• ubuntu 12.04 how do I select a custom program to open specific file type

  I want to set a filetype to be opened by a specific program other than ubuntu's default. I usually right click properties open with and select the application I need. This however does not work in this case. The application I want is not shown in the "open with" dialog and there apparently is no way I can browse to it or type in a custom command like I used to in 10.04. Is this a bug that I should file or a feature that can be worked around?

• Ubuntu 12.04 - Swiching Multiple Windows from a Program

  I'm having problem switching multiple windows from a same program. For example, if I have 2 windows opened for firefox at the same time and I wanted to switch from one another, it used to display a 2 small grid preview for each session when I click on the icon. However, that function doesn't seem to be working on my ubuntu 12.04 now. It doesn't response when I click on the firefox (or other application) icon in the sidebar. Does anyone know how to fix this? By the way, I know ALT-TAB can switch windows too, but it's hard to switch if I have 7 pdf documents opened at the same time. So I really wish to have this feature fixed. Thanks in advance.

• Get system info from C program?

  I'm writing a little program in C that I want to use to output some system stats to my HD44780 16x2 character display. The system I'll be working with is a Debian ARM system and, although irrelevant, the display is on the GPIO header.(The system is a Raspberry Pi). As an initial (somewhat unambitious) attempt, I'd like to start with something simple like RAM and CPU usage (I'm new to C). I understand that if I make external command calls I need to fork() and execve() (or some equiv that will let me return the results), what I would like to know is how I go about getting the information I want in a nice clean format that I can use. Surely I will not have to call (for e.g); free -h And then use awk or similar to chop out the piece I want? There must be a cleaner way? The question should be seen as more of a generic, what is best practice for getting info about the system in C (the RAM/CPU usage are just an initial example).

  This started to happen immediately after I had rebooted the first time after doing a system upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10. It first starts with a dialogue that says "System program problem detected". Then when I try to hit 'report problem' not much happens. I am led through a dialogue that always ends up the problem cannot be solved. I am running a MacBook1,1 I am aware this is not a lot of information, however I'm not sure which information I need to publish and how should I obtain it to debug this problem. Here's a screenshot!

• Newbie needs to learn basic file management

  I have been using Ubuntu for abut 2 weeks and and still frustrated by simple file operations. I want to find a file called 9.jpg. Every internal command 3-rd party program I have tried also gives me 99.jpg, 999.jpg, lovepotion number9.jpg and a zillion other similar ones. How do you search for an EXACT file name WITHOUT wildcards? This is only my most recent frustration. I'm obviously missing something basic. good tutorial anywhere?

• Selenium-Nunit Program Structure

  My office has a suite of web reporting engines written in VB. All in all there's about 300 reports with varying displays depending on the data being input into them. I'm trying to establish an efficient way to deal with such a major diversity, but am struggling with creating a system that won't be a nightmare to code/maintain. What I've considered doing is: On program launch, read the steps required for each test page. This may have multiple tests for the same page with varying inputs. Write each iteration of the test in XML file under $env:temp/testname Use the TestCaseSource attribute of Nunit to funnel every related xml file as a source. My major stumbling block has been how to get that data to the Nunit framework. Is Nunit really appropriate for what I'm trying to do, or is it too static?

• Organizations that encourage kids to program

  Since my son started going to school, I've been noticing a very serious lack of organizations to encourage kids to program or at least letting them know how to get involved in programming. Are there any groups that you know of to help kids out this area?? And I'm not referring to tools to help kids learn, I'm referring to groups that will help in getting kids interested in programming. Here are a few that I know of: Dreamspark Lego First Robotics Imagine Cup Are there anymore out there? And are there any that work at the elementary - high school levels?? • Should Git be used for documentation and project management? Should the code be in a separate repository?

