• DNS resolution problems; dig SERVFAIL error

  I'm setting up a couple of dedicated servers, and having problems setting up my nameservers properly. One of these is a LEMP server (LAMP with nginx in place of Apache), and the other will function solely as an email server, running exim/dovecot/ASSP antispam (no Apache). The LEMP server is CentOS 5.5, with no control panel, while the email server is CentOS 5.5 as well, with cPanel/WHM. So, I've had problems getting DNS set up properly. I have two domains, each one pointing to one of these servers. The nameservers are registered correctly with the domain registrar, and the nameserver IPs are entered correctly as well. I've spoken to tech support at the registrar and they confirm that everything is set up on their end. Not knowing much about DNS, I googled nameservers and DNS until I nearly went blind, and spent hours messing with the configuration. Eventually, I got the LEMP server's DNS working properly (no cPanel). Pleased with this triumph, I'm trying to mimic that configuration and repeat the process with the email server, and it's just not happening. The nameserver starts and stops, but the domain doesn't resolve. Things I have tried Going through standard procedures to set up DNS in WHM Clearing all DNS information, uninstalling BIND, then reinstalling all of that and again going through WHM procedures for setting up DNS Clearing all DNS information, and setting up BIND via shell (completely outside of cPanel) by using my config and zone files from the LEMP server as a template named runs just fine, but nothing is resolving. When I "dig any example.com" I get a SERVFAIL message. Nslookups return no information. Tech support is very responsive, and largely useless. Hours go by with them asking me questions to narrow down what could be wrong, then they pass the ticket to the tech on the next shift, who ignores everything that's happened already and spend his whole shift asking all the same questions the last guy asked. So, in summary: *Nameservers, with IPs, are correctly registered with domain registrar *named is configured and running *...and must not be configured correctly, because nothing resolves. Any help would be great. I changed domains and IPs in the files to generics, but let me know if you need to know the domain in question. Thanks! UPDATE I found that I didn't have 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf, so I added it, along with my two public IPs that I have named listening on. resolv.conf search www.example.com example.com nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver 7.8.9.10 ;Was in here by default, authoritative nameserver of hosting company nameserver 1.2.3.4 ;Public IP #1 nameserver 1.2.3.5 ;Public IP #2 Now when I DIG example.com from the host, it resolves. If I try to DIG from my other server (in the same datacenter), or from the internet, it times out or I get SERVFAIL.

  I want to create a MS Build script (executed by way of TFS Build Server) that will accept a list of project names that need to be built, unit tested and deployed. The reason is that I want one script to serve many 'like' structured solutions. All the solutions are SOA in nature and share the same framework, project structure and deployment requirements. I've done this in Nant and acheived great success out of having one build file serving 4 solutions - it just accepted a list of web project names to compile and deploy to our test/uat environments. In the Default SMTP Virtual Server properties, the Delivery tab, click Advanced and fill the "Smart host" field with the address that your provider gives you. So my question is simple, are WCF Data Services designed to be used via clients? Or has anyone ever heard of someone using them on the server side? Simple scenario a general layered architecture using BO business objects (parenthesis indicate what is being passed between layers) (XML) WCF Service - (BO)Business Logic - (BO) Dao - Entity Framework or using data services it would be where DS BO are modeled business entities to be used in data service. • Which Workflow Engine do you recommend?

  I am kicking around the idea of using a workflow engine on this upcoming project. We know that there is a lot of caveats with using a workflow engine and we have a lot of development experience in many platforms so we would be willing to let the choice of workflow engine take precedence over our favorite toolset or developer IDE. We are more interested in internal workflow (i.e. petri net for easily changeable ERP purposes without involving additional coder time) than external workflow (i.e. aggregating SOAP calls into a transaction aware, higher level SOA). Which workflow engine would you recommend? We have superficially looked at offerings by Oracle, Microsoft, and some open source stuff too. It's all very overwhelming so please respond only if you have real life experience with implementing internal workflow.

  I have a classic Java SOA application, with a web UI module, web services module, a service module (Java API), a domain module and a persistence module. In a sense, each of these modules has their own public API. My understanding of Spring Security is that I can use web filters to handle the security of the web gui and web services, and method level security (via annotations) for the service module. My question is this: should I bother to add method level security to the domain module and the persistence module or is that considered overkill?

• C# How to create objects without class definitions?

