• Is it worth it to learn an esoteric programming language?

  Wikipedia: An esoteric programming language (sometimes shortened to esolang) is a programming language designed as a test of the boundaries of computer programming language design, as a proof of concept, or as a joke. There is usually no intention of the language being adopted for real-world programming. Such languages are often popular among hackers and hobbyists. This use of esoteric is meant to distinguish these languages from more popular programming languages. Some more popular languages may appear esoteric (in the usual sense of the word) to some, and though these could arguably be called "esoteric programming languages" too, this is not what is meant. I think it might be worth it, just to learn a new language and go through the process, although only if you don't have anything else to do (like a real project or learning a new real language). But what does the community think? Is there some value in these languages?

  What are the best options for real-time collaborative editing for .NET development? (C#,VB.NET, ASP.NET - not Mono unless it is the best way to get collaboration) 1) Anything possible with visual studio? 2) Collaborative editors? I know Eclipse has real-time collaboration, but I don't know how far you can combine it with .NET support. 3) Web-based tools? 4) Desktop sharing tools like VNC, NX etc. The main points is that 2 developers in different locations should be able to see edits in real time. Both should be able to edit, or it should be easy to switch control. Regarding .NET, syntax highlighting etc is better than nothing.

  I'm trying to create an SQLite 3 database from Python. I have a few types I'd like to insert into each record: A float, and then 3 groups of n floats, currently a tuple but could be an array or list.. I'm not well-enough versed in Python to understand all the differences. My problem is the INSERT statement.   I have a file that was written with the following Delphi declaration ... Var: fh: File Of Tfulldata; I want to analyse the data in the files (many MB in size) using Python if possible - is there an easy way to read in the data and cast the data into Python objects similar in form to the Delphi records? Does anyone know of a library perhaps that does this?

• How do I maximize a function in Mathematica which takes in a variable length list as input?

  I have a time-series like function which gives an output based on a list of real numbers(i.e. you can run the function on a list of 1,2,3,... real numbers). The issue I'm encountering is how to maximize the function for a given list length(subject to a set of constraints). I could fix the function to a fixed number of real numbers(i.e. f [x_Real, y_Real] instead of f[x_List]) and treat x and y as the first two elements of the list, and call Maximize on the function, but this is not really elegant. I want to be able to easily change the number of elements in the list. What is the best way to optimize a function like I described, which takes a list as an argument, for a fixed list length?

• Open source C compiler in C#?

  I've been getting into compiler creation. I've found some terrific beginner stuff and advanced stuff but nothing in the middle. I've created 3 different simple proof-of-concept compilers for toy languages but I want to expose myself to something real. The most straight forward real language in terms of syntax seems to be C. Since the language I'm most comfortable with right now is C#, I'd love to study the source code of a real non-tutorial C compiler written in C#. Does one (with source code available) exist?

• How do you create a formula that has diminishing returns?

  I guess this is a math question and not a programming question, but what is a good way to create a formula that has diminishing returns? Here are some example points on how I want the curve to look like. f(1) = 1 f(1.5)= .98 f(2) = .95 f(2.5) = .9 f(3) = .8 f(4) = .7 f(5) = .6 f(10) = .5 f(20) = .25 Notice that as the input gets higher, the percentage decreases rapidly. Is there any way to model a function that has a very smooth and accurate curve that says this? Another way to say it is by using a real example. You know in Diablo II they have Magic Find? There are diminishing returns for magic find. If you get 100%, the real magic find is still 100%. But the more get, your actual magic find goes down. So much that say if you had 1200, your real magic find is probably 450%. So they have a function like: actualMagicFind(magicFind) = // some way to reduced magic find

• Bitmap .compress() returning false

  Hi! The next call to Bitmap.compress(), has a different behavior on the Emulator and on a real device. In the Emulator, result is true, and in a real device the same call returns false. FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(destinationFile, true); boolean result = myBitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.PNG, 100, fos); The thing is that on the emulator this is working great, on a real device ( a HERO) when calling .compress(), this returns false, witch means that it was unable to convert the image properly.   Is there a way to import a Python module stored in a cStringIO data structure vs. physical disk file? It looks like "imp.load_compiled(name, pathname[, file])" is what I need, but the description of this method (and similar methods) has the following disclaimer: Quote: "The file argument is the byte-compiled code file, open for reading in binary mode, from the beginning. It must currently be a real file object, not a user-defined class emulating a file." [1] I tried using a cStringIO object vs. a real file object, but the help documentation is correct - only a real file object can be used. Any ideas on why these modules would impose such a restriction or is this just an historical artifact? Are there any techniques I can use to avoid this physical file requirement? • O(log N) == O(1) - Why not?