  I'm starting up a Git repository for a group project. Does it make sense to store documents in the same Git repository as code - it seems like this conflicts with the nature of the git revision flow. Here is a summary of my question(s): Is the Git revisioning style going to be confusing if both code and documents are checked into the same repository? Experiences with this? Is Git a good fit for documentation revision control? I am NOT asking if a Revision Control System in general should or shouldn't be used for documentation - it should. • The Properties dialog box not working for any Start Menu Program Lubuntu 14.04

  When Lubuntu 14.04 first came out, the Properties dialog was present for all Start Menu Programs but did not work when right-clicked on as nothing happened and no other box popped up the the Start Menu Program information, such as the executable info, etc. Then the issue was fixed. Now the issue has returned when I upgraded to Lubuntu 14.04.1. Is there any way to retrieve the Properties info pop-up box via a configuration file? Does the issue have to do with a faulty LXShortcut? I noticed when I uninstalled the LXShortcut the Properties tab disappeared. When I re-installed the Properties tab returned however once again when you right-click on the Properties tab nothing happens. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Program/Wrapper (how do you call it) to automate a certain script

  In this question a script is provided, that minimizes all the other windows except the active one. But the thing is, to trigger this script a (shortcut) key-combination has to be pressed. I would love it, if it would be possible to automate this behavior, i.e. no matter what I do, only the active window is not minimized. This way I cannot view more then one open window at the same tine, which is what I'm after. Is it possible to write a script, that does this ? I a question I asked a while ago (where I learned about the above script), someone said, the proper way to do this, would be through a wrapper through which every program starts. I would also be very happy with a more sloppy solution, like activating this script 100 times per second (simulating pressing the shortcut combination a 100 times per second), if it is feasible - although I was warned, that that may not be a very good idea.

• How to program a cutting tool for 3D model in game

  I'm looking for a resource to figure out how to program a function to cut a 3d model in game. Example: Enemy/NPC is sliced into 2 pieces with a sword. His body is not hollow, you can see bloody texture where normally a 'polygon hole' would be. The first step is to actually 'cut/slice' the model, then add in polygons to fill the hole in the model. I know this can be done in 3D modelling software, but I'm not sure how to go about doing this in a game, code-wise. I do not wish to use 'pre cut-up" models, the code will determine where the cut is. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

  I have a friend in prison who wants to learn to program. He's got no access to a computer so I was wondering if people could recommend books that would be a good introduction to programming without requiring a computer. Obviously he's going to need to keep learning once he gets out and has access to a computer, but how should he get started now (he's got lots of free time to read). Based on his goals I think ruby or javascript/html5 might be good paths for him to start down, but really for now it's most important to explain the ideas. Even if it's all pseudocode. These need to be physical publications, paperbacks are preferred, and consider that he's got limited shelf space so large books could be a problem.

• CreateDXGIFactory Doesn't Let Program Exit

  I'm using CreateDXGIFactory to get the graphics adapters and display modes. When I call it, it works fine and I get all the data. However, when I exit my program, the main Win32 thread exits, but something stays open because it keeps debugging. Does CreateDXGIFactory create an extra thread and I'm not closing it? I don't understand. The only thing I would suspect is that in the documentation it says it doesn't work if it's called from DllMain. It is in a DLL, but it's not called from DllMain. And it doesn't fail, either. I'm using DirectX 11.

• Possibility Program for number of pieces

  I would like to put a program together to calculate the number of 60' pieces would be needed from a list of shorter pieces. For example, I sell rebar cut to length from our standard length of 60'-0". Now the length the customer requires are as follows: 343 pc @ 12.5' 35 pc @ 13' 10 pc @ 15' 63 pc @ 15.5'....... There are 56 total lengths ranging from 12.5' to 30.58' The idea is to limit the amount of waste from the 60' piece. The input from the user would be: number of differnt lengths Length of piece to cut from count of different lengths The result would be the number of prime pieces needed to fulfill the order. What well-known algorithms exist that could help me solve this problem?

I'm building it from scratch, because I think that in this way I will learn the most. I have stumbled upon MVC's and CMS, CodeIgniter really got my attention, and the basic use is very straight forward. But I do not understand the inner workings completely. So I have decided that it might be better to just develop from scratch and maybe return to codeIgniter later, was that good decision? Would it be better to use CodeIgniter and learn from that?

