  • How to better copy&paste big files over RDP?

    Recently I was making a few attempts to copy&paste a big (1.2 GB) file to remote computer over RDP. The remote computer is virtual testing machine with MS Windows Server 2008 Datacenter. First I tried to copy&paste before midnight when the transfer speed was limited by client computer ISP to 100 kB/s. So, it required a few hours and I was forced to cancel transfer since remote desktop became too unresponsive and sluggish (slow). So, I re-started it over midnight when my local transfer speed is over 4 GB/s 4MB/s (sorry for typo). So, my impression is that independently on speed (broadband) of copy&paste transfer the remote computer becomes sluggish while copying over RDP. At the same time downloading from internet doesn't make remote host sluggish. AFAIU, it is because clipboard of remote computer and so its memory becomes overloaded by transfer. How can I control (restrict) the usage of clipboard for specific process (pasting of file)? What are the possible way to control it? Update: After reading that slow speed of transfer is caused by encryption used for copy&pasting over RDP and since I believe I am more interested in overall efficiency: both the time, or rapidness, of getting file as well as possibility to work without waiting, I changed the question title from: How to control the usage of remote desktop clipboard usage for pasting a big file? to How to better copy&paste big files over RDP? For example, is it better to copy&paste one huge (zip) archive or unzip it and copy paste a folder with unzipped files? And more exactly I wanted to ask: What are possible ways to improve overall experience: the speed of transfer (i.e. availability of needed file) responsiveness of remote host (making remote coputer available for work before completion of copy&pasting)?

    Together with a friend we are looking to develop a website (using Symfony2). We are on a Shared Hosting with SSH access. Below is the environment we'd like to setup: * Use git as Version Control (we are new to Git) * Share the tasks and develop on our local machines * Push the updates onto the remote server Here's our initial thoughts on how to do it (assuming Git is already running both locally and remotely): * Install Symfony on the Remote Server (basic setup) * Get a clone (using Git) of the project locally * Develop project locally and push updates (using Git) on the remote server Does this approach make sense, if not, any recommendations?   • What's the best version control/QA workflow for a legacy system?

    I am struggling to find a good balance with our development and testing process. We use Git right now, and I am convinced that ReinH's Git Workflow For Agile Teams is not just great for capital-A Agile, but for pretty much any team on DVCS. That's what I've tried to implement but it's just not catching. We have a large legacy system with a complex environment, hundreds of outstanding and undiscovered defects, and no real good way to set up a test environment with realistic data. It's also hard to release updates without disrupting users. Most of all, it's hard to do thorough QA with this process... and we need thorough testing with this legacy system. I feel like we can't really pull off anything as slick as the Git workflow outlined in the link. What's the way to do it?

    For years, I’ve been using the “Remote Desktops” mmc plugin to manage servers in our infrastructure.  I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 and Remote Desktops is nowhere to be found!  I search and searched and came across a forum listing saying “Why don’t you just use Remove Desktop Connection Manager?” I downloaded it and started using it and its WAY better than Remote Desktops!  I’m glad they took it out and I discovered this tool.  I wish I had discovered this two years ago!   • Is there a version control system that can show changes to a specific method or function?

    Sometimes it would be nice to be able to say something like: (git|svn|hg|etc) diff Foo.c:main (git|svn|hg|etc) log log Foo.c:main to see the changes made to a specific function within a source file since the last commit, or the complete history of changes. My question is two-fold: Does something exist that does this? Would such a tool be practical? It would have to do some simple parsing of the code at each revision in order to compare different versions of the function; would the overhead be too much for it to be efficient?

    We have a Windows server (2008 R2) with the "Remote Desktop Services" feature installed and no Active Directory domain. Remote desktop is set up to "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)". This means that before the remote screen is displayed, the connection is authenticated in a "Windows Security: Enter your credentials" window. The only two role services installed on this server is the RD Session Host and Licensing. When the "User must change password at next logon" checkbox is selected in the properties for a local user on this server, the following displays on a client computer after attempting to connect using the credentials that were last valid: On some other servers using RDP for admin access (but without the Remote Desktop Services role installed), the behavior is different -- the session begins and the user is given a change password prompt on the remote screen. What do I need to do to replicate this behavior on the Remote Desktop Services server?

    Sometimes I need to make a config change on another user's PC. The user doesn't have admin rights so I try to start control panel using the runas command. I can start other stuff with the command but if I try to start control panel nothing happens. It doesn't even give me an error message. Alternatively I start another command prompt as admin (using the runas command again) and from that try to start control panel. Still no joy. Is control panel designed not to be startable from a non-admin profile as an admin user?

    Is there something where I can see and control single(!) windows of PC1 on PC2 remotely. Basically like it is possible with X-Windows. I am not talking / asking about A software which displays the whole desktop remotely (like VNC, Windows RDP). A X-windows server for windows, to connect to Linux. The answer here ( Windows Remote Desktop Connection for just a single window (or a single program) ) requires Windows Server 2008. I need to run this on two Windows 7 machines. Example: PC1 shows three windows, and I transfer, see, and control window 2 on PC2. -- Edit -- I have checked whether there is an X-Server for Windows <- Windows. I have also tried including the css in a element in the header section, but it still only affects the elements that are there when the page is created. So my question is, does anyone have any idea on why the css is not being applied to elements that are created after the page is loaded? I have also tried no applying the css until after all of my elements are added, but the results don't change.

Enabling Cross domain in Firefox and Chrome was easy by setting the header on the handling server: header("Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *"); But this doesn't help enabling it in Internet Explorer. When I try: httpreq.send(''); it stops with error Access denied. How can this be enabled in Internet Explorer?