  Whenever I consider algorithms/data structures I tend to replace the log(N) parts by constants. Oh, I know log(N) diverges - but does it matter in real world applications? log(infinity) < 100 for all practical purposes. I am really curious for real world examples where this doesn't hold. To clarify: I understand O(f(N)) I am curious about real world examples where the asymptotic behaviour matters more than the constants of the actual performance. If log(N) can be replaced by a constant it still can be replaced by a constant in O( N log N). This question is for the sake of (a) entertainment and (b) to gather arguments to use if I run (again) into a controversy about the performance of a design.

• Differentiate VMware network adapter from physical network adapters

  I have to differentiate between the real addresses and the VM addresses using any Windows API. I'm using Getadaptersaddresses API to populate a list of ipaddresses for the local machine. I need to extract only the "real" addresses apart from the addresses associated with the VMware network adapter and other addresses(auto-configuration and tunnel adapter addresses) I've not been able to find any API or any flag to differentiate this. Is there any way this can be done? PS:The IfType flag in the IP_ADAPTER_ADDRESSES structure returned by Getadaptersaddresses doesn't help me differentiate between VMware addresses and the real addresses

• Passing data between Castle Windsor's Interceptors

  I'm adopting Castle Windsor for my WCF project and feel really amazed about this. However, I'm having a scenario that I don't really know if Castle Windsor supports. For example I have the following chained Interceptors Interceptor 1 > Interceptor 2 > Interceptor 3 > Interceptor 4 > Real method Interceptor 1 returns some data and I want that to be available in Interceptor 2 Interceptor 2 in turn does it work and returns the data that I want to make avaialbe in the 3,4, interceptor. The real case scenario is that we're having a WCF service, Interceptor 1 will parse the request header into a Header object(username, password, etc.). The latter interceptors and real method will ultilize this Header object. I know that I can use Session variable to transport data, but is it a built-in, more elegant, more reliable way to handle this?

• Cannot find libmysqlclient under /usr. while build PHP 5.2 from source on Ubuntu 12.4

  I was trying to build PHP 5.2.17 from source on Ubuntu 12.4 64bit using this configuration: ./configure --prefix=/opt/php5.2 --with-config-file-path=/opt/php5.2 --with-mysql but I keep getting this error: configure: error: Cannot find libmysqlclient under /usr. Note that the MySQL client library is not bundled anymore! I suspected that dev package for mysql is not installed so tried installing libmysqlclient-dev but it was already there. Any Idea how to resolve this? EDIT1: I minimized the configure command so it just focuses to mysql. also I'm running a 64bit version of ubuntu. EDIT2: tried running ldconfig -v |grep mysql and here is the output # ldconfig -v |grep mysql /sbin/ldconfig.real: Path `/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu' given more than once /sbin/ldconfig.real: Path `/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu' given more than once /sbin/ldconfig.real: Cannot stat /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_db.so: No such file or directory libmysqlclient.so.18 -> libmysqlclient_r.so.18.0.0 libmysqlpp.so.3 -> libmysqlpp.so.3.1.0

  Basically, I am diving ever deeper into complex programming practices. I've almost no friends that are experienced (or more experienced than me) programmers to learn from, so I am looking for the next best thing - learning from the work of strangers. Can anyone recommend a real world finished and working application written well and OOP-centered. I'd like to take and analyze its source. Bonus if it's based on Zend Framework. What I am interested most in is objects that unlike desktop applications, have only one real operation done to them (or to their representation in DB or session) during their lifetime (or pageload), like user-logIn(). I'm interested in optimal and reusable design patterns and their real life implementations.

• Apache/PHP is determined to serve the wrong file

  I have a page that is called with a url like http://testserver/path/to/foo/bar/ but apache is serving the wrong file altogether. /path/to/ is a real directory where all the code and .htaccess file is. foo/bar/ is supposed to redirect to foo_bar.php with a RewriteRule, but it never gets there. It's not a mod_rewrite issue as I have commented out all the rules that could be interfering, which should give me 404s for that request, but the same problem occurs: the file that is served is /path/to/foo.php, so in it I var_dump $_SERVER and get: REQUEST_URI = /path/to/foo/bar/ SCRIPT_NAME = /path/to/foo.php SCRIPT_FILENAME = /real/path/to/foo.php PATH_INFO = /bar/ PATH_TRANSLATED = /real/bar/ PHP_SELF = /path/to/foo.php/bar/ Why is this request being routed to this file at all?

• How can I get my UserControl to look like a ComboBox?

  I have a user control containing a TextBox, ToggleButton and Popup, just like the real ComboBox. Now my problem is to style it so that it looks just like the normal ComboBox. In Blend, I can "Edit Template/Edit a Copy..." of a real ComboBox to get the bits and pieces I need to get it to look right. For one Windows theme (Aero). If the application is run on another theme (e.g Luna), the control does not change its look, it still has the Aero look. Do I have to supply a style/template for each Windows theme, or can I somehow get hold of (at run-time) the default ComboBox style and apply it to my UserControl? Instead of making a UserControl, I have tried modifying a real ComboBox to my needs, but I just couldn't get it to work. How can I replace ALL the logic of a ComboBox with my own?

