  • downgrading a ubuntu 10.04 LTS virtual server

    I am downgrading an existing ubuntu 10.04 LTS Virtual Server to one with less memory and a smaller drive ( from 80GB to 40GB ). My hoster ( hetzner.de ) does not give me the possibility of doing an inplace downgrade, so I have to create a new server. What is the best way to make an image of the first system and "apply it" to the new one ? I know there other answer but in my situation I am not sure I would be able to use Clonezilla or other GUI tools, because the installation is minimal with no GUI. Thanks in advance Michele

  • What language available on commodity web hosts would suit a C# developer? [closed]

    Recognising its ubiquity on commodity web hosting services, I tried developing in PHP a few years ago. I really didn't like it, later deciding that life was too short for PHP. (In brief, having to put $ on variable names; mis-spelt variable names become new variables; converting non-numeric strings to integers without complaint; the need for an "and this time I mean it" comparison operator.) In my ideal world, commodity web hosts would all support C#/ASP.NET, my preferred web-development language and framework, but this is not my ideal world. Even Mono has barely made a dent on Linux based hosts. However, last time I moaned about PHP's ubiquity, someone followed up that this was no longer the case, and that many other languages are now commonly usable on web hosts too. What programming language; a. Would suit a developer who prefers C#. b. Is available to run on many web hosts.

  • Apache/Tomcat configuration to allow multiple incoming DNS served by one app (SAAS)

    Is there a way to setup apache and tomcat so that I can have d1.webapp.com d2.webapp.com d3.webapp.com etc. All hosted by the same tomcat instance without having to add aliases to the HOSTS element in the tomcat config file? I will be allowing new users to have thier own domain when they sign up and it will be a subdomain of the web app. I don't want to keep updating the hosts file for aliases and restarting tomcat though each time a new user signs up.

    All, I have a hosts file that looks like this: 10.10.10.1 myserver1 myserver1alias 10.10.10.2 myserver2 myserver2alias I'm looking for a way using perl to pass in an argument of myserver1 and have it return myserver1alias, likewise if I pass in myserver2 it should return myserver2alias. Any suggestions?

    Hi, I just came across an issue, where I had to check if a path points into a windows share. Part of this problem is to check if host A is the same as host B. Where host A and host B can be one of the following {IPv4-Address, IPv6-Address, Hostname, FQDN}. As I do not need to be exact it's enough to resolve and compare the IP-Addresses in my case. But is there, theoretically, a method to check if the hosts are the same?

  • What's required for a nameserver to be registered?

    I'm trying to change nameservers for some of my domains at GoDaddy, but I occasionally run into "Nameserver not registered" problems, and then I'm not allowed to set the nameservers. Here are the cases I've tried, and I still don't understand what it takes to have a registered nameserver. With ns1 and ns2 pointing to my nameservers, I can set the nameservers successfully when I set up domains as follows: Host Summary entries for ns1 and ns2 at GoDaddy .co.cc domains with A records for ONLY ns1 and ns2 Hosted with other nameservers. Have only A records for ns1 and ns2 But these do NOT work (nameserver not registered error): .info domains at GoDaddy with A records for ONLY ns1 and ns2 Hosts with dyndns.org that point to IP of nameservers Also, when I dig any domains hosted at my nameservers using any of the above, I get the correct response. So what's the deal here? Why do the last two cases get "nameserver not registered errors"? Thanks!

    I'm just curious how many ways people can come up with to block access to a website. I simply intended to block (my own) access to news.ycombinator.com to stop my productivity drain. The first two methods I thought of were editing the hosts file to resolve news.ycombinator.com to 0.0.0.0 or adding a rule to iptables. iptables -A OUTPUT -d news.ycombinator.com -j REJECT Disclaimer: I do realise that the above two methods are easily by-passable. Doesn't help this is my own machine. What other ways does the internet know?

  • Why use FQDN as DNS-server option in DHCP?

    I've seen multiple default configurations of DHCP-servers with a FQDN set as the DNS-server option. Doesn't this imply a catch-22, or the need for that DNS-server to be in the hosts file of every single client? example from dhcp3-server in debian 6: option domain-name-servers ns1.internal.example.org; I can see how using a dns name is convenient because it's only an A-record to change, and they can be load balanced if wanted, but I don't see how the client is going to resolve the name. Why are people using FQDN's as DNS-server addresses in DHCP?

I have a server inside my intranet, in wich i have apache running with some web applications. when i'm at office the url i use to connect is zeus.mydomain.it, it works couse i have in my /etc/hosts a record 192.168.0.11 zeus.mydomain.it, but obviously it does not work when i'm outside in different network. i have a internet connectino with static ip, so i can connect to my intranet form outside. the question is: how can i connect to the intranet server using zeus.mydomain.it from inside and from outside my intranet ? thanks!!   • How anti-virus on the host machne affects performance of virtual machines?

