• Need help with WCF design

  I have been tasked with creating a set of web services. We are a Microsoft shop, so I will be using WCF for this project. There is an interesting design consideration that I haven't been able to figure out a solution for yet. I'll try to explain it with an example: My WCF service exposes a method named Foo(). 10 different users call Foo() at roughly the same time. I have 5 special resources called R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5. We don't really need to know what the resource is, other than the fact that a particular resource can only be in use by one caller at a time. Foo() is responsible to performing an action using one of these special resources. So, in a round-robin fashion, Foo() needs to find a resource that is not in use. If no resources are available, it must wait for one to be freed up. At first, this seems like an easy task. I could maybe create a singleton that keeps track of which resources are currently in use. The big problem is the fact that I need this solution to be viable in a web farm scenario. I'm sure there is a good solution to this problem, but I've just never run across this scenario before. I need some sort of resource tracker / provider that can be shared between multiple WCF hosts. Any ideas from the architects out there would be greatly appreciated!

• Why does Safari/Opera not work with this javascript code?

  Hi, I am working on a calendar that will show bookings. The height of containing the booking is calculated dynamically in proportion to the length of the booking. The following code works perfectly well in Firefox but not in Safari or Opera: function calculateBookingHeight(from, to) { var today = new Date; var end = new Date.UTC(today.getUTCFullYear(),today.getUTCMonth(),today.getUTCDate(),23); var start = new Date.UTC(today.getUTCFullYear(),today.getUTCMonth(),today.getUTCDate(),6); var from = new Date(from); var to = new Date(to); if (from > start && to < end) { var difference = (to - from) / 120000; } else if (from > start && to > end) { var difference = (end - from) / 120000; } else { var difference = 510 } return difference; } In summary, each hour on the calendar is a height of 30px. The second if statement deals with the end of the booking being the following day. If I replace the entire code block with return 510, Safari behaves as expected and sets the height of each booking to 510px so I assume it must be something in this function that is causing the problem.   I have a workflow that I want to looks something like this: / Worker 1 \ =Request Channel= - [Holding Queue|||] - Worker 2 - =Response Channel= \ Worker 3 / That is: Requests come in and they enter a FIFO queue Identical workers then pick up tasks from the queue At any given time any worker may work only one task When a worker is free and the holding queue is non-empty the worker should immediately pick up another task When tasks are complete, a worker places the result on the Response Channel I know there are QueueChannels in Spring Integration, but these channels require polling (which seems suboptimal). In particular, if a worker can be busy, I'd like the worker to be busy. Also, I've considered avoiding the queue altogether and simply letting tasks round-robin to all workers, but it's preferable to have a single waiting line as some tasks may be accomplished faster than others. Furthermore, I'd like insight into how many jobs are remaining (which I can get from the queue) and the ability to cancel all or particular jobs. How can I implement this message queuing/work distribution pattern while avoiding a polling? Edit: It appears I'm looking for the Message Dispatcher pattern -- how can I implement this using Spring/Spring Integration?

• Importing external .jar file to Android project

  I've read various answers to similar questions on StackOverflow, so I apologise if I'm repeating another question, but I can't seem to get this to work. I have a standard java project in which I've written code to parse some BBC Radio XML data from the internet. The project is called BBCSchedules and the class I'm interested in is called BBCChannel. I'm now trying to use the BBCChannel class in an android application. How should I go about doing this? I've tried various things, following various bits of advice on the internet, and the place I've got to at the moment is compiling my BBCSchedules project to a .jar file, and importing that to the Android project using the Build Path/Library/Add External Jar option. However, Eclispe still doesn't recognise the BBCChannel class, and won't let me run the application because of this. I guess I've done something silly wrong, but what is it? Cheers, Robin UPDATE: I've tried the steps listed in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1334802/how-can-i-use-external-jars-in-an-android-project and various other StackOverflow questions I can find that seem to be related to this, but absolutely nothing seems to work. Any other ideas? UPDATE: The discussions I've had with the author of the first answer below suggest that it is something to do with how I am using Eclipse to attach the .jar file. The project he sent me with the .jar file already attached didn't work. Any other ideas anyone?

• Varnish configuration to only cache for non-logged in users

  I have a Ruby on Rails application fronted by varnish+nginx. As most of the sites content is static unless you are a logged in user, I want to cache the site heavily with varnish when a user is logged out but only to cache static assets when they are logged in. When a user is logged in they will have the cookie 'user_credentials' present in their Cookie: header, in addition I need to skip caching on /login and /sessions in order that a user can get their 'user_credentials' cookie in the first place. Rails by default does not set a cache friendly Cache-control header, but my application sets a "public,s-max-age=60" header when a user is not logged in. Nginx is set to return 'far future' expires headers for all static assets. The configuration I have at the moment is totally bypassing the cache for everything when logged in, including static assets — and is returning cache MISS for everything when logged out. • High CPU usage - symptoms moving from server to server after bouncing

