• Naming the Weapons and Designing Weapons Based in Real-life During Game Development [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Do you need a license for weapon models? 6 answers Is it legit or copyright safe if I name the actual name of the gun model such as AK-47, M16, Remington 870, and so on? I'm on the works for making a simple 2D 3rd-person shooter game. One of the examples is the Counter Strike and the game listed the name of weapons based on the real life models and so developers decided to created this named it for the weapon designs. If not, should I make either falsify the name of weapons (e.g. 9mm instead of Glock 17 from a Syphon Filter game) or make fictional weapons like the ones developed behind Halo games?

• Problems in exporting terrain from autodesk 3ds

  i am trying to make small counter strike sort of game and for the terrain part i have exported the terrain in 3ds format from Autodesk 3ds-max and imported the same in opengl using lib3ds. Its working fine but with few problems: The terrain is mainly made up of some cubical boxes with texture on them and placed on a big flat surface with boundary wall. In opengl i have enabled anti aliasing but still there is too much aliasing on the boundaries (visible when rotating the camera). I have tiled the floor with some image but in opengl it is just the single image stretched over the complete surface. I have exported animated model (Skelton+mesh+material+animation) from 3ds and used cal3d library for reading the same. Model has a gun also which is not appearing in opengl and it too has too much of aliasing problem. I have googled around but couldn't find any relevant solutions. Thanks in advance

• CD/DVD drive not mounted when inserted with Disc of any kind

  I just noticed that if a insert a CD or a DVD of any kind, the Drive will start spinning but it will not show the mounted disc. Before it used to ask me what to do with the media inserted. Now it doesn't even do that. I ran in the terminal this code: eject -n and it displays this: " eject: device is `/dev/sr0'" what can I do to get the functionality back on my drive. also ran this command: sudo mount -o ro,unhide,uid=1000 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom but in return i get this: " mount: mount point /mnt/cdrom does not exist" Running Ubuntu 11.10 HERE IS THE HISTORY UNTIL NOW thanks Waltinator: I ran the 'dmesg' but don't know what I'm looking for. Im a newbie on this. The same thing with the 'ls -rlt /var/log' command. • JCP Calendar for 2013 - First EC Meeting 15-16 January

This year the EC will be holding meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area in January, and also in September, scheduled around the JavaOne San Francisco Conference; and, Credit Suisse will host the May EC Meeting in Zurich, Switzerland.  The first JCP EC Meeting of 2013 will be a Face to Face Meeting in Santa Clara, California USA, hosted by Intel.  We are of in the midst preparing the agenda now, but it will include a 2012 annual review, JSR Spec Lead presentations & updates, as well as JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process, Expert Group session.   In Hadoop, objects passed to reducers are reused. This is extremely surprising and hard to track down if you're not expecting it. Furthermore, the original tracker for this "feature" doesn't offer any evidence that this change actually improved performance (unless I missed it). It would speed up the system substantially if we reused the keys and values [...] but I think it is worth doing. This seems completely counter to this very popular answer. Is there some credence to the Hadoop developer's claim? Is there something "special" about Hadoop that would invalidate the notion of object creation being cheap?

• Asus Eee PC 701 4G hangs on boot

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Install Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

• What data counters / meters are available?

  Actually I have a wireless 3G modem that works well on Windows based operating system, its interface software were made Windows centric. It can still connect to internet on Ubuntu or other linux based operating system but it won't show the data counter (the interface which shows how much data has been transferred, at what speed). If I continue to surf internet in Linux then I won't have any idea how much data has been used and it would become heavy on my pocket. So I just want a software that let me know how much data has been transferred, if there is a limiter; that warns or disconnects me when I reach predefined MBs then its better. Please let me know if there is any software or script or something like that already there.

• UppercuT v1.0 and 1.1&ndash;Linux (Mono), Multi-targeting, SemVer, Nitriq and Obfuscation, oh my!