  In SO site both real users and temporary users can add a new questions. I assume each user type has a different table. My question is how can I attach the question to the right user? I assuming the temp users have their own table from the following reasons: Temp users don't have all the data that real users have. like: email, password, and all users details. On the other hand, temp users are a lot more then real users. So it make more sense to have they in their own table.

• Hyperlinked, externalized source code documentation

  Why do we still embed natural language descriptions of source code (i.e., the reason why a line of code was written) within the source code, rather than as a separate document? Given the expansive real-estate afforded to modern development environments (high-resolution monitors, dual-monitors, etc.), an IDE could provide semi-lock-step panels wherein source code is visually separated from -- but intrinsically linked to -- its corresponding comments. For example, developers could write source code comments in a hyper-linked markup language (linking to additional software requirements), which would simultaneously prevent documentation from cluttering the source code. What shortcomings would inhibit such a software development mechanism? A mock-up to help clarify the question: When the cursor is at a particular line in the source code (shown with a blue background, above), the documentation that corresponds to the line at the cursor is highlighted (i.e., distinguished from the other details). As noted in the question, the documentation would stay in lock-step with the source code as the cursor jumps through the source code. A hot-key could switch between "documentation mode" and "development mode". Potential advantages include: More source code and more documentation on the screen(s) at once Ability to edit documentation independently of source code (regardless of language?) Write documentation and source code in parallel without merge conflicts Real-time hyperlinked documentation with superior text formatting Quasi-real-time machine translation into different natural languages Every line of code can be clearly linked to a task, business requirement, etc. Documentation could automatically timestamp when each line of code was written (metrics) Dynamic inclusion of architecture diagrams, images to explain relations, etc. Single-source documentation (e.g., tag code snippets for user manual inclusion). Note: The documentation window can be collapsed Workflow for viewing or comparing source files would not be affected How the implementation happens is a detail; the documentation could be: kept at the end of the source file; split into two files by convention (filename.c, filename.c.doc); or fully database-driven By hyperlinked documentation, I mean linking to external sources (such as StackOverflow or Wikipedia) and internal documents (i.e., a wiki on a subdomain that could cross-reference business requirements documentation) and other source files (similar to JavaDocs). The client/server model doesn't matter, it could be like haxball (i.e. the room creator is the host) or changing host, or the server is host (if there is such a thing) I just want to learn the basics to create a field where players can move their characters in real time. So where should I start? Please guide me into the right direction. And with examples please. I found out that RTMFP does what I seek, but how do I use it? • Cost justification for buying a 32GB superfast Alienware M18x with a price tag of around £5K ($10K)

  When considering buying a laptop that’s going to cost me around £5,000 I really need to justify the purchase from a business perspective; my Lenovo W700 has served me very well for the last 2 years, it’s an extremely good machine and as solid as a rock (and as heavy), alas though it is limited to the 8GB. As SQL Server 2012 approaches and with my interest in working in the Business Intelligence space over the next year or two it is clear I need a powerful machine that I can run a full infrastructure though virtualised. My requirements For High Availability / Disaster Recovery research and demonstration Machine for a domain controller Four machines in a shared disk cluster (SQL Server Clustering active – active etc.) Five  machines in a file share cluster (SQL Server Availability Groups) For Business Intelligence research and demonstration Not entirely sure how many machine I want to run here, but it would be to cover the entire BI stack in an enterprise setting, sharepoint, sql server etc. For Big Data Research I have a fondness for the NoSQL approach to scalability and dealing with large volumes so I need a number of machines to research VoltDB, Hadoop etc. As you can see the requirements for a SQL Server consultant to service their clients well is considerable; will 8GB suffice, alas no, it will no longer do. I’m a very strong believer that in order to do your job well you must expense it, short cuts only cost you time, waiting 5 minutes instead of an hour for something to run not only saves me time but my clients time, I can do things quicker and more importantly I can demonstrate concepts. My W700 with the 8GB of RAM and SSD’s cost me around £3.5K two years ago, to be honest I’ve not got the full use I wanted out of it but the machine has had the power when I’ve needed it, it’s served me and my clients well. Alienware now do a model (the M18x) with 32GB of RAM; yes 32GB in a laptop! Dual drives so I can whack a couple of really good SSD’s in there, a quad core with hyper threading i7 and a decent speed. I can reduce the cost of the memory by getting it from Crucial, so instead of £1.5K for 32GB it will be around £900, I can also cost save on the SSD as well. The beauty about the M18x is that it is USB3.0, SATA 3 and also really importantly has eSATA, running VM’s will never be easier, I can have a removeable SSD with my VM’s on it and can plug it into my home machine or laptop – an ideal world! The initial outlay of £5K is peanuts compared to the benefits I’ll give my clients, I will be able to present real enterprise concepts, I’ll also be able to give training on those real enterprise concepts and with real, albeit virtualised machines.