  First off, I apologize if I didn't include enough information to properly troubleshoot this issue. This sort of thing isn't my specialty, so it is a learning process. If there's something I need to provide, please let me know and I'll be happy to do what I can. The images associated with my question are at the bottom of this post. We are dealing with a clustered environment of four WebLogic 9.2 Java application servers. The cluster utilizes a round-robin load algorithm. Other details include: Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_12-b04) BEA JRockit(R) (build R27.4.0-90_CR352234-91983-1.5.0_12-20071115-1605-linux-x86_64, compiled mode) Basically, I started looking at the servers' performance because our customers are seeing lots of lag at various times of the day. Our servers should easily handle the loads they are given, so it's not clear what's going on. Using HP Performance Manager, I generated some graphs that indicate that the CPU usage is completely out of whack. It seems that, at any given point, one or more of the servers has a CPU utilization of over 50%. I know this isn't particularly high, but I would say it is a red flag based on the CPU utilization of the other servers in the WebLogic cluster. Interesting things to note: The high CPU utilization was occurring only on server02 for several weeks. The server crashed (extremely rare; we are not sure if it's related to this) and upon starting it back up, the CPU utilization was normal on all 4 servers. We restarted all 4 managed servers and the application server (on server01) yesterday, on 2/28. As you can see, server03 and server04 picked up the behavior that was seen on server02 before. The CPU utilization is a Java process owned by the application user (appown). The number of transactions is consistent across all servers. It doesn't seem like any one server is actually handling more than another. If anyone has any ideas or can at least point me in the right direction, that would be great. • Entity Framework 4 mapping fragment error when adding new entity scalar

  I have an Entity Framework 4 model-first design. I create a first draft of my model in the designer and all was well. I compiled, generated database, etc. Later on I tried to add a string scalar (Nullable = true) to one of my existing entities and I keep getting this type of error when I compile: Error 3004: Problem in mapping fragments starting at line 569: No mapping specified for properties MyEntity.MyValue in Set MyEntities. An Entity with Key (PK) will not round-trip when: Entity is type [MyEntities.MyEntity] I keep having to manually open the EDMX file and correct the XML whenever I add scalars. Ideas on what's going on?

• What should i expect on an online C++ test

I just got a call back from an employer and he advised me i have made it through to the next round of interviews and would have to take an online C++ test through IKM (http://www.ikmnet.com/). Has anyone here got any advise as to what type of questions this test will ask, or has anyone got advise about what i should do a brush up on to do the best i could on this test. • Pass Dictionary of routeValues to ActionLink

  All, Getting to grips with ASP.NET MVC. So far, so good, but this one is a little nuts. I have a view model that contains a dictionary of attributes for a hyperlink, used like this: menu = model variable Html.ActionLink(Html.Encode(menu.Name), Html.Encode(menu.Action), Html.Encode(menu.Controller), menu.Attributes, null) The problem is the position of "menu.Attributes" expects an object in the form: new { Name = "Fred", Age=24 } From what I can tell, this anonymous object is actually converted to a dictionary via reflection anyway BUT you can't pass a dictionary to it in the first place!!! The Html generated for the link simply shows the dictionary type. How on earth do I get round this? The whole point is that its general and the controller can have set the menu.Attributes previously....

  Hello, I have two models: class Model1(): name = CharField() url = CharField() class Model2(): model1 = ForeignKey(Model1) user = ForeignKey(User) zzz = CharField() There are 5 rows for model1 in the database, these are fixed and will rarely change. I need to display a formset for model2 that allows users to enter the zzz value, the formset must always show one form per row in the model1 table, the label for each form in the formset must be the name of the related model1. If the user deletes a model2 in the formset the next time the page loads it will render an empty zzz value for that form and the user must be able to edit the previous zzz value - meaning it must be pre populated with all model2 rows associated with the user. The idea is to print each row in the model1 table as a form instead of the user selecting the related model1 name in a select box. I know its not that complicated, but I'm seriously stumped and keep going round in circles!! Many thanks in advance. • Seamless jQuery Marquee?

  Is it possible to create a 100% seamless marquee in jQuery (or just javascript but jQuery prefered)? I've made a simple marquee that moves left until it is off the screen then simply jumps (when out of view) to the right and starts again. However I would love it to not have the wait. The only way I could think of doing this would be to duplicate the text and put it after the first text, then swap them round again. However I have no idea how to implement this in jQuery. Any ideas?

  I need a div with picture bg to overlay an image (with some amount transparency) when hovered on. I need to be able to have one transparent overlay that can be used and reused throughout the site on any image. My first attempt was round-about to say the least. Because I found out you cannot roll-over an invisible div I devised a sandwhich system in which the original image is the first layer, the overlay is the second layer, and the original image is third layer again. This way, when you roll-over, the original image disappears revealing the overlay image over the original image: http://www.nightlylabs.com/uploads/test.html So it works. Kinda. Because of you cannot interact with an visibility:invisible element (why?!) the roll-over flickers unless you rest the cursor on it. Any help? This method is bad so if anyone has a better one please comment.