  Recently UppercuT (UC) quietly released version 1 (in August). I’m pretty happy with where we are, although I think it’s a few months later than I originally planned. I’m glad I held it back, it gave me some more time to think about some things a little more and also the opportunity to receive a patch for running builds with UC on Linux. We also released v1.1 very recently (December). UppercuT v1 Builds On Linux Perhaps the most significant changes to UC going v1 is that it now supports builds on Linux using Mono! This is thanks mostly to Svein Ackenhausen for the patches and working with me on getting it all working while not breaking the windows builds!  This means you can use mono on Windows or Linux. Notice the shell files to execute with Linux that come as part of UC now. Multi-Targeting Perhaps one of the hardest things to do that requires an automated build is multi-targeting. At v1 this is early, and possibly prone to some issues, but available.  We believe in making everything stupid simple, so it’s as simple as adding a comma to the microsoft.framework property. i.e. “net-3.5, net-4.0” to suddenly produce both framework builds. When you build, this is what you get (if you meet each framework’s requirements): At this time you have to let UC override the build location (as it does by default) or this will not work.  Semantic Versioning By now many of you have been using UppercuT for awhile and have watched how we have done versioning. Many of you who use git already know we put the revision hash in the informational/product version as the last octet. At v1, UppercuT has adopted the semantic versioning scheme. What does that mean? This is a short read, but a good one: http://SemVer.org SemVer (Semantic Versioning) is really using versioning what it was meant for. You have three octets. Major.Minor.Patch as in 1.1.0.  UC will use three different versioning concepts, one for the assembly version, one for the file version, and one for the product version. All versions - The first three octects of the version are owned by SemVer. Major.Minor.Patch i.e.: 1.1.0 Assembly Version - The assembly version would much closer follow SemVer. Last digit is always 0. Major.Minor.Patch.0 i.e: 1.1.0.0 File Version - The file version occupies the build number as the last digit. Major.Minor.Patch.Build i.e.: 1.1.0.2650 Product/Informational Version - The last octect of your product/informational version is the source control revision/hash. Major.Minor.Patch.RevisionOrHash i.e. (TFS/SVN): 1.1.0.235 i.e. (Git/HG): 1.1.0.a45ace4346adef0 SemVer is not on by default, the passive versioning scheme is still in effect. Notice that version.use_semanticversioning has been added to the UppercuT.config file (and version.patch in support of the third octet): Gems Support Gems support was added at v1. This will probably be deprecated as some point once there is an announced sunset for Nu v1. Application gems may keep it around since there is no alternative for that yet though (CoApp would be a possible replacement). Nitriq Support Nitriq is a code analysis tool like NDepend. It’s built by Mr. Jon von Gillern. It uses LINQ query language, so you can use a familiar idiom when analyzing your code base. It’s a pretty awesome tool that has a free version for those looking to do code analysis! To use Nitriq with UC, you are going to need the console edition.  To take advantage of Nitriq, you just need to update the location of Nitriq in the config: Then add the nitriq project files at the root of your source. Please refer to the Nitriq documentation on how these are created. UppercuT v1.1 Obfuscation One thing I started looking into was an easy way to obfuscate my code. I came across EazFuscator, which is both free and awesome. Plus the GUI for it is super simple to use. How do you make obfuscation even easier? Make it a convention and a configurable property in the UC config file! And the code gets obfuscated! Closing Definitely get out and look at the new release. It contains lots of chocolaty (sp?) goodness. And remember, the upgrade path is almost as simple as drag and drop!

  I would like to start giving unique names to "cache-able" files - i.e. *.css and *.js - in order to prevent caching, without requiring changes to the web-server settings (as is currently done in IIS). For instance, let's I have a JavaScript file called global.js. Going forward I would like it to have the name global.123.js when revision 123 is checked in. This would also require the following: The previous version of the file - perhaps it was global.115.js - is removed when the file is deployed. • Are Remote commit hooks in subversion possible?

  Hi there, my current setup is as follows: We have a Linux samba share that contains all the repository folders (with the hooks folder inside, amongst the others) All the developers have the share mapped as a network drive, and import to a local directory (normally C:\Server\RepositoryName) where they work on their files. All the machines accessing the drive (unfortunately) run windows. What I'm aiming to do is to have a hook on the Linux server that detects when a commit has been made, by which project, the revision number, the name of the developer who committed, etc. I looked into the hooks files, but they seem to be ran by the client. Is there a way to monitor svn changes and collect the relevant information from the Linux server?

• Android Loading Screen: How do I use a stack to load elements?

  I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. • Aren't there compilers better at telling the programmer what's wrong in a code ?

  I have worked a little while with the Microsoft compiler from Visual C++ but I worked a long time with G++, and I remember often having bad times understanding what was wrong in my code with the former. Beside binary code generation and optimisation, I think this is a very important feature of a C++ compiler: giving the programmer a clue that makes him understand as fast as possible what is wrong with his/her code. I can understand some programmers understand programming as some sort of "competition" to make less errors, but to me that's a counter productive opinion. I once tried Clang compiler for C from the LLVM thingie, I didn't use it for a long time, but I was impressed on how explicit and easy to understand the error messages were. I am seeking for advice on how i should design the system where every auction item will have a its own countdown timer stored in the database and when someone bids the auction item, the counter resets to 2 min. Every users who are connected to the system should see the same countdown timer for that particular auction. I am little confused on how i should design the system. Will there be a performance issue when there are frequent updates to the database (Mysql) where 15 active auctions are updated every seconds, the countdown timer decreases by a second in the database table for the particular auction.   We have a large bazaar repository and we want to convert it to a git repository. The bazaar repository contains the folders of each of the interns. Any documentation/code prepared by interns is committed in their directory so there are a huge number of commits. What steps should be performed to securely convert the bazaar repository to a git repository so that we do not lose any commit information. We firstly need to create a backup of the existing bazaar repository and then convert it.