  Is it possible to create objects at designtime without having to have hard coded class definitions, then populate properties with primitives or even strongly typed data types? This might sound confusing, so I will attempt to give you a use case scenario. Use case: You have an XML config file that could hold configuration values for connecting to various systems in an SOA application. In C# the XML file is read, but for each system the configuration properties are different (e.g: SQL might have a connection string, while SharePoint might need a username + password + domain + url, while yet an smtp server would need username + password + port + url) So instead of creating static classes as follows public class SharePointConfiguration or public class SQLConfiguration, then have each class with custom properties (this is cumbersome) or using a 1990's method, an arrayList or some named collection Is there not a more preferred way to achieve this? Taking advantage of new language features, that can still offer design time intellisense, which would make the code easier to maintain and less prone to error. Thanks

• What are the differences between enterprise software/architecture patterns and open source software?

  I am mainly a business app developer and I hear terms like CQRS, ServiceBus, SOA, DDD, BDD, AOP a lot. My question is that do these patterns/practices exist only in the "enterprise" world? In contract to the enterprise world is the open source community. Highly trafficked sites like Digg, LiveJournal whenever there is an article mentioning about how they built/scaled their sites all I am hearing is what open source software (Memcached, NoSQL) they used in order to scale/simplify the way they tackle software problems and they rarely mention those above terms. Is it because they are not as sophisticated as those of enterprise level software (I doubt it)? Or are people just making up those terms/practices/patterns in order to keep them jobs? Or am I confusing myself with differences between software development and internet website scaling?

• What technologies are appropriate for a human workflow system?

  I'm researching various workflow architectures and it is overwhelming. The workflow system I am creating will be almost completely human-driven. Very little, if any, asynchronous activity will be taking place. One possibility is to simply use a RDBMS and have a task table, from which stored procedures would be used to enforce synchronous access to each task. This seems very simple, but I'm having a hard time coming up with reasons why I might need to involve a heavier solution. If my system has ~500 concurrent users, and there is very little in the way of automated or asynchronous tasks, should I even consider the various workflow patterns/packages out there like Mule, BPEL/SOA, Spring Work Flow, etc?

• How to host a naked domain on a CDN?

  If I have a domain that I wish to serve "naked" eg http://examp.le/, and efficiently with a CDN, what are my options? The issue is that the CDNs I looked at all want you to use a CNAME so that they can do geo ip lookup. CNAMES are not meant to be served at the same level as other records, and this apparently breaks some dns resolvers. You at least need SOA and MX records at the same level for a naked domain. The only solutions are: having A records in your own dns, thus skipping the geo ip, or finding a cdn who will allow delegation of the whole domain so they can do geo ip things for the A record directly. I've tried googling and can't find any Cdn who offers this. Any ideas? I looked closely at Amazon cloudfront and rackspace cloudfiles. I couldn't work it out for those.

I want some abstraction from CAML and WebDav and SharePoint Web Services that could help me speed up my development time. Ideally I want to select, insert, update and delete from lists, manage attachments in list items, download items from sharepoint, retrieve user meta data from owner info. This sort of thing. Does any such abstraction exist for Sharepoint that use SharePoints web service model, obviously the use of the MOSS Component API is out of the question because it will only run on the hosted MOSS server, and I am writing an SOA app. Thank you

