• Any idea of what to do with an old PC?

  I got an old PC for free, similar to that one. Additionlly, I'm a hobbyist programmer who does mainly python and java under a linux (mostly ubuntu) development environment. And now I wonder what I could do with such a piece of crappy hardware and would be pleased to get a good answer. It's one thing if you code your app that could run on almost any pc (or webbrowser) but another if you got an own hardware platform which you could extend or more generally customize the way you like. What I would like to hear from you: Are you in a similar situation? Have you already done a project like that? What would be your ideas?

• I have ubuntu 11.10 64bit, can't shutdown or restart my pc?

  I have ubuntu 11.10 64bit, everything worked fine but after i uninstalled the airtime dj app i can't restart or shutdown my pc !! The only way to reach at the screen showing that system is going to shutdown is via terminal but it stucks and never shuts down ! I can't even restart it ! I can suspend my pc fine but can't shutdown or restart it. Need to keep the power button pressed for a long time to shut it down ! Do i have to look for a shutdown script and find out what is happening ?? I'm very unhappy with this it gives to my nerves.

• Virtual PC in Remote Desktop session runs very slowly??

  I have a VPN to my work which is quite fast... I Remote Desktop to my work PC, which is running a Microsoft Virtual PC. Working with the PC while I'm actually at work isn't too bad, but when I try to interact with it over the remote desktop, it is VERY slow to respond. Even simple typing can be slow, but screen painting and response time is painfully obvious. Any suggestions to help speed it up?

• Is it possible to repair a Cisco 3500 XL (3548) switch with POST Error messages?

  I've got an old Cisco 3500 XL, and it seems to have hardware issues. I've loaded the latest IOS and cleared all config. Does anyone have any experience fixing the switch core? I'm a reasonably competent SMD solderer, can I replace/reflow some chips? I've checked the power supply voltages and it's all within tolerance, and no visible signs of any component damage. Some chips are hot to the touch. I understand that these were EOL as of 2007, but should have a lifetime warranty for the electronics. I don't have a Cisco support contract, so I can't file a ticket. What should I do? • Stop the screen saver and hibernation temporarily in VB.Net

  I have a very long running syncronization task that cannot be interrupted by the screen saver or aggressive power saving modes. I want to make a single api call to stop power save mode and then restore it once the task is done. The following code is peaced together from various other posts but it has no effect on XP's power management settings. What am I doing wrong? TIA! • Run Windows XP on a usb drive virtually on Windows XP?

  I am sick of not being able to run and install certain applications on my work computer due to admin restrictions (eg: Adobe AIR) . I have heard of smaller versions of Windows running on a usb thumb drive and have looked into it but can't find anything on running windows virtually from a usb drive. I would like to be able to login to this particular computer, insert my usb drive and then open up another version of windows installed on the thumb drive while still being able to use the windows I logged in on (literally be able to alt+tab between the main desktop and the virtual desktop from the usb drive). Is this even possible? For further clarification: The version of windows has to be Windows XP and there is no other option available for what I want to do. Looking forward to a response.

  I've written a few winform apps in .net 2.0 which won't run in a virtual XP (running from VirtualBox). I get the error "unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application" (.NET Framework Initialization Error). I've tried fixing the installation of .net and also installing v3.5. I think it's probably a security issue rather than a framework problem, but i'm running under an administrator account. Other .net apps (2.0) run ok, so it might be a strong name/signing problem. I've tried compiling them completely unsigned and also delay signing them with a key and turning on verification skipping with the sn tool. help greatly appreciated!

• Will a mulitouch touch screen equipped PC allow me to simulate real Android UI's without an Android device ?

  Hi, I have recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab as an Android 2.x testbed (I am aware that 2.3 might not run on it, but it appears to be a good 1.x - 2.x device with a large enough screen to approximate the variety of screens on different phones). I would wait for Honeycomb equipped devices (such as the Motorola XOOM mentioned at CES 2011), but these are slated for some time in Q1 (likely end of Q1 for the Canadian market). If I get a multitouch capable PC and install the Android SDK and simulator, will I be able to use the multitouch functionality of the PC with the simulator to approximate a real device ? Does anyone use a multitouch touch screen PC for Android development ? I assume that this would work as the PC would recognize my fingers like the mouse, but I'd like to find out before purchasing the PC. Thanks for your help, Scott

• How to shrink Windows 7 XP Mode VHD files?