  I took a Game Design class a while ago that used Multimedia Fusion 2. Now I would like to get it on my computer, but I don't have the disk anymore. I have access to the program on my Dad's computer, but I want to get it on mine. Is there a way to get MMF2 for free on my computer? If not, are there any other free game design programs like MMF2 (knowing code is not necessary)? Edit: If I paid the $50 to upgrade to 2.5, could I put it on a second computer, or is that not possible?

  What are some good ways to have patch management and systems/hardware inventory for a Windows (Server 2003 or 2008) network? For example, at a minimum knowing the basics for all the machines out on the network such as OS version, patch level, what hotfixes they have, processor, ram, etc. Even better would be knowing more details such as peripherals. Ideally if there were a way to push service packs, and hotfixes (and other software?) to the machines, that would be great. What are some options for this?

Needs to be open-source or have a license level that grants access to source, and needs to be ASP.net (C# preferred, but could live with VB.net) Ultimately, we'll need to be able to assign facilities and instructors, manage attendees, send notifications, and build calendar views. We'll also be integrating with our website to allow on-line sign-up and other things for attendees to manage on their own. We do expect to implement quite a bit of it in-house, but we'd like as broad of a base to start from as we can get. Still, just a really good web-based meeting-room reservation system might make a good enough starting point.   As a junior technician I've had to deal with (or will have to deal with) some problems in the past and only being a junior technician I don't have the confidence or respect from management staff to speak up. For instance, we're having a entirely new system. From Windows Server 2003/XP going to Windows Server 2008 R2/Windows 7/VMWare/Digital Signage and the current amount of time dedicated to the training of the IT support department currently stands at 0. They seem to think that all IT systems are the same and are going to get a bit of shock when I can't help them. I think there;s some UK legislation saying a school/business have to put money and time aside for training, but I'm not sure. What have you had to deal with?

• Have you successfully installed Active Directory Management Gateway Service on 2008?

  I've got a pair of 2008 DCs onto which I've been trying to install the Active Directory Management Gateway Service. (I only wanted it on one but when that didn't work I tried another.) Both are failing with: "The update does not apply to your system". They're both Windows Server 2008 Domain Controllers, x64 version. Both have .NET 3.5 SP1 installed on them. One has Service Pack 2 installed and the other has the hotfix from 967574 installed. Both servers were rebooted after the installed of each of the required updates. I have attempted to install Windows6.0-KB968934-x64.msu on both and get the error reported above. According to the docs, my machines meet the requirements, so something must be missing from the requirements. Or there's something odd about these DCs. Has anyone succeeded? If so, did you have to install/remove anything (else) to get it installed?

• SQL SERVER – SELECT TOP Shortcut in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

  This is tool is pretty old, yet always comes as a handy tip. I had a great trip at TechEd in India. And, during one of my presentations, I was asked if there are any shortcuts to SELECT only TOP 100 records from SSMS. I immediately told him that if he explores the table in SSMS, he can just right click on it and SELECT TOP 1000 records. If he wanted only 100 records, then he could edit that 1000 to 100 by means of going to Options. Go to Options, then hover the mouse over the SQL Server Object Explorer, then proceed to Commands. Afterwards, change the Value for Select Top <n> Audit Records. After narrating the steps, he told me that he was not looking for the right click option; rather he was asking if there is any kind of keyboard shortcut for convenience’s sake. Actually, a keyboard shortcut is also possible. SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) lets you configure the settings you want using a shortcut. Here is how you can do it. Go to Options, then to Environment. Proceed to Keyboard, and from there, configure your T-SQL with the desired keyword. Now, open SSMS New Query Window, and then click and type in any table name.  After that, just hit the shortcut you just made earlier. Doing this should display TOP 100 records in the Result window. I am sure this trick is quite old, but it is still helpful to many.