• AS11 Oracle B2B Sync Support - Series 1

  Synchronous message support has been enabled in Oracle B2B 11G. This would help customers to send the business message and receive the corresponding business response synchronously. We would like to keep this blog entry as three part series, first one would carry Oracle B2B configuration related details followed by 'how it can be consumed and utilized in an enterprise' using composites backed model. And, the last one would talk about more sophisticated seeded support built on Oracle B2B platform (Note: the last one is still in description phase and ETA hasn't been finalized yet). Details: In an effort to enable synchronous processing in Oracle B2B, we provided a platform using the existing 'callout' mechanism. In this case, we expect the 'callout' attached to the agreement to deliver incoming business message (inbound) to back-end application and get the corresponding business response from back-end and deliver it to Oracle B2B as its output. The output of 'callout' would be processed as outbound message and the same will be attached as a response for the inbound message. Requirements to enable Sync Support: Outbound side: Outbound Agreement - to send business message request Inbound Agreement - to receive business message response Inbound side: Inbound Agreement - to receive business message request Outbound Agreement - to send business message response Agreement Level Callout - to deliver the inbound request to back-end and get the corresponding business response This feature is supported only for HTTP based transport to exchange messages with Trading Partners. One may initiate the outbound message (enqueue) using any of the available Transports in Oracle B2B. Configuration: Outbound side: Please add "syncresponse=true" as "Additional Transport Header" parameter for remote Trading Partner's HTTP delivery channel configuration. This would enable Oracle B2B to process the HTTP response as inbound message and deliver the same to back-end application. All other configuration related to Agreement and Document setup remain same. Inbound side: There is no change in Agreement and Document setup. To enable "Sync Support", you need to build a 'callout' that takes the responsibility of delivering inbound message to back-end and get the corresponding business response from the back-end and attach the same as its output. Oracle B2B treats the output of 'callout' as outbound message and deliver it to Trading Partner as synchronous HTTP response. The requests that needs to processed synchronously should be received by "syncreceiver" (http://:/b2b/syncreceiver) endpoint in Oracle B2B. Exception Handling: Existing Oracle B2B exception handling applies to this use case as well. Latest improvements in the configuration API enables developers to quickly get started and build a working simple system that uses messaging infrastructure. The goal of this session is to give a jump start with the framework, introduce basic concepts such as message handlers, Sagas, Pub/Sub, Generic Host and also create a working demo application that uses publish/subscribe messaging. The content of the session is addressed to developers that are interested in learning how to get started using nServiceBus in order to design and build distributed systems. Bio: Bernard Kowalski is currently a Software Developer at Microdesk, one of Autodesk's leading partners in providing variety of Geospatial and Computer-Aided Design solutions. Bernard has experience developing .NET framework-based applications utilizing Windows Forms, Windows Services, ASP.NET MVC, and Web services. In a recent project, Bernard architected and implemented a distributed system based on SOA principles using an open source implementation of an Enterprise Service Bus. Bernard develops software with Agile patterns and practices using Domain Driven Design combined with TDD (Test Driven Development).   A figura abaixo oferece uma visão geral das possibilidades de monitoramento providas pelo Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), que é uma ferramenta que permite gerenciar a infraestrutura de TI da empresa. Um componente importante da solução é chanado OEM Grid Control. Esse componente permite gerenciar, visualizar e monitorar diversos elementos a partir de uma mesma console. E que elementos podem ser monitorados? No conceito utilizado pelo OEM, os elementos que podem ser monitorados são chamados de Targets, e esses targets envolvem a monitoração de hosts (Windows, Linux, Solaris), Banco de Dados, Middleware, Aplicações Web, Serviços que podem ser customizados pelo administrador, Sistemas e Grupos de targets, além dos aplicativos Oracle. Cada elemento monitorado é ativado através de packs de gerenciamento. Ou seja, há uma série de packs que podem ser adquiridas conforme a necessidade, para permitir a monitoração a partir do próprio OEM Grid Control. Existem packs de monitoramento especiais para banco de dados Oracle, packs de monitoramento para Tomcat, Jboss, WebLogic, SOA Suite, Identity Management. Os plugins permitem o gerenciamento de elementos adicionais, tais como dispositivos de rede, servidores, banco de dados de terceiros (DB2, SQL Server), Vmware, etc. Já os conectores permitem a integração com outros softwares, tais como gerenciadores de requisições de helpdesk, de modo a integrar os alertas gerados pela ferramenta e gerar tickets em ferramentas como CA Service Desk, BMC Remedy e outros. A extensão de funcionalidades é realmente bem vasta. Num próximo post irei comentar sobre o Ops Center, um novo componente que surgiu após a aquisição da Sun. Além do Grid Control e do Ops Center, há outros componentes bem interessantes. A figura abaixo ilustra diversas camadas onde o ferramental Oracle pode ser usado para monitoração. Há uma pack que permite gerenciar os níveis de serviços em todas as camadas ilustradas. Dada uma requisição, pode-se decompor os dados de SLA em cada camada. E há também o Real User Monitoring, que trata de medir a experiência com o usuário. Falarei disso num novo post, mas basicamente a ferramenta permite acompanhar todo o tráfego de rede gerado dos usuários finais até os servidores web, e com isso rastrear como cada usuário usa a aplicação, quanto tempo ele navega pelo site, se ele enfrentou algum tipo de problema, se houve algum pedido não finalizado devido a algum problema na infraestrutura. É uma ferramenta bem interessante, falarei um pouco mais dela depois. E claro, há também componentes para a realização de testes funcionais e de carga. Em breve, aqui no blog :)
