationStub Compatibility with all java versions

    Hi, I am running a Java application on Mac Leopard & on Mac Mini. My Mac Mini upgraded, it is using Java Version 1.6.0_17 and Mac Leopard have version 1.5.0_13. To run that application on Mac Mini I have to copy JavaApplicationStub from path -"/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub" to my application "Content/Resources/Java". But this application successfully run on Mac Leopard. If I do not copy stub at Mac Mini then I am unable to launch application using app by double click, it shows icon for few second then disappears, so in that case I have to run application with its jar. I want that without copying explicitly JavaApplicationStub, how can I run app with all versions of java. If this possible then what changes I have to made? The info.plist file contain JVMVersion is 1.4+. Thanks!

    The PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Mac OS X Quick Start User Guide version 10.0 contains the following remarks: PGP Corporation deliberately takes a conservative stance when encrypting drives, to prevent loss of data. It is not uncommon to encounter Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors while encrypting a hard disk. If PGP WDE encounters a hard drive with bad sectors, PGP WDE will, by default, pause the encryption process. This pause allows you to remedy the problem before continuing with the encryption process, thus avoiding potential disk corruption and lost data. To avoid disruption during encryption, PGP Corporation recommends that you start with a healthy disk by correcting any disk errors prior to encrypting. and As a best practice, before you attempt to use PGP WDE, use a third-party scan disk utility that has the ability to perform a low-level integrity check and repair any inconsistencies with the drive that could lead to CRC errors. These software applications can correct errors that would otherwise disrupt encryption. The PGP WDE Windows user guide suggests SpinRite or Norton Disk Doctor. What recourse do I have on the Mac?

    My Linux laptop died yesterday and now I can't watch TV. Let me explain. I use a Roku Player to stream Netflix shows to my television; and a year or two ago, the Internet Service provided in my apartment complex added a Splash Page to get through the router and onto the net. After not too many days, I remembered that internet devices identify themselves with a MAC address. So I delved into the manpage of ifconfig and discovered that I could persuade my laptop to pretend to be the Roku Player, connect, click through the Splash Page, disconnect and change it back. This would allow the Roku to connect for about 24 hours, when I would have to do it again. But the laptop died yesterday during my smoke break. So during lunch, I ran to OfficeMax and got a new one. But I don't know where to begin looking for where to change the MAC address (assuming it's possible). I know I can try dual-boot, or a keychain OS, or possibly other things to resurrect my old method. But, is it possible to get Windows do it?

    What apps do you absolutely have to use a Mac to run, and there are no decent Windows PC equivalent? This is not a religious war. Please be specific and practical It doesn't have to be a direct 1-2-1 comparison, but overall usefulness to the task I'll start off with a few: KeyNote -- the animations are quite cool and not available in PowerPoint iTune's photo sync -- on Windows it makes copy of all the photos you want to sync, effectively double the space taken up by your photos. On a Mac it's easier as long as you use iPhoto Keychain -- a centralized password manager tied to the OS. The benefit of this is you don't have to set a Master Password (like Firefox) which you need to enter when starting the browser. And it doesn't reveal your password (like Chrome, which makes no effort in hiding the password you have stored in Options) Time Machine -- 0-configuration backup in the background. Easy interface for restoring a file, or even just a contact in the address book. Text-to-speech -- works in any program, and sounds better than Windows computer voice Quick View -- press space bar to preview a file. Windows95 had quick view, but was removed.

  • How to avoid Mercurial repo corruption when sharing a repository between Windows/Mac?

    I have several projects which are shared between Windows and Mac. The dev machine is a Mac running Parallels: the files are stored on the Mac side, and the source is shared to the Windows side. This is very convenient, as I can switch back and forth between Windows and Mac tools rapidly without having to sync files. Recently I switched from Subversion to Mercurial, and now I'm having problems with the Mercurial repository becoming corrupt if I use the Windows tools to add/update, etc. I have to be very careful about which operations on the Windows side are safe (mainly the read-only stuff) and of course I forget rather regularly. Does anybody know why the corruption occurs? I thought Mercurial repositories were platform-agnostic. Any ideas how to prevent it without removing the Windows tools entirely?

  • Sophos Enterprise Console 4.5, Mac Client 7 Not Auto-Populating SEC Info

    I have Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, which includes Sophos Enterprise Console (SEC). I'm currently running version 4.5 of SEC, which is an older version. I subscribe to Mac updates, and SEC generates a binary Mac installer for me to use on Mac endpoints (Version 7 for Mac, also an older version). However, when I run the installer on Mac endpoints, it installs fine but then never auto-fills out the location of the update server, which is on a network share, and the account credentials used to access it, which I do not know and were generated by Sophos automatically. Previously, I had been able to use the SEC-generated installer to install and run Sophos on a Mac seamlessly; the update location information and account credentials were automatically filled during login, I ran the installer and it was perfectly set up. Now, however, Sophos installs on a Mac but never updates because it doesn't have the update location OR credentials. Has anyone else run across this problem or know why it is happening?     Title says it all. I'm on Mac with the latest iTunes and it doesn't recognize my iPod anymore although it mounts to the desktop. I tried all and everything but it doesn't work (the iPod works on other Macs though, it itself is fine). How can I copy my music to the iPod without going through iTunes? Are there any tools like on Windows for this? Thanks!

Edit: The thinking is that I have one mac update itself using Software Update, and then somehow share the downloaded updates with other macs. For example, I have a mac pro and a mac mini on my local network. I'd like to download the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update only once, instead of having to download it separately for each mac.