  Hi all, I keep receiving an error with the following code. I am trying to make a function that will format a field (content=0.0032) into a varchar/percent (content=0.32%). At the moment i'm just trying to get format to work, and it throws up an error "Error Code : 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'len);" The function definition for "Format" is "Format(X,d)" where x is the number and d is the number of decimal places to round too. • ICU MessageFormat Currency Value Precison Lost

  This may be a niche question but I'm working with ICU to format currency strings. I've bumped into a situation that I don't quite understand. When using the MesssageFormat class, why for a certain locale (Korea "ko"KR" for example) does it round currency values (e.g. 100.50 becomes ?101). For most locales (such as the US "en_US"), the precision of the argument passed in remains untouched (e.g. 100.50 becomes $100.50). I thought this might be a default rounding issue that some locales have (Swiss Francs "fr_CH" for example have a default 0.05 rounding) but South Korea "ko_KR" has none. Any ideas?

• Linear Regression and Java Dates

  I am trying to find the linear trend line for a set of data. The set contains pairs of dates (x values) and scores (y values). I am using a version of this code as the basis of my algorithm. The results I am getting are off by a few orders of magnitude. I assume that there is some problem with round off error or overflow because I am using Date's getTime method which gives you a huge number of milliseconds. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to minimize the errors and compute the correct results?

In an effort to do something with the jQuery Calculation plugin, I am playing with the basic example of the order form on the plugin site. I want to have the grand total as a form field,rather than text, so I can use the value.   Hi I've embedded several views in a library so that I can re-use across projects using this method which works OK: http://www.wynia.org/wordpress/2008/12/aspnet-mvc-plugins/ But one view usings a Javascript file. I've tried marking this as an embedded resource and adding it AssemblyInfo.cs and then referencing this resource using <%= ClientScript.GetWebResourceUrl(this.GetType(), "FullPath.FileName.js")%> This is literally displaying this output in the view WebResource.axd?d=nUxqfqAUQLabLU54W I think this is because Im trying to refer to an embedded resource from an embedded resource. Help appreciated as Im going round in circles.. Steve

• Java 1.4 to Java 6 migration

  Hi, I have some enterprise apps running on Java 1.4. They mostly invoke Stored Proces on DB, Parse XML files (Not too large files, at the most few megs), read/write from/to disk. We have a requirement where now we have to migrate these apps to Java 6(No code changes to be done at all). My questions: If I dont recompile my apps under Java 6 and just run them with it, will it work fine (I know they 'should'). But if somebody thinks other way round, could you kindly share your thoughts please? More important question is - Will it have any perfomance impact?. As in, App compiled on 1.4 and running on 1.6 vs App compiled and running on 1.6. Is 1.6 gonna do any bytecode optimization for the same old peace of code compared to 1.4? Many Thanks js

  Hello, I am a seasoned C and Java programmer, but an absolute WPF newbie. I am creating a kiosk application that will display a list of images of products that the user will click to see product details and maybe place an order. I am trying to structure my app with MVVM Foundation because I am used to the benefits of structure and tests. I wonder what is the most natural way to create a grid of clickable images that will fill the screen left to right, top to bottom (or the other way round, I have no exact requirements). Any image should be bound to an object that will become current and be displayed in the next screen. Thanks for your help.

• Best online course for C#/SQL for a professional engineer

  I know similar questions have been asked, but I've not been able to find information specific to my situation. I'm looking for "continuing education"-type options, specifically a C# and/or SQL course. I'm a software engineering professional with a graduate level computer science degree. So I'm looking for something substantial that will be challenging. I certainly already have me feet wet in both C# and SQL I'm just looking for a more formal training to round out the edges. There is a good chance my company will pay for it if it is reasonably priced so it doesn't have to be free and preferably shouldn't be (a certificate or certification to come out of it would be nice). When I tried Google, all I found were things that sounded like crash courses (like a 3 day course or course for "dummies"), or course that did not seem very credible. Can anyone recommend a course of action for this? Thanks!

  I have the following Solution: SomeProject.Ria (non Silverlight code) SomeProject.Ria.Silverlight (Silverlight light code, namespace is still SomeProject.Ria) SomeProject.Ria.MyServices (RIA Services Domain Service) SomeProject.Ria.MyServices.Proxies (RIA Services Silverlight Generated Code) SomeProject.Shell (Silverlight Applicaiton) SomeProject.Web (Web Application) I would like to use Resource Files for my Annotations on the meta data class in SomeProject.Ria.MyServices. The format for that appears to be: [Required(AllowEmptyStrings=false,ErrorMessageResourceName="ThisFieldIsRequired", ErrorMessageResourceType(MyResource))] Which project does MyResource belong in? (Assuming that someday I need to support other culture files). Also the use of the string in here really seems to breed room for error, is it possible to do something like this and still achieve localization, or does this just get compiled into the meta data? If not, how can I get round the resource name being a string? [Required(AllowEmptyStrings=false,ErrorMessage=MyResources.RequiredMessage)]