    I'm diagnosing some issue with Oracle virtual box where virtual machine sometimes perform terribly slow (much slower then notebook with worse configuration): Notebook i7 (2 cores with HT = 4 logical CPUs), 4GB RAM, 5400 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit Virtual machine (Oracle Virtual Box) Host: i7 (4 cores with HT = 8 logical CPUs, 12 GB RAM, system runs from SSD, virtual machine from 7200 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit) Virtual machine: 4 cores assigned, 8 GB RAM assigned, Win 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) Virtual machine uses bridge to separate network interface (machine has two) VPN for network communication No other virtual machine runs on the host Host has installed ESET Smart Security All SW is updated with last version. My question is if anti-virus on the host machine can somehow affect performance of the virtual machine and if so how can I turn it off without turning the anti-virus itself?

  • Allowing access to MPD from local network

    I have successfully installed MPD (Music Player Daemon) on my desktop computer. Everything works fine when the client runs on the same machine as the server. Now I would like to access MPD from my laptop computer which is connected (wirelessly) to the local network. In order to allow access to MPD from any computer on the local network I have added this line to /etc/hosts.allow: mpd: .local and restarted MPD. Still I get the message "error: Connection refused" when I try to access MPD with MPC (Music Player Client) from my laptop. Any clues or troubleshooting hints?

  • Map localhost to IP address on Windows XP & Internet Explorer 7+?

    I'm trying to map 'localhost' to an IP address elsewhere on the network, say '10.0.1.1' for example. I've tried editing my hosts file, changing the entry from: 127.0.0.1 localhost to 10.0.1.1 localhost with no luck. The closest I've gotten is using DNS spoofing via Charles. Adding a DNS spoof entry mapping the host name 'localhost' to '10.0.1.1' works fine in Firefox, but fails in Internet Explorer, basically showing IE's 404 page. I'm wondering if there's some specific setting or way I can get DNS spoofing to work in IE? The main issue I'm trying to resolve is that our development environment points to 'localhost' and rather than setting the dev env up in a legacy Windows laptop to try and debug, point to a server that has it all setup and I can make the changes remotely.

    so i can ping the ip adress for the server i need but when i ping it by name, the server name is followed by an incorrect ip address. My host file is updated, i can communicate with my machine from my server just fine. i can access websites on the server by typing the ip adress into the adress bar followed by the name. it is like my machine is ignoring my hosts file... i have updated re updated...flushed dns, u name it ive done it any ideas?

  • Path Not Found error when opening VB6 project from a shared folder on Virtual PC 2007 (XP sp3)

    I currently work on a small software team that primarily maintains legacy software. I am trying to set up a VirtualPC that we can use to do this maintenance. Specifically, I would like to be able to debug and run VB6 web apps from a folder on the host pc. My constraints are as follows: The VirtualPC will not be registered on the domain. The server that hosts our Subversion repository does not run the subversion service so the only way to interact with the repository is through "file:\\", which requires domain authentication. It is not possible to debug/run VB6 web apps that are located on mapped network drives, because IIS requires that the VirtualPC be on the same domain as the network drive I would like to avoid having to copy the folder from the host pc to the VirtualPC and then copying it back in order to have the latest revision from Subversion So, I am trying to use VirtualPC's shared folder feature to share the host machine's Subversion directory and open the project in VB6 on the VirtualPC. Problem is that Visual Basic throws the error: "Path not found: '\\C:\\Subversion\Path\Project.vbp'" when I try to open it. Folder C:\Subversion on the host machine is mapped to G: on the VirtualPC. If anyone can help me resolve this error or find some other way to accomplish this, I would be deeply grateful. Oh, both host and virtual OS is Windows XP sp3. Using VB 6.0, IIS v5.1. This prompts to a simple question: “How many is ‘too many’ VLFs?” I suggest that you go and read an article written by Kimberly over here. I am sure that you are going to have a clear understanding of what a good number for your VLFs is from that article. If you have lots of VLFs, you can reduce them right away using the following method: (I am just attempting to write a working script over here.) USE AdventureWorks GO BACKUP LOG AdventureWorks TO DISK='d:\adtlog.bak' GO -- Get Logical file name of the log file sp_helpfile GO DBCC SHRINKFILE(AdventureWorks_Log,TRUNCATEONLY) GO ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks MODIFY FILE (NAME = AdventureWorks_Log,SIZE = 1GB) GO DBCC LOGINFO GO Again, here I have assumed that your initial log size is 1 GB, but in reality you should select the number based on your own ideal size of the log file.   • Add physical disk to KVM virtual machine

    I'm setting up a file server (nas4free) as a KVM virtual machine on a Ubuntu Server 12.04 system. How do I add physical hard drives directly to the VM so they can be used by the guest (nas4free), but not the host? Specifically the hard drive I'd like to mount is /dev/sda (which is not currently mounted on the server.) So far I've found two solutions but I haven't gotten either to work. The first is from Server Fault where it's suggested to use virt-manager. I haven't gotent this to work because when I try to select an existing drive nothing is being listed. My best guess as to why this is, is because I'm using virt-manager over ssh and not connecting as root, should that make a difference? The second solution I've found here is to just run the command (modified for my system) qm set nas4free -virtio /dev/sda but that seems to require proxmox which I don't have installed and doesn't seem to be in the default repositories? Finally, once the above is sorted out and I can mount the drive directly to the VM, does anyone have an experience with whether the drive should be mounted to the VM as scsi, ide, or virtio? (I know virtio was recommend in the linked ServerFault page, but I hadn't heard of it before now since I mainly use VMWare). Thanks for your help!!!