  I'm trying to shrink a Windows 7 XP Mode VHD file with VhdResizer with little success. When I select my VHD file, it says "VhdExpand only supports fixed and dynamic VHD files". My XP Mode VHDs are dynamic files. Does anyone have any idea why it is failing? Failing that, does anyone have a process that I can use to shrink my XP mode VHD files on Windows 7 (64 bit)?

  I'm writing a tool called XP-More, which should help manage Windows 7 Virtual Machines. The first thing the tool has to do when launched is find the VM folder. However, turns out that folder is not listed as a Windows Special Folder. I use a workaround, but it's unreliable. Ideally, Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.VMFolder) or so would have done the job, but VMFolder is a fiction of my imagination. Is there any real way to get that folder?

I have two Windows desktops, and I would like to run OS X in VMWare rather than purchase Apple's expensive hardware. However, neither of my machines supports hardware-assisted virtualization, which is required to virtualize OS X. I went shopping online for a computer today, since I've been planning to purchase a laptop anyway, but sites like Best Buy don't appear to give any indication of whether or not a product supports this. Is there any other site out there or some trick to figuring this out other than buying the machine and running Microsoft's nifty little detection tool?

  Hi gurus, I am trying to call a telephone number fro my PC through my ip phone once my application completes its work. So I am searching for a way to access my ip phone from my PC. Please correct me if I am wrong or missing the obvious. On my PC in office selecting a phone in Microsoft office communicator and making calls from PC through my Cisco IP Phone is disabled. Is there any way i can programmatically call a external phone or mobile number from my PC as my ip phone is connected to my PC. I tried out etQuickDial and Make/Drop calls. But I am not able to find the appropriate way or setup to make calls. I also googled for any libraries and i saw some TAPI but was not able to get correct way. Please help me out with this. My cisco ip phone is 7940. My environment is Windows XP. Please let me know if you need more details. No problems with me even if you propose a solution involving coding or a non coding way of downloading and installing any applications. Thanks in advance. • How expensive to run PC 24/7 or how to figure out how to determine it?

  I realize this question is difficult to answer as it would be different based on users location, what there PC is doing and what hardware it consist of, along with other factors but I am hoping someone could give me a very rough estimate. I have always ran many PC's in my home 24/7 and I am just now looking at it from a money/cost of electric point of view. 1) I live in Central Florida. Can anyone guesstomate/estimate the avaerage monthly or daily cost of running your average PC? Intel quad core processor, 1 SSD drive for OS and programs and 4-5 1-2 TB hard drives in a RAID setup for data. 750watt PSU. What would your guess be? 2) Also is there an accurate way to figure this out (non-super technical and confusing to a non-math person please) Also I have seen those kill-a-watt devices, do they figure this kind of stuff out for you? 3) Does a larger PSU make your PC consume more power? Thanks for any help, you can most likely tell I am somewhat lost about this!

• How to set up RAID-0 first time on new PC?

  I have built basic PC's in the past but have never used a RAID array at all. SO now I am buying parts to build my new PC, it will be an intel i7 processor. My motherboard will have RAID support which I will use instead of an aftermarket raid controller for now. Also I plan to use 2 SSD drives in RAID-0 for my windows 7 OS. (Please note that I am aware of the issues with doing this, including lack of TRIM support when using RAID with SSD drives. I am OK with it not working as I can just re[place the drives in a year or so or wheneer they become more sluggish). SO here is my question part. If I assemble the motherboard, PSU, processor, RAM, vidm card, etc and then go to turn the PC on, it will have the 2 SSD drives hooked up. so I assume I will then soon the BIOS screen before I install windows? How to I go about making the 2 drives work in RAID-0 at this point? I do the raid part before installing my OS right? Please help with the steps involved from assembling the parts of the PC and then turning it on, to the part of getting the RAID-0 set up between the 2 drives and then installing my windows 7 OS from a Optical drive? Please help, all advice, instructions, tips appreciated as long as on topic. I do not need to be told that this is a bad idea as far as if 1 drive fails I losse it all, I plan on having a disk IMAGE to be able to restore my OS and software to a new set of drives at anytime needed in the event of drive failure. • Canon MG8150 - unable to scan document to PC via wireless router, but works via USB connection?

  Please help. Get error that scanner disconnected or locked "code:5,146,555" when I try to scan a document to PC or attach to an email. Can't remember this function ever working and I've had this MFD for 2-3 years now. Printer function works fine via wireless, but not scanning. • Pen drive is recognizing as a USB Internet Dongle which connects to the PC. How do the Pen drive configure well in Ubuntu 12.04?

  Every time I connect my Pen drive it recognizes as more like a Dongle. The reason that I'm telling that if I connect it to the PC when I'm on the INTERNET, it will automatically copy all the files which are in the Dongle. So, I can't recognize which one is the Pen drive when I want to safely remove the device. I'm not sure whether it is the Pen drive or the Dongle..? Can anyone give me a good advice how to solve this problem?

• Automatic o/s reset on a dedicated internet browsing Windows 7 pc.

  I have just purchased a new Acer Revo nettop PC for dedicated internet browsing. It will be the only pc on a home network. My original plan was to install one virtual PC for family browsing, another for remote web based server administration and ban browser use from the host Windows 7 o/s. The idea was that I could recover to a fresh VHD image once a week to eliminate any build up of malware inside the browser VMs. However now I am looking for alternative solutions since the Intel Atom cpu does not have hardware VT support which Windows Virtual PC requires. Would it be possible to engineer some type of routine overnight host o/s wipe and recovery? I guess cyber cafes do something like this? The only user data that would need to be retained across a recovery would be browser bookmarks but these could be exported to remote service. Edit 1: I am thinking the o/s reset could be done via some disk image recovery process. Edit 2: Just had a brainwave. Routine browsing could be done via the new Google Chrome O/S. I have just seen a video of the Google Chrome o/s booting off a usb pen drive in seconds.

So, I charged it for 24hrs and again checked that when the power failed my PC was automatically shut down. But in the time of power no supply from ups bt .......is my ups is working properly or not else there is direct power. It will cause any harm to my pc. my questions are..... Is the UPS functioning properly or not? If not, then will it harm my pc? If it is functioning, will it regulate direct power to pc without any cause? Is my UPS battery not working? What should I do to make my UPS batteries last for at least a year? I am using FRONTECH UPS 600va (Warranty for both ups and battery is expired) I already changed the battery 8 months previously.   I always Hibernate my PC. Sometimes when I boot, it does not recognize the mouse/keyboard or any USB devices. I've also setup it to go in sleep in 5 minutes. In that case I can't restart the PC so that USB starts working. When I press the Power button then it starts shutdown but asks confirmation twice, one is for shutdown by force confirmation and then there is one more. When my USB is disabled I can't input these options. So I switch off the power. Eventually I noticed that I can power on the PC by pressing keyboard or mouse, and even moving mouse. After searched this in google, I turned off Sleep and Hibernate in Power Options - System Settings - Shutdown settings, but it still did not work. Would anyone please help me? • FTP "PUT" fails from Virtual Machine, but not host PC: 504 Command not implemented for that paramete

  I have an FTP Script I'm using to automate a file transfer. The transfer works fine on my PC (XP SP2), but when I try and run it on a VM on my PC (XP SP2), the "put" commands gives off: 504 Command not implemented for that parameter. FTP File: open [ftp site] [username] [password] cd [directory on FTP server] binary hash put ..\[subfolder1]\[Subfolder2]\[subfolder3]\[filename] bye The FTP site/server is around the world, and not under my control. From what I understand of a 504, that means the command should NEVER work, but since the same script DOES work on my PC (hosting the VM), that eliminates syntax, file naming, etc. The put command when triggered from the VM, actually creates a 0 length file on the target FTP server, but doesn't populate the file.
